RABBI’S COLUMN Let me tell you part of the narrative of Chizuk Amuno Congregation. It is a narrative that RABBI DEBI WECHSLER you might not see if you mostly find yourself in the Main Sanctuary on Shabbat or the High Holidays.

Last Shabbat I saw the most beautiful thing at shul. Taking advantage of a quiet Shabbat in the Main Sanctuary I was able to spend some quality time in our two other Shabbat sanctuaries.

First I went to Rabbi Seltzer’s Family Service where he had more than 50 children and adults engaged in a joyous Shabbat and Rosh Hodesh service. A first time visitor to the service exclaimed to me, “His joy is so contagious. He’s excited so the kids get caught up in it too.” She was delighted that on his first visit to Family Service, her son helped lead the Amidah and was invited to open the ark. I also saw one of our Rosenbloom Religious School six year olds read Torah for his third time, and a Krieger Schechter second grader have his 49th Aliyah to the Torah. Sometimes I even get special invitations to share a few words about the Torah portion as I did last week. The chapel on Shabbat mornings is a place that pulses with the joy of Shabbat and Jewish learning and I love when I can be a part of that spirit.

Hacking into the Haggadah With Rabbi Ron Shulman Tuesdays, March 21 & 28, 7:30 p.m.

Hacking is about gaining access, in this case we want access in order to better understand the text of the Haggadah.

As we prepare for Passover we also want access to all that’s hiding in the Haggadah so we may use it to create engaging Seder celebrations with family and friends.

Collaborative Conversation with Members of Union Baptist Church Wednesday, March 22, 7 – 9 p.m.

Members of the congregation have voiced interest in having interfaith/ interracial dialogue. Through relationships between members of our clergy and the Senior Reverend at Union Baptist Church, a small group have been exploring opportunities. Under the facilitation guidance of Barbara Grochal, “Joining Communities through Dialogue” will be held at Chizuk Amuno March 22 from 7 – 9 p.m. The evening will entail small facilitated group discussions with members of both congregations.

Next I made my way down to Michelle Gold’s Torah for Tots in the Esterson Auditorium. Here I was greeted with a hearty “Shabbat Shalom!” While Michelle engaged our littlest Shabbat attenders, I saw grandparents and parents tossing their children up in the air for yismechu, a mother nursing a three week old while a father chased down an older sibling, and a curly haired toddler holding a shema finger. But the most amazing part of it was that more than 50% of the children at Torah for Tots were second or third generation Chizuk Amuno students. One grandmother said to me, “I can’t believe I am here with my granddaughter! It feels like I should still be here with my own kids.” Except that the kids were grown and married with kids of their own. How beautiful it was to see parents who themselves had been Chizuk USYers, Chavurah students, Krieger Schechter and Netivon students and are now bringing their own babies and toddlers to celebrate Shabbat with us!

While usually it is at a Bat Mitzvah or an aufruf that we see the passage of time at shul, last Shabbat it was the weekly moments of coming together for prayer that showed off the generations at Chizuk Amuno. It is Shabbatot like that one which make me so hopeful for the future of our community.

ENGAGE IN CONGREGATIONAL LIFE & Learning 613 & Me: Beneath the surface

Seeing The Wiz with Union Baptist Church Sunday April 2, 3 p.m.

Murphy Fine Arts Center Morgan State University Union Baptist Church, through its affiliate, The Beloved Community Services Corporation, is sponsoring a performance of The Wiz.

Eleven mother-daughter pairs went “Beneath the Surface” of becoming Bat Mitzvah with Rabbi Wechsler last month. Pairs shared treasured family rituals, explored the sanctuary and created their own unique Jewish rituals as part of a process of preparing to become Bat Mitzvah. Mothers used their own personal experiences to help mentor their daughters and daughters took hold of their own shared coming of age ritual to bring more meaning to the experience.

We are grateful to the Sisterhood for their continued support of our 613 & Me: Beneath the Surface program.

Eight young men and their fathers joined with Rabbi Shulman last month to explore the Bar Mitzvah experience as an important step in passing along family heritage and Jewish identity from father to son. Through exploration of their roles and values, sharing of their memories and expectations, in dialogue with one another, learning about Jewish rituals for men, and in group study these fathers and sons went beyond typical preparation to discover something more of the meaning and purpose of becoming a Bar Mitzvah and of being a Jewish man. The group enjoyed new and renewed friendships and look forward to their upcoming celebrations.

Lunch and Learn In January the intrepid Downtown lunch and learners from University of Maryland Medical System and Johns Hopkins Hospital and the surrounding area studied the topic of tochecha (difficult conversations) with Rabbi Debi Wechsler. Our adults engaged in the mitzvah of talmud torah (Jewish learning) while enjoying kosher bag lunches made by Chef Annie.

ROSENBLOOM RELIGIOUS SCHOOL - Journeys in Jewish Education God said to Abram, “Go Forth!” And Abram did. Journeying has always been part of our history and our tradition. A journey to another place is always a search and discovery, not only about that place, but about who we are as a people. We seek to be at home in the world and in ourselves, as Jews.

Rosenbloom Religious School, Achshav and Netivon have always been practitioners of this adventure in discovery and exploration outside the classroom. Experience is the best teacher. Think about what you remember from school, often it’s the play you were in, running for student government, or one of your favorite field trips. These experiences last for a lifetime and should go hand-in-hand with classroom learning. Not only do the field trips make the classroom material relevant and personal, but they build strong bonds between students, and students and teachers, plus they are adventurous and fun.

Our 6th grade students traveled to the Center for Jewish Education, where they partnered with special needs students from Gesher L’Torah for ice-breakers, a service project, and pizza as part of the CJE’s B’More Inclusive program.

Our 5th grade students actualized the mitzvah of “Baal Taschit,” caring for the environment, by volunteering to clean up Hanlon Park through Jewish Volunteer Connection.

Our 2nd grade students traveled to the Science Center Planetarium to learn about the moon, its cycles, and its relationship to the Jewish calendar.

After 6 weeks of study on contemporary Israel, our Achshav and Netivon students will travel to D.C. for the 2017 AIPAC Policy Conference.

In celebration of their year-long commitment to Jewish High School learning, in April, our Netivon students will travel to New York City for a bike ride in Central Park, a play, and dinner.

Our Achshav students will also be going to New York City to cheer on marchers at the Celebrate Israel Parade.

And last but not least our Achshav 9 students will have their first meeting to prepare for their Israel trip in December 2017.

GOLDSMITH EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CENTER: HAVDALAH IN PJ’S by the Campfire

On February 4, nearly 100 children, parents and grandparents came together to celebrate Havdalah in our PJ’s.

Rabbis Wechsler and Seltzer, Melissa Berman (Young Families Coordinator), and Michelle Gold (Director of Goldsmith Early Childhood Education Center) led the group in a child-friendly

Havdalah around the “Campfire.” We used our senses to welcome the new week. First we drank the wine, then we smelled the spices and then we saw the light of the Havdalah candle. We each had an opportunity to manipulate wax to create our own Havdalah candle and put it in our Havdalah bag with our spice bags and berachot, so we can do Havdalah at home.

What better way to end the night then around the campfire eating S’mores.

It was a frigid February night, perfect for cooling the chicken before loading it onto the delivery truck. Under the focused leadership of our own Chef Annie and helpers Leonard Martin and Charles Perry, our dedicated corps of volunteers prepared a huge quantity of chicken – washing, dressing, moving cartfulls from the ovens to outdoor tables and loading them onto the van heading for Our Daily Bread. Special thanks go to Marvin Spector for working behind the scenes to make sure everything was in order.

Sisterhood members have been busy getting ready for Purim and making Hamantaschen. Our Hamantaschen fundraiser proceeds will go toward the 2017 Krieger Schechter STEAM fair in the fall and other Rosenbloom Religious School and Goldsmith Early Childhood Education Center projects and programs. Sisterhood did such a great job baking last year, that we are also providing the Hamantaschen for the synagogue’s needs during the Purim holiday.

What’s happening for passover preparing for pesah Pot Kashering Monday April 3, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Certain types of metal flatware and cookware may be koshered for Pesah by a method of boiling called hag’alah.

Rabbi Wechsler will assist you in this annual preparation for Pesah.
