Community Playground – Making Progress

Join with our community to prepare for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.

Our community-build playground project is moving ahead with excitement and great energy! We have assembled a dream team of Team Captains from all parts of our community to organize our volunteers, fundraising, PR, design, and several other areas. We are

We gather to enjoy the sweetness and light of Havdalah following the conclusion of Shabbat.

Renew the Old – Consecrate the New Even as the music I listen to is now digitally recorded - downloaded or streamed onto my RABBI RON SHULMAN devices - I still have my collection of vinyl record albums stored in a cabinet. Good thing because collecting record albums is popular again. Retailers observe that this trend back to vinyl is particularly noticeable among younger consumers. I guess it’s time to dust off my old turn-table! Old form or new, the song matters more than how it is recorded. We listen to and collect the music we enjoy, the songs that touch us. We don’t buy the songs we don’t want to hear. What’s interesting in the revival of vinyl records is that recording artists want to present their new songs in this old fashion. Why? Because “everything old is new again.” ▶ Continued on page 6

9 p.m. Havdalah

Dessert Reception

In friendship and conversation, we’ll join to renew our bonds as a synagogue community before the first “formal” service of the High Holy Day season. Join with our rabbis and your synagogue friends for discussion about how to find personal meaning and spiritual feelings during the High Holy Days. 10 p.m. Selihot Service

Before our service begins, the Torah Scrolls in the ark are publicly changed into their white High Holy Day covers which symbolize the freshness and purity of the coming New Year. ▶ Continued on page 3

“Baltimore after Freddie Gray” Sukkot Symposium, featuring Dan Rodricks Friday, October 2 • 8 p.m. We welcome Dan Rodricks, Baltimore Sun columnist and YPR host, into our Sukkah and community. From his vantage point commenting on and interpreting events in Baltimore, Dan will speak with us about the issues and challenges we need to understand and

respond to in our greater Baltimore community after the unrest following Freddie Gray’s death. Questions of social justice, equality, and human dignity reflect meanings we glean as we celebrate the Festival of Sukkot. One aspect of the Sukkot festival is to gather together in Jewish community and consider shared concerns and needs. Historically, Sukkot was a time of great community meetings. This is the purpose of our Sukkot Symposium, to honor the holiday we celebrate by caring for the welfare of our people throughout the world. Mr. Rodricks will speak after our community Shabbat Hol HaMoed Sukkot dinner. Those not attending the dinner are welcome to join us for the presentation.

A String Quartet will accompany Hazzan Perlman and the Chizuk Amuno choir during our Selihot Service. Selihot is a unique and moving late night “Service of forgiveness” that begins the High Holy Day season. The Selihot Service is an emotional, spiritual, and evocative evening of teshuvah, repentance, reflecting upon our deeds and experiences this year as we consider personal and religious goals for future growth and change. We will read and recite the prayers and reflections of our Selihot Service that evening from Mahzor Lev Shalem. During the Selihot Service we are introduced to some of the prayers and motifs of the coming Days of Awe. We conclude our evening with the sounding of the Shofar.

Support the Israel Bonds 5776 High Holy Days Appeal An Israel bond investment says you stand with Israel – a country that educates, builds, and innovates; a nation that lives by democracy, liberty, and human rights/freedoms for all people. Each investment rejects the BDS (Boycott, Divest, Sanction) movement and enables the development of a country known for producing technologies and innovations that connect, feed, and heal the world. Your support for Israel Bonds will help Israel maintain its economic strength and grow its accomplishments. This year, there four matching partners which will ensure that every dollar invested will continue to become two dollars toward helping Israel. On Rosh HaShanah, please join congregation members across the country by purchasing an Israel Bond. For more information, contact Sheila Sandbank, 410-484-5016 or grandmasheilax2@hotmail.com.

▶ From Rabbi Shulman, from page 1

The same is true in synagogue life. At Chizuk Amuno we sustain much that is familiar and traditional. We also do a lot that is innovative and designed to touch us in new ways. Some of us are searching for something new. Others of us are newly discovering old traditions. “The old shall be renewed and new shall be consecrated,” taught Rav Abraham Isaac Kook, the first pre-State Chief Rabbi in Israel. What matters most to me as your rabbi, and I hope to you who are participants in the life of this synagogue community, is that we record and hear meaningful messages, participate and share in experiences that engage us as Jews. To accomplish this we need to develop deeper relationships with each other, appreciating and celebrating the personalities and backgrounds of we who form our synagogue family. Today a synagogue must be a place that values us as individuals above all else and mediates personal meaning for each and every one of us through the Jewish celebration and learning we enjoy together. This is an important refrain, one I’ve suggested many times before. It reflects the core principles that guide me as a rabbi. I believe that the needs of the people in our synagogue community come first, before the needs of our synagogue institution. I believe in equality among and between all of us. I believe in fostering an inclusive and welcoming community. I believe integrity must attach to everything we do. I believe the Judaism we teach and represent must be authentic. I continue to hold on to this core set of values just like I still have my collection of vinyl record albums. At a time when we look back in order to move forward, the start of a new Jewish year feels like a good time for me to dust them off and replay them. A Hebrew folk song reminds us: “The days pass and the years turn, but the melody always remains.” Robin and I wish you and yours a year of goodness, health, and peace. L’Shanah Tovah, Rabbi Ron Shulman

so gratified that congregants and school parents have been coming out of the woodwork to pledge their help and expertise to the project. Our treasured but worn KSDS playground has already been demolished and now we are gearing up for a big Design Day on Wednesday, October 7, when students and teachers will work together with our professional designers to create our initial playground plans and drawings and a big community reveal and celebration are planned for that evening. We will continue with art and fundraising projects in the fall, winter, and spring as we prepare for the big community build in May! Contact us at playground@ksds.edu to get involved.
