DEAR CLUB MEMBERS:

On behalf of the Chicago Yacht Club, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all participants and fans of the 113th running of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac Presented by Wintrust. This iconic 333- mile race attracts sailors from all over the world

generation to the next. It is a Race that truly provides extraordinary opportunities for comraderies and a lifetime of memories.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Elizabeth Barrett Steven Dorfman Steven Knoop John Leahey Kurt Lentsch James Murray Scott Sims Nancy Synder Samuel Veilleux

CYC PROFESSIONAL STAFF

The Race fully returns this year after its cancellation in 2020 (for only the second time in its century old history) and following the removal of significant docking restrictions imposed on Mackinac Island in 2021, all as a result of the pandemic. The fact that the Mac is fully back only underscores the resilience and adaptability that got us through this pandemic. It is those same attributes of resilience and adaptability that are shared by all who participate in this Race and have a passion for the water. I wish all the very best in the Race, and most importantly, a safe trip to the Island. May this year be filled with many wonderful memories for all. I would also like to especially thank all who helped make this Race possible this year.

dedicated Committee members who worked tirelessly throughout the past year in efforts were part of a team that included our wonderful Race Committee and Chicago Yacht Club Staff, both on and off the water. The countless hours devoted by this team was then financially supported by all of our sponsors, including our presenting sponsor Wintrust, who has been a wonderful partner not only with respect to this event but also with the Club’s community outreach initiatives. As you will see from this edition of the Blinker, the boating season at Chicago Yacht Club is in full swing. All of our Committees and Fleets have been hard at work planning and executing a full slate of events, including numerous opportunities for members to utilize the Club to give back to the community. We also have more opportunities than ever to get out on the water, even if you do not have a boat, including, Sonars, Tom 28s, a Duffy Electric Boat, and a Power Boat together with paddle boards and kayaks. Everyone at the Club has the common bond of sharing passion for the water and we have much to celebrate this season. Nancy and I look forward to seeing you on and off the water. Stay safe.

Sincerely,

Nick Berberian Commodore, Chicago Yacht Club commodore@chicagoyachtclub.org

A LETTER FROM THE ON THE WATER DIRECTOR BY SKIP DIEBALL

WE’RE OFF TO A GREAT 2022 SEASON

As we enter the end of June, I find myself reflecting. First, I can’t believe that we are already through June. Then, I think of all the areas of the waterfront that have had so much going on that it feels like they’ve had a full season already. Nevertheless, this is the time of year where the days are long, the sun is bright and spending time on the water is what we enjoy and dream about when the snow flies. So please get out onto the water and ENJOY! I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge my gratitude for the amazing job my staff has done through an ultra-busy spring. We have accomplished so much and it is in large part to the dedication to CYC’s professional waterfront staff and volunteers. This winter we overhauled our approach to our docks. We hired Mike DiPlacido and he’s done an incredible job of recruiting fun, competent dockhands and organizing the controlled chaos around our events. With Mac Race on the horizon, the docks will be vibrant and Mike’s team will look to deliver great service at both Monroe and Belmont. Our Education staff has been busy fulfilling programs for both youth and adult. Katie Tinder has recruited an incredible youth sailing staff for our sailing school. They are already into Session 2 (of 4) and introducing more and more to the wonders of sailing and boating. Ivan Sagel has been filling all his adult education programs from power to sail. Similarly, Ivan has a great team of instructors that help deliver a quality learning environment.

On the performance side, our Head Coach Hector Guzman has been all over the USA helping our various teams perform at a high level. Singlehanded Coach, Flor Cerutti, has been on the road a bunch as well and continues to help grow our popular Opti and Laser programs. Speaking of Lasers…stay tuned for more fun as the CYC fleet gets commissioned after Mac Race. Nothing happens without the careful eye and craftsmanship of Cam Borkowski. As the fleet grows and the days fly off the calendar, Cam is always there to make sure that all of our vessels are in top shape. I can’t overstate how big of a job Cam has and how he continues to stay in front of our fleets’ needs. Our Regatta Office is really doing an outstanding job. Chuck Nevel is really benefiting from a full year of CYC activity and has done an amazing job of making sure our events are professional, fun and well run. With the Mac Race a few weeks away, the excitement for the 113th edition grows. 2022 will go down as a year of transition for the Mac Race. The very heart of our annual event is the registration and scoring systems. The Mac Committee made a difficult decision to revamp the Mac Race systems. Those that have lived through difficult implementations know that patience and communication are key. I extend my gratitude to Tom Falck, Jen Steffler and Chuck Nevel for their constant attention to the needs of the participants. The number of hours will never be calculated, but I have seen their dedication first hand. THANK YOU for your commitment to Chicago Yacht Club. ✶

She has been a Canadian National Judge for over 12 years, and chairs the Ontario Sailing Appeals Committee as well as the Sail Canada Training and Certification Committee. She is a member of the Long Term Athlete Development Committee representing officials and has served on numerous International Juries at World and North American championships. She is chair of the Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club Sailing Committee and in her spare time assesses international credentials for people wanting to immigrate to Canada.

PATRICIA O’DONNELL Pat O’Donnell is a life-long competitive sailor, starting in the Junior Sailing Program at Larchmont Yacht Club (NY). She has raced in dinghies, one-design keelboats and racer/ cruisers in team, “around the buoy” and long-distance races nationally and internationally. She still competes when she can, primarily in her home waters around Newport, RI. A US Sailing certified National Judge since 2008 and a World Sailing International Judge since 2013, she was also a US Sailing National Umpire for many years, and continues to umpire keelboat fleet races. A 20-plus year member of the Race Committee at New York Yacht Club, Pat is also a past Chair of NYYC’s Judges and Umpires Committee and is a member of the Protest Committee at Ida Lewis YC. Pat is member of Larchmont (NY) Yacht Club, New York Yacht Club, Ida Lewis YC (Newport, RI) and Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. Off the water, Patricia is a Supervisory Analyst with Morgan Stanley & Co.’s Asia Pacific Equity Research Department.

NAUTICAL EDUCATION SERIES BY ALICE MARTIN

The purpose of the Nautical Education Committee is to provide information on topics covering a wide variety of ”water” related interests. To do this, we arrange events with speakers who have expertise in those topics. A special goal was to have the events in winter and spring fill a need to think about water activities when they are not generally available. Events were held from January to June and topics included: the Chicago to Mac Race, sailboat racing, dragon remote control boating, powerboat and sailboat cruising, first aid and medical emergencies when engaging in water sports, travel adventures to areas with aquatic wonders e.g. Antartica, Great Lakes Wonders as investigated by the Shedd Aquarium, the Chicago Lighthouse status, and technology related to water activities. Most events were hybrid, that is, participants gathered at CYC Monroe or Belmont, and also could join on ZOOM.

In person, participants were given a drink and snack. There was a good mix of participants with regard to ages and interests, and interesting discussions ensued about the presentations. We are planning the next season now, so please send topics of interest to us by October, 2022. We are also looking for new members with a variety of interests to keep our program dynamic. ✶

JOIN THE FUN ON SEPTEMBER 10 FOR THE 10TH ANNUAL CHICAGO REGATTA BY GINA VARIO AND NANCY SNYDER

The Chicago Regatta, presented by Wintrust and benefitting children and youth in Chicago, is fast approaching! This annual tradition is the city’s premier celebration of the camaraderie and generosity of Chicago’s lakefront community. The Regatta again provides a fun opportunity for all boaters to contribute to the well-being of Chicago-area children while celebrating the boating community that enriches our lives. As in past years, the funds raised at the Regatta will go to the CYC Foundation, the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital, and SOS Children’s Villages Illinois. The Regatta lasts a weekend, but your impact endures.

EVERYONE CAN PARTICIPATE IN THIS FUN-FILLED FUNDRAISING EVENT! Benefactors and Sponsorships: An impactful way to join the event is to donate to help Chicago youth. You may become a family or individual benefactor by making a Medal-level donation, and Corporate sponsorships are available. Leaderboard: You can form a fundraising team on the leaderboard and compete to earn your engraving on the impressive Pinnacle trophy. Chicago Regatta: Sailboats may enter the Regatta by completing the entry form available on Yachtscoring, and by raising funds through the leaderboard, giving everyone a way to involve our friends and family in the event. There is no fee to enter the Chicago Regatta, but to be scored, participating boats must make a leaderboard donation to one of our three charitable partners. We have several different racing venues: • Chicago-Shuffle distance racing • Windy-City buoy racing • Second-City Dragon Force 65 racing Lighted Boat Show: Showcase your boat by decorating it at the dock to participate in the Light-Up-the-Club dock party. My-Kind-of-Town Party: Purchase a ticket for the My-Kind-of-Town party to enjoy the strolling Cityof-Neighborhoods dinner and music from Sons of Chicago, who delight guests with a lively mix of dance music and Chicago blues. NEW! Join the fundraising fun throughout the evening, virtually or live, by bidding in the paddle raise, wine pull and the 50/50 raffle The three recipients of our collective fundraising are some of the cornerstones of the broader Chicago community supporting the health, well-being, safety, and comfort of local children in need. The Chicago Yacht Club Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization, strives to broaden horizons

CYC POWER FLEET: THE 2022 SEASON IS IN FULL-SWING BY RANDY SCHMIDT

The Power Fleet’s on-the-water season is now underway. Our events included several Navigational Rallies, our initial Fleet Cruise to South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee, and our first Giving Back Cruise the Special Need Cruise.

SPECIAL NEEDS CRUISE It was a hot and humid day this year for the Power Fleet’s annual Special Needs Cruise. The event is organized by Loren Wolf (Noanne) and this year we hosted 120 guests from Misericordia, Helping Hand, and Good Shepherd Manor. It takes the hard work of our CYC staff and the generosity of our club members who donate their time and boats to put on this event each year. New this year was docking assistance provided by six Sea Scouts who are part of CYC’s Sea Scout Ship 5870. In light of the extreme heat, CYC’s dedicated staff came through with changes necessary to make our guests comfortable for lunch in the air conditioning of the dining room. Club members and Sea Scouts volunteered to assist our guests at lunch and during the cruise. Our flotilla of 15 boats cruised along the lakefront, past the museum campus and out on the lake with an escort provided by the Chicago Marine Police Unit. The cruise

ended with a water cannon display provided by the Chicago Marine Fireboat, Christopher Wheatly. If you ask our guests about the best part of the cruise, they will answer in their own way, THE FIRE BOAT! Watch the club calendar next season to volunteer for this very worthwhile event.

NAVIGATIONAL RALLIES With cooperation of the weather, the Power Fleet had a great start to its Navigational Rally season. The first contest - “Monroe ride along” designed by Captain Clyde Ainley (Spontaneous) - was 13 miles long and included 5 Marks. Clyde was multitasking that day: he gave a very helpful introduction about essential rules of the rallies and discussed course details, he participated as a contestant, he scored the event, and he announced the winners. The second event was held in connection with the Power Fleet’s Shakedown Cruise to Milwaukee. The course for the “Are We There Yet?” Navigational Rally was 16.7 miles and began at the Belmont Buoy and finished at Red Buoy #4 by Wilmette. Five boats started the Rally on their way to Milwaukee. Race Committee was not present and therefore participants called the Marks and used an App called TimeStamp to record the time. Those who started early in the morning had practically ideal weather: no waves, 5-10knt wind, clear visibility. But by the afternoon, the weather had changed: the wind and waves picked up, and storms blew through. As a result, some of contestants were not able to finish the course due to the weather. In the end, however, we had a great Post-Rally party the next day. Kenn and Loren Wolf did an amazing job presenting the results and awards. Nobody went home without a prize. Finally, two Rallies were planned for June 25. Unfortunately, weather allowed the

41

Blinker ✶ Summer 2022

Power Fleet to hold only one of the Rallies – the “Monroe Opener”. This course was 14.2 miles long. Although it was raining, visibility was decent and all of the participants were able to find the Marks and complete the course. We also welcomed first time Ralliers Dave and Laura Zehner. The Power Fleet has 3 more Navigational Rallies planned for July and August. Check the Club calendar for details and dates.

SHAKEDOWN FLEET CRUISE The Power Fleet’s Shakedown Cruise was held from June 10-12. Seven boats with 17 members onboard cruised from Chicago to South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee. The highlights for the weekend, organized by Ed and Carrie Falkenhayn (Lakehouse) were a Friday night buffet with DJ at South Shore Yacht Club, a potluck breakfast with champagne Saturday morning, followed by a dingy ride to Milwaukee’s Public Market for lunch and shopping, ending with a Happy Hour onboard Lakehouse. There was a little bit of rain, a full rainbow, quick dingy police encounter, and a lot of fun. The above on-the-water events are just the beginning. The Power Fleet’s schedule for the rest of the summer includes more Navigational Rallies, additional Fleet

Cruises, and more Giving Back Cruises. Plus, we have our annual End of the Season Party set for August 27. So there is still lots of time and many events for you to get involved in the activities of the Power Fleet. For more details about any of the Power Fleet’s events, please check the CYC Calendar or contact Randy Schmidt, Chair of the Power Fleet, at r-schmidt@uchicago.edu, 312-718-1995. ✶ Blinker ✶ Summer 2022

WOMEN ON THE WATER: WHAT WE DO BY NANCY BERBERIAN

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE WOMEN’S COMMITTEE? WHAT IS WOW? The Women’s Committee seeks to enhance the education and social engagement for the women of the Club. A variety of events are planned throughout the year, and each year the Women’s Committee selects a theme to focus on. This year WOW is focusing on leadership. Two leadership events were already held in the Spring. This Fall, WOW will host Vice Admiral Sandra Stosz, author of Breaking Ice & Breaking Glass. Her forty-year career is filled with leadership lessons from the first woman to command an icebreaker on the Great Lakes to leading a US armed forces service academy. Please join us on September 30 for an inspiring evening with Vice Admiral Stosz. The Women’s Committee also hosts creative events. In June, Chef Junior taught us how to roll sushi. Chef Junior demonstrated various techniques, shared his secrets and then watched over us as we rolled our own delicious sushi. Everyone passed the class and we are looking forward to advance our skills with the next lesson.

43

Blinker ✶ Summer 2022

In May, the traditional Annual Ladies Luncheon was held with a fabulous meal by Chef Larry. ASSOCIATES’ COMMITTEE BY ABBY WINKLER

The Associates’ Committee has been hard at work to bring exciting events to the club calendar! Our first event of the year was the incredible Titanic Belmont Benefit in April, which was an overwhelming success. Later that month, we hosted our Spring Wine Tasting, which featured new additions to the Monroe Station wine list, and delicious hors d’oeuvres. Both the wine and the food were thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance! Summertime Chi came right on time for our first Associates’ Raft Up in June where we had a blast cheering on the USA SailGP team at Navy Pier. If you missed out on that one, be sure to mark your calendars for the next Associate’s Raft Up in August. It’s hard to have a bad day on the water, so we hope you’ll join us! Later on in the year, we have several events planned and we hope you’ll join us. September holds the Big Kahuna, a great party at Belmont with delicious food and frosty beverages for all to enjoy. Following that is

the Oktoberfest party with German beer and live music. Finally, be sure to dig out your most outrageous holiday outfits for the Tacky Sweater Party in December. These are events you don’t want to miss! If you’re looking to get involved in any of these upcoming events, or if you’re a new member and are looking for a way to meet more people, the Associates’ Committee meetings are posted on the club calendar and are open to any and all members who want to join. We hope to see you there! ✶

CRUISING SAIL FLEET: SUMMER 2022 BY JERRY GURTHERT

Welcome to summer 2022, and the Cruising Sail Fleet (CSF) is making this one to remember. After a cold rainy early summer where most of us splashed and delivered our boats to Chicago in the chilly weather, the heat and sun are here. This is a busy time for our fleet, and I wanted to share information about previous events this summer, and other events to come this summer. We started off on Saturday, May 7th at Monroe. About thirty club members took part in a presentation “Safety at Sea for Cruising Couples.” This class was highly informative, and everyone took a little more safety home with them that afternoon. After the presentation, the fleet gathered for “Meet and Greet the Fleet” party on the deck. Although it was a little chilly, and some of us huddled under the heaters, the conversation and laughs made for a warm inviting evening. On the weekend of June 10th, we had seven boats participate in a cruise to Kenosha. Most of the fleet arrived on Friday afternoon in less-than-ideal sailing conditions, but ready to mingle, eat, and talk sailing. We enjoyed dinners on Friday and Saturday, including additional members joining by land-yacht, with good conversation and fun evenings enjoyed by all.

Upcoming events include a busy August with the Cruise to South Haven the weekend of the 5th. What better than an August weekend in South Haven! Next, the Fleet is co-sponsoring a charitable cruise on the 9th with the CYC Foundation for foster children under the care of SOS Children’s Village. “Ladies Skipper Race” is Sunday 14th. This casual event with ladies at the helm is perfect for bragging rights. Please reference the CYC website for all CSF events. On September 17th we host our final cruise of the season to New Buffalo. The Cruising Sail Fleet is dedicated to having fun on the water with fellow members who share the same sailing passions. We are always looking for new or current Chicago Yacht Club members to get involved with our fleet. Please feel free to contact Jerry Gurthet with any questions about our group, or just plan to be involved and join one of our events. ✶

OFFSHORE FLEET BY ERIC OESTERLE

Last year, James (Jim) Murray’s Callisto won the Buoy Division of the 2021 CYC Offshore Championship Series and Adam Collins’ Perspicacity won the Distance Division. The CYC Offshore Championship Series will be held this year too. It is open to both CYC Offshore Fleet and CYC Cruising Fleet members. There will be two divisions: (1) the Distance Division; and (2) the Offshore Division. Qualifying races will include the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series - Chicago (f/k/a the NOODs), the Chicago-Michigan City-Chicago night race, the Race to Mackinac, the Offshore Verve Cup, the Bi-State Regatta, the Chicago Regatta and the Sheldon Clark Regatta. A complete list of the qualifying races for each Division and of the eligibility and other requirements for this Series can be found in the Notice of Series (NoS) for this year’s Championship Series.

Prizes will be awarded, at the Offshore Fleet’s year-end celebration, in each Division to the top five finishers. The winners of each division will win the coveted blue blazers (together with patches) like the ones Jim Murray and Adam Collins won last year. It’s easy to enter (just race in qualifying events), and there’s no fee. We hope to see many of you race and qualify for awards. ✶

MY EXPERIENCE: SAILGP INSPIRE BY OLIVIA SCHMITT

As I walked over to the Inspire container at Monroe station for the first time, to say I was nervous would be an understatement. I had been thrilled when I learned I was accepted to the SailGP Waszp racing program a month ago, but as it approached, I became steadily more apprehensive. I had looked up my fellow participants and discovered they were nearly all experienced Waszp sailors and had excellent results in the high performance classes. I, on the other hand, had never sailed a foiling boat. I had plenty of experience in dinghies, but everyone I knew who had sailed a Waszp emphasized the major differences between foiling and non-foiling sailboats. I was not sure I would be able to learn fast enough to race that weekend. The first day of training, I spent a large portion of my practice time in the water, righting my boat after a capsize. The wind was heavy, which made foiling very fast but also challenging for beginners like myself. I got up on the foils a few times but crashed soon after each time. However, I learned to quickly pull in the mainsheet after capsizing and climb into the boat using the hiking strap, which helped limit my time in the water. By the end of training that day, I was able to ease and trim the mainsheet quickly enough to avoid several capsizes. I was becoming used to the changes in boat handling. I learned that using my weight to control boat heel was much less effective than sheeting in and out. I saw more improvement the next day, and could foil for longer periods of time. On Friday, the wind was light, with only some puffs in which we could foil. We practiced boat handling, and I started to feel confident in my ability to sail the boat. Saturday morning, I raced the Waszp for the first time. The conditions were excellent for foiling, with steady wind at just the right speed where I could control the boat without it being overpowered. For me, the starts were the biggest challenge. Since Waszps can travel distances very quickly, I could not just park my 47

Blinker ✶ Summer 2022

boat on the line and wait for the seconds leading up to the start. I tried starting further from the line and accelerating at different times with varying levels of success. Once the races started, I was able to sail on the foils to the first mark in the slalom course, gybe off the foils (sometimes capsizing), and start on my way to the next one. I focused on performing better each race and was happy with my improvement at the end of the day. That afternoon, we watched the F50 and Waszp gold fleet races from the water. On Sunday, there was not enough wind for us to sail, so it was really exciting to see the F50s up and foiling. We watched the awards ceremony right next to the stage and were sprayed with champagne by the Australian team. Seeing a team win at the highest level was an inspiring way to end my week in the program, and is an experience I will never forget. I feel so lucky to be included in the Inspire program. Without an experience like this, I might never have sailed a foiling boat. Thanks to our excellent coaches Ross, Aug, and Violet, I was able to learn rapidly and make progress that I am really proud of. In addition, it was great to meet driven sailors from across the US and Canada and learn from them. We also got to see behind the scenes at SailGP, and meet the accomplished sailors that we all look up to. It was especially exciting to meet Nina Curtis from the Australian team and Hannah Mills from Great Britain, and see how much these women have achieved. They were optimistic about the future of women in sailing and encouraged us to stay in the sport. All in all, the Inspire program was an experience unlike any other I have had in sailing. I am looking forward to foiling more in the future and I cannot wait to see how many others the program impacts positively. ✶

WASZP FOILING IN CHICAGO BY GRACE RENZ

The SailGP Inspire program invited 8 girls and 8 boys to learn and compete in Chicago on WASZP foiling boats this summer. The 16 sailors were chosen by resume and were between 14-20 years old. Many of the sailors were from Canada and Hawaii. There were also sailors from Maryland, Virginia and Illinois - with 1 - 5 years experience on foiling boats. This was my first time in a WASZP. My name is Grace Renz. I’ve been sailing at Chicago Yacht Club for seven years - mostly in Optis and now the ILCA Class. After five days of learning to foil with SailGP, I realized all of the different types of boats and how kids from across the country have the opportunity to sail so many different boats like Open Bics, Moths, 29ers, 49ers, WASZPs, Moths, Lasers, Optis, 420s and more. Part of the SailGP Inspire experience was going to the tech village and meeting SailGP sailors and CEOs. We got to learn about their experiences and how they made it to where they are currently. One morning all the girls

came to practice early and we went to a breakfast with a female sailor, Nina, from SailGP Australia. She spoke to us about competing as a female and what she had to go through to get to the top. We had the chance to go on the Australian Boat with the team and sit in the ‘drivers seat’ but there is actually no seat so you can see everything when racing. Meeting all the female athletes was inspiring as a young female who wants to continue to sail throughout her life and succeed. It was also very interesting to see the ways that the SailGP teams work together to make the materials better for the environment. We had a brainstorm together on ways to make sailing materials more sustainable from ropes to sails, to alternative plastics. When we were in the brainstorm, some of the Australia team members showed up on their pink scooters. They didn’t use Ubers or cars when they were in Chicago for SailGP. Since last week, I’ve gone out to practice in the Skeeta with a few of my Chicago Yacht Club team mates. The Skeeta is different than the WASZP and not used much in racing but it has been fun to practice what I’ve learned, and help others learn to foil. I hope that we will have the chance to foil more at Chicago Yacht Club and compete on WASZPs and other foiling boats on the national level. Thank you to the athletes, teams, volunteers and professionals with SailGP, Chicago Yacht Club, Rooster and WASZP for bringing more foiling to Chicago. ✶ Blinker ✶ Summer 2022

CYC SEASCOUTS MAIL CALL BY MARK CORTER

It’s been a fun year since Sea Scouts restarted at the CYC last summer. Let’s try to see if we can recap the year.

49

The program was reorganized in June of 2021. We started with eight Scouts. They came over from another ship, plus a few brand new Scouts. The first goal was to get organized and come up with an action plan for the year. We came up with several activities and concentrated on

The excitement for the program was starting to build. The Scouts ended the sailing season with a fall camp out at Warren dunes. The next meeting, we discussed what we could do to help with the Christmas tree ship. We found that Captain Schuenemann’s grave marker was at Acadia cemetery near Schiller Park. We went out to the grave site and offered our respects and had a small ceremony in honor of Captain Schuenemann.

uniforms for the Scouts so they can be more recognized at the yacht club. The adult leadership was secured and support for the program started to grow. The Scouts continued to use the Chicago council’s sailboat “Reflections’’ and the small red whaler. They also went out sailing on the Skipper’s boat “Maris” and helped with a Mac back delivery last summer on Lloyd Karen’s “Taipan”. The Scouts used the red whaler in the Chicago Regatta boat parade, decorated it with lights and some fairly large flags. That was probably the first time that the club was exposed to the Scouts on a larger scale. They also helped with docking several of the members’ boats that day and made pretty good first impressions.

During the winter months there wasn’t much to do on the water so the Scouts helped with swim classes, teaching other Scouts how to swim. They also visited the National Museum of the American Sailor at Great Lakes Naval Base. That’s where they learned all about tattoos for sailors and their meanings. We had a few questions to answer from the parents after that trip, especially what the pig and rooster meant on the tops of feet. A few of the Scouts wanted to head to North Chicago to get some tattoos, we’ll have to plan that trip for another day.

Blinker ✶ Summer 2022

Scouts helped with offloading the trees and had a great time, they even met Lee Murdock.

Once spring started to come around, the excitement of the summer season started to build, along with all the chores needed to be done for spring commissioning of the council boats. We added several new Scouts to the list of our growing ship. We are at 14 now. The new uniforms were almost complete and winter was starting to let go. The Scouts attended a Storm Trysail Foundation “Safety at Sea” class with their new uniforms which started to draw some attention to the ship. Their first and formal debut with their new uniforms was at the Children’s Museum at Navy Pier. Greg Miarecki, past commodore, invited the Scouts to assist the guests and donors of the exhibit “Boats, be your own captain”. Afterwards, at the after party, the Scouts were introduced to the members of the Foundation. They were received with a very warm welcome, especially our newest and youngest member Stella. Excitement for the ship continues to grow as the Scouts assisted with the Memorial Day ceremony at Monroe station. They looked great and represented the club very well. When a couple of 914 RC boats were completed, the Scouts started to practice with them at Belmont Harbor. Then after a long wet cold spring, the Scouts were finally able to prepare Reflections and sail her north for the summer season to Belmont Harbor. We had a nice SWW wind and sailed her up at 7 knots, which isn’t too bad for a 1984 blue water cruiser with 30 year old sails and a 9000 lb keel and displacement of 28000 lbs. They were met with waves and thank you’s from some of the foundation members who recognized them when they arrived at the harbor. Since the older Scouts have sailed mostly big boats and offshore, they thought it would be fun to try their

hand at some 420s. We met at Belmont Station on a Friday evening where Andy taught them how to rig the boats. They really had a lot of fun capsizing the boats too. There wasn’t much wind the day they were in the 420s but that didn’t stop them from having a blast. The boats were capsized more than they were sailed that evening. The Scouts were also very involved, most recently, with SailGP. Grant Crowley assisted with some “pit lane” passes where the Scouts assisted with a group of high school kids from Chicago Maritime Arts Center and got to see the support area where the boats are kept and assembled. Plus, two of our oldest Scouts assisted as a “marshall boat” for 3 days on the council’s whaler. They spent most of the days chasing down boats that drifted into or entered the exclusion zone. They put about 5-6 hours a day on the whaler dealing with everything the lake threw at them including the boaters that didn’t want to be told what to do. Through all of it they smiled and it was a great experience. They represented the club very well, everyone should be proud of these Scouts. There are several events scheduled for the rest of the summer including helping out “The Special Needs Cruise”, fleet review and helping with the “Race to the Mac”. The Scouts are also sailing or power boating at least once a week. When you see them out on the water wave and smile and they’ll always wave back. ✶

CHICAGO YACHT CLUB FOUNDATION BY MEGAN MCNICHOLS MAHON

Margo Cicero was just 11 years old when her parents signed her up for a summer sailing camp that changed the course of her young life. It turns out Margo was a natural on the water and she fell in love with the sport. “I love sailing,” she said. “I love being on the water – it’s the best part of my life.” By the time Margo entered high school, her passion for sailing influenced her thinking about careers. “Why can’t I be on the water as a job?” she thought. Now 18, the 2022 graduate of Chicago’s Whitney Young High School is headed to the US Naval Academy to study nuclear engineering with plans to become a submarine officer. She’ll also sail for the Navy intercollegiate varsity team. A recipient of sailing scholarships from the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation throughout high school, Margo didn’t just sail for Whitney Young, she started the high school team. “I emailed the principal the summer before my freshman year about starting a sailing team,” she said. The principal approved her proposal, and that fall

20 students signed up for the inaugural Whitney Young sailing team. Beyond shaping her college and career plans, Margo’s high school sailing career brought her new friendships and many life lessons; she points to adaptability as the most important life skill she learned from sailing. “There are so many variables in sailing. You can’t predict the shifts in the wind or when a wave will push your bow down,” she said. “You have to read it and react -- and make the right decision in that very moment. That’s been very applicable in my own life.” Margo is among the more than 30 Chicago area teenagers to receive a sailing scholarship from the CYC Foundation in the past two years. “Margo is a great example of the kind of student-athlete the Foundation is committed to supporting,” said Matt Gallagher, chairman of the Grants and Scholarships Committee. “We can’t wait to see what the future holds for her at the Naval Academy and beyond.” Grants and scholarships are just one way that the CYC Foundation supports the Chicagoland community. CYC BUILDS MOMENTUM FOR INTERCLUB COMPETITION BY BRIDGET GROBLE

The Chicago Yacht Club team’s fourth-place finish at the prestigious Seawanhaka International Challenge Cup against a field of elite global competitors shows the promise of a revitalized interclub racing program at Chicago Yacht Club. The CYC team of Alex Curtiss, Gordon Lamphere, Raymond Groble IV, Graham Eger, Bridget Groble, and William Curtiss sailed together for the first time at the event and revealed the quality of our club’s sailing and racing. Our sailors consistently improved boat handling

While CYC has participated intermittently in a number of these challenges over the years, we have never had a formalized Challenge Program as do peers such as the St. Francis Yacht Club, Annapolis Yacht Club and New York Yacht Club. An InterClub Competition Committee led by Past Commodore Leif Sigmond is working to change that and the club is developing sailors and teams for this season and coming years. Please help us understand your interest in this developing area of member participation with a survey. ✶

Our competitors reported the host club to be hospitable and welcoming and the team built friendships with their regatta hosts and race competitors over the two formal dinners and two casual evenings at the club.
