A Homemade Birthday Bash
ho doesn’t love a good kid birthday party? I love the sheer joy the kids get from celebrating their birthday with their friends, the homemade cards they make for one another, and the genuine excitement they feel as they turn one year older. My kids (and I’m sure they’re not the only ones) have a habit of planning their parties months in advance. A full three months before my daughter’s party, she had a list of kids secured, a list of games she wanted to play, and a schedule all planned. She was adamant that the party be at our house. Sounded easy enough to me at the time, but a week before the party the guest list suddenly grew and somehow I decided we needed more games. The next thing I knew, I had about 48 hours to plan the details, shop for food and decorations, and organize a giant scavenger hunt. Plus the girls were in their school play two nights before the party and my husband’s parents were in town. And, because her birthday is in March, the weather was iffy at best. As luck would have it, the weather was fine, I managed to organize the indoor games, and
my husband tackled the outdoor ones. The party went off without a hitch, and 12 (I think there were 12, it was hard to count them all as they zoomed around the house and yard) seven- and eight-year-olds had a grand time. In the chaos I vowed never to host another birthday party at our house, but I’m sure planning is already underway for next year and before I know it the guest list will be established and I’ll be making cupcakes and hanging decorations for the next big bash. If you’re like me and your kids love a good party, head to our party directory on page 10. There you can find out about great places that will take the stress out of party planning for you so you can enjoy the day rather than stress about pulling it off.

Building Better Riders With PedalPower Kids
o
n a chilly spring day at Weems Creek Nursery School, seven three- and fouryear-olds zoomed around in circles on the playground on tiny balance bikes. The kids were learning balancing skills with their teacher, Rachel Varn, the owner of PedalPower Kids. Varn was encouraging and patient with the little ones, and had a command of the group as they practiced bunny hops, blast-off starts and obstacle courses. This was only the kids’ second lesson with Varn, yet not a tear was shed even as kids bumped into each other and crashed on several occasions. It’s no surprise the kids were having fun and were calm in learning. Varn has been dubbed by local parents as the “Bike Whisperer,” having taught over 250 kids since she opened PedalPower Kids a year ago. Varn decided to start PedalPower Kids when she realized there were a lot of parents who
were frustrated that their kids weren’t riding. “I knew that families in this area were using great swim instructors and, as a lifelong cyclist, I thought that there would be a market to do something similar,” says Varn. “So I started offering private lessons. I quickly added on camps through Anne Arundel County, and then through the city. And it’s grown like crazy.” Varn, who lives in Severna Park with her husband and four kids ranging from second grade to a freshman in college, has worked in the bike industry, as well as in franchising. Plus she has a background that includes a lot of teaching and coaching, including in track, field hockey and swimming, she says. Varn says there’s two pieces of learning to ride a bike—balance and pedaling. “Pedaling, developmentally, is something that most kids five and above can do able to easily,” she says, adding that many kids are “stuck on the balance continued on page 8 M AY 2019

here are a lot of choices to be made when you’re pregnant. Should you still work out? Should you deliver in a hospital or in a birthing center? Hire a doula? How do you make a birth plan? How can you plan for expenses? Should you breastfeed? How do you breastfeed? It can be maddening and stressful, to say the least. Thanks to the nonprofit group Maryland Families for Safe Birth, many of your pregnancy, birth and newborn questions will be answered on May 19, at the Baltimore Birth Festival in Patterson Park. The organization has worked since 2010 to deliver “evidence based, culturally sensitive maternity care for

Maryland families through legislative action and supports legislative efforts to license midwives and to study racial disparities in neonatal death rates.” According to the group, the event “will be a place for families to discover the local support available for pregnancy, post-partum and parenting.” During this one-day, familyfriendly festival, more than 75 vendors will be on site, including doulas, midwives, photographers, pregnancy care centers, physical therapists and breastfeeding consultants. There will also be over $4,000 in giveaways, as well as fun activities for kids, like face painting, a kid-friendly DJ, balloon animals, live animals from Irvine Nature M AY 2019
Center, and family yoga demonstrations. The festival is free, though VIP tickets can be purchased for $20 on the Baltimore Birth Festival event page on Facebook. Only 100 VIP tickets will be sold, which will include extra raffle tickets, and a swag bag of amazing products for babies and moms valued at over $100. Head to the Baltimore Birth Festival on May 19 at Patterson Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More details, including vendors, giveaways and raffle items can be found at marylandfamiliesforsafebirth. org or on the event’s Facebook page. —Ann Levelle
piece, and that’s rooted in fear. So the way that I teach is really focused on developing balance, developing the core skills and independence. We put all the control back on the child.” Also woven into that curriculum are lots of games and fun stuff, which helps kids develop a rapport with the instructor and to feel comfortable on their bikes. Riders also learn skills that parents might not recognize need to be taught—like how to get on and off a bike properly and how to use brakes the right way. When it comes to picking bikes for your child, Varn says developing trust in the bike is key. “I think a lot of the trouble that kids have is because their bikes are incredibly heavy, and really unwieldy.” She teaches kids almost exclusively on her fleet of Woom bikes, which range from balance bikes to beginner and big kid bikes. “But, whatever we’re doing,” she says, “we’re always going to transition them back to the bike that they’re going to ultimately be using. Now that PedalPower Kids has taken off, Varn is offering camps this summer at Pip Moyer Recreation Center in Annapolis and Kinder Farm Park in Millersville. For kids who want to become better riders, or who want an opportunity to get out and ride more often, PedalPower offers bike clubs where kids meet and ride on trails and in parks. PedalPower Kids also hosts bike rodeos at organized rides and other community and school events. Varn sets up a number of different kinds of safety and skill stations at the events, where kids can also learn about bike, traffic, and helmet safety. “It’s my goal to get out there and touch larger populations and not just the families that can afford classes and bike rodeos or a nice way to do that,” Varn says. Whether your kids are just starting to toddle along on a balance bike, need the confidence to ride on their own or are looking for a group of biking buddies, Pedal Power Kids has something for all skill levels. Check out the company’s programs at pedalpowerkids.com. —Ann Levelle

L
ayla Tiberio is a senior at Northeast High School. She plays flute in the concert band, is captain of the varsity swim team, and works as a lifeguard and swim instructor at North Arundel Aquatic Center. To say she is busy is an understatement, but she always has time for her friends. Especially a special friend named Bryan Knipp. His happiness and positive attitude always puts her in a good mood. Layla met Bryan, a student with Down Syndrome, through her school’s Unified Tennis program. Then Layla’s mom, a social worker, introduced her to a program called Best Buddies, a nonprofit that creates
opportunities for one-to-one friendships for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The combination of the two inspired her to start a Best Buddies chapter at Northeast the summer before her junior year, under the direction of a faculty advisor. “It was truly because of Bryan that I started the Best Buddies Club, because I wanted others to experience a lasting friendship just like ours,” says Layla. At Northeast, the chapter fosters these interactions through a variety of activities, including monthly meetings and outings such as bowling, karaoke, and ice cream parties. The group also participates in community
outreach throughout the year in events such as the school’s Trunk or Treat at Halloween and hosting “Friendsgiving” during Thanksgiving time. During the club’s first there were 15 student pairings. Layla was thrilled that number has more than doubled this year. “This month, we have one of our biggest events coming up called Spread the Word to End the Word,” says Layla, “we are having students pledge that they will not say the R-word so that we can celebrate inclusion and acceptance. After all, I believe that students shouldn’t be defined by their disabilities, but rather celebrated [for] the special abilities that they have.” In Maryland there are 115 schools that have a Best Buddies chapter. Vince Fiduccia, state director for Best Buddies Maryland, says “Currently we have over 5,000 participants statewide, this includes both those with and without disabilities. There are programs in middle schools, high schools, colleges and even a few elementary schools.” Layla and Bryan are happy to be ambassadors for the program and recently served as “sous chefs” at Tastebuds, an annual fundraising event for Best Buddies Maryland. “Not only were we were able to represent Best Buddies Maryland, but also shuck oyster shells open and eat lots of food, which is one of our favorite activities,” says Layla. “We have also had the opportunity to speak to the Best Buddies Committee about our lasting friendship and the benefits of the program.” Layla will be attending Salisbury University in the fall to pursue a double major in Psychology and Exercise Science. She hopes to become a physical therapist for people with special needs. She knows her friendship with Bryan will last long beyond graduation. “Bryan continues to inspire me every single day and has made me a better person.” Bryan agrees, “Me and Layla are best buddies,” he says. “I love being part of Best Buddies with her because we’ve done taste buds, bowling, pizza parties, and we do ambassador speeches together. Me and Layla hang out together and we also text and talk on the phone.” Best Buddies programs are run with support from a faculty advisor and training and development from the staff at Best Buddies Maryland. If you would like more information about starting a Best Buddies chapter at your school, contact Julia Rodricks at juliarodricks@bestbuddies.org. —Joyce Heid M AY 2019

Climbing the road to recovery Teens battling addiction have a new way to get help. BY JOYCE HEID
A
star athlete being scouted by colleges is sidelined by an unfortunate injury and becomes dependent on pain medication. A gifted musician slated to perform a solo in the school talent show self medicates with street drugs to deal with the anxiety of performing. One of the “popular kids” is actually an introvert who can only face going to school each day by drinking before school each morning. Substance abuse doesn’t discriminate. It is not an “adult” problem. Last school year, 327 Anne Arundel County students who were suspected to be under the influence of some substance were seen in county school health rooms. National statistics also show that one in 10 adolescents with a substance use disorder receives no treatment. Fortunately, there is a new tool for high school students seeking a way to confront the demons of substance abuse. The Anne Arundel County Department of Health and the County Public Schools has formed a partnership and developed the STAR (Screening Teens to Access Recovery) Program, which allows school health nurses in every county high school to utilize technology to connect students in a telesession with a licensed therapist from the Department of Health. Sessions take place through a secure portal to ensure privacy.
Based on the screening, the therapist works with the student to explore available treatment options and decide the next steps. A student does not need a referral or parental permission to seek help, he or she just has to see the school nurse and ask. However, the therapist and school health nurse will encourage those seeking help to include their parents, guardians, caregiver or another trusted adult in the process. Screening Therapist Kathy Waisman-Bush says the objective is to make students feel comfortable about opening up about their substance abuse and any other stressors that may be making life difficult. “During the brief screening process, we discuss with the student what brought them to ask for assistance, who they see as their system of support, the specific substance(s) of use, frequency of use, and resulting consequences if any,” says Waisman-Bush. “We briefly discuss how long they have been using any particular substance(s) and how they came to use this substance. For instance, questions around being prescribed a particular medication or use of medication independent of adult supervision is important.” The therapist tries to develop a snapshot of the whole student, Waisman-Bush says, “because mental health concerns and substance misuse consistently coexist for
many adolescents. Getting a sense of all symptoms is important in offering treatment options.” For example, she notes, if a student is self-medicating with substances to manage stress, anxiety, or depression, the correct referral would be for mental health treatment with a therapist that sees co-occurring cases. This will determine if outpatient counseling will suffice, or if the student requires more intensive in-patient treatment and therapy. School Health Nurse Tracy Marcalus, BSN, RN, who serves the students of Arundel High School hopes parents are receptive to the program. “It never hurts for a parent to ask their student if he/she needs help with an addictive substance,” Marcalus says. If parents are concerned about negative patterns with their student making poor choices about substances, they should tell the teen to visit the school nurse to learn about the STAR program. “It is private and confidential. As a community—parent, teacher, nurse—the best we can do is try. Even if the student chooses not to proceed through the program, he or she will have a better understanding of the resources available in school when ready.” More information about the STAR program is available on the county health website, aahealth.org.

ver dreamed of spending your days gathering eggs, picking berries and bottle-feeding baby calves? Now you can—on a farm stay vacation. Farm stays have long been popular in Europe, and now more American farms are opening their doors to give families the chance to experience life on a real working farm. “Families that choose a farm stay vacation are looking for a connection to the natural world; they want their children to see and experience something that they may have only seen in books,” says Scotti Jones, executive director of Farm Stays USA, an organization dedicated to promoting agritourism and farm stays. “A farm stay is a hands-on experience. Most people have never eaten an egg they have just gathered or seen where their food is produced. It’s an educational opportunity, but also the chance to experience rural hospitality and great food,” Jones says. Like many multi-generational farmers, the Hull family began hosting visitors as a way to offset the rising costs of the farm, but the benefits have been far-reaching. “We have met wonderful families from all over the world,” Sherry says, “and it’s rewarding to see guests leave our farm feeling so refreshed. It can be simple, but so impactful to bring a child to a farm.” On a farm stay, families are invited to pitch in with morning chores like milking cows and feeding horses, and enjoy the simple pleasures of farm life, like porch rocking and evening campfires. “A farm visit can be a wonderful bonding opportunity and it gives kids an understanding and respect for what farmers do and how hard they work,” Hull says. With more than 1,500 farm stays in the U.S., you can find a one that offers everything from fishing to foraging. Here are five down-to-earth options for experiencing life the way Old McDonald intended.

Hull-O Farms In the Catskill Mountains two hours north of New York City, Hull-O Farms welcomes guests to a genuine experience on a working dairy farm. There you can spend the morning milking cows, feeding baby animals like sheep, goats, calves and bunnies, or visit with the farm’s horses and ducks. Visitors can gather eggs, take a hayride, or spend a lazy afternoon fishing at the farm’s four-acre pond. At night, enjoy a campfire sing-a-long with local musicians while indulging in the farm’s famous brownie sundaes. Hull-O Farms offers three guesthouses, each with its own private living space, and is centrally located for exploring the area’s rich history and scenic mountain views.
Verdant View Farm For authentic country living, head to Verdant View Farms in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country. There you can visit with the farm’s cows, goats, chickens, pigs, or the farm’s beloved dog, Scooby. At 7:30 each morning, join the farm crew for chores that might include bottle-feeding baby calves, milking the cows, feeding the chickens, or gathering eggs. Breakfast might include locally sourced milk and yogurt, fruit, fresh eggs, homemade jam, and produce from the kitchen garden. Visitors to Verdant View have the opportunity to add educational aspects to their stay, such as learning to make artisan cheeses, goat’s-milk soap or homemade ice cream. The farm is ideally situated for exploring the area’s Amish country attractions like Dutch Wonderland or the Strasburg Railroad.

A space to build, make and create The Annapolis Makerspace provides the space and equipment for members to get creative. BY STEVE ADAMS
I
f you are, were, or want to be a maker—someone who creates something for fun, practicality, or both—you likely know that it takes more than just some free time and intention to produce whatever your heart desires. It takes materials, tools, space and know-how, too. Some of us are lucky enough to possess these common necessities of making (or at least have a friend or family member who does). But there’s also good news for those who don’t: makerspaces have you covered! At the Annapolis Makerspace, a nonprofit community workshop space that offers far more than the bare necessities, people who want to work

with their hands, and are interested in anything from robotics, fabrication, electronics, woodworking, metalworking, and beyond have the space and tools to work on whatever they like. As an added bonus, members can learn from each other and hang out with new friends. In July 2017 a group of local Annapolis makers connected through meetup.com. The makers soon concluded that there were enough of them to incorporate and, through membership dues and donations, sublease a local engineering startup’s industrial space. The Annapolis Makerspace quickly grew, and in June 2018 moved into its own home, in an industrial park on General’s Highway, next to Annapolis Bowl.
Annapolis Makerspace's industrial 3D printer and (top) a group of makers at a special makerspace cooking night.
The Annapolis Makerspace has a warehouse atmosphere, but it is also impeccably clean and features a tremendous amount of tools. Trevor Gryffyn, president of Annapolis Makerspace, says the cleanliness reflects the members’ “leave no trace” ethos, which formed both out of respect for each other and the tools. By keeping the makerspace tidy, all tools stay in their rightful places. Members also participate in a shop cleanup day once a month. The number of diverse tools and equipment in the makerspace is impressive—from an industrial-grade 3D printer to high-tech precision saws and laser cutters. Gryffyn says they were acquired through donations, member “loans” and members’ ongoing attention to and pursuit of Craigslist listings (which resulted in the space’s newest piece of equipment: a decadesold but amazingly operational Epsilon Summit die-cut printer). The tools help members with projects that run the gamut from practical to profitable. During a recent visit one member was using the 3D printer to create dozens of plastic playing pieces to replace the flimsy cardboard ones that came with her favorite board game, while one of the youngest members showed off a set of large wooden standup Peppa Pig decorations that she had cut with the CNC router and planned to rent out for kids’ birthday parties. Some of the many other projects that members have worked on, Gryffyn says, include: • Every prop for a school play built by a member who used virtually every electric saw, from table to miter to reciprocating. • A handmade jewelry box/Valentine’s Day gift made over the course of many late nights by an Annapolis policeman who, because he lived in a condo with a newborn and noise restrictions, had nowhere else to work. • An extremely precise pendulum clock made entirely of wood. • A custom wiring system to measure an antique Jensen Interceptor
automobile’s air flow and temperature readings. • A multitude of custom-cut and 3D-printed pieces to strike a robotic musical band’s xylophone and toy piano keys. • A 3D-printed face with built-in electronics that enable it to sense and follow motion.

Not only does the makerspace provide its members with access to whatever tools and equipment they might need, it also boasts a community of makers ready to talk shop, provide advice and even give hands-on help. Members communicate in person and on Slack about their projects, including asking for help and advice. “When we started the space, I thought the main benefit would be access to more tools and a larger workspace,” says Jack Warpinski, founder and former president of Annapolis Makerspace. “Now I realize that the relationships
and knowledge shared between members is probably where the true value of a makerspace lies.” Beyond helping one another with individual projects, makerspace members share knowledge in a more formal form during weekly woodworking, electronics, sewing, and game night sessions, as well as during one-off or periodic memberrun workshops on activities such as wood burning and etching, tie-dyeing, card-making, and even kimchi-cooking. Gryffyn stressed that in the interest of raising awareness of the space and supporting making, all activities are open to the public, including children accompanied by an adult, and that he’s even open to outside artisans using the space to host classes, including those with a fee, at no charge. Gryffyn and other makerspace members support making and learning regardless of where it occurs. Gryffyn highlights upcoming opportunities happening in the area like archaeology events at Londontowne or STEMfocused events at various county libraries. He also shares the message about the makerspace, its members and making in general during the “Makers’ Minute” on the Eye On Annapolis News Brief each Thursday, and during the monthly Annapolis’s First Sunday Festival. “While we want our makerspace to continue growing and to be a catalyst for great people to interact and learn and grow themselves,” Gryffyn says. “We want others to do the same so that at the end of the day, anyone who has a desire to make has a place to make.” To learn more about Annapolis Makerspace or how to become a member, visit makeannapolis.org or stop by its monthly open house, held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at 2014 Renard Court, Unit C, in Annapolis. ool Bay breezes, workboats grinding by, the prickle of sun and the freedom of a day on the open water—there is no better way to spend a sultry summer day in Maryland than
cruising on the Chesapeake. But boat ownership isn’t a prerequisite to beating the heat on the Bay. Maryland’s waterfront towns and cities boast plenty of familyfriendly watercraft perfect for a day-long cruise or a three-hour tour. Whether it’s a tall ship, a skipjack, or a packet boat, you can take your family out on the water to learn about the Bay’s history, ecology, or just enjoy a relaxing sunset cruise on the Chesapeake. Check out these six tour boats for a wide variety of fun trips on the Bay.

Welcome to the “Sailing Capital of the United States!” Whether its aboard Woodwind or Woodwind II, these classic 74-foot schooners provide a wonderful way to introduce your family to the joys of sailing out of Annapolis harbor. Elegant and comfortable, with friendly, capable captains and crew well-seasoned in family on-the-water experiences, Woodwind’s two-hour public cruises are perfect for families with children over five. Little ones will love seeing the Bay Bridge (and maybe even sailing underneath), spotting the iconic Thomas Point Lighthouse, and getting hands-on with a turn at the wheel. With up to four cruises a day, it’s easy to fit in a sail on the Woodwind during a day or afternoon visit to Annapolis.
The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is fantastic destination for families, with its working boatshop, Bay-themed exhibits and Hooper Strait Lighthouse. The fun continues onboard the museum’s historic buyboat, Winnie Estelle, which takes visitors of all ages out on the Miles River. Once part of the Bay’s fleet of middlemen that bought oysters and fish from watermen and hauled them to Chesapeake cities for processing, authentic buyboats are scarce today—making a Winnie Estelle cruise extra special. On this 45-minute cruise, families will hear stories about watermen and workboats, spot rays, eagles, osprey and sometimes even dolphins, and take a turn at the wheel. Themed ecology cruises for families with hands-on science activities are also available on select dates.
A sunset cruise on Chestertown’s 65-foot classic touring yacht, River Packet, is like a trip back to the Bay’s great steamboat era, when travelers enjoyed excellent food, drinks, and comfort along with stunning river views. The lower cabin is climate controlled with a small bar and catered eats for cruisers, while the expansive upper deck provides ample seating and great views of the Chestertown waterfront, watermen’s poundnets, and the Chester River bridge. Cruises run on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. For families with an eye toward an earlier bedtime, a Saturday afternoon tour or Sunday brunch cruise might be just the ticket. All children’s admission 12 and under is discounted.

As part of a day or weekend getaway to St. Michaels, a narrated cruise aboard the Patriot is a wonderful way to enjoy the gorgeous harbor and Miles River views with the entire family. With a climate-controlled interior, a full snack bar, restroom facilities and stroller access, the Patriot provides a full complement of amenities that parents will appreciate. The Patriot is also dog-friendly, so plan to bring the family pooch. The vessel’s two-story design with top deck and promenade as well as ample outdoor seating gives cruise-goers a front-row seat for the lovely river scenery. Kids will have fun ospreyspotting at the nest on the channel marker as the Patriot leaves St. Michaels harbor on the 65- to 75-minute outing.
Travel back in time to Chestertown’s heyday as a colonial port on the schooner Sultana, a replica of a 1768 British vessel used to enforce the tea taxes. Used primarily as an educational vessel by the Sultana Education Foundation, Sultana’s 2-hour public sails are a great way for families with children over five to enjoy an on-the-water experience that recalls the Golden Age of sail. Participants can enjoy a peek at the crew quarters below decks (also built to 18th century specifications), watch the crew climb the rigging, and maybe get a chance to haul the sails or take a turn at the helm. Kids will also get a kick out of Sultana’s small cannon, which is fired once a cruise to the delight—and surprise— of everyone on board.
Run by an independent nonprofit, the skipjack Nathan of Dorchester departs from the heart of the Cambridge waterfront on Saturday afternoons in the spring, summer and fall for 2-hour public sails. Built in 1994 as an educational vessel telling the story about the Bay’s unique oyster sailing fleet, the public cruises help get little ones into the skipjack action with a real oyster dredging demonstration. Kiddos can check out all the little crabs, mussels, barnacles, fish and oysters hauled in the dredge—and hold them if they’re feeling brave—while learning about the Bay’s amazing oyster history and ecology from the onboard docents. Parents will enjoy the Choptank River’s stunning scenery, the sailboats, workboats, and the option to BYOB onboard.
