KRIEGER SCHECHTER DAY SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015

KSDS ACHIEVEMENTS VISION OF GOOD TEACHING Working with the Mandel Center at Brandeis University, Krieger Schechter administration and faculty spent the past two years immersed in developing a document for growth and support entitled “Vision of Good Teaching at Krieger Schechter.” The document is a continuum that looks at six specific standards, including: Knowing Children As Learners; Planning Instruction for All Students; Engaging and Supporting Student Learning; Assessing Student Learning; Building a Learning Community Rooted in Jewish Values; and Developing As a Professional Educator. The school is using this document to reinforce growth and professional development among faculty members.

TA’AM SHABBAT This year, on Friday afternoons, the entire school stopped classes 45 minutes early to participate in Ta’am Shabbat. Once a month, parents and community members were invited to join our students to celebrate Shabbat in a ruach-filled session. Other weeks included friend-to-friend Shabbat experiences between Lower School and Middle School students, division-wide celebrations, and class/grade gatherings. The goal of Ta’am Shabbat is to give all of our students an opportunity to symbolize Shabbat through a separation from the rest of the week’s learning.

BO N’DABER Under the leadership of Dr. Sharon Buck and Kristen Wavle, KSDS developed and introduced our own socialemotional curriculum called Bo N’Daber, based on best practices throughout North America, and making it our own distinctive curriculum by integrating Jewish values. Themes were carefully selected that aligned based on a very specific Jewish teaching each month.

TIKKUN OLAM - REPAIRING THE WORLD

KSDS raised over $10,000 through its weekly tzedakah collection to support local, national, and global causes including cancer research, Israel, homelessness, poverty, the environment, and many more.

LOWER SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS A NEW WAY TO START THE DAY One of the many gifts of being part of a community infused with Jewish values is that we have built-in mechanisms for transitions. Whether it is reciting a blessing before we eat, lighting candles on Shabbat and holidays, or havdalah (which literally means separate), rituals help prepare us to move from one experience to another as we strive to make every moment count. These rituals are not only practical time-management tools. Rituals bring us together and make us feel part of a community while raising up a moment to a holier level. If you have had the chance to be in the building during morning dropoff this year, you may have noticed an addition to our morning ritual. Instead of just being sent to their lockers at 8:05 during morning dropoff, Lower School students line up with their classes in the Rosenbloom lobby. The Kindergardeners and 1st graders join us from the gym, and we have a flag ceremony together as a Lower School community. The students hear the signal and they understand that we are now transitioning to a time of calm, quiet, and respect. We say the Pledge and sing Hatikvah together, sometimes adding a patriotic song (like “My Country Tis of Thee), or a morning prayer as the teachers stand with their students. Once the ceremony ends, the teachers escort their classes up to their lockers one by one to start the day. This new ritual in the Lower School has helped all of us to start off the day with a calm and respectful tone, helping us to transition from drop-off, which can be a hectic time, to a calmer place as we prepare for learning.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX One of the highlights of our STEAM Showcase this year was the Global Cardboard Challenge, where students and parents built an entire city out of cardboard and other recycled materials. Our annual STEAM Showcase gives our students and parents an opportunity to participate in hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math workshops facilitated by KSDS parents and other community members.

HALF DAY OF SERVICE Students at KSDS partnered with the Jewish Volunteer Connection to create a half day of service during the half day before Thanksgiving break. Students participated in learning and service projects that benefited seniors, members of our military serving overseas, and other individual and communities in need. The service learning experience gave students a chance to reflect on the meaning of gratitude and to give back to the community in Baltimore and beyond.

LOWER SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS LOWER SCHOOL MARKS THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF “THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER” Our Lower School marked the 200th anniversary of the writing of “The Star Spangled Banner” by gathering to form a living flag. They also sang several patriotic songs, including “The Star Spangled Banner,” of course!

BGE WIRES DOWN VIDEO CHALLENGE

KINDERGARTEN CLUBS A new and popular addition to our Kindergarten program has been hugim (clubs). Once a week, the students participate in small group activities facilitated by our administrators and teachers. From working with tools and building toys out of trash to cooking and Spanish, the K students get to explore a new activity and develop new interests in a small group format.

HOUR OF CODE This year our KSDS students participated in the Hour of Code, an international campaign that introduces students to the basics of computer science.

HONORING AND SUPPORTING THE ELDERLY THROUGH BUNCHES OF LUNCHES KSDS collected over 1,000 lunches for seniors in the Baltimore community who are living in poverty or on fixed incomes. Students decorated bags and wrote special notes to their senior friends. At the end of the year, the seniors were invited to KSDS so they and our students could get to know each other.

KSDS was awarded $1,000 for their submission to the Third Annual BGE Wires Down Video Challenge. The 4th graders worked with Mr. Thaler to integrate their learning of electricity and conduction into the filming of their version of the 2000 Emmy Awardwinning BGE commercial.

MIDDLE SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS GRADE 7 NON-CONFORMIST DEBATE 7th Grade English classes participated in the “Non-Conformist Debate” project. Students took their year-long research topic - a non conformist in history - and engaged additionally in oral debate seeking to prove, with evidence, that their personal non-conformist was the “best.” This project used Facing History and Ourselves as a lens for framing how a person’s actions can benefit others, and helped build our students’ argumentation and public-speaking skills.

CARIBBEAN LEARNING FESTIVAL The Middle School annual “Learning Festival” focused this year on the Caribbean, and specifically on the island of Hispaniola. During this three-day interactive experience, students learned about the culture, food, languages, people, history, geography and politics of the Caribbean. Students participated in special long-term, multi-grade projects allowing them to delve deeply into the cuisine, geography or humanitarian needs of the region, or to create a film documenting the Learning Festival experience.

STORYTELLING Several math teachers participated in a professional development course about integrated storytelling into their classroom teaching. Storytelling - by the teacher and by the students - became a new and important tool for increasing understanding of mathematical concepts through creativity and student engagement.

HALF DAY OF SERVICE The inaugural KSDS Half Day of Service on the day before Thanksgiving was a huge success. Middle School students participated in service activities throughout the Baltimore community. Partnerships included Paul’s Place and Art with a Heart.

MIDDLE SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS GRADE 8 MARY POPPINS The annual 8th grade play - a musical all in Hebrew - had another successful year. “Mary Poppins” was performed to the delight of sold-out audiences, and was a particular success for our brand-new director, Natalie Pilcher. We were thrilled to have Natalie and her creative talents join our KSDS faculty.

BRING-YOUR-OWN-LAPTOP PROGRAM In preparation for introducing a “bring-your-own-laptop” program for 7th and 8th grade students during the following year, Middle School teachers engaged in a year-long series of professional development workshops, webinars, observations of other private schools and peer teaching experiences related to meaningful integration of personal technology devices into classroom learning.

TORAH COMES ALIVE

GEOGRAPHY BEE

Middle School students explored the weekly Torah portion through the eyes and interpretations of a professional storyteller. By weaving together the narratives we study each year, students were able to see the Torah stories come alive and connect to each other, and to our lives as Jews today.

7th grader Jacob Lev was KSDS’s representative at the regional Geography Bee, at which he placed at a high enough level to advance to the state championship round.

SCHECHTER ON THE MOVE 5K RACE On Sunday, May 31, 2015 over 450 people participated in the Schechter on the Move 5K Race and 1 Mile Family Fun Run. This annual event is a highlight of the year, marking the conclusion of another successful school year and celebrating the special community at KSDS. Funds raised from race sponsorship go to support the KSDS Scholarship Fund. This year $42,780 was raised from the event and went to support the almost 50% of KSDS families that received need-based tuition assistance. Participants of all ages joined in the morning, walking and running the 3.1 miles through the Stevenson neighborhood that adjoins KSDS. A sea of bright orange (from the race shirts) could be seen throughout, and the energy was exciting. Back on the KSDS campus there were post-race festivities that included water tag, face painting and moon bounces. A great morning was had by all.
