Summer Favorites

W

e all have our annual rites of summer— whether it’s pizza at the pool nights, trips to the beach with family or friends, a crab feast, or a visit to the fair. But there’s always room for another family ritual. Last summer was the first time we took the kids to the beach. We’ve never been big beach people, so we waited until the girls were a little more self-sufficient and well beyond diapers and naptimes before heading to the beach. It was well worth the wait, the girls were able to make really good memories and enjoy all the best parts of a beach vacation—sand castles, waves, ice cream, and boardwalk arcades. We even happened to see a whale breaching a mere 50 feet from shore. Needless to say, a beach trip is now on our summer itinerary. With this last month of summer at hand, and perhaps a trip or two on your calendar, you’ll find something new to add to your family’s list of favorite summer activities. You can also head to page 12 to browse our annual Family Favorites!

These restaurants, parks, play places, shops and services come recommended by our readers and are a perfect place to start a search for a new-to-you experience. If that doesn’t do the trick, and you are looking for a new activity for your family, keep up with our 100 Days of Summer campaign online! There we’ve got recommendations for daytrips, activities, concerts, summer festivals and a whole lot more. Follow along at ChesapeakeFamily.com/100days. Here’s to an awesome summer, I hope you and your family are having fun making new memories and adding new fun to your favorite summer rituals.

Watermen’s Appreciation Day

I

f your summer has included a crab feast or a freshly caught rockfish dinner, you might want to thank a waterman. On August 11, you can do just that at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s annual Watermen’s Appreciation Day! Local watermen will compete in the Watermen’s Rodeo—a loud, raucous docking contest in which watermen will whip their boats around pilings faster than you can imagine, docking their boats to wild cheers from the crowd. On land, watermen will be serving festival guests steamed crabs, corn on the cob, and cold

beer, and there will be live music playing by Bird Dog and the Road Kings. Families can enjoy games and activities throughout the day, and in the afternoon take part in a rowboat competition. There will also be boat rides, and a silent auction. The event benefits the Talbot Watermen Association and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Tickets are $18 for adults, $8 for children ages 6 to 17, and free for kids 5 and under. Tickets include admission to all events for the day and all CBMM exhibitions and structures. Get all the details at cbmm.org.

Climbing Back up the Summer Slide

ummer is winding down, and your kids have probably spent endless hours at the pool, playing video games, or blissfully forgetting that school will eventually start again. That said, it might be time to use up a little of their remaining screen time getting back into the swing of things. The good news is that there are excellent online tools that can get kids back into the game without even noticing that they’re learning! Many parents are probably familiar with GoNoodle—the website used often in schools for brain breaks, dance parties and sing-alongs

on the white boards. While GoNoodle might seem like it’s for mere entertainment, it encourages kids to get up and move during their screen time, teaches basic language and math skills, encourages positive social behaviors and mindfulness. This summer GoNoodle has encouraged kids to use their screen time to get a little indoor exercise as well as learn cool stuff with a new initiative, which challenges kids across the world to rack up 15 Million Minutes of Movement and Mindfulness by playing GoNoodle. “When we hit this collective goal,” says GoNoodle, “we’ll unlock a brand new GoNoodle Champ for students to enjoy when they go back to school.” To achieve this lofty goal, GoNoodle is keeping kids learning with short, two- to seven-minute How To! videos. The shorts keep entertained as they learn things like how to make ice cream, do a burpee, beatbox, and make paper airplanes. New videos go live each week, keeping the kids entertained, engaged and get them ready for school before they know it. Check it out at gonoodle.com/summer. For those with older children or those with distinct interests, consider trying out online camps and courses through Outschool. This site offers live online classes with real teachers who are ready to share their passions with students around the globe. With topics ranging from pop culture fun like Harry Potter Potions class and Marvel Comics history to video game development in Minecraft and more, to serious school subjects like Mastering the Five Paragraph Essay, and STEM classes like video game design and a bevy of Minecraft fun, there’s something of interest for just about every kid. Outschool courses range from camp-length sessions to full semesterlong units, and meet at a variety of frequencies and times. Costs range accordingly. A weeklong Minecraft camp that meets for an hour and a half each day for five days costs $70. A one-time session of Harry Potter Potions costs just $10. Check it out at outschool.com.

The Newest in Sports Physicals

W

ith school sports practices beginning mid-August, it’s time for student athletes to get their annual sports physicals. This year the new Preparticipation Physical Evaluation (PPE) has expanded in scope to include youth who engage in physical activities outside of traditional sports. Health care providers now view the skateboarder, BMX racer or snowboarder the same as peers who participate in traditional organized sports such as soccer or football. The guidelines also urge middle-school through college-age athletes to get their sports physical during a well-child exam to ensure that

they receive comprehensive care by their primary health care provider. Many school districts require that student-athletes have a physical after June 1 to ensure that they are up to date for the approaching school year. If the timing does not coincide with the well-child exam, a sports physical is required. “A sports physical is a quick check to ensure that nothing has changed from your full physical and provide participation clearance for the school year,” says Susan Emerson, CPNP of Annapolis Pediatrics. “It is especially important to identify any possible life-threatening medical conditions such as heart conditions. Sports physicals are helpful to identify conditions that may limit participation such as concussions, lung problems like asthma, or musculoskeletal injuries.” Authors of the report found that athletes who receive only a sports physical at a retail-based clinic or school screening may not receive as thorough an exam because their comprehensive health history is not readily available. If an issue is detected, patients are referred back to their primary care physician for follow-up. Emerson concurs with the PPE recommendations. “Going to the pediatrician for a sports physical is important because they have access to your child’s entire medical record,” says Emerson. “This includes prior visits to specialists such as cardiology or orthopedics as well as their growth chart and immunization records. This allows for much better care than seeing a provider who does not know your child’s medical history.” The 2019 PPE guidelines also give special attention to athletes’ mental health; new guidance on the care of transgender athletes; suggestions for female athletes with regard to energy, menstrual health and bone density; new musculoskeletal tests for risk of patellofemoral and anterior cruciate ligament injuries; and highlight the importance of exercise for children with special needs. —Joyce Heid

AUGUST 2019

Millsboro, Delaware

A

s summer winds down and fall travel plans ramp up, many families will consider a last minute summer camping trip or gear up for fall camping before the weather gets too cold. But many will face some basic, yet important, questions. For example: Can we make this happen without bringing virtually every item in our bedrooms, kitchen, backyard and garage? Do we have to sleep on the ground, or can we simultaneously enjoy the great outdoors and some indoor comforts? And can we go somewhere where we’ll have something to do other than swat mosquitoes or fight with the kids over not having screen time? There’s no perfect destination that will produce 24/7 familial bliss—because moms, dads and kids all have different interests and are experts at pressing one another’s buttons. But by upgrading your camping experience a little (or a lot) you can enjoy the fun of camping and the comforts of a modern lifestyle all at the same time. Lucky for us, there are plenty of unique places in the Chesapeake region that offer diverse accommodations, from tree houses in the woods to cottages by the beach, with common creature comforts such as air conditioning and kitchens; traditional outdoor activities from hiking and canoeing to s’more-roasting and star-gazing; notso-traditional amenities, from poolside bars for parents to full-fledged water parks for kids; and of course, the opportunity to make lifelong memories. Here are five camping resorts that fit the family fun bill.

Massey’s Landing is a luxury campground that offers its guests what are, in my personal experience, the best beach cottages around. These 24 cottages, three of which are on extra-large “super sites” that include furnished tiki huts, convey a coastal vibe and offer gorgeous views of Rehoboth and Indian River bays. Each cottage includes every creature comfort that you’d expect from a typical beach rental, including a full kitchen; a full bathroom, A/C, Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, a screened in porch, grill, and fire pit. Massey’s also has access to fun perks that you wouldn’t expect, like the Paradise Landing Tiki Bar, a camp store and arcade, washers, and dryers, a private beach and huge pool with a swim-up bar, paddleboard, bike, and golf cart rentals, and free shuttle service to local attractions including Dogfish Head Brewery, golf courses and charter fishing outfits. If you think your kids could still find a way to proclaim boredom, Massey’s features weeklong kid’s camps on themes like rock n’ roll, dinosaurs, under the sea, and the Wild West. Massey’s is open the first weekend in April through the first weekend in November. Learn more at masseyslanding.com. AUGUST 2019

The Treehouse Camp—Maple Tree Campground Rohrersville, Maryland

PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE TREEHOUSE CAMP

Western Maryland’s Treehouse Camp is a secluded campground with 12 traditional campsites but also what are likely the most one-of-a-kind glamping accommodations in the state: tree houses. The Camp offers 18 Tree cottages and houses, all of which are insulated for year-round use. Then there’s the larger FireFly Tree House, which features a large lower deck with covered porch and a small upper covered porch, both of which glow at night thanks to solar-lighted ceilings. Finally, there’s the Hobbit House, a Shireharkening underground structure in which Frodo Baggins would feel right at home (electricity aside) thanks to its enchanted forest mural and thatch covered porch. The campground has indoor bathrooms, private showers, and a camp shop within a short walk of each tree house. When you’re not hanging out in your tree house or hiking and biking around the property’s 20 wooded acres, the camp offers direct access to Gathland State Park, where you can get on the Appalachian Trail, and is ten minutes or less from Harpers Ferry and Antietam Battlefield, caverns, fishing, swimming and tubing, and raft and canoe outfitters. The Cape Charles/Chesapeake Bay KOA is located just north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Surrounded by a 1,700-acre wildlife refuge, Cape Charles provides its guests a beautiful private beach, endless opportunities to experience nature via hiking or kayaking, and one of the newest glamping options under the sun: RV rentals. RV rentals feature a full bed, double-over-double bunk bed, and convertible dining area; a fully-equipped kitchen, including cookware and dishware; a full bath with tub and shower; hotel-level amenities including heating and air conditioning, cable TV, Wi-Fi, a Bluetooth stereo system; and, finally, a deck with table and chairs, fire pit, and a charcoal grill. The resort’s amenities include a beachfront restaurant and bar with live music on weekends; two pools; a fitness center; arcade; bike, golf cart, kayak and SUP rentals; a dog beach and park; and shuttle service to local attractions. Plus it hosts fun themed weekends, from Explore the Shore to Brew N Que. Cape Charles/Chesapeake Bay KOA is open March 30–October 31. Learn more at koa.com/campgrounds/ chesapeake-bay.

Chincoteague Island KOA Chincoteague, Virginia Chincoteague Island KOA has plenty of beach cottages, but also offers 13 of what are perhaps the most Instagram-worthy accommodations in the region: safari tents. Sitting atop an elevated platform with a furnished walk-out porch, these “rustic-chic” canvas tents are luxuriously furnished with two queen beds, a full futon, water and lighting, plus a fire ring outside. Beyond the tents, on-property attractions include a pool, playground, massive jumping pillow, activity room, shuffleboard, dog park, and canoe/kayak/paddleboard launch. Next to the campground is Maui Jack’s, a full-fledged water park that opened last summer and is the first on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The water park is owned by Blue Water Development, which also owns the campground, so Chincoteague guests receive exclusive discounts on passes to Maui Jack’s 620-foot long Lazy River, two 42-foot tall open-air Banzai Racer speed slides, three twisty-turny enclosed slides, North Shore Beach—a play area for the under-48inch crowd complete with tipping bucket, slides and spray toys. The water park also features rentable cabanas, Keko’s Bar & Grill, restrooms, showers, lockers, and free sunscreen dispensers. Lastly, because no visit to Chincoteague would be complete without seeing some wild ponies, don’t forget to visit the 14,000-acre Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and the Assateague Island National Seashore, both of which are just minutes from the KOA. As a bonus during this 50th anniversary Apollo 11 moon landing, consider visiting the nearby NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitors Center, too. Chincoteague Island KOA is open April 5–October 31. d n u o r g y a l P hopping

Levell By Ann

A

dam Kannegieser was looking for something to do with his youngest daughter while his eldest was at a party. “Since she was just with me, I thought it would be more fun to go to more than one park—like a bar crawl but for kids.” And, he says, “a lot of the parks nearby are small, so to get more variety, we could go to multiple parks.” Kannegieser and his daughter spent about 15 to 20 minutes (depending how much she liked it or if she found friends) at each park, then hopped in

the car and kept moving. It worked out, he says, “because they have different themes or unique equipment to keep her entertained. “Plus, the car rides helped to get her to take a break, get a snack and drink water. We also could talk about the parks and what she liked.” The playground hop turned out to be a success, and because Kannegieser wife, Jess, just so happens to be a graphic designer here at Chesapeake Family Life, the concept has taken off. While his initial park crawl was to local

neighborhood parks and their local elementary school, we’ve since kicked the game up a notch. Here are two three-park playground hops that we tested out ourselves ,one in Annapolis and another in northern Anne Arundel County. The sidebar also offers up an idea for a south county hop. For more ideas on great playgrounds near you, visit ChesapeakeFamily.com for our “Maryland’s Best Playgrounds” directory!

family fun NORTH COUNTY PLAYGROUND HOP (15–20 minutes between parks) These three playgrounds are a bit far apart but they’re all well worth the drive. We started at Downs Park in Pasadena, where the playground entertained the kids for a short while, but we spent more time treasure hunting on the beach and picnicking on the lawn and checking out the raptor cage. Friends joined us at Kinder Farm, where the kids had a great time romping on the luxuriously large playground and visiting the farm’s goats, geese, pigs and sheep. Finally we headed out to the airport loop’s Friendship Park, where the girls played on the relatively new play structure that had a climbing wall, slides and log-hopping. The kids covered their ears every time a plane roared overhead, but they laughed and liked each take-off anyway.

ALTERNATE STOP Lake Waterford Park

830 Pasadena Rd, Pasadena aacounty.org/departments/ recreation-parks/parks/ lake-waterford With brand-new interactive playground equipment, a lake for duck-watching, tennis courts, basketball courts, and bike trails, it’s a great park.

Downs Park

Kinder Farm Park

Friendship Park

8311 John Downs Loop, Pasadena aacounty.org/departments/recreationparks/parks/downs The playground here is nice, with a native plant garden for butterflies in the center of two large structures. There’s not much shade, but the structures include several slides, climbing obstacles and a wide area around them to run. We also spent time along the beach and went along a few trails, one of which led to a raptor cage holding a great horned owl and red-tailed hawk.

1001 Kinder Farm Park Road, Millersville aacounty.org/departments/recreationparks/parks/kinder-farm The playground is awesome. It’s got several different tiers of play areas with slides down to lower levels, a large shaded structure, swings, a rope climbing wall, and shaded benches for parents to relax. Just a few steps away from the mega playground, there’s a nice indoor bathroom, and the park’s farm animals. The park also has a 2.4mile bike/walking trail, and disc golf.

Park Pros: Close to the Parking lot and amphitheater (great for concert nights); beach access (no swimming) Park Cons: Parking is $6, year-long passes cost $30 and also work at Quiet Waters, Kinder Farm and Fort Smallwood.

Park Pros: Bathrooms nearby, large playground, live animals Park Cons: Parking is $6, year-long passes cost $30 (in-county residents; $40 out of county) and also work at Quiet Waters, Downs and Fort Smallwood.

1911 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie aacounty.org/locations-and-directions/ bwi-trail If you or your kids like planes, this is the spot. Just off Dorsey Road on the BWI Airport loop, this tiny park got a new play structure a few years ago and it’s in great shape, with a nice climbing wall, slides, logs to hop across and a nice shady spot for parents to sit. Depending on flight patterns, planes will either be taking off or landing regularly, which is loud and a little scary for the kids at first. The park is also a jumping off point for the airport’s biking trails, so the large parking lot can get full pretty quickly. Park Pros: Airplanes! Nice, rubber ground covering, close to Route 97. Park Cons: The only bathrooms are port-a-potties. AUGUST 2019

family fun

Register Now for Fall

ANNAPOLIS AREA PLAYGROUND HOP (5 minutes between parks) Annapolis is rife with excellent neighborhood beach parks, city parks and the county’s lovely Quiet Waters park. Early this summer the girls and I attempted a playground crawl to three in one afternoon, first to PAL park near Bay Ridge, then to Quiet Waters and on to the Newman Street Playground in downtown Annapolis. I had planned the excursion with the intention of stopping for ice cream downtown after playing at Newman Street, but we were derailed from our quest by having too much fun at Quiet Waters and needing to be at an appointment before we could finish, and landed at the Newman Street playground the next week after the Memorial Day parade. Not surprisingly, the playground was packed that day with dozens of families, but it was a fun stop nonetheless.

family fun Quiet Waters Park

Newman Street Playground

1025 Bay Ridge Rd, Annapolis palannapolis.com If your kids play sports in Annapolis you probably been to the PAL Park fields, and likely needed to wrestle a toddler or two away from the enticing new playground on the south side of the park. The newly renovated space has swings, lots to climb and hang from, a triple tandem slide, and fun crawl-in structures that resemble an old-school shape sorter and a 1970s spinning egg-pod chair.

600 Quiet Waters Park Rd, Annapolis aacounty.org/departments/recreationparks/parks/quiet-waters This Anne Arundel County Park has miles of wooded trails, beachcombing spots, a dog park, picnic pavilions, canoe and kayak rentals, and several playgrounds scattered throughout the park. Its biggest playground has two swingsets and two play structures— one for tiny tots and a giant set for the bigger kids. Both have soft rubber flooring underneath.

Park Pros: Great small playground, small trail in the woods nearby, tennis courts and only crowded during sports practices or games. Park Cons: Bathrooms not always open, not a lot else to do there.

Park Pros: Lots of shade, trails lead to other small playgrounds, picnic spots, plenty of parkins Park Cons: Port-a-potties only by the playground (indoor bathrooms at the Visitor Center), parking is $6, year-long passes cost $30 (in-county residents; $40 out of county) and also work at Downs, Kinder Farm and Fort Smallwood parks.

199 Green St. Annapolis annapolis.gov If you’re in downtown Annapolis and need a play break for the kids, the Newman/Green street playground is it. It’s directly across the street from the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel, has lots of shade for the parents, and plenty of climbing opportunities. Big kid/little kid swings are situated close enough to the slides so that parents can push one kid while watching another on the slides. For toddlers there is an enclosed smaller playground next to the elementary school.

PAL Park

Park Pros: Great spot to play in downtown Annapolis, ending the day with lunch or ice cream. Park Cons: No bathroom on site, public bathrooms are in Market House or Harbormaster’s office. The playground’s mulch will result in kids getting stuff stuck in their shoes repeatedly.

Mission Escape Rooms is fun, interactive entertainment. A real-life escape experience designed for small groups of 1-10 people. Your mission is simple: work together as a team, testing your wits and skills, to escape from a locked room in 50 minutes or less. While the goal is simple, the game is challenging.
