Silhouette, one of the most widespread words that are hard to enunciate. Well, in Indian English, it is pronounced as “si-low-et”, in British: “si-loo-et”, and in American: “si-luhwet”. It is characterized as the image of a person, animal, object, or a scene, exemplified as a solid shape of a single color—the horizons of a silhouette mix with the subject itself. Featureless interiors are the significant representation of a silhouette. It is usually referred to as a universal sub-genre that easily fits with every category. In photography, a silhouette can be combined with any genre to make an image more appealing. Boudoir, fashion, wildlife, and fine-art, all these genres conglomerates with Silhouettes. This issue is unique to itself in terms of featuring photographs, with featureless interiors. A picture is always defined by its interior features and infinite information, but in Silhouette, a conscious imagination is all one needs to understand the interiors of an image. In this majestic issue of Chiiz Photography Magazine, we are exhibiting our efforts under the “Silhouette” theme. Our lovely readers will witness a fantastic art in our magazine’s feature section, where we are featuring a tremendous silhouette photographer, John Marshall, from United States. In addition to John, we have Subhash Nair, a wildlife photographer from Kerala, India, with his mesmerizing silhouette images of wildlife. Silhouette is just like the heart. One needs imagination to understand things, a feeling to embrace the essence of life, just like Nikodemus from Indonesia did in his picturesque shots of streetsilhouette. With this much enthusiasm, we are featuring a Filipino, Martin Zapanta, who has enthralled us with his underwater fashion silhouette photographs. Although, this time, we are showcasing more than fifty photographers in our “Chiiz Gallery” section with their impressive images of numerous genres. This month, in our “Old is Gold” column, our reputed writer, Maushi Journal is featuring a fantastic golden photographer Thomas Annan with some of the best images out of his collection of thirtyfive images. The article is a roller coaster guide, but backward, to 1868-1871, featuring “The Old Closes and Street of Glasgow.” In addition to this, we are featuring “Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens” to enlighten our readers with an astonishing documentary on one of the great photographers, Annie Leibovitz, directed and produced by her cousin, Barbara Leibovitz. We are assuring our readers that they will be engaging hypnotically with this unique issue. The volume is peculiar to itself in a way as it shows a universal category of photography that will open one’s brain with so many intuitive ideas to understand Silhouette deeply. People usually interpret it as an easy genre, but this volume is ready to enlighten people with so many beautiful ideas. Fine-Art, wildlife, portraits, underwater, street, conceptual, travel, macro, and many more genres are here to entertain you artistically. So, swoop into the magazine comprising heartful efforts by our team and providing the best guide into the world of Silhouette photography in a manner that no one has ever illustrated and hence, frolic the photographs.

BULL JUMPING CEREMONY HAMAR TRIBE | ETHIOPIA

Ilia Chakiashvili He is a travel photographer from Washington DC. “I love traveling offbeaten path, meeting people, sharing meals with them, and snapping a few photos to capture a glimpse of their culture and everyday life. That’s my passion.”, he emphasized gracefully.

In Tumri, a village in southwestern Ethiopia famous for its open-air market, Ilia Chakiashvili was roaming around to witness a weekly goods exchange market between the Hamar and other neighboring tribes. The vendors began to set up their booths, so he sat in a small coffee shop nearby to enjoy a strong local Ethiopian coffee. After some time, a young man of the Hamar Tribe (Solomon) approached his table with a cup of coffee in hand and asked if he could join him. Solomon told Ilia about a local ceremony called bulljumping, which would be taking place that evening. He explained that this was a unique rite-of-passage tradition practiced only by the Hamar people. It was the initiation ritual for a boy making the transition to manhood, and it would grant the young man the right to choose a wife and start his own family. In eager anticipation, Ilia walked with Solomon up and over a small hill. At the bottom of a hill, there was a group of around seventy people gathered. Some of the men were drinking beer and laughing. A group of ten women was dancing in a circle. Some men wore shorts and t-shirts that looked like they could have come straight from a department store in the United States, while others were shirtless. Below the waist, they wore material wrapped and tied like short skirts. Many had around their necks colorful beaded necklaces, and multiple metal bracelets around their upper arms. On their feet they wore sandals. The women were more ornately dressed in long goatskin skirts and aprons that left their backs bare. Most of the aprons covered the woman’s breasts, but others did not. The women’s clothes were decorated with glass beads and white shells. Their hair was tightly braided and smeared with a mixture of ochre and oil. They also wore many earrings and necklaces strung with snail shells and glass beads, and metal bracelets on their arms. Some women wore very distinctive collars made from metal and leather, called “Burkule.” This is carried by a woman who is the first wife of a man.

A young man was sitting on the ground surrounded by a group of male onlookers, one of whom was painting his face with red ochre. There was a middle-aged man who caught my attention for longer. He was Mother and Daugther Canon EOS 5D Mark III 105mm F/6.3 1/8000 ISO1250

wearing a dark blue jacket and striped pants. He carried an AK-47 machine gun in one hand and a small chair in the other, and had a bullet belt around his hips. He was the father of that young man. Suddenly a woman left the dancing circle and stood in front of a shirtless man who was carrying a stick. She blew a horn at him, obviously to call his attention. The man lifted the stick and swiftly struck the woman on her back. One can clearly saw blood rushing from the newly formed wound, but the woman didn’t flinch. “That is part of the ritual,” Solomon said. “The men are called Maza. They have already gone through the bull-jumping ceremony and will hold the bulls during the actual jumping ritual.“ Ilia emphasized, “But why would a woman volunteer be whipped and suffer such pain, not to mention, carry a permanent scar for the rest of her life? I was still reeling from what I had just witnessed.”

After an hour or so, the Mazas began to gather the bulls together. There was that boy finally. He was totally naked, standing and patiently waiting to run over the backs of the bulls. The Mazas brought the bulls to an open field and lined them up side by side. Everyone started shouting and yelling to encourage the boy. After he started running, he jumped on the back of the first bull and ran across all of them, his feet alternating from one bull’s back to the next. Once he made it to the other side, he turned around and did the same thing in the opposite direction. He did this the requisite three times with a smile on his face. The bull-jumping was over; he had earned his manhood. The people slowly dispersed.

Jumping Bulls Canon EOS 5D Mark III 24mm F/8 1/125 ISO100

“It’s an honor and a sign of loyalty to the boy,” Solomon said to Ilia, “Once a Maza has whipped a woman, she knows she can always turn to him for help if she needs it. He owes that to her now. Look at all the women, and you’ll see that they all have scars.” One can quickly notice that the aprons of women were designed to expose the bare women’s backs scarred from past whippings. As time passed, a woman blew a horn to taunt a Maza and get whipped on her back. The mix of blood and sweat was everywhere. While one woman got beaten, the others watched, eagerly waiting to be the next. The dancing itself never stopped, and after a woman got whipped, she would go back to the circle and keep dancing, badly bleeding down her back.

“I can no longer watch this; I need to go,” Ilia told Solomon. “Let’s go and wait behind that tree. The actual bull-jumping should start soon.”, Solomon told Ilia excitedly.

Old is Gold The Old Closes and Streets of Glasgow

T

homas Annan, a Scottish photographer of Dairsie, Fife, significantly the first person to record the adverse housing conditions of the poor.

in the city’s East. Glasgow was once a wealthy area housing tobacco and fish–curing merchants, by the 1840s it was severely overcrowded.

He started his apprenticeship at the Fife Herald in Cupar as a lithographic writer. Then, he moved to Glasgow in 1849, where he worked as a lithographer and engraver for Joseph Swan until 1855. In 1855, he photographed the ship RMS Persia, under construction on the Clyde, which was probably commissioned by engineer Robert Napier. He established himself in a photographic studio at 116 Sauchiehall Street in 1857. After this, he was also able to establish a printing works in Hamilton in 1863. First interested largely in architectural photography and then portraits, as well as photographing artworks and maps, in 1866, Annan photographed slum areas of the city. These images were used by Glasgow City Improvement Trust to document the overcrowded, unhygienic conditions ahead of extensive redevelopments. This series of photographs, created between 1868 and 1871, entitled Old Closes and Streets of Glasgow, ensured his prosperity. The Old Closes and Streets of Glasgow Annan is however, best known for The Old Closes and Streets of Glasgow. In 1866, The Glasgow City Improvement Trust commissioned him to record ‘Old Glasgow’ before much of it was demolished. In total, there are three editions of the work: • Albumen prints (1871, with photographs made between 1867–71) • Carbon prints (1878, with photographs made between 1868–1877) • Photogravures (1900, with photographs made 1868– 1899 ) There are approximately 35 images he made of the streets, wynds, and closes of ‘old’ Glasgow around Glasgow Cross

Most of Annan’s images show the emptied closes and wynd, with a few people, or an occasional group pressed in between walls. This is partly because of the technical limitations of early photography. Long exposure times were required, and some of the images would have taken minutes. It was, therefore, difficult to photograph the living as movement produced disturbing ‘ghost’ images, as we can see clearly in some of the images here. These photographs were also made in the period before ‘pan’ flashlight (1887). Insufficient light made it impossible to photograph dark or dimly lit interiors of their dwellings. In these urban images, we therefore only see people out of doors, on the streets. The overall effect of Annan’s images is an immense thoughtful collection with a penetrating view. Loneliness, stillness, and isolation are the three key elements that are shown artistically in Annan’s images. One contemporary local writer exploring the areas of ‘old’ Glasgow in 1858 was blunt: “The landed aristocracy were permitted, just as now, to effect clearings – systematically starve and punish by tyranny, a peasantry with a right equal with their own to live by the soil”. A photographer with that much thought process and courage to let go of oneself into the grounds and collect the photographs is tough to understand. Thomas Annan died on 14 December 1887 at his home in Lenzie. Before his death by suicide, he had experienced a month-long period of “mental aberration”.

Movie Review Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens Director: Barbara Leibovitz Genre: Documentary, Musical and Performing Arts Running Time: 79 min In Theatres: Jan 03, 2007 Language: English

“Why is Annie Leibovitz, one of the great photographers?” This question stagnates to an end after the release of the ‘Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens’ documentary by Barbara Leibovitz.

L

ife Through a Lens is an outstanding documentary into the successful career of Leibovitz. Photographers around the globe, of any genre/category, will be interested to see her progression as an artist and how she has made history through her photographs. Leibovitz has led an incredible photographic journey, from her time spent documenting the world of music at Rolling Stone Magazine, to her portraiture at Vanity Fair and Vogue. Behind the scenes looks, interviews with well-known personalities, as well as discussion of many of her most famous photographs, and a lot more are served on the plate by the documentary. Through this documentary, Leibovitz not only taught Americans how to look at celebrities but stuck in the ineffable views of the Sarajevo and Rwanda massacres. She alone sculpted the perspective of the public of such notables as Mick Jagger, Whoopi Goldberg, Demi Moore, Patti Smith, Hillary Rodham Clinton and dozens of others, that led to those massacres. The documentary describes a fantastic understanding of photography done by Annie Leibovitz. Her perspective on capturing immense-pleasured images, taking interviews of world-famous personalities, vanity van shots, behind the scenes, and a lot more is showcased in the documentary. Life through a lens is a documentary that focuses on the life of Annie Leibovitz through a lens. It is a deserving movie for artists. Photographers who have different genres of specialisation or an amateur, everyone feels so complete after watching this documentary. Part of the “American Masters” series, this documentary is in the business of reverence. Made by Ms Leibovitz’s younger sister, Barbara. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Jann Wenner were just a few of the commentators summoned to speak glowingly of Ms Leibovitz’s achievements.

“The official cover of the documentary” About Annie Leibovitz

Among other honours, Leibovitz has been made a Commander des Ordre des Arts Lettres by the French government. She has been designated a living legend by the Library of Congress. Her first museum show, Photographs: Annie Leibovitz 1970-1990, took place in 1991 at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. and toured internationally for six years. At the Annie Leibovitz time she was only the second living portraitist, and the only woman to be featured in an exhibition by the institution. Leibovitz met Susan Sontag in 1989 while photographing the writer for her book AIDS and its Metaphors. Leibovitz said in an interview with New York times “I remember going out to dinner with her and just sweating through my clothes because I thought I couldn’t talk to her”. Sontag told her, “You’re good, but you could be better.” Though the two kept separate apartments, their relationship lasted until Sontag’s death in late 2004. Leibovitz composed her personal photographs with materials that she used when she was first starting out in the ’70s: a 35-millimetre camera, black-and-white Tri X film. “I don’t have two lives,” she writes in her book’s introduction. “This is one life, and the personal pictures and the assignment work are all part of it.” Still, she told the Times, this book is the “most intimate, it tells the best story, and I care about it.” Maushi Journal maushi@chiiz.com

TEAR OF A BRIDE A SONINKE WEDDING

Quim Fàbregas is photographing the world for two decades. He is grasping at the Look, and reaching the Soul. Quim has been able to help many communities and many people in different countries, and this has been possible thanks to his belief that together we can make a better world. The achievement of more than fifty photographic awards during his photographic career is worth mentioning. The benefits of selling his photographs help different humanitarian projects from many parts of the world. quimfabregas KAYATU’S WEDDING IN FEB 2006 Quim has been in Julanguel, Gambia, for three days, where Moussa Molo, African Association of Calella (Barcelona), cooperates so that a community without resources can have a more dignified life. In two days, Kayatu was getting married. She was fifteen years old. She tells Quim what a Muslim wedding is like, with all its rituals. Three consecutive days, with a great party where all the family members and friends get together. At four in the evening, Quim witnessed a crowd of about 150 women, girls, and boys approaching the house. Three musicians start playing music, and a great festival started. During the three days of the ceremony, there were many rituals, especially on the bride’s part, the groom was hardly seen. During this whole time, the groom was available in a corner smoking with his friends. The groom was her (Kayatu) first cousin. The most crucial moment of the wedding arrived, and fortunately, they let Quim do the photographic report. The bride must follow a series of protocols. Water was the most used element in rituals to purify different parts of the bride’s body. In one of the rituals, a tear fell down her face, that tear dropped after a long time. The wedding continued for three intense days, and the protagonist was always Kayatu. Following the rituals of the Muslim religion and the ethnic group itself, the Soninke ethnic group, she had to go through a series of “tests” in order to get married. Kayatu wore a black veil, and everything was very strange there. Quim’s team left the house. Only musicians were the only men left there. Women, girls, and boys can only attend the bride’s rituals. The men were celebrating on their own, having tea. The mid-wife led the way to the elementary school to continue with the water ritual. She had a bucket ready and started bathing different parts of Kayatu’s body: her feet, hands, and head, always three times, as Islam dictates. After this ritual, there was around half an hour to go to the next ritual. Suddenly, a girl about six years old came in and told us that the following ritual is starting. She took Quim’s hand and headed him to a room where he found a surreal panorama. There were at least 25 people in that room of about 5 square meters. They were all screaming and jumping with an extraordinary emotion. The excitement was uncontrollable. It was as if they had taken drugs. Quim saw her squatting, with many people on top of her. The midwife was sitting in front of her, and suddenly something incomprehensible happened. “I remember that I could hardly press the button to take the pictures, I couldn’t do it. I saw blood dripping onto the floor, and Kayatu’s gaze fixed on me. I stopped photographing. I could not do it.”, Quim said. As blood dripped, all the girls and women started screaming more and more, dancing, and hugging each other. Kayatu could barely get up as she was in pain, and, suddenly, she fell to the ground and started hitting it. At night, she had to pass the last test, answering a questionnaire to the older people’s committee. Once they saw that everything was fine, she could enter the room where the boyfriend, her first cousin, was waiting for him. She went in with the midwife. Now the contrasts changed. Kayatu was dressed in white, pure white, following her cultural beliefs. The groom was waiting for her in bed. “Kayatu’s tear pierced my soul. Then I began to understand what the Soul is.”, Quim iterated deeply. We met again after thirteen years!

THE REUNION In February 2019, thirteen years after the mythical photography, Quim decided to return to Julanguel, the town where Kayatu and her family lived. Quim traveled to the village with his project partners from Gambia and Senegal. After so many years, it was tough to remember exactly where the marriage happened. Those villages don’t appear on Google Maps. Quim said, “The funny thing is that when we were leaving, she just arrived to see her family and we hugged each other. We both remembered each other very much. She told me that she had eight children that are malnourished. And her husband went to Mauritania to find a job to be able to feed his family.” From that moment on, Quim made a plan to help her family to have a better life. They started a campaign to sell pictures of her image, “The Tear of the Bride.” The photos were signed by Quim and Kayatu. “Thanks to the campaign, we were able to give her a monthly payment so that all her children could go to school and her husband could go back home.”, Quim said.
