Spring Activities Are Plentiful… Engage and Get Involved

S

pring is busting out all over – and so are opportunities to be involved in the Greensboro Builders Association! The GBA is off and running - keeping with its major theme - Member Engagement. Our membership has been very productive through the first quarter of 2015 – and opportunities for involvement aren’t slowing down – so if you haven’t done so yet - get involved now. Our Association has already organized or assisted with several successful events through the first quarter of 2015. Thank you to Kevin Otey and Ron Foister who chaired a first class Skeet Tournament, hosted at Shane’s Sporting Clay in early March. The tournament had record number of participants, including several new participants who took a shot at getting involved with GBA – thank you for your participation and engagement. We had a successful kickoff in early March of a newly formed group of “Young Professionals” with an After Hours gathering at Kirkwood Kitchen & Bar - which had more than 45 attendees. Our Young Professionals group is being spearheaded by Mark Disney, Will Yearns, Ford Matthews, Leslie Gunter, Jamie Bowlin and Nadine Khazzaka. They have numerous activities in the works including social gatherings, educational programs and family events. This new initiative is an effort to increase the engagement and commitment of our younger members. We also had another hugely successful Southern Ideal Home Show the weekend of March 27-29 which was kicked off with our GBA Member Preview Night and Houzz seminar. It was great to have so many GBA members as exhibitors and attendees. Thank you to all who participated, including those who assisted with the GBA booth and other coordinating activities.

So what’s next… The Spring Parade of Homes will be held on the weekends of April 25-26 & May 2-3. With home buyers becoming more active, so has our Association members as we have 50 homes in the Spring Parade - representing 30 builder companies. Bring your friends and take advantage of this great opportunity to see the quality workmanship of our Builder and Associate members who participated in the construction of these homes.

Get Involved…BE ENGAGED! There are numerous opportunities to be involved. Try it out - bring a friend – you can find a sampling of activities occurring over the next several months throughout this publication. We also encourage you to utilize the GBA website and Member News emails to stay abreast of upcoming events and initiatives. Hope to see you soon!

New Homes Month & Spring Parade of Homes

Saturday & Sunday April 25-26 & May 2-3 1:00 – 5:00 pm

A

pril is New Homes month. As we celebrate the beginning of spring…it’s also time to celebrate our Spring Parade of Homes to be held on two consecutive weekends – Saturday & Sunday, April 25-26 & May 2-3 from 1-5 pm each day. Fifty homes will be on tour throughout Greensboro and Guilford Country, representing 30 builders. So why build or buy new? Below are some talking points provided by the National Association of Home Builders to share with consumers considering a new home: • Analysis by NAHB, using data from the Census Bureau’s latest Residential Energy Consumption Survey, shows that on a persquare foot basis, the newer the home, the less energy it uses. • Compared to homes built before 1950, the average consumption of energy other than electricity is 46% lower in homes built after 2000. • Today’s new homes are built with environmentally-friendly features such as energy-efficient tankless water heaters, Energy Star appliances, HVAC systems, insulation and windows and doors that make the home more comfortable and can save the home owners money over the long term. • The Census Bureau’s American Housing Survey shows that maintenance costs on average were 56 percent lower in new homes; $547 a year for all single family homes versus $241 for homes built after 2008.

• The benefits of new homes are not just financial. • New homes feature floor plans that suit modern lifestyles, with open space layouts, high ceilings, large windows and design features such as information centers in kitchens, laundry rooms located near bedrooms, walk-in closets and pantries and mudrooms for convenience and comfort. • New home buyers enjoy the ability to choose the finishes, fixtures, flooring, paint colors and more that suit their preferences, without the hassle or cost of changing the previous owner’s tastes. • New homes are safer, with electrical wiring systems that can accommodate modern appliances and components such as highdefinition televisions, security systems, fire alarms and complex lighting and audio setups. • New homes not only benefit the home owner, they benefit the community. The estimated local impacts of building 100 singlefamily homes in a typical metro area include: o $28.7 million in local income, o $3.6 million in taxes and other revenue for local governments, and o 394 local jobs. As the housing industry continues to shows signs of a sustained recovery, today’s low interest rates combined with the benefits of new construction make now an ideal time to achieve the American dream of homeownership in a brand-new home.

The construction industry continues to rebound and many business owners are hiring new workers at a rapid rate. Finding skilled labor can be challenging in today’s market. In the rush to capitalize on this recovery, hiring decisions and training may not receive the attention they deserve. In 2014, 65% of Builders Mutual workers’ compensation claims were workers in their first year of employment. Did you know that the claims costs are highest for workers in the first year of employment? It is imperative that new workers, regardless of their prior experience, receive proper safety training before they begin working. Get the tools and training you need to hire the best and keep them safe. WorkSafe 101 prepares business owners as they grow their businesses and hire new workers. By attending this one-hour class, you will be able to: Learn how to hire workers who are best suited for your company and the role they will be performing Understand the importance of new hire orientation programs Protect your business with a comprehensive safety program that teaches new workers the basics before they step foot on the jobsite Train your workers to recognize & avoid jobsite hazard and protect others from harm Increase accountability with checklists and acknowledgement forms

Builder News Tour of Remodeled Homes August 7-9

The 18th annual Tour of Remodeled Homes will be held Friday – Sunday, August 7 - 9 providing an opportunity to showcase the very best in professional remodeling including complete home renovations, kitchens, baths, additions, outdoor living and more!

May is National Remodeling Month

A

ccording to NAHB, Americans spent $116 billion on improvements to owner-occupied units in 2013, down from a peak of $146 billion in 2006. NAHB’s remodeling forecast expects these expenditures to increase gradually as the broader housing market recovers. Beyond general recovery in the housing market, key factors driving increases in remodeling expenditures will include: the aging housing stock, needed aging in place remodeling work, and increasing interest in improving home efficiency and green remodeling. Area remodelers, suppliers and trade contractors are seeing a growing interest and increase by consumers to make both minor and major renovations to their homes. Kitchens, bathrooms and additions remain some of the more popular renovations. If you are involved in any aspect of remodeling, you are encouraged to get involved with our Remodelers Council. Meetings are held with both an educational and networking focus. The majority of our council meetings this year are being hosted at supplier showrooms to showcase new products and services. Upcoming meetings dates are noted below. Reservations are requested in advance on the GBA website as lunch will be provided. •

This initiative continues to be tremendously successful due to the generous contribution of Association members. To date through this every other year build, GBA members have constructed 50 Habitat homes and we’re building more this year! We will be conducting a one-week build the week of November 2-6 with the goal of constructing 5 homes. Anyone interested in participating – from providing materials and/or labor – to serving on our planning team – please contact Raising Roofs chair John Hodgin at (336) 362-0163 or Cheryl Collins at (336) 855-6255 or ccollins@greensborobuilders.org.
