Miracle Mud Techirghiol, derived from (Turkish) Tekir’s lake, is a small Romanian town on the Black Sea famous for its therapeutic mud discovered by an old Turkish man and his donkey. There are several variations of the story and its origins, but all share the same principle: the thick black mud (highly-concentrated sediment rich in organic matter) found at the bottom of the lake is particularly effective in the treatment of arthritis, musculoskeletal disorders, skin ailments and detoxification, and beneficial for overall well-being. In the beginning of the 20th century, when the curative properties of the mud were recognized by the scientific community, Techirghiol established itself as a spa town with organized mud extraction and treatment facilities. The public nomol (mud) baths are open 7 days a week. Buckets of mud are spread around the beach and people cover all or parts of their bodies then stand in the sun for 20-30 minutes as it hardens, changing from shiny black to light gray. Next a swim in the lake gently and ecologically washes the mud off sustainably recycling it. But that is not all. The benefits of the saline lake water are extracted by allowing the salt to dry on the skin in the sun. A final rinse in fresh water leaves the skin soft and hydrated. Residents of the region have been coming here their whole lives, while visitors from other parts of Romania and elsewhere generally come for a week or two combining specialized treatments at the sanatorium or more luxurious hotels with regular visits to the lake.

Portrait statement For this series, as I felt it was inappropriate to roam the beach shooting half-naked people documentary style without asking for permission upfront, I decided to shoot portraits in front of a black cloth background. The idea - black on black - was to block out all distractions in order to emphasize the connection between man and earth. To convince people to pose in front of my set-up, I promised it would only take a few minutes. For some, I suggested they put the mud on their bodies while I took some shots. Others were already covered, waiting for it to dry before rinsing off in the lake. To help them relax in front of the camera, I had a friend move around the set asking basic questions about where they were from, how long they’ve been coming to the lake, what the benefits of the mud are, etc., to distract them and put them at ease.

Book Review Street Photography Now by Sophie Howarth and Stephen McLaren For the last twenty years, the candid photography of life in public has been mostly underground but secretly flourishing, stimulated by digital cameras’ wide availability, a profusion of photo blogs, and new self-publishing opportunities. Street Photography Now is a survey book of contemporary street photography, edited by Sophie Howarth and Stephen McLaren and published by Thames & Hudson in 2010. It includes work by 56 photographers. Blake Andrews described the book as “the first broad street photography book to be published since Bystander in 1994”. Between 2010 and 2012, a series of exhibitions were held in Europe with work from the book. Book content Street Photography Now includes portfolios of work and biographies of Christophe Agou, Gary Alexander, Arif Aşçı, Narelle Autio, Bang Byoung-Sang, Polly Braden, Maciej Dakowicz, Carolyn Drake, Melanie Einzig, Peter Funch, Thierry Girard, Andrew Glickman, George Georgiou, David Gibson, Bruce Gilden, Siegfried Hansen, Cristóbal Hara, Markus Hartel, Nils Jorgensen, Richard Kalvar, Osamu Kanemura, Martin Kollar, Jens Olof Lasthein, Frederic Lezmi, Stephen McLaren, Jesse Marlow, Mirko Martin, Jeff Mermelstein, Joel Meyerowitz, Mimi Mollica, Trent Parke, Martin Parr, Gus Powell, Mark Alor Powell, Bruno Quinquet, Raghu Rai, Paul Russell, Boris Savelev, Otto Snoek, Matt Stuart, Ying Tang, Alexey Titarenko, Lars Tunbjörk, Nick Turpin, Jeff Wall, Munem Wasif, Alex Webb, Richard Wentworth, Amani Willett, Michael Wolf, Artem Zhitenev and Wolfgang Zurborn0. It also includes four essays and a transcript of a conversation between Lezmi, Marlow, Alor Powell, Gus Powell, Russell, Tang, and Turpin. Included are luminaries such as Magnum grandmasters Bruce Gilden, Martin Parr, and Alex Webb, as well as an international group of emerging photographers whose views of New York or Tokyo, Mumbai or Bournemouth, Istanbul or Dakar, all record moments in time that will never be repeated. Street Photography Now seems intimately tied to the web. . . . The selection of photographers seems young, global, and web-savvy, with a substantial dose of HCSP, Flickr, and In-Public members. / Meanwhile, some street stalwarts who aren’t daily participants in the online world are left out, e.g., Charles Traub, Sylvia Plachy, Daido Moriyama, Friedlander, and Henry Wessel, not to mention the patron saint of candid street photography, Elliott Erwitt. Joel Meyerowitz is included even though he hasn’t been an active street shooter for 40 years.
Project The accompanying Street Photography Now Project was a year-long collaboration between McLaren, Howarth, and The Photographers’ Gallery. The project was open to the public, and participants were “invited to contribute a photograph each week following a weekly instruction” by a photographer. Through the portrait of 46 current photographers, the authors of this book show us the best of contemporary creation in a field that has not stopped to fascinate photographers, writers, and an amateur audience of “decisive moments” (since the time of Gary Winogrand, Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Robert Frank, four of the greatest Street photographer names). All the magic, poetry, beauty, and the comic and tragedy of our urban lives are revealed by these photographers who can report the complexity of the human condition with a rare eloquence. Through four essays addressing the major themes of street photography and a conversation between several of the genre’s main protagonists, the authors show how street photography raises many exciting questions. Funny, moving, captivating, the photographs gathered here vividly affirm that the street photography is as rich as the man on the street - for those who know how to see and look.

Movie Review Tierney Gearon: The Mother Project Initial release: 2006 Directors: Jack Youngelson, Peter Sutherland Music director: Justin Marchacos Cast: Tierney Gearon, Peter Sutherland Producers: Jack Youngelson, Peter Sutherland Cinematography: Jack Youngelson, Peter Sutherland
Photographer Tierney Gearon—best known for pictures of her naked children, assailed as pornography during a London show—set out to create a new cycle portraying not only her kids but her elderly, irascible, and occasionally unbalanced mother. Jack Youngelson and Peter Sutherland’s intimate documentary captures all three generations as Gearon conceives and shoots the photos. It’s fascinating for its glimpses of how her troubled upbringing colors her efforts to raise her son and daughter. The men in these families are long gone, and when Gearon becomes pregnant with her third child, the father’s name never even comes up. Yet, in this strictly feminine environment, some of the most startling observations come from Gearon’s unsentimental young son. Celebrated photographer Tierney Gearon’s work has been labeled manipulative, disturbing, and even perverse. A former model and dancer, Gearon came to notorious fame in 2001 when photos of her own naked and masked children in the “I Am a Camera” show at London’s Saatchi Gallery had authorities threatening child pornography charges. About Jack Youngelson Jack Youngelson has worked as a writer, producer, and field producer on documentary projects that have been shown by numerous broadcasters in the United States and the UK. Over the past 5 years, he has collaborated as a writer/ producer with the award-winning production company, Moxie Firecracker Films, on various documentary projects, including Ghosts of Abu Ghraib, which premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival before being broadcast on HBO, and The Nazi Officerâs Wife, which screened at various international film festivals and had a theatrical release before its television premiere on A&E. That same year, Jack also wrote and produced Connecticut: Seasons of Light about the American Impressionist art movement. The film, narrated by Brian Dennehy, won a 2003 Regional Emmy for Outstanding Cultural Affairs Program. Jack graduated in 1990 from Princeton University. About Peter Sutherland Peter Sutherland was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and raised in Colorado. The move to New York City in 1998 prompted his first feature documentary, Pedal, a film about the cityâs bike messengers that premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival in 2001 before airing on Sundance Channel. Along with numerous other television credits, Sutherland worked as a director of photography on Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator, a documentary about
‘‘The Official Cover of The Film’’
a famous skateboarder convicted of murder. Directed by Helen Stickler, Stoked premiered at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival and was also released theatrically. Sutherland has published numerous photographic works through publishers such as powerhouse Books, Nieves, Art Beat Press, and P.A.M. books. About the Documentary The documentary follows Tierney over three years as she assembles her new body of work, a project that promises to be even more provocative than the photos that originally made her career. The film documents an incredibly tumultuous period in Tierney’s life, from London to Los Angeles to have a third child at age 41. Tierney is famously reclusive and has always wanted her work to speak for itself, for her audience not to have any preconceived ideas about Part of the fascination of “Tierney Gearon: The Mother Project,” which runs at the Museum of Fine Arts as part of its “Art on Film” series, is that the documentary is so firmly planted at the intersection of - maybe that should be a collision between - artistic selfinvolvement and family. Early in the film, Gearon confides that her mother is manicdepressive and schizophrenic. The older woman is a handful. “Are you going to pay me for my time, Tierney?” she asks as she poses. Still, the daughter’s description sounds like the sort of exaggerated complaint most adult children will make about a difficult parent. By the time the Mom confides that she’s the secret daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, we see what Gearon means. Some of Tierney Gearon’s photos are very good, especially her portraits of her mother (who’s almost as striking in appearance as she is in behavior). But what the documentary makes plain is that photography isn’t really Gearon’s calling. It’s performance art - more specifically, multi-generational performance art. “When I do things, I do things full force,” she declares. There’s no doubt about that, nor about her mother’s willingness to participate (her occasional recalcitrance notwithstanding). It’s the children one wonders about - and fears for.

Old is Gold The Olympic Milestone (1968) by David Paynter Marathon athlete Mathias Kanda, a member of the Rhodesian Olympic athletics team, runs against a steam train known as The Gwelo to Selukwe Flyer. The photo was initiated in collaboration with John Cheffers, the team’s Australian coach, to promote the Olympic team. As a photo of the month (June 1968) for the Associated Press, the image was distributed worldwide. Despite the multi-racial selection of the Rhodesian Olympic team, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) was banned from competition in the 1968 Summer Olympic in Mexico City, because of international protest against apartheid. Rhodesia did not allow black Rhodesians to vote in national elections. However, the limitations did not demean the spirit within him. Endurance came to him innately and became his constant companion. His earnest diligence drove him to the direction of glory and eminence. He was the subject of a photograph taken by David Paynter in 1968 which became the Associated Press June 1968 “Photo of the Month”. In the photograph, Kanda is seen running against a train; this photograph has been referenced several times by other photographers and sign designers since 1968. The 26 July 1968 Life Magazine published this picture. About David Paynter David Paynter was born in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and educated in Cape Town. At the age of 19, he joined the Rhodesia Herald as a cadet photographer, rising to the chief photographer within eight years. He later worked for the Johannesburg-based Argus Africa News Service, which took him on assignments across the continent, many of them of wildlife importance. Subsequently, he found himself desk-bound as illustrations editor of the Cape Argus newspaper in Cape Town before departing at the age of 50 to resurrect his cameras as a means of exploring his love of natural history on a full-time basis.
wildlife contest (it was submitted, unknown to Paynter, by a colleague), he was awarded the Grand Prize in the prestigious American Sierra Club Awards for 1992. His published books include the definitive guide, Kruger: Portrait of a National Park, The Presidential Elephants of Zimbabwe (a story about a herd of elephants formally adopted by President Robert Mugabe to ensure their ongoing protection from poachers and socalled “authorized hunters), for which he was principal photographer, as well as Elephant, Me, a lavishly illustrated coffee-table volume describing tales from the lifetime of (a fictitious) elephant called Tembo Ndlovu, which took him many years of difficult, multi-country travel to complete. Major exhibitions of his work (entitled Take a Tusker by the Tail) were first displayed in the United Kingdom and within four major cities across Southern Africa. Subsequently, at the WIPO Gallery (United Nations) and the Aniéres Gallery, both sited in Geneva, Switzerland. In July 2017, he and Cav. Giuseppe Arena opened the “Private Gallery” in the beautiful wine district of Agliano in the rolling hills of Piemonte, Italy.
Paynter has won many national and international awards for his work, mainly within the ambit of news photography, including, among others, Sports Photograph of the Year (UK), Regional Press Photographer of the year (UK), First Prize, News Category, World Press Photo (Holland) and the National Press Award for Enterprising Journalism (South Africa).
