Movie Review Ron Galella’s Smash His Camera Director: Leon Gast Producer: Adam Schlesinger, Linda Saffire Genre: Documentary Cinematographer: Don Lenzer Music Director: Craig Hazen, David Wolfert Running Time: 87 min In Theatres: 30 July 2010 (USA) Language: English
About Ron Galella Paparazzi Ron Galella explicitly snapped celebrity photos, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. A kind of intense search that made him land in the court twice. He is known around the world as one of the most famous and controversial celebrity photographers. Over the last 50 years, Ron Galella has compiled a collection of candid celebrity pictures that are as remarkable as any mainstream media outlet. As one of the country’s leading photographers, he chased celebrities like a shadow, taking photos of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, and the Hordes at Studio 54. Many journalists believed that he was nothing more than a “parasite” and a “bottom feeder”. His photographs are presented in museums and galleries around the world. Along with this, the New York Times awarded his book, ‘Disco Years’, as the Best Photography Book for the year 2006. Not only does the documentary demonstrate how he came into the business, but his work is often compared with his personal life. With his intense transitions towards recalling his glory days of photographing “real” stars like Robert Redford, Steve McQueen, and Katherine Hepburn he termed it as “Smash His Camera”. About Documentary “Smash His Camera” was named after an order that was given by Onassis to a Secret Service specialist after Galella jumped out from behind the bush and began snapping her with John F. Kennedy Jr. The documentary is one of the greatest examples that teach how a story can shed light on some of the big questions of the era. This enthusiastic photographer shares stories and memories of his encounters with stars such as Bridget Bardot, Robert Redford, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, and many more. There is no match for Galella’s obsession with Jackie Onassis, which lasted from 1967 until she died in 1994. His most prominent shot is “Windblown Jackie” taken in 1974, which the photographer calls his own special
‘‘The Official Cover of The Film’’
“Mona Lisa.” The documentary is still remembered for his long court battle with Jackie Onassis. This single incident was so overpowering. However, he interjects storylines that eventually balance this moment of power. The film addresses the legal, ethical, and aesthetic issues of Galella’s business and asks if anyone has the right to photograph anyone. Along with the right to invade the privacy of celebrities. Yet, amid all of this controversy, Galella’s spectacular shots remain to be the true highlights. It is hard to deny the deepness of his photographs, which include some famous celebrities of his time. You are obliged to admire his creativity, while some of his critics call Galella “money-grubbing.” Towards the end of the documentary, we see a young girl gazing at the pictures of Galella in the gallery. She does not identify his subjects. As per the director, this would be the biggest legacy of Galella providing us with an unforgettable glimpse of the American royalty. Overall, “Smash His Camera” may not be a groundbreaking documentary, but it lovingly reflects Ron Galella’s heartfelt commitment to his celebrity subjects as well as the epic frustration that the celebrities felt towards him.

Seeking Guidance When Seeking Guidance, the Answers Must Always Come From Above.
FACES & RACES By Zubin Balaporia
The idea behind a great photograph is that it must tell a story. Technique and skill are secondary. First, one has to spot and capture a moment and that moment must “speak” to the viewer. Zubin iterated, “For me, interesting faces & races immediately tell a story.” By traveling around the world, he enjoys meeting, talking and photographing “real” people, those who are not famous or well known. They may not be high achievers or famous personalities, but through their faces, they display character and always have nicer and interesting stories to tell. So, it all started at the ripe old age of 45, when Zubin was on a trip in Germany with his friend, Subir Chatterjee, who is a brilliant photographer and professional film maker. While watching Subir photographing, it struck him as to how much his skill, technique and knowledge impacted his photography. This began to arouse a mild curiosity in Zubin and before long he was shooting wildly on an iPhone 4. Being an adventurous traveller, his next trip was a solo expedition to the Amazon. Then, he began to learn, read and study photography with a new Sony Rx-100 Mk II. Post the Amazon trip, he decided to get himself a better camera, therefore, he bought a Nikon D810 and a Nikkor 24-70mm lens. In 2016, he began to professionally print his photographs and the idea to do an exhibition was born. His first exhibition in 2018 was called “Blessed by the Light” and a few more have followed. This amazing series, titled “Faces and Races” is something Zubin wanted to do for quite a while. He added, “To document honest people in their natural surroundings and tell a story is all I want the observer to embrace. Hopefully through my photographs, the viewer will find himself or herself, teleported to the very places, faces and races that I have had the pleasure of visiting and photographing.” Zubin’s tryst with photography started very late in life. By profession he has and always will be a musician. But to him, music and photography are like two long lost siblings. Composing, arranging and producing good music is akin to composing and taking a great photograph. According to him, “Though music will always be my first passion – photography is becoming a very close second and these days I find myself working more on my photographs than my music.” 27 FEATURE
Zubin Balaporia has performed as a Keyboardist for over 30 years. He is a full-time founding member of the cult Indian Rock band INDUS CREED. Touring the world has given him the opportunity to visit many strange towns which have fuelled a wanderlust. Through the lens and his photographic prints, he would like his pictures to teleport viewers to the very places & faces that he himself has visited. www.zubinbalaporiaphotography.com zubinbalaporia

Book Review The Weekend Photographer: John Van Put (2012) The Weekend Photographer by John Van Put was published in the year 2012 by New Holland Publishers Australia. The author states clearly that he is not a professional photographer, although it might provide a distinction without a difference. In the introduction part of the book, the author confirms photography as an essential part of his life. It’s one of the greatest forms of escapes from the day-to-day activities of his everyday job. The author is a weekend photographer who states that he is his own critic. The manner in which the work is conducted or considered is not commanded by anyone else. Eventually, this can become a significant source of income for someone else’s expectation, but the author would lose the very basic principle for what he currently enjoys doing. At the outset, John Van Put makes it clear of him not being a professional photographer or a profession he wished to pursue on a full-time basis. As the name suggests, he enjoys capturing photographs on weekends unless he is on a prolonged holiday. Along with this, he captures photos for himself just for the fun of it and that is what the author wants to aim at all its readers. John Van Put had an eye for the dramatic shots. Most of his photos are taken while he is traveling abroad in Washington DC, Florence, Rome, New York, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, Paris, Niagara Falls, and Baltimore. Luckily, he was one of the greatest fortunes of living in an area equipped with world-class photographers. None other than Sydney. According to the author, the environments of Sydney are one of the significant subjects that contribute to most of his photos in the book.
The book, in general, focuses on how the dramatic shots were captured and involved brief information about the postprocessing tasks. A dramatic shot cannot be clicked simply just by going outside, processing software, High Dynamic Range photography is some of the essential requirements to capture such images. However, it seems that there is a significant omission on the part of the image-making process. Indeed, considered as an integral part of how these images were made. John Van Put has made sure to include minimum text possible. Wherever the text is, it focuses on how the photographer approached the challenges of capturing in that particular location. However, the text might not provide you with any detail that may enhance your own shooting.
The book is thematically organized into various chapters that focus on Seascapes, Night Landscapes, High Definition Range, Nature, Monochrome, Storms, and Sunsets.
The Weekend Photographer by John Van Put (2012) is kind of a book that may or may not be liked by every type of photographer, but it focuses on plenty of examples of capturing in dramatic locations, especially on weekends. The book also provides you with some insights into the decisions that went into every photograph.
The book provides a nice gist of all the captured photographs by him that helps the reader with all the shooting information in it. Most of them just have exposure settings. He has used relatively expensive and high-end gears for capturing marvellous photos. For example, the Canon EOS 5D Mark ll.
Last but not least, depending upon your photographic taste, almost all the images are heavily processed mainly with the usage of High Definition Range. For sure, it may offer a person with a positive or a negative side towards the same.

Old is Gold Dead Troops Talk - 1992 A lot of people have showcased emotional responses towards this photograph. Opinions ranging from positives to negatives in an area of newfound transcendence. Along with this, if we consider a strange paradox, the troops appear to be connected through their interpersonal relations and compound their own actions showcasing their historical meaning.
Dead Troops Talk by Jeff Wall Is definitely considered to be one of the most important photographs that show case the originality of old is always gold. Jeff Wall is one of the most important and crucial parts of the emerging photographers to be successful in the last several years in the field of artists working and living in the Canadian region. He started to pick up his career in a small, however, is a devoted community that involved conceptual artists in the capital city of Canada i.e Vancouver. He is very well credited and recognized worldwide for expanding the scope and territory of contemporary photography. Jeff Wall usually ideates the photographs that capture and showcase moments of various conceptual and resolving strategies, strange resonance, that vary in the current technologically advanced modern world. Certainly having a focus on history and literature.
The above picture depicts a hallucinatory scene in which the soldiers seem to be reanimated and engaging with each other that may have just been killed on the battlefield. The “Dialogue of The Dead” is what the artist wants to describe to this photograph in general. Moreover, these troops are considered to be from a soviet patrol that led to an ambush in Afghanistan during the ongoing wars over occupation in the year 1980. There are several varieties of responses to the experience of free animation and death. a note of macabre levity is showcased by 3 of the soldiers clowning down in their own wounds. Jeff Wall suggests black humor as one of the possible reactions to such kinds of circumstances that involved distressed responses of their comrades. Definitely, with all due respect, the photographer has carefully constructed a beautiful and marvelous piece of painting. Although the work was done in a temporarily staged gigantic studio, the photograph is actually staged involving live performers, customized costumes, make-up professionals, and a little bit of special effects. The final image is the result of several other small parts compiled and assembled with the help of a digital montage.
One of the most subtle usages of his historical painting journey is to reflect upon the theoretical climate of the artistic world. Some of the most subtextual layers that the photographer interests in going deeper, involve the critics of the gaze, the naturalistic representation, and the current economic market. Critiques of the gaze, the nature of representation for the market economy are present in his work. These subtextual layers invite the photographer to go deeper into his research. He is recognized worldwide to create staged transparencies that have emerged massively in the last 30 years. However, talking about this prestigious photograph captured by Jeff Wall in the year 1992. The photograph depicts an intricate fictional scene resembling the scenario from a Zombie Horror film in a war zone. The photograph has also been staged providing insight on the integral parts of soldiers coming back to life on an ongoing battlefield. Nishad Kinhikar nishad@chiiz.com

A MOMENT IN TIME
In early 1960s, in the mystical world of a tribe in the far East, it was believed there existed humans who could transform into status for 12 hours a day, and back to humans the remaining 12 hours. The tribe, having unknown name, was branded by the community as “MWANGA”, whose inspiration came from the gold and silver color the human statues were mostly dressed in. In the same time there existed a premium luggage brand, known to many as Yalloleather, who decided to reach out to collaborate, when they heard the buzz about the human statues. The results of this collaboration are what we are able to see in this series themed, ‘A MOMENT IN TIME.’
