Hag Shavuot Sameah A midrash on the Book of Ruth notes that while all the minor figures of the book treat others justly, doing all that the law requires of them, the major characters are distinguished by their acts of hesed, the acts of loving kindness which go beyond what is demanded by our tradition. The Rabbis, in having us read Ruth on Shavuot, teach us that on the day when we celebrate receiving the laws of the Torah, we need to remember that law, even the law of the Torah, is never enough. We generally say the process of Exodus from Egypt is not completed at the Red Sea but rather it is seven weeks later at Sinai that the process reaches its natural conclusion. The midrash reminds us that the giving and receiving of Torah is also just a part of the process. We are not fully formed as a Jewish nation until we go beyond the Torah of Sinai to a Torah of loving kindness that is the most perfect fulfillment of our mission as God’s chosen people.
