change. Nearly 2500 carloads of cattle shipped through the beautiful forks during peak season, making it, at that time, the world’s largest livestock shipping point. It became an agriculture center in the TriState area of South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming, and it remains so today. This little “big” town still serves a large trade area with wool, cattle, sheep, and bentonite industries as the mainstay. It is considered the gateway to the northern Black Hills. Any traveler coming north from Canada or from various points to the south, will most likely travel on Trans-Canada Highway 85 right past the Tri-State Museum and Visitor Center and the “Buckskin” Johnny Spaulding Cabin. A quick detour to the museum can quickly become an all-day excursion. The museum, originally at another location on State Street, along with the historic cabin, was started in 1955 with a donation from Mrs. Roy Williams, to accommodate his substantial western collection. Once it was moved to the new location along Highway 85, it continued to grow and now houses a complex buildContinued on next page...

The little town at the beautiful forks, aka Belle Fourche, South Dakota, has a big reputation. That reputation comes from its rich history as a wellknown fur-trading rendezvous point, and farmers and ranchers settling in the fertile valleys, growing food for the miners who came with the gold rush of 1876. It also holds a big reputation as huge herds of Texas and Kansas cattle were driven to the area, and it was a way station for the stagecoach line established by Theodore Roosevelt, running between Medora, North Dakota and Deadwood. And it’s claim to real fame comes from its location as the geographic center of the United States. This center of the nation designation was made in 1959 with the admission of Alaska and Hawaii. Seth Bullock, a Canadian-American frontiersman, who was a wellknown politician, sheriff, and U.S. Marshal, was instrumental in founding the city after he came to the Black Hills to sell supplies in Deadwood. When the railroad came to the area, he offered free rightof-way to build the terminal, located near present-day Belle Fourche Livestock Ex-

Beginning at Highways 85 and 212 intersection in Belle Fourche, the Warrior Trail weaves westward from The Center of the Nation. At the Tri -State Museum in Belle Fourche, SD the trail forges its path to the corner of Wyoming into Montana for two hundred miles. Ending at the intersection of Interstate 90, travelers will find themselves adjacent to The Little Bighorn Battlefield, commonly known as Custer’s Last Stand.

The struggles begin centuries ago between 1865 and 1877. Native American people of the region desperately tried to protect their land and culture from multiple threats. The Crow were pressed out of western South Dakota by the rival Sioux, who relocated from Minnesota and eastern South Dakota due to their own displacement from U.S. military forces.

ing of ever-changing displays. It documents the rich history of the town of Belle Fourche and the surrounding Tri-State area. Tipperary, the legendary bucking horse, brought many to the area, and to the Black Hills Roundup which was started as a war effort in 1918. The July 4th weekend draws a considerable crowd to the area and the museum supports the continuation of the documentation of that event. The museum tells tales and truth about such local historical events as the Great Butte County Bank Robbery, the Sundance Kid and the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang. A large military section leads visitors from the Civil War, through World War II and highlights the Doolittle Raiders. The Spaulding Cabin, located next to the museum, takes the visitor back in history to a time when Spaulding, his sister, brother-in-law, and their six children lived in the hand-hewn log two-story home. The cabin was donated to the museum by the W.A. Helmer family and the Belle Fourche Lions Club provided the renovations. Anyone who wanders through the small, cramped rooms, will wonder at how a family survived the conditions. Learn more about the Tri-State Museum & Visitor Center on page 21.

Inter-tribal strife and territorial battles only compounded as U.S. Army soldiers enforced an edict from Washington, D.C. From Belle Fourche, through Colony, Wyoming, Alzada, Hammond, Boyes, Broadus, Ashland, Lame Deer, Busby and Crow Agency, the people live in the history soaked land on the Warrior Trail. The people are as rich and diverse as the communities and areas they live in! The one common denominator is the “Warrior” that thrives in each of them as a tribe, a community, a business, a ranch or as an individual. “The United States produces about 25 million pounds of wool a year. And through our doors, we’ll market between 4 and a half and 5 million pounds. So, we’re handling roughly 20% of the wool produced in the United States. What draws you to this industry is the producers themselves. They work hard. They take all of the risks of weather, markets, predators -- all of the issues they face every day. It’s a privilege, I think, to have the responsibility to market their products.” - Larry Prager, CEO • Center of the Nation Wool, Inc.

with The

Tri-State Museum If the brief glimpse of our story has piqued your interest, stay with us for a few days and dive deeper into our area’s pioneer history and lore. The Tri-State Museum is full of knowledge and tales illustrated with the West’s priceless artifacts and an illustrated photo history. Admission is always free; it is also home to a wide area of complimentary travel resources, friendly staff, and interactive activities for the whole family to enjoy. Take a break for lunch and picnic at the Center of The Nation Monument, located just a few steps away from the museum entrance. Belle Fourche, South Dakota, holds the distinction of being “The Center of the Nation.” When Hawaii was admitted to the Union in 1959, its landmass – added to the landmass of the continental U.S. – shifted the geographic center of the 50 states to latitude 44 degrees, 58’N, longitude 103 degrees 46’W, which is approximately 20 miles north of Belle Fourche. This actual geographic center is marked with a small metal survey marker and a flag. It is on private land, though it is generally accessible. If you are interested in making the trek, stop in and ask for old-fashioned directions from a staff member (GPS isn’t always the most reliable tool on the prairie). Local artist Monte Amende created the brilliant rose-shaped monument. It’s formed with South Dakota granite, surrounded by “The Avenue of Flags,” and an impressive 21 feet across; it’s the perfect spot to pose for a memorable photo. In August, if you are traveling through on your way to Sturgis or Alzada, check for details to have a photo with your bike on the actual monument, the perfect souvenir for the 82nd Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

This summer Bill Hennessey - Belle Fourche resident, and Dawn Newland - a rancher, artist, and authoress, will walk and talk on Historic State Street. Bill and Dawn are passionate about western history and are two of the best storytellers, captivating listeners from the beginning. Bill and Dawn’s stories of cattle drives, horse thieving, bank robberies, love stories, gunfights, and Presidential visits, will revive well-known characters, such a Calamity Jane. Bill and Dawn’s combined knowledge, spanning over decades of personal research, they draw a colorful picture with stories of ‘Old Downtown Belle Fourche’ on State Street.

The events have changed over the last 100 years, but the cowboy tradition of rodeo has stayed the same. The Black Hills Roundup is one of the oldest outdoor rodeos in the United States. Every July, locals, tourists, and professional rodeo athletes head to Belle Fourche to carry on and celebrate the tradition of what it means to be “cowboy.” The grandstand is filled with folks from all over this country, and you will even meet a few with their passport stamped to attend. The energy in Belle Fourche during the Roundup will make you feel a sense of pride about the rural roots of our area regardless of where you’re from. You will be at high risk for catching the “western spirit.”

The replica is part of a traveling exhibition called A Call to Honor: Tomb of The Unknown Soldier. The Americanism Committee of the Exchange Club in Rome, Georgia, is responsible for the exhibition and brings the replica to all parts of the United States. It was constructed by Phillip Burkhalter Builders of Rome in 2015.

It is the hope of the Exchange Club of Rome and the National Exchange Club that the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform are never forgotten, for without their supreme sacrifice of their lives, and in the case of the unknowns, their identity, our way of life would not be possible.

TOMB

The tomb is an exact half size of the actual Tomb at Arlington. All of the artwork was carved with a hand Dremel and it was painted to resemble the marble of the real one at Arlington National Cemetery by Mr. Chuck Schmult, a wellknown and extremely talented Rome, Georgia artist.

AT THE

Way back in the 1934 a group of crazy people wanted to hit some golf balls around a field. That group of people got approval to use a swampy piece of land at the intersection of Highways 85 and 34. With little money to move earth, the group decided to route the golf course in

and areas that would disturb the natural landscape as little as possible. They plotted out 9 circles of sand and called it a golf course. For almost 90 years golf has been played on the beautiful land in which Belle Fourche Country Club rests.

The course does not have a bunch of tall grass everywhere, you won’t be searching for golf balls all day, it is the type of course that you can use one ball for you whole round. We hope to see you at Belle Fourche Country Club during the 2022 golf season.

Local residents enjoy the beauty of all four seasons at an elevation of 3,022 ft. In true South Dakota fashion, the seasons can sometimes occur all in one day.
