VERTICAL WINDLASSES - VR/VRC (C = CAPSTAN ) These windlasses have a main vertical shaft and horizontal gypsy. The vertical configuration allows for single and twin installations with the advantage of installing the windlasses in various positions. This facilitates the positioning of hawser pipes, chain pipes and anchors. In some cases it may be preferable to install windlasses closer to the centre line or further apart. Muir vertical windlass design innovation enables to strip the running gear above the deck plate and remove the drive gear below deck with the deck plate and chain pipe or chain pipe roller intact. Under deck rigid self aligning gear drive-to deck plate couplings ensures alignment is maintained at all times with the advantage to locate the gear drive in multiple and preferred positions below deck.
VRC13000
Verticals require less deck space and vertical capstans have operational advantages for mooring purposes due to the radial scope of the lead. For servicing and lubrication all running gear is readily accessible. In line planetary drives are available on some vertical models with AC brake motor fitted. Hydraulic drives are fitted with counter balance valves to prevent runback. Heavy-duty dog clutch drives on larger models ensure positive drive at all times, with hand wheels and brake bands to gypsies. Our new generation VR/VRC 6000, 8000, 11000 designs incorporate extended deck plates for the brake band location and integral chain pipe. Standard units with circular base plate have installation flexibility of rotating brake band and hand wheel positions. Up to 180° chain wrap on vertical designs, ensures optimum utilisation of the chain gypsy pockets. Independent operation of the capstan and gypsy is achieved by declutching the drive & gypsy. All units are available with the extended capstan for positioning the gypsy below deck and capstan above deck for mooring and line hauling purposes. HORIZONTAL WINDLASSES - HR These windlasses have the main drive shaft with single or dual chain gypsies and capstans driving through a single gear drive.This is totally enclosed in the windlass casing above deck, which is an advantage when space below deck is tight. A horizontal windlass gypsy increases the height of fall of the chain into the chain locker where depth may be critical. Positioning of the gypsy and chain pipe requires the location of the horizontal windlass above the chain-locker and the lead from the bow roller or hawser pipe determines the location. Gypsy centres to windlass or vessel centre line can not be varied. All running gear can be serviced and lubricated without interfering with the windlass casing or chain pipes. Independent operation of capstan(s) and gypsies by declutching the drive. Operation of the horizontal capstan in the standing position for mooring and line handling can be advantageous. Horizontal windlass casings are cast marine grade aluminium alloy with white gloss finish. All Muir horizontal windlasses have heavy-duty clutch drives with hand wheel brake bands to gypsies for infinite control. A vertical capstan option on top of the windlass can facilitate mooring and line handling when horizontal capstans can not be fitted due to tight deck space. VERTICAL MOORING AND DOCKING CAPSTANS (WINCHES) Capstans are usually located on the aft deck to assist in the mooring of the yacht. Foot switch and remote controls can operate capstans. Capstans are supplied with 90° worm gear drives for compact installation. Capstans can be serviced with deck plate intact from top and bottom side. Capstan selection should be considered with warping line sizes and flexibility of warp. Capstan dimensions are identical to equivalent vertical windlasses. Atlantic range windlasses low profile VR2500/3500/4000 with rope chain gypsy and Rope Chain Management System (RCMS) are ideal for hands free automatic mooring and docking operations. Models 2500 & 3500 are now available as Docking Capstans. Refer page 29.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION

The company has adopted the corporate policy of manufacturing and selling products which have the recognised standard of quality that satisfies customers throughout the effective life span of the product. It is therefore an essential requirement of this stipulated policy for Muir Engineering Pty Ltd to produce and supply its customers with products which are suitable for their intended purpose, and which are in conformity with the relevant and agreed specification or contract. The procedures outlined in our quality assurance manual describe how the quality system is designed to ensure that customer requirements are recognised and that consistent control of these requirements is established, implemented and maintained. Strict adherence to the policy stated above is a requirement of every aspect of Muir Engineering Pty Ltd. In compliance with our quality policy, the following pages containing specification and drawings are all available in paper copy. AutoCAD drawings are available as digital files. Standard builds are bronze with chromed finish and knurled capstans. Vertical and horizontal builds can be supplied in polished bronze, chrome bronze, stainless steel, alloy or cast steel or a combination to suit the designers and owners requirements. Triple chrome plating with a minimum of 35 microns is used in production. All running gear is high tensile bronze. Main drive shaft, brake spindle, handwheels and fastenings are stainless steel. Motor drives and gears below deck are finished in white gloss with non-corrosive weight saving marine alloy components used where practicable. Heavy-duty brake design on some models may not require use of chain stoppers or where distance between spurling pipe and gypsy is tight. Devil claws and bow rollers are available for all sizes. On placing an order we require a chain sample, including joining links and kenter shackles (if they are to be accommodated), so they can be matched to the chain gypsy. WINDLASS KW Power shown meets or exceeds classification rules requirements. KW may be increased if required for special applications. MOORING CAPSTANS Selection and sizing needs to consider high profile, large or heavy displacement craft and high wind conditions to be encountered while mooring. WINDLASSES AND MOORING CAPSTANS It is advisable to maximise KW power on AC/two speed drives to optimise functionality, and to prevent the circuit breaker tripping. KW POWER REQUIREMENTS May vary between planetary worm and gear drives. RATING CAPACITY IS BASED ON MAXIMUM SHORTLINK CHAIN SIZE AND STANDARD ELECTRIC AND HYDRAULIC MOTORS. GLOSSARY OF TERMS Rating: Is the maximum pull, load, that is applied to the winch/windlass. Working Load: As stated or recommended by the relevant classification society. Otherwise typically the lift is usually up to 25% of the rating. Gypsy: Chain wheel,Wild Cat. Model Numbers: Product numbers are not indicitave of the lift capacity, rating or working load.
OPTIONS: CONTROLS, STARTERS AND ACCESSORIES The design of the preferred starting system is important. Control cabinets and starters for single speed, dual speed and variable speed for AC motor can be supplied to customer requirements. It should be noted that the vessels generating capacity and requirements should start under high load. Foot operated, remote and hand held controls are available for hydraulic and electric windlasses and capstans. For more detail refer to Master Control and Accessories Section on page 41. MOTOR PROTECTION Thermistors are available to protect AC motors from condensation, and should be connected to the circuit trip relays to provide overload protection. CHAIN GYPSIES These are available to suit ISO, DIN 766 and Studlink marine chains. CUSTOM DESIGNED WINDLASSES Custom designed windlasses for specialised installations can be supplied on request.
CLASSIFICATION PERFORMANCE AND TYPE APPROVAL Classification requires a minimum speed of 9 metres/minute and Muir designs have optional two speed systems in hydraulic or AC drives up to 18 metres/minute. Muir supply to specific classification society requirements including ABS, Lloyds, DNV, NKK, BV, K.R and CCS. DEFINITION: FOR APPLICATION IN THIS CATALOGUE WINDLASS: A vertical or horizontal mechanical apparatus hand, electric or hydraulic for pulling or hoisting anchor and cable (chain or synthetic rope), incorporating a circular chain wheel or gypsy normally with a minimum of five pockets into which anchor chain links fit snugly. Synthetic three strand nylon lines can be pulled in the chain wheel if the design incorporates a grooved vee section with an appropriate stripper and tensioner to drive the rope. WINCH: A vertical or horizontal apparatus used for hoisting or pulling purposes incorporating a storage drum around which is wrapped wire cable or rope, mechanically activated by hand, electrical or hydraulic power.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Chain Stoppers are strongly recommended for safe anchoring by taking the load off the windlass and preventing damage to vital components, especially in severe conditions. Chain lock relies on a tongue locking into the chain links preventing the chain from running out.

A CCESSORIES Master Control
Master control hydraulic power units comprise pump, motor, valve block (with pressure relief valve and pressure gauge), and oil reservoir with a capacity of 25, 50, 75, 100, 300 litres (5.5, 11, 16.5, 22 and 26 gallons). Displacement can be selected from 1-16cm2 per revolution and the drive power of the electric motor from 0.25-20kW (1/3-26hp) according to reservoir size, full technical specifications are available on request.

Portable Hand Pendant control unit These highly sophisticated weatherproofed solid-state modules give you complete control of your winch/windlass operations from anywhere on your boat.They may be used at any one of several sealed extension plug units located wherever you require. Radio Control Units are available.
Panel - mounted remote control station with up/down switch. Just a press of a button raises and lowers your anchor.Also available is a remote control station which gives a visual warning when a thermal over load protector had been activated.
