THIS MONTH HaHodesh
AT CHIZUK AMUNO CONGREGATION AND SCHOOLS Engaging Jewish Life & Learning
May is a month to celebrate learning and teachers. It is the month of Shavuot where we mark the giving of RABBI DEBI WECHSLER our most important textbook – the Torah. It is also a month when the academic year draws to its annual close. So it is a good time to reflect on learning and the teachers who guide our learning. Three of our finest Jewish teachers are Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Our Biblical Patriarchs taught us through their lives and their examples and so do our other teachers. So I thought it would be helpful to ask some members of our community to tell us about special teachers in their lives. Abram Kronsberg (Chizuk congregant, KSDS & Netivon Alumni parent) said this about his fifth grade history teacher Captain Ross. “He was special because he liberated my imagination through stories that made it possible for me to visualize why and how the challenges of past events can relate to those of today and how lessons learned from the approaches taken yesterday can provide insight into solving the problems of today. Through this teacher’s ability to tell stories, I imagined the Alps and the elephants and the myriad of problems that Hannibal faced as he attempted to overcome obstacles and to create an empire. How could I apply the lessons of past events to problems that I might face? That teacher persuaded me to put myself in the Continued on Page 2

shoes of someone else so that I might rehearse for the problems I might confront in my lifetime.” Isaac Spokes (KSDS grad and current Netivon Hebrew High School student) said, “A special teacher to me in my time at Krieger Schechter was Morah Reichman. She was an incredible teacher, but also a fantastic role model. She made all her students feel connected to the Hebrew language and spent her time to engage her students in lessons and make them more interesting. Morah Reichman instilled in me values which I will never forget, and gave me a great interest in learning in general. I will always have a place in my heart for her, and she is very near and dear to me. “

613 & Me: It’s a Date
Jakob Wahlberg (KSDS Kindergartner) had a hard time choosing one special teacher. He said, “Morah Di is one of my favorite teachers. Whenever someone is hurt she asks if she can walk them to the nurse. Mrs. Schulman is so special to me because when we make mistakes she helps us and she teaches us things that we never knew before. And I really like Morah Ali because she is so nice and she teaches us Hebrew and about Pesah. Morah Pnina is special because she takes good care of us!”
** Some Fourth graders have already received their B’nei Mitzvah dates but they should wait and experience this program with their classmates.
We are so grateful to all of our teachers who prepare us to meet the challenges in our lifetimes, who connect us to Hebrew and Jewish values, and who help us when we make mistakes. Pirkei Avot teaches – aseh lekha Rav U’kneh lekha haver. Find a teacher and you’ll acquire a lifelong friend. In our congregation and schools we are lucky enough to have many teachers who become friends and enrich our lives with learning.

engage in Congregational LIFE The Many Unsung Heroes of Chizuk Amuno The madrikhim in our B’nei Mitzvah Tutoring Program are among the many unsung heroes of Chizuk Amuno. They are the teens who, after going through training for bar and bat mitzvah in our tutoring program under the leadership of Hazzan Emanuel Perlman and our B’nei Mitzvah Coordinator, Debby Hellman, have been inspired to take on the mitzvah of preparing upcoming students for this Jewish milestone. In addition to tutoring, our madrikhim often chant megillah on Purim and other holidays. Many have learned the special High Holy Day trope to chant Torah on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. Madrikhim can also be seen on the bimah on some Shabbat mornings leading various parts of the service. In 1999, Mark Gober, son of Dr. Robert and Karen Gober, was tutored for bar mitzvah by Rebecca Shualy, an outstanding madrikha in our program. Mark’s grandparents, Sandy and Fred Hittman, were so impressed with Rebecca’s dedication and commitment to his training that they endowed a special fund to honor Rebecca and future madrikhim. Fred and Sandy’s wish was to recognize one of our distinguished madrikhim with a trip to Israel. Rebecca was the first recipient of the Hittman Tutor Award, given out annually to a deserving senior in our B’nei Mitzvah Tutoring Program. This year’s recipient is Melanie Block, one of our most outstanding madrikhim. Many will recognize Melanie for her frequent Torah readings on Shabbat and the High Holy Days, her expert chanting of megillot, and her beautiful chanting of Shirat haYam in years past. It is with gratitude and pleasure that we honor Melanie for her commitment to her many students and dedicated involvement in the life of Chizuk Amuno. We thank Melanie for her service, and will miss her as she goes off to college. We wish her continued success in all her endeavors.
Thank You to our Holiday Kiddush Sponsors Our grateful appreciation to the children of Stanley and Lillian Wilen, of blessed memory, for sponsoring two of our Passover Kiddush luncheons in memory of their beloved parents. We are honored to link the names and memories of Stanley and Lillian with our congregation and the meaningful observance of Passover. May their memories forever be a blessing. We also express our appreciation to the Chizuk Amuno Sisterhood for sponsoring a Shavuot Kiddush on this special holiday. We thank our Sisterhood for all they do throughout the year for our congregation and schools. Thank you to these families for hosting guests for Passover Seders: Jeff & Rabbi Marci Aronchick Liba Goldblum & Jay Baraban Rita & Marshall Plaut Miriam & Joel Suldan If you would like to sponsor a Shabbat or Holiday Kiddush in honor or memory of a loved one or special occasion, please contact Jenny Baker at the synagogue.

Joining Communities through Dialogue
On the evening of March 22, approximately 25 members of Chizuk Amuno met with an equal number of members from Union Baptist Church to begin a dialogue. Over the past two years we’ve been evolving our relationship by visiting each other’s congregations for worship, by talking together about joint efforts, and meeting one another to establish personal bonds. That March evening 50 of us gathered to explore common values. Rabbi Shulman and Reverend Hathaway offered warm words of welcome and affirmation. Then, under the direction of Barbara Grochal, attendees divided into groups of 8 to 10 participants, reflecting age, gender, and racial diversity. Each group was led by a facilitator who followed specific guidelines and questions to ensure that conversations were productive. And they were! We learned about one another’s names and backgrounds. We heard from each other about memories of discrimination or feeling like “the other.” We imagined next steps and hopes. All the participants were excited about the experience and eager for what follows. The end result was a comprehensive list of projects and activities that will be used to create future programming for Chizuk Amuno and Union Baptist to carry out together. Our hope is that members of both groups will garner a greater understanding of each other’s cultures and that the relationships sparked at each event will grow into meaningful friendships.

Chizuk AmunO Rabbinic Transition Magnify your engagement Enthusiastic Voices Our Rabbinic Transition Roundtable discussions got off to a great start with over 300 people attending during the month of April. A diverse group of congregants and school parents thoughtfully and enthusiastically shared their vision for our next Senior Rabbi and Chizuk Amuno’s future. The Roundtable discussions were led by our facilitator-consultant, Guy Sapirstein, PhD, an expert in synagogue culture and change-management. Common themes of discussion included: rabbinic engagement and relationships, tradition, continuity, the critical role of our schools in the community, adult education, prayer, music, youth engagement, connection to the larger community, Israel, social justice, and interfaith issues. Participants were representative of the wide range of overlapping demographic groups and interests within our big tent. Discussions were respectful, honest and forward looking with an emphasis on a welcoming and inclusive Chizuk Amuno. It was gratifying to see both lifelong congregants and new members’ passion for Chizuk Amuno and dedication to its future. Our Roundtable discussions have already generated a tremendous volume of information that will inform our Transition Committee as we move forward with our search. This exploration of who we are and who we want to be will be critical in how we approach the applications we receive and the interview process we conduct. We are intent on making sure we have heard from as many stakeholders as possible and strongly encourage those who have not attended a Roundtable discussion to join us for one of our last 3 sessions. Please come and bring a friend or family member and make your voices heard. • Wednesday, May 24th, 7-9 p.m. • Thursday, May 25th, 8-10 a.m. • Thursday, May 25th, 10:30-12:30 p.m. To allow us to best prepare for these events, please RSVP to bit.ly/ChizukRoundtable. Please advise if you will need baby-sitting or transportation services. RSVP’s may also be made to Marci Scher: 410-486-6400. We look forward to seeing you soon!
Congregation and Schools Security Update On a continuing basis, our Security Committee, School Board, Synagogue Board, professional staff, and security consultants discuss and review our security procedures, protocols and plans. The safety of our children, students, members, staff, and guests is our highest priority. As part of our ongoing security review, we have created a secure administration lobby which will serve as our secure vestibule during school hours. Three doors (administration hallway towards the schools, garden lounge, landing door to upstairs) will be locked and buzzed open by the security guard during school hours. Each of these doors will have a key card release for staff use and will open automatically from the inside when approached. In addition, the elevator will be locked with accessibility by the guard during school hours. This new security feature will give our security guards the opportunity to welcome and check in visitors in a secure area prior to opening access to our schools. Thank you for your cooperation and thank you to our House, Grounds, & Security Committee for their continuing review of our security procedures.

Knitting Havurah - Blankets, Scarves, and ... Twiddlemuffs? You may ask, “What is a twiddlemuff?” A twiddlemuff is a device used to provide sensory stimulation for patients with Alzheimers and dementia. These patients often are very fidgety, scratching or pinching themselves, and a twiddlemuff can be used to keep their hands busy. Generally, twiddlemuffs are knitted, crocheted, or sewn from yarns or fabrics with varying textures and have numerous objects attached to them on the outside and the inside such as beads, buttons, charms, ribbons, or rings. Our Knitting Havurah has taken on twiddlemuffs as a new project and will donate them to care units for patients with dementia or Alzheimers. If you would like construction directions or more information, please contact Cheryl Snyderman. If you have notions (buttons, beads, etc.) that you would like to contribute to our cause, we would be most appreciative. Our next session will be on Wednesday, June 21 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Our sessions are enriched with conversation and camaraderie. Knitting instruction is available and everyone is welcome. We delivered the contributions to Paul’s Place and Innterim House, which is a transitional residence for women and their children right here in Pikesville. This year, our Food Drive was included in the promotions for JVC’s Good Deeds Day, which helped to bring in food from outside of the Chizuk Amuno community as well. We also collected almost $50 in monetary donations which was forwarded to Jewish food funds that provide support in combatting hunger. All of the recipients expressed great appreciation for our efforts and we, in turn, thank you. Todah Rabbah to Tamie Flax, Ginnie Kass, and Gail Oppel for their help in checking expiration dates, loading cars, and delivering food to the agencies.

Goldsmith Early Childhood Education Center becomes a member of PJ Goes to School
What is PJ Goes to School? PJ GOES TO SCHOOL (PJGtS) is a program underwritten by The Harold Grinspoon Foundation, and dedicated to enhancing the Jewish content of the early childhood classroom. PJGtS aims to engage families in conversations about Jewish values by using PJ Library books as a catalyst. Schools receive PJ books, related resource guides, and professional development. What happens at our school? • We receive beautiful PJ Library books each month for our classrooms. • We use these books to inspired conversations and play around Jewish concepts. • We live and learn Jewish values.
Goldsmith Early Childhood Education Center was chosen to represent the Baltimore contingency of PJ schools to host a visit from an international contingency of PJ Library educators. On April 25, Harold Grinspoon and a group of 15 educators from Israel, and Mexico came to our school to see a Jewish PJ School in the United States. The children welcomed this group in song and celebration. We proudly showed off our school and felt honored and privileged to have Harold Grinspoon and his foundation visit our school.

Keeping with our commitment to tikkun olam, 1st and 7th graders from Krieger Schechter filled 42 backpacks with food so children from two Baltimore City schools can take them home and feed their families over the weekend.

EIGHT Rosenbloom Religious School Super Heroes Rosenbloom Religious School is blessed to have eight incredible teens as student helpers. Thank you to Liam Asher, Jacob Block, Melanie Block, Seth Hudes, Abby Lerman, Aaron Sterling, Noe Wolf and Zachary Zaiman, for waking up early every Sunday morning to fulfill the teachings of the Shema: “You shall diligently teach them to your children” We thank them for showing our students that the synagogue is a second home. By their words and actions they make our students feel welcome, cared about and important. Our RRS student helpers are the role models for our kids. They help them improve their Hebrew reading, strengthen their prayer skills, push to new levels in the art room, learn Israeli dances, and build community in the gym. These teenagers take their responsibilities seriously and many of our students can’t wait to see and spend time with them. Maybe one day the children they teach will become student helpers too!
Achshav Students Welcome Their Public and Private School Friends to Chizuk Amuno On Tuesday, March 28, our 9th grade Achshav students welcomed their friends to their Tuesday night program. They utilized the leadership skills and Jewish knowledge that Achshav cultivates to plan a full evening of activities for their friends. The visitors learned the Aleph Bet, tested their knowledge with a Judaism 101 Kahoot (computer game), discovered the most important places in the synagogue via a scavenger hunt, heard the Exodus story and celebrated Passover through a chocolate seder, and finished with a sing-along featuring Achshav students on the ukulele leading Matisyahu’s “One Day.” It was a memorable evening of learning, leadership, and laughter!
Achshav 11 and Netivon celebrate a weekly commitment to Jewish learning with a trip to the Big Apple.
