Moving the Ball Forward “We are very optimistic that this fall we will be back to normal,” says Powell, noting that he’s sure athletes—especially seniors—are ready for a sense of normalcy. Boyd says he’s also “cautiously optimistic” that Key will see a full season of games come fall.
Keeping Student Athletes Safe During the Heat
“A good deal will depend on how many student-athletes are vaccinated and the local metrics for COVID,” he says, adding that he suspects certain safety measures will endure. “I can imagine that we might continue to socially distance and separate restrooms by team and limit the sharing of equipment in order to minimize contact. Little things, like physically shaking hands after games, might continue to be replaced by other ways of showing appreciation for our opponents.” No matter which precautions remain in place, Boyd says there’s been a shift in how many of the athletes and staff think about their

I saw how happy and grateful students and coaches were this spring to be able to play the games they love with their friends. I expect that this is something that will continue for a little while.” Ronnie Vesnaver, Soccer and Lacrosse Coach at Gunston, found that sports were an essential outlet for students during a difficult time. “This past year has shown me in a very tangible way how

important extracurriculars are for our students not just for their own enrichment, but also for their mental health and sense of wholeness,” he says. This year, Vesnaver wants to harness that power. “Moving forward, we’re hoping to structure in more traditions and bonding amongst the team on and off the field in order to create a more cohesive and inspired group of players.”

Choosing the Right Skincare Products
W
ith so many skin care products available, including cleansers, moisturizers and cosmetics, it can be difficult to know which products to choose. While understanding your
skin type can help you choose products formulated for your skin,
“Sometimes, discovering the cause of skin irritation is easier said than done,” says Dr. Brod. “If it is difficult to pinpoint the exact ingredient causing your skin to react, talk to a board-certified dermatologist, who can help. You may need a medical test called patch testing to help find out what is causing your irritation.” Once the cause has been identified, says Dr. Brod, it’s important to avoid it. For example, if fragrance in skin care products is causing your skin to react, he says, opt for products that are labeled “fragrance free.” Remain cautious with certain skin care products that are labeled “unscented” or have plant- based botanical ingredients, as these products may still have fragrance-related ingredients.

your skin.
These tips are demonstrated in “How to Test Skin Care Products,” a
Sometimes, a skin care ingredient, such as one of the preservatives, can trigger a condition called allergic contact dermatitis, which can cause your skin to become red, itchy and swollen. Fortunately, board-certified dermatologists from the
video posted to the AAD website and YouTube channel. This video is part of the AAD’s “Video of the Month” series, which offers tips people can use to properly care for their skin, hair and nails.
American Academy of Dermatology say testing skin care products on several small areas of your skin first can help predict whether you’ll experience a negative skin reaction. “There are more than 15,000 allergens that can cause allergic contact dermatitis, and skin care products are a common cause,” says board-certified dermatologist Bruce A. Brod, MD, FAAD. “Even products labeled ‘hypoallergenic’, ‘natural’ or ‘clean’ can cause a skin reaction, so it’s helpful to test skin care products before using them as you would normally.”
How to Test Products To test a skin care product, Dr. Brod recommends the following tips: Apply the product to a test spot twice daily for seven to 10 days. Choose a quarter-sized spot on your skin where the product won’t be rubbed or washed away, such as the underside of your arm or the bend of your elbow. Use the normal amount and thickness you would use as if you were applying the product regularly. Leave the product on your skin for as long as you would normally. If you’re testing something that you would usually wash off, like a cleanser, keep it on your skin for five minutes or as long as the instructions say. If after seven to 10 days you don’t have a skin reaction, such as red, itchy, or swollen skin, go ahead and use the product. Keep in mind that some ingredients, such as retinol and glycolic acid, can irritate your skin, particularly if your skin is sensitive. This is normal and temporary. If you develop a skin reaction, gently wash the product off as soon as possible, and don’t use it again. Apply a cool compress or petroleum jelly to relieve your skin, if needed. If your reaction to a product is severe and not relieved with cool compresses or petroleum jelly, you may need to see a dermatologist to help manage your symptoms

Give Back, Give Blood
N
ational Blood Donor Month is recognized in the month of January and as we continue to weather the on-going pandemic, there is still a high demand for blood donations. From cancer
patients in need of platelets to accident victims and other types of emergencies, blood donations ensure their very survival. According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood. “Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center is experiencing a critical need for blood, platelets, and COVID Convalescent Plasma to help patients in our community,” says Felisha Hall, Blood Donor Center Recruitment Coordinator-Lead at Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center. Unfortunately, donations have declined due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Those who hesitate should know that every possible precaution is taken to ensure the safety not only of those who will receive the blood, but also those donating. In a call to action by the FDA and other federal agencies, Admiral Brett P. Giroir, M.D. Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services emphatically notes, “It is safe to donate blood. Part of preparedness includes a robust blood supply. Healthy individuals should schedule an appointment to donate today to ensure that blood is available for those patients who need it.”
Who can give blood? Healthy individuals age 16 and over who weigh at least 110 pounds, and have no sign of illness can donate. There are restrictions on certain medications, blood pressure, blood count, recent tattoos, and a few other stipulations. If you are unsure if you qualify, call 800-733-2767, or visit the Red Cross website. Donating blood takes approximately an hour. In that hour, one pint of blood is drawn that could possibly save up to three lives. The American Red Cross is testing all blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies, which may help current coronavirus patients in need of convalescent plasma transfusions. In addition to the Red Cross, many local hospitals, including Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center have donor centers with convenient hours and offer community drives.

WHERE TO FIND STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES IN CENTRAL MARYLAND By Jillian Amodio 22 • BIG BOOK OF HEALTH 2022 2021 • ChesapeakeFamily.com
T
he start of a school year is always a time of transition and students may need additional support services. For many, this period of transition is further amplified by the current state
of our ongoing attempts to live, learn, and adapt through the COVID era. Parents and their children may find themselves in need of support services for a wide range of topics pertaining to academic, social emotional, or mental health related concerns. Fortunately our area is ripe with providers who are skilled at offering additional support to children, parents, and families as needed.
In-School Support With regards to in-school support, a good place to begin
Those who develop strong social and emotional skills tend to be happier, are more motivated to learn and perform better academically.
is often with your school counselor. Not only are they the most familiar with your child (aside from you as the parent or caregiver of course) but they are also able to help identify areas in need of further assistance for each child as an individual. This could be offering academic support, 504 or IEP planning, methods of calming fears, concerns, or anxieties about returning to the classroom setting or reconnecting with peers, and various other areas of concern. The school is also a great way to find referrals for any specific need that may be better met off school property. If your child is in need of academic support, such as tutoring, there are a myriad of options available as well. You can seek insight and referrals from teachers or school staff, or begin with a few of the options listed below. • The Anne Arundel County Tutoring Pool lists all certified teachers in Anne Arundel County who are available to offer additional tutoring services. • Kumon offers academic enrichment services in reading and math. • Huntington Learning Center offers information webinars, tutoring, and test prep. • Mathnasium offers individual math instruction for grades K through 12.

bbh | health notes Get Vax Facts The Learning First Alliance (LFA) has launched a new public information campaign, “The Power to Protect,” and a new website, www.getvaxfacts.org, to remind parents and guardians of the need for these routine shots and how to obtain vaccinations at no cost if needed. LFA is a coalition of 12 national education groups representing 10 million parents, teachers, support staff, principals, superintendents, school board members, and teacher educators. This effort to encourage parents and caregivers to bring their children up to date on their vaccinations will help keep schools safe, students healthy and ready to learn, and allow for a safe return to in person classes in the fall.
Missed Vaccinations According to a recent Blue Cross Blue Shield survey, 40% of parents say their children missed vaccinations due to COVID-

19. Vaccines provide powerful protection against 16 serious diseases throughout a child’s lifetime and keep those diseases from spreading to others, including students, teachers, staff, and vulnerable community members. “We know that caregivers are stressed and many have delayed doctor’s appointments or opted for telehealth appointments during the pandemic,” said Richard M. Long, executive director of the Learning First Alliance. “Childhood and adolescent vaccination rates in the United States have declined at an alarming rate as a result of missed appointments.”
Time is of the Essence Time is of the essence particularly for adolescents who may soon be eligible to receive a COVID 19 vaccine. If a COVID-19 vaccine is authorized for children 12 and older, there is an extended period (about 54 days) before, during, or after getting the vaccine when they can’t receive another vaccination. That could limit a teen’s ability to get the COVID-19 vaccine or return to school in-person if they are off-schedule with their vaccinations. “If vaccination rates continue to fall, these diseases will return, leading to new outbreaks in schools and communities even as we are all working to have more and more students attending

During the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of children—at least
one in five—have missed critical vaccinations that keep them healthy and our communities free from disease. Students without these vaccinations may not be eligible to return to in-person learning in the fall. Even worse, losing herd immunity could put millions of unvaccinated children and adults at risk for deadly or debilitating diseases such as measles, whooping cough and polio.
chair of the LFA board of directors and Assistant to the President for Educational Issues at the American Federation of Teachers. “And that is the last thing anyone wants to see as we are finally gaining ground on COVID-19.” This website, www.Getvaxfacts.org, has information on each of the 16 diseases and conditions that are protected by vaccinations for children and adolescents, charts for scheduling vaccines and information on how to obtain a free vaccination. The website is part of a larger campaign to engage educators to help publicize the need for routine childhood vaccines and dangers of going without, including podcasts with leading experts speaking about the challenges. Q&A
AT WHAT AGE SHOULD MY CHILD SEE AN ORTHODONTIST? According to the American Association of Orthodontists, 7 years old is the perfect age for a child’s first orthodontic screening—about the same time many kids get their first adult molars. Why so young you ask? Because at that age it is easier to correct any concerning issues while the mouth is still growing and the body can adapt to changes. In most cases, you can prevent relatively simple problems turning into major ordeals by intervening with early orthodontic treatment, also known as Phase I Treatment. Early orthodontic screening also leaves room for planning. Whether or not a child receives immediate treatment, the doctors at Labbe Family Orthodontics can start to monitor your child’s development by scheduling regular and timely appointments. For example, we may ask you to come in every 6-8 months for one of our doctors to give a thorough oral exam. This way, we can administer the right treatment at the right time allowing the child will get the most out of it. Don’t worry… there is NO CHARGE until the actual treatment begins. Plus, we have FUN! We love getting to know our families and building relationships! We go above and beyond to make sure that your child has a memorable, comfortable and enjoyable orthodontic journey.
WHEN IS EARLY INTERVENTION OR PHASE I TREATMENT NECESSARY? There are a few stand out reasons that Phase I treatment would be beneficial. For example, if the patient has: •A crossbite •An underbite •Thumb or finger sucking habit •Consistent mouth breathing •An overbite or overjet
•Severe crowding of the teeth •Premature loss of baby teeth or missing permanent teeth •A tongue thrust
Our goal is to prevent the extraction of permanent teeth. With Phase I treatment, we are often able to create the room necessary or correct the issues that would warrant extractions.
WHAT IS THE AVERAGE TREATMENT TIME FOR PHASE I TREATMENT? Typically, treatment time for Phase I is about a year. If the patient is cooperative, has good hygiene and takes care of the appliances, treatment will go smoothly and the necessary corrections can be made in 12 – 15 months. After active Phase I treatment, a retainer is worn to maintain arch width and hold the teeth in place while the permanent teeth are erupting. What’s really cool is that we can see our “Resting Phase” patients while they are at home using our latest “Dental Monitoring” technology. This saves you time and trips to the office by monitoring growth and development remotely.
HOW CAN I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT? We offer complimentary consultations and would LOVE to see you. You can reach Labbe Family Orthodontics at 410-267-7300 or by visiting our website at www.labbefamilyortho.com. There are four locations to serve you: Annapolis, Crofton, Bowie and Greenbelt. At Labbe Family Orthodontics we accept most insurance plans, have interest free financing and can work with most budgets. We never want finances to get in the way of a beautiful smile!
