Passover Culture

As background to our own Passover celebration, food historians are of the opinion that leavened bread originated in Egypt, probably less than a millennium before the pyramids were built. The Egyptians, while also consuming unleavened bread, were the first to produce leavened bread which became a symbol of Egyptian culture. This offers us remarkable understanding for why the Israelites left Egypt with matzah. For our Biblical ancestors, leaving Egypt with unleavened rather than leavened bread meant they were leaving Egyptian culture behind. They may have been in a hurry, but fleeing slavery they were ridding themselves of the culture that enabled their misery. I want to add this awareness to our Passover celebration. Careful that our food is matzah and not hametz, honoring the symbolism and the memory of our Jewish master story,

let’s focus on more than our meals. Let’s focus on our culture and walk away from the leavened, fermented elements which enslave us. In our contemporary culture, selfimportance enslaves us. We prize personal preference over communal norms. We are uncomfortable speaking of social responsibility. Imagine in the week of Passover absolute kindness and mutual respect between people. Imagine a week in which no one is mocked for their life circumstance. Imagine a week without the crass and the cruel that often passes for entertainment. Imagine a week of sincerity and honesty. Imagine a week during which other people’s needs are more important than our own desires. Imagine all of this for more than a week! In our synagogue community, this is also true. The variety of experiences we share in different settings each Shabbat and throughout every week reflect the diverse and dynamic nature of our congregational family. We are present to each other as individuals

creating and sustaining community for all of us. The Seder invites us to explore the role and responsibility of an individual in the life of a people. “In every generation, every individual should feel as though he or she had actually been redeemed from Egypt.” There was no way our ancestors could have left Egypt individually. It was only as a people that we attained our freedom. And, it is only as a community that we safeguard it. The society we seek requires humility, not arrogance. Fermented grain implies personal and social excess. Unleavened bread suggests modesty. As a result of our observance, may this Passover season inspire us toward greater compassion in our society and continued caring within our community. Hag Sameah v’Kasher – Enjoy a joyous and Happy Passover! Rabbi Ron Shulman

Learning @ Chizuk Gemilut Hasadim @ Amuno Chizuk Amuno KSDS Middle School Learning Festival Celebrates “El Caribe” a hesed project at the Esperanza center, which provides immigrants with language classes and medical, legal, and social services. Many members of the larger community participated in the festival, including a dance instructor who taught the merengue dance; Art with a Heart, which supplied pre-constructed masks inspired by Caribbean art for students to paint and decorate; and the Trinidad and Tobago Baltimore Steel Orchestra, which performed and demonstrated the basics of playing the steel drum. The Learning Festival concluded with a guest lecture from reporter and photojournalist Larry Luxner, who has spent considerable time covering the Jews of Hispaniola and the Caribbean. After Luxner’s Q&A session, the entire middle school viewed the student-created newscast summarizing the festival and enjoyed a festive carnival celebration. Students and faculty alike ended the festival with a much greater understanding of, and deep appreciation for, El Caribe and its people.

In February, the Krieger Schechter Day School middle school held its annual threeday Learning Festival. This year’s topic, “El Caribe” was a cross-curricular exploration of Hispaniola and the islands of the Caribbean. On the first day, students broke off into smaller, mixed-graded learning sessions covering aspects of the region’s culture, including dance, music, art, food, and sports. On day two, students again sectioned off into teams for “field experiences,” where they built a large-scale model of the island of Hispaniola; cooked authentic food of the islands (later enjoyed by their classmates); and prepared décor and props for a carnival celebration to close the festival. A roving film crew of students interviewed the other groups about their projects. Another team participated in

Having a Blast at the Chizuk Amuno Shabbatonim Watch out – the students have been taking over Chizuk Amuno! Two Shabbatot a year are set aside for the annual Chizuk Amuno Shabbaton programs, a Shabbat sleepover for 5th and 6th graders, and a day Shabbaton for 3rd and 4th graders. From the moment the students step into the Stulman Auditorium and meet their counselors, it becomes a Shabbat unlike any they’ve experienced before. For the duration of the Shabbaton the synagogue became home for our students. They slept in the library, prayed in the Hoffberger Chapel, ate in the Stulman Auditorium, and travelled throughout Chizuk Amuno as they moved from one activity to the next. This year the 5th and 6th graders welcomed magician Anthony Ware as their guest, while the 3rd and 4th graders enjoyed some Jewish comedy with the Bible Players. As they moved from scavenger hunts to hula hooping to Shabbat meals, everyone had the opportunity to try something new, meet someone new, and experience Shabbat in a new way.

In the words of our participants: “I loved the lighting of the candles, it made Shabbat seem special.” “It was amazing! I made new friends, met new people, and had tons of fun!” “You have to come next year!” “GO! Cuz it’s awesome.” In the words of our parents: “My son who attends KSDS has a new best friend from RRS.” “My child had such a wonderful time and she didn’t want it to end.” “This was definitely a Shabbaton to be remembered for a long time.” Chizuk Amuno would like to thank Morah Allen for working with our counselors and planning these two fabulous Shabbatonim.

Ramah Funds

In addition, through the Ramah Fellows program in which we employ a Ramah alum in our Rosenbloom Religious School, we were able to give out an additional $2,500 in scholarships. We are very grateful to our funders for their continued support of our Chizuk Amuno students. Their gift makes camp an affordable possibility for families who might otherwise not be able to provide a Ramah summer for their children. Plan ahead: If your child is interested in attending a Ramah Camp for Summer 2016 and is in need of scholarship funds, be in touch with Rabbi Wechsler at 410486-6400, ext. 231 or dwechsler@chizukamuno.org.

By Rabbi Debi Wechsler We have just completed our scholarship process for children and teens who will be attending Camp Ramah this summer. I am very pleased that this year we have increased both the number of our students who will be attending Ramah camps and the amount of scholarship money that we were able to distribute. Thanks to the generosity of six synagogue funds, we were able to assist students with need based scholarships totaling $7,500. 3

Wishing Mazal and Happiness Rick Bernard Moves On

We thank Rick Bernard, Chizuk Amuno’s Controller, for his dedication and hard work these past 15 years. Rick has worked in the accounting arena for 35 years, having previously worked for a large commercial cleaning company and a plastic bag manufacturer. During Rick’s tenure at Chizuk, he was involved with the cash management of the entire institution – congregation, schools, and the endowment funds in the Chizuk Amuno Foundation, Inc. He held an integral role in developing each year’s annual budget and took part in upgrading the accounting office software to Windows-based programs. Rick supervised our accounting department, comprised of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Human Resources. Our staff enjoyed working with Rick because he consistently maintained a steady and direct approach to his work. That calm demeanor also served to create respect among his colleagues and was a foundation on which staff built wonderful relationships with him. We will miss Rick tremendously and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

Celebrating with Sisterhood

Purim at Chizuk Amuno – Under the Big Top

Sisterhood celebrated Adar in style on February 28. Led by Sisterhood members, Shabbat services were moving and inspiring. Kudos to Ruthanne Kaufman and Naomi Amsterdam for their wonderful efforts to include “new and seasoned” members. That evening, more joy! Mordecai’s Diner Sock Hop was a treat – from the chocolate martinis to the soda floats and all the comfort food in between. (Thanks, Annie and crew!) DJ-spun tunes jarred memories of special times and special dances. Guests in their 50’s finery (and some extra hair as well) danced the night away. Special acknowledgement to Joy Katz and Patty Anbinder for creatively dressing up the room.

The best circus in town was at 8100 Stevenson Road this past Purim night. Jugglers, unicyclists, an aerialist, cotton candy, hot pretzels, balloon animals, and of course a few hamantaschen helped us celebrate Purim under the big top. We had lots of help celebrating in style with a special guest visit from Ravens’ mascot Poe, not to mention Batman, Elsa, and Elmo. Some may say that Chizuk Amuno is always the best circus in town, but last month it really was!

A Purim Seudah for Adult Learners

What better way is there to celebrate Purim day than with a Purim Seudah – a festive meal following the morning megillah reading?! Attendees of Rabbi Wechsler’s Thursday morning class, Boundaries in Jewish Tradition, celebrated a much belated Purim Seudah at her home following a snowed-out Purim. Newcomers are welcome to join our class any Thursday at 10:30 a.m. 8
