THIS MONTH HaHodesh

AT CHIZUK AMUNO CONGREGATION AND SCHOOLS Engaging Jewish Life & Learning SEPTEMBER 2017 | Elul / Tishri 5778

RABBI’S COLUMN As promised in my last column, I’d like to share with you some ideas and plans for this coming RABBI DEBI WECHSLER year. My focus will primarily be in five areas which I hope will enable us to have a rich, robust communal year of programming and also position us to be our best possible self for when we engage a new rabbi. I am deeply appreciative of the important work that so many are doing during this transitional year. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about transition and I’d like to identify some of our initiatives. 1. My primary goal is maintaining the offerings and services of Chizuk Amuno in the way we all expect. I am delighted to partner with Rabbi Schneider and Hazzan Perlman to ensure continuity and institutional memory during the transition. 2. The next area of interest will be that of prayer and Shabbat Services. It is important that we engage in multiple modes of prayer and explore some exciting new offerings in Jewish music this year. To that end we’ve engaged a Rosh Shirah (song leader) about whom you’ll read in this bulletin. We’ve also invited some Shabbat guests so we can experience different rabbinic models. 3. My third goal is to increase lay involvement. I’m so gratified by those who already responded Continued on Page 2

Welcome sam blustin as our ROSH SHirah We delighted to welcome Sam Blustin as our Rosh Shirah (songleader) for the 2017-2018 year. For Sam, music has always been a big part of life. From singing in choirs to serving as Rosh Shirah at Camp Ramah in Wisconsin, he combines his passion for music with Judaism, opening doors to deeper meaning within Jewish tradition. Sam is also a Rabbinical Student at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York and he is excited to be joining Chizuk Amuno this year as our Rosh Shirah. Sam will be spending a long weekend with us each month from September through May where he will be involved in music in Goldsmith Early Childhood Education Center, Krieger Schechter Day School, and Rosenbloom Religious School. He will also be song leading and leading prayer services for our Shabbat communities. Over the course of these nine weekends with Sam as our Rosh Shirah we hope to provide ruach (spirit) in our congregation and all three of our schools. Our Rosh Shirah is someone who loves to sing, invites others to sing, and brings Jewish music into all aspects of our community. The Rosh Shirah is underwritten by the Rabbi Zaiman Educational Alliance Fund. Sam’s first weekend with us will be September 8-10. Please join us for these programs.

Kavannot for High HOLY DAYS 2017 A sacred community prepares individually and collectively for significant moments on our Jewish calendar. One of the ways we prepare, is by bringing to mind evocative experiences in our Jewish past and hopes for our Jewish future. Several years ago we began a tradition of kavannot which was much beloved by the congregation. A kavannah is intended to be a highly personal short essay. These kavannot will be shared with the congregation by email and social media during the month of September.

Friendly Hosts & Greeters Needed!

From Page 1

to my plea in last month’s bulletin for help and support. I hope even more of you will contact me to get involved in some way in our sacred community. Any rabbi coming to our community will want to see that you are caught up in the mission and vision of the congregation and that we have an intact community of those who are willing to work on its behalf. 4. Next I will be focusing on bringing the individual arms of Chizuk Amuno, in particular its schools, closer together into one cohesive unit. For the health of our schools and our congregation, I think it is vitally important that we move toward one interconnected institutional body. 5. Lastly I hope that together we will be focused on our congregational identity. Let us dream together about what Chizuk’s place is and could be in our Baltimore Jewish community. We know that the demographics have changed, the Jewish community has changed, and we need to understand who we are in the context of our long history and who we aspire to be in the context of our long, bright future. I look forward to seeing you soon!

We need volunteers to serve as hosts for services during the year, both Shabbat and High Holy Days, and as hallway greeters. Please help us greet our congregations and guests warmly. To volunteer, please contact Sheila Sandbank at grandmasheilax2@hotmail.com or 410-484-5016, Fran Glushakow Gould, franny1912@ yahoo.com or 443-691-0133, or Paulette Pollack, in the Synagogue front office at 410-486-6400.

Our Sanctuary is equipped with an audio assistance system to aid in hearing our services. Please see an usher or security guard for a headset.

Development Corporation for Israel / Israel Bonds ISRAEL BONDS – UPGRADES AND UPDATES SUPPORT THE ISRAEL BONDS 5778 HIGH HOLY DAY APPEAL AT CHIZUK AMUNO CONGREGATION Investing in Israel bonds sends a message – a statement that you support a nation that: • Educates, builds, and innovates. • Lives by democracy, liberty and human rights/freedoms for all people. • Produces technologies and innovations that connect, feed, and heal the world (last year The Times of Israel reported, “more than one out of every four of the medicines, treatments and technologies in use today have Israeli roots).” Every investment no matter the amount declares: • Israel is our homeland to develop, visit and protect. • Israel is our heritage, purpose, identity and responsibility. Investment options begin at $100. Current terms range from 2-10 years, all bonds are issued in book-entry form (no certificates) and redemption checks are mailed automatically at maturity. Gift bonds are available too and perfect for simchas or other occasions ($36, $54, $72, $90 – available only online.) You can do a double mitzvah by supporting your synagogue or other Jewish organization

with an Israel bond and even fulfill your Federation or Jewish Agency pledge with an Israel bond. The strength of the Israel Bonds campaign is derived in part from the synagogue’s appeals and Sheila Sandbank will again be chairing the Israel Bonds/Chizuk Amuno Congregation appeal. Again this year: Four Matching Partners Demonstrate Their Support for Israel. Bay Bank and The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore are joined again by The Haron Dahan Foundation and Sandra R. & Malcolm C. Berman, as they continue the 100% match on all Israel Bond investments made during the High Holy Days appeals. Go to israelbonds.com to obtain prospectuses and rates and to set up an online account; you may also call 410-484-6670 x1 or send a message to baltimore@israelbonds.com. Chizuk AmunO Rabbinic Transition Magnify your engagement

On behalf of the Rabbinic Transition Committee, thank you for the tremendous support you have shown for Chizuk Amuno as we transition to our future. Up until now, we have been concentrating on engaging the community to assess who we are as a congregation and what kind of Rabbi we want to lead us into our future. While the engagement will continue, we will now be shifting to the search itself. Because it is critical that our process be transparent and that we keep our entire community informed as we move forward, we hope you will find the following timeline helpful: • November 2016 - Sandi Moffet and Stephen Pomerantz were appointed chairs of the transition and search process by Jason A. Blavatt, President of the Congregation. • January 2017 - The Transition Co-Chairs and President selected a diverse, passionate group of congregants to make up our Transition and Search Committee. Sub-committees were formed for each aspect of the transition and search. We then enlisted the assistance of Dr. Guy Sapirstein, a consultant with a specific expertise in synagogue culture and change management. • April - May 2017 - We conducted lively Roundtable discussions which engaged over 350 members of the community in dialogue about our future Rabbinic leadership. • June - July 2017 - Our Community Survey was conducted, providing another venue for our community to share thoughts and opinions. In excess of 500 surveys were completed, a tribute to our community’s dedication to our future. • July 2017 - Rabbi Deborah Wechsler assumed the role of Transitional Senior Rabbi, assisted by the outstanding team of Rabbi Paul Schneider, Hazzan Emanuel Perlman, Rabbi Moshe Schwartz, Rabbi Stuart Seltzer, Michelle Gold, Dr. Moshe Shualy, and Glenn Easton. • August 2017 - Using the feedback from the Roundtable discussions, community survey, suggestion boxes, emails and other communications, the Rabbinical Assembly (RA) Congregational Questionnaire was completed. Submission of this document in mid August officially listed the rabbinic position with the RA. Applications are expected to begin arriving after the High Holy Days. • Fall 2017- A series of Town Halls will be offered to discuss the results of our engagement process (roundtables, survey etc.) with the community and to allow community members to share additional perspectives. • September 2017- February 2018 - Applications will be vetted by the Transition Committee including thorough reference checks. Qualified candidates will be invited to Chizuk Amuno to participate in services and other communal activities. The entire community will be encouraged to interact with the candidates. Your feedback after each visit will be critical. • Spring 2018 - The Transition Committee hopes to be positioned to make a final recommendation to the Board of Trustee for our new Senior Rabbi in the early spring. The Board, in turn, will then make a recommendation to you, the Chizuk Amuno membership, who will vote to approve or disapprove. The new Senior Rabbi will begin his or her tenure effective July 1, 2018. You are the lifeblood of Chizuk Amuno. Please use this transition period to actively share in and celebrate all that we do together as a synagogue and school community. Please continue to participate in our transition activities and don’t hesitate to contact us personally (search@chizukamuno.org). You can keep up to date on the process by visiting our website www.chizukamuno.org/about/rabbinic-transition/. B’Shalom,

Annual Appeal Campaign Needs Your Support

As we enjoy the last days of summer with family and friends, I hope each of you are eager to experience the breadth of opportunities that Chizuk Amuno is offering for the upcoming year. Like you, I enjoyed time relaxing and traveling, as well as partaking in the many things that make summer fun. I also had the pleasure of working with our clergy and staff to properly prepare for a year of learning, growth, development and opportunity. As we prepare for the High Holy Days, rededicating ourselves as Jews, let us use that energy to also participate in the task at hand, engaging a new Senior Rabbi, so that we can inspire an even brighter future.

All members will receive an invitation to support our Annual Appeal Campaign, our congregation’s only major annual fundraising focus which supports our schools and our congregational programming, provides scholarships and assistance to those with financial need, enables us to enhance our relationships with our members through meaningful contact, expands opportunities for learners of all ages, and helps to balance our lean synagogue and school budgets unable to cover all expenses through membership dues and tuition alone. This year’s Appeal will enable us to enhance our growing preschool, enrich our excellent day school, further develop our new religious school “middle school” and high school programs, boost our adult learning opportunities, and underwrite our congregational programming.

Shanah Tovah Umetukah.

Jason A. Blavatt President

Thanks to your support and support of others, our annual campaign has met and exceeded our goals for the last three years. We invite you to support our campaign at one of the following leadership categories: Visionary - $36,000 and over Sustainer - $10,000 and over Patron - $3,600 and over Donor - $1,800 and over Sponsor - $500 and over

Benefactor - $18,000 and over Partner - $5,000 and over Friend – $2,500 and over Supporter - $1,000 and over Contributor – up to $500

We invite our donors to direct your meaningful pledge, if desired, to one of our schools or general congregational programming and support. As in the past, we will not interrupt the beauty and dignity of our High Holy Day services with a spoken appeal for funds so we invite you to generously respond to the solicitation you will receive by mail.

Reading Partners Newly retired KSDS teacher Rita Plaut reflects on her experience serving as a Reading Partners tutor: “Having been very involved in the Jewish community, I thought it was also important to be involved in the larger Baltimore community. Volunteering with Reading Partners resonated with me because of the opportunity to help young school children improve their reading ability. I was assigned to a third grade boy at the Dallas F. Nicholas, Sr. Elementary School and was very impressed with his interest and motivation. His great attitude helped to make it a special and delightful experience for me. Throughout the time we worked together, it was a pleasure to see how he improved and met his challenges and I enjoyed working with a student from the African American community.”

Reading Partners is a national organization with a presence in several Baltimore schools. This past year, Chizuk Amuno participants provided a total of 212 tutoring sessions serving 10 students, equating to $5,700 worth of professional tutoring. Throughout the entire Baltimore Reading Partners program – 19 schools – 1,000 students were served by 935 community volunteers for a total of 36,521 sessions. Over 18,000 books were distributed to the students for their own home libraries, including several hundred donated by members of Chizuk Amuno. Volunteers are asked to commit one hour a week to help a child with reading. If you have just one hour in your week, you can make a real difference in a child’s success in school and life. The beginning of the school year is the perfect time to get involved! To volunteer or for more information, please contact Fran Glushakow Gould, franny1912@yahoo.com or 443-691-0133.

College Outreach Package Deadline September 1, 2017 Our college students receive gifts of snacks and a greeting from Rabbi Wechsler. ROSENBLOOM RELIGIOUS SCHOOL ISRAEL - 70 Years Young

New Beginnings

70 will be an extremely important and miraculously beautiful number this year for Israel and for the students at Rosenbloom Religious School. Together, with Jews all over the world, our RRS students will look forward to celebrating in April the modern miracle of the 70th birthday of the State of Israel.

On Sunday, September 17, our Rosenbloom 2 - 6 grade students and their teachers will perform the mitzvah of hachnasat orchim or hospitality and welcome their parents to Back to School Morning! The morning will be a great way to build community and give our parents a glimpse into the new year of learning and special activities. It will begin in the classrooms where parents and students will learn together. This will give the parents an opportunity to continue their relationships with our teachers whom they have identified as the hallmark of our school. They know that on any given day in the classroom lives can change and magic can happen. After the parents and students study together, students will have special activities while their parents meet with their teachers.

Various activities throughout the year will engage students in exploring different aspects of Israeli culture and history. The Story of Israel in 70 Objects: The entire school will think up and collect 70 objects that tell the story of Israel. These objects will be displayed in a living museum at Chizuk Amuno and will expand our historical timeline in the Hendler Learning Center. Special guests with a personal connection to Israel will meet with our students and also contribute their own objects that tell the story of Israel. We will collect 70 student wishes for Israel and make our own Western Wall of Wishes for Israel. Our midweek students will learn 70 Modern Hebrew expressions. (like yom huledet sameach L'Yisrael - Happy Birthday Israel!) We will make 70 Israeli flags to adorn the walls of Chizuk Amuno. Each class will choose an Israeli tzedakah organization and collect $70 for them. There will be song writing, stamp design, birthday banner and tee shirt contests. And of course, on Yom HaAtzmaut, we will have a big 70th birthday party that you will not want to miss.

At 10:30 our Kindergarten – 6th grade parents and students will join together in the main sanctuary for a participatory Family Selihot Service to begin the High Holy Day Season. The service will be led by our Chizuk Amuno clergy and introduce our families to the prayers and motifs of the coming Days of Awe. Students will sound the shofar, lead parts, and help change the Torah covers to white to symbolize a new year. The service will conclude with a Welcome Back Brunch, an opportunity to spend time with old friends, make new ones, and wish each other a shanah tovah or a sweet new year!

KRIEGER SCHECHTER DAY SCHOOL Double chai The start of the 2017-18 academic year marks a special time for our Krieger Schechter Day School as we celebrate our 36th anniversary. KSDS was founded in 1981, as part of the The Solomon Schechter Day School Association, and named in recognition of major benefactor, the Zanvyl and Isabelle Krieger Fund. Over the years, KSDS has increased in enrollment and community awareness and now stands as a highly regarded, K - 8 independent school that develops confident, successful, well-rounded students who are independent, respectful, critical thinkers with deep Jewish values.

CELEBRATING 36 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE

We will commemorate our “double chai” anniversary with a year full of celebratory events that are meant to unite and engage our broad, caring KSDS community. Key event dates are listed below. MEET MARIE MOKUBA, FIRST RECIPIENT OF THE MIRIAM FOSS GEMILUT HASADIM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Each year, the Miriam Foss Gemilut Hasadim Memorial Fund awards one graduating senior at Baltimore City College High School a $5,000 scholarship designated for the student’s college tuition. This special Fund also honors Miriam's deep love for Judaism and her and the synagogue's commitment to helping communities across Baltimore City. The first recipient of the scholarship is Marie Mokuba, who will be attending Goucher College in the fall. The scholarship is awarded to a student who has demonstrated a long-term commitment to improving the community and has shown outstanding character. In this spirit, Marie was chosen by the faculty at City College for her involvement in community and social justice work.

SECURITY GUARD UPDATE Our thanks to Jon Krieger and Defender One Security for providing our school and congregation security guards who provide protection and assistance throughout the year. We welcome two new guards, Tyler Grier and Peleg Ovadia (with whom you can speak Hebrew) and welcome back our other security personnel. Please welcome and thank our guards:

Matt Attman

Matteo Cantelmi

Nitai Gafny

Born in Kinshasa, Congo, Marie came to the United States with her family in 2004. When Marie was a freshman at City she joined the debate team and honed her speaking and presentation skills, helping her advocate for disenfranchised communities. Her involvement continued with City Bloc, a student club that fosters dialogue and understanding between teachers and students at the school.

Tyler Grier

Outside of City, she has served as a youth policy organizer for the Baltimore Algebra Project, a youth-led organization that provides math tutoring for students in Baltimore City; interned at Johns Hopkins, assisting a professor who taught a class on the intersection of theater and social justice; and served on the board of the City Youth Fund Task Force, which allocates resources to organizations helping students across Baltimore City. Most recently she completed an internship with the American Civil Liberties Union to discuss civil rights issues with students from around the country.

When asked about the experiences contributing to her involvement in these projects and activities, Marie says she is grateful for her education, which has allowed her to give voice to the individuals and communities that have not had access to the same resources and opportunities she has had. At Goucher she hopes to study peace studies and political science. Congratulations to Maria, and thank you to the family and friends of Miriam Foss (z’l) for their generous and thoughftul support. The Foss family is grateful for all the contributions that have been made to the Fund. If you would like to make a gift, please contact the Chizuk Amuno office for more information. Page 10

Fineman Ethics Lecture to Feature Ron Lieber on “The Ethics of Money” Tuesday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m.

the Stulman Center of Adult Learning at chizuk amuno WELCOMES RACHEL KADISH Author of The Weight of Ink Tuesday, October 24, 7 p.m.

Ron Lieber, New York Times “Your Money” columnist since 2008, will be the featured speaker at our Paul J. Fineman Ethics Education Lecture on Tuesday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m. Author of the bestsellers The Opposite of Spoiled, Raising Kids Who Are Grounded, Generous, and Smart About Money, and Upstart Startups, A Guide for Young Entrepreuners, Ron will speak on “The Ethics of Money.” Before coming to the Times, he wrote the “Green Thumb” personal finance column for The Wall Street Journal and spent 14 years at the Francis W. Parker School in Chicago. Mr. Lieber’s book Taking Time Off: Inspiring Stories of Students Who Enjoyed Successful Breaks from College and How You Can Plan Your Own, was a New York Times bestseller by the Amherst College graduate. Established in 1991, the Paul J. Fineman Fund for Ethics Education was created by his wife, children and grandchildren to honor Paul’s memory in a meaningful way. In anticipation of Mr. Lieber’s lecture, each of our three schools will be hosting a book discussion on Ron Lieber’s book The Opposite of Spoiled. Please join us for this special evening which may also be of special interest to teens and young adults.

Please join us on Tuesday evening, October 24 at 7:00 p.m when we will welcome author Rachel Kadish who will discuss her new book, The Weight of Ink and her work as an award-winning author of novels. Set in London of the 1660s and of the early twenty-first century, The Weight of Ink is the interwoven tale of two women of remarkable intellect: Ester Velasquez, an emigrant from Amsterdam who is permitted to scribe for a blind rabbi, just before the plague hits the city; and Helen Watt, an ailing historian with a love of Jewish history. Electrifying and ambitious, sweeping in scope and intimate in tone, The Weight of Ink is a sophisticated work of historical fiction about women separated by centuries, and the choices and sacrifices they must make in order reconcile the life of the heart and mind. Ms. Kadish has appeared on NPR and in the New York Times, and has been a fiction fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts. She has received the John Gardner Fiction Award and the Koret Foundation’s Young Writer on Jewish Themes Award, and was a writer-inresidence at Stanford University. She lives outside Boston and teaches in Lesley University’s MFA Program in Creative Writing. Page 11
