Greetings from Rabbi Shulman Dear Friends, uring my time away, I am re-examining the origins and essence of synagogue prayer with an eye on how we might reclaim something of the past and gain understanding for the future. In doing so, we can effectively respond in our congregation to the challenges of this modern moment in Jewish life. One of the most important achievements in the history of religion is the establishment of daily, communal prayer. In fact, during Second Temple times in Jerusalem, it was personal prayer and individual
D
devotion that led to the development of communal synagogue prayer services. Most of us don’t appreciate that the founding of the synagogue in ancient times marks one of the most important steps forward in the development of religion. The earliest synagogue assemblies were the first time in human history that regular communal worship took place outside of a sacred national Temple or shrine. We should value this. Synagogues are sacred because those who attend them make them so by their participation. We certainly feel this at Chizuk Amuno. This month, as I look in from the distance, I celebrate the vibrant variety of our prayer, learning, and activity as well as the energy and engagement of the people who make up our synagogue family.
Grateful for the gift of this Sabbatical time, I thank all of you for your support and on-going involvement. I also express my gratitude to Rabbi Wechsler, Rabbi Schneider, Hazzan Perlman, and our devoted staff and lay leaders for their extra efforts. Finding warmth in the cold of winter, I hope you can also find a little quiet time to renew and refocus. I look forward to returning in mid-March to all that awaits us and all we will celebrate. B’Shalom Rav, Rabbi Ron Shulman

We Honor Judy Meltzer on Her Retirement Sunday, March 30, Noon Please join us at this year’s Phyllis and Louis Friedman Annual Program, when we pay tribute to Judy Meltzer, our illustrious director of the Stulman Center for Adult Learning. Judy has been the director of our adult education program since its inception, over 17 years ago. During her tenure, Judy instituted many well-loved programs, including One Shul, One Title, One Month and the ever-popular Adult Summer Camp. She brought the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning to Chizuk Amuno, as well as
countless nationally and internationally renowned scholars, teachers, and literary stars. We will miss Judy’s leadership and wish her a long and fulfilling retirement filled with hundreds of her favorite books. Dara Horn, author, will speak about her most recent work, A Guide for the Perplexed: A Novel – a spellbinding story of how technology changes memory and how memory shapes the soul. Those who wish will have the opportunity to contribute to a special shelf being created in Judy’s honor in the Munitz Library. Please watch your mail for details. Many thanks to Phyllis and Louis Friedman for their generous sponsorship of this program. 1

A Community of Men
T
he Chizuk Amuno Brotherhood is a bunch of Jewish guys who do lots of fun things, as well as provide vital services for the greater Chizuk Amuno community. For example, Brotherhood members lead in-home shivah minyanim, run blood drives, hold Sunday morning breakfast learning programs, conduct Adopt-A-Road campaigns, assemble lulav and etrog sets, provide and help build sukkot, distribute Yom Hashoah memorial candles, and participate in the World Wide Wrap to further the use of tefillin. Social events are an important part of our organization. This year, Brotherhood members feasted at an August barbeque, cheered the Ravens on a big-screen television in the Esterson, hosted a bowling night, enjoyed a movie at the renovated Pikes Theater, and co-sponsored the Sisterhood/Brotherhood Pub Night. Our annual Brotherhood Shabbat service will take place this month. For this spring, we will participate in the Seaboard Region Man of the Year ceremony and enjoy a vicarious historical journey through Jewish Baltimore, a road trip to Mt. Vernon, a boisterous Men’s Night, and a parent/child evening. In addition, Brotherhood is leading an extremely meaningful and passionate project – Remember the Children – encouraging and enabling members of the Chizuk Amuno community to say Kaddish for young Holocaust victims who otherwise might never have been remembered in this way. The Chizuk Amuno Brotherhood is a vibrant organization that provides a niche for men of the congregation, while encompassing a variety of social, religious, and communal activities. There is something for every man in our Brotherhood. Join up and join in! The Brotherhood needs you, and you need the Brotherhood. B’Shalom, Gary Brager, President

Brotherhood Sponsors Zakhor Ha Yeladim – Remember the Children
The Chizuk Amuno Brotherhood announces a new and unique program designed to honor and perpetuate the memory of each child who perished during the Holocaust. Participants are encouraged to commit, to the best of their ability, to reciting the Kaddish and lighting a yahrzeit candle in memory of a specific murdered child during the year’s four Yizkor services as well as during the Yom HaShaoh observance each year. There is no fee to enroll in the program. Participants must be a Jewish adult over bar or bat mitzvah age. Once registered, participants will receive a fact sheet about ‘their’ child based on reliable testimony drawn from the names database of Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. In addition, a list of upcoming dates to recite Kaddish will be supplied. To register, click on the “Remember the Children” link on the Brotherhood page of the Chizuk Amuno website: www.chizukamuno.org. New Shabbat for Families
Getting to Know Bessie Bluefeld Monday, March 3, 7:30 p.m.
“And I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit into you…” —Ezekiel 36:26
Brotherhood is pleased to present The Leo V. Berger Immigrant’s Trunk Program: Bessie Bluefeld – a re-enactment of the life of Bessie Bluefeld, highlighting her arrival in the United States and her famed career as a Baltimore premier kosher caterer. Bessie was a young immigrant woman who came from Russia with her husband in 1907 and made a name for herself in the catering business. After several false starts, Bessie and her family started the company, Bluefeld Catering, which became synonymous with quality and class throughout the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area. Bessie’s story embodies the struggles and triumphs that an immigrant would experience making a new life in a new country. The presentation will feature actor/playwright, Terry Nicholetti. It will take place at Chizuk Amuno and include a dessert reception. The fee for the evening is $5; checks should be made out to the Chizuk Amuno Brotherhood and returned to the synagogue office to the attention of “Brotherhood” by Friday, February 21.
