Selihot: An Evening of Greeting, Study, and Conversation Saturday, September 20 Join with our community to prepare for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.

8:30 p.m. Havdalah 8:45 p.m. “Prayer: Advocacy before God or

a Quest for Self Awareness?” We misunderstand prayer. In our recitation and reading we actually serve as advocates for a powerful agenda. Holding a prayer book in our hands, participating in a worship service, the question we have to ask is before whom and for what we are advocating? What’s the real point of prayer? Throughout the ages, Jews have asked and tried to answer this question. Have we? Before the High Holy Days arrive, shouldn’t we? Join Rabbi Ron Shulman in study and discussion as an introduction to High Holy Day Services. 9:15 p.m. Dessert Reception

In friendship and conversation, we’ll join to renew our bonds as a synagogue community before the first “formal” service of the High Holy Day season. 9:45 p.m. Preparing for the New Year

Before our service begins, the Torah Scrolls in the ark are publicly changed into their white High Holy Day covers which symbolize the freshness and purity of the coming New Year. 10 p.m. Selihot Service

A String Quartet will accompany Hazzan Perlman and the Chizuk Amuno choir during our Selihot Service. During the service, our rabbis will each reflect on this question: “What do you pray for in the New Year?” We will read and recite the prayers and reflections of our Selihot Service that evening from Mahzor Lev Shalem. During the Selihot Service we are introduced to some of the prayers and motifs of the coming Days of Awe. We conclude our evening with the sounding of the Shofar. The Selihot Service is an emotional, spiritual, and evocative evening of teshuvah, repentance, reflecting upon our deeds and experiences this year as we consider personal and religious goals for future growth and change.

Blessing Our Children On the First night of Rosh HaShanah

September 24, 6 p.m. It is a lovely Jewish custom to begin each holiday occasion with blessings and hopes for our children. Receiving their parents’ loving embrace at the start of a New Year, children of all ages, children of every generation, feel the joy and promise in holiday celebration. At Chizuk Amuno, we will celebrate this timeless tradition as a community during our first service of the New Year. Our family blessings are inclusive, celebrating all ages and each generation. Parents, bring your children. Adult children, bring your parents, your children’s grandparents. Grandparents, bring your children and grandchildren. We look forward to sharing in blessing our children and the blessing of beginning the new Jewish year together.

Tashlikh

Thursday, September 25 4:30 p.m. On Rosh HaShanah afternoon, it is customary to participate in a ceremony called Tashlikh, from the Hebrew for “send-off” or “cast away.” An informal experience, we symbolically cast off our sins by throwing bread crumbs into a stream of flowing water. Join us in the synagogue courtyard for uplifting music and song, holiday discovery, and refreshments before we walk to the stream down Phillips Drive.

Join the Shalom Squad – It’s a Mitzvah! Please consider serving as a greeter or a host during the High Holy Days and at services throughout the year. It’s meaningful to our members and visitors – they feel welcomed when greeted by a friendly face, assisted to their seat, or they get help finding the correct page. For details, please contact Paulette Pollack, 410/486-6400 or ppollack@chizukamuno.org.

Yom Kippur Food Drive

Friday-Monday September 26-October 6 In the Haftarah for Yom Kippur, the prophet Isaiah implores Jews to fast not just by refraining from food, but by taking meaningful social action. The words of the prophet are as urgent now as when they were originally written. As you reflect on the past year and on the one that is nearing, consider putting Isaiah’s message of social responsibility into action by making a contribution of nonperishable food items to the bins in the lobbies.
