This year Chizuk Amuno celebrates 140 years of presence and participation in the larger Baltimore community and in the United States, as well as in our connection with Israel. We have always prided ourselves on our leadership role in adult learning, and we continue to maintain adult learning as a priority in our congregation. About 2,000 years ago, the mishnah articulated what was perhaps the first formal curriculum: 5 years old - Bible; 10 - Mishnah; 13 - Mitzvot; 15 Talmud; 18 - marriage; 20 - pursuit of a livelihood; 30 - the peak of one’s powers; 40 - understanding; 50 - the age of counsel; 60 - old age, and so on. Well, things are far different now. They are even very different from what they were 140 years ago. Happily, today we can look forward to long, productive lives. We recognize that adults continue to develop personally, especially if their lives are enriched with Torah. It is our goal to make every adult a lifelong learner; to join others on a never ending journey that continues to enrich us as Jews. Please join us as we continue to grow Jewishly, to learn with and from one another, and to prepare for the future of our beloved congregation. Best wishes for a year of good health, happiness, and peace, enriched with Jewish learning.

Encountering Sacred Texts: Learning in the Presence of the Other NEW
October 5, 12, 19, 26; November 2, 9, 23, 30; December 7, 14 12:30 - 2 p.m. A class on Talmud texts that delves into the fundamental relationships that determine the quality and texture of our lives: relationships with colleagues and peers, with the community as a whole, among leaders of a community, with God. The students study extended passages of Talmud in-depth, learning how the Rabbis structured stories and conveyed ideas through narrative, and how aggadah functions theologically in the context of halakakhic sections of gemara.
Rabbi Ilyse Kramer, ICJS Educator Rosann M. Catalano, Ph.D., ICJS Roman Catholic Scholar
October 11, 25; November 8, 22; December 6; February 14, 28; March 14, 28; April 11 7:15 - 8:45 p.m. Please join us as we explore the ways Jews and Christians read their sacred texts. The Tanakh, the New Testament, and rabbinic literature will be our guides as we study the emergence of Rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity out of the chaos that followed the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE. By placing these texts in conversation with each other and with us around the table we hope to gain new insights into the formation of the religious identities of our two communities and to learn something of ourselves and of the other that we could not have learned otherwise. Come study with us in an atmosphere of lively exchange and challenging discussion.

Am Yisrael - The People of Israel Eretz Yisrael - The Land of Israel Medinat Yisrael - The State of Israel NEW Rabbi Ron Shulman
62nd Annual Baltimore Board of Rabbis Adult Institute of Jewish Studies Classes meet at Chizuk Amuno Congregation October 5, 12, 19, 26 7:30 - 8:40 p.m. Today many Jews seek to know something more about who we are, how we relate to one another and to others, and to the Land and State of Israel. Today many ask questions about the nature and character of Jewish peoplehood and Zionism. Do the values and concepts of early Zionism still resonate with us today as American Jews? Will political realities change the face of Zionism? Let’s enter into this discussion by exploring traditional Jewish texts and contemporary Jewish thought.

Ken Meltzer, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Program Annotator and “Insider”
Sunday, March 13 1 - 4 p.m. “With this opera, my artistic career may be said to have begun.” Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi scored a remarkable triumph when his early opera, Nabucco, premiered at the La Scala Opera House in Milan on March 9, 1842. Verdi’s powerful and revolutionary musical setting of the story of exiled Hebrews, suffering under the domination of the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar, resonated with Italians yearning for their own unified homeland. Nabucco immediately catapulted Verdi to national - and ultimately international - prominence.
The Flying Karamazov Brothers–An off-Broadway hit that is a unique blend of music, comedy, dance, theater, and juggling. The New York Times called it “A triumph! 100 minutes of cleverness and comedy that go by in a flash! Great fun to watch!”
