Rabbi’s Column Welcome to 2016! A year we greet differently than we expected. A year RABBI RON SHULMAN we enter into more afraid than we anticipated. Responding emotionally to acts of terror, we hear incendiary rhetoric in this year of national debate and election. What we need is the conviction to live according to our values and beliefs. Individuals and groups who wish to harm us can’t undermine the freedoms we enjoy in our society. They can’t win a war of ideas with their hatred and irrational faith. They can scare us, however, with their callous acts of violence. Terrorists earn their title because their only accomplishment is to make us afraid. We feel terror and sadness watching the news of victims and grief. In response, social science teaches us. When we remember what we value most and when we honor our best instincts and beliefs we look to the future with greater confidence. We respect the responsibilities that come with our freedoms. We look out for one another. We express our hopes to greet health, compassion, and goodness in the travels and travails that will be our experience in the weeks and months ahead. Have You Joined Our Secure Online Community? ChaverWeb Soon to Include Synagogue Directory
Over 500 congregants have joined our secure online synagogue community called ChaverWeb. Once registered, members can update their family’s demographic information, make contributions, check their account balance, and will soon be able to search online for a fellow member with an online membership roster. Beginning in the spring, members will be able to search our membership roster online to find other members, home phone numbers, addresses, and e-mail addresses. Members may opt out of the ChaverWeb roster completely or restrict the type of information that is to be shared. We will not be including children or student names in the searchable roster. Future uses of ChaverWeb will include school registration, Wings of Memory submissions, and expanded event registrations. To receive a new invitation to join ChaverWeb or to opt out of the online roster, please contact Marci Scher at 410-486-6400 or e-mail mscher@chizukamuno.org.

A Rosenbloom Religious School Thanksgiving Celebration with Grandparents and Special Friends
Thanksgiving provides the opportunity to come together with family and friends. This is also a key Jewish value; as we emphasize community and family we design our celebrations and rituals around opportunities to come together. For the second year, Rosenbloom Religious School has embraced this important Jewish and Thanksgiving value by designating the Sunday before Thanksgiving to be Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day. On November 22, the religious school was filled with students and their special guests participating in intergenerational learning and social action projects. Adults and children worked together to make blankets for the sick, decorate boxes of snacks for firefighters, design centerpieces for the Weinberg Assisted Living Hanukkah party, cook dog biscuits for the Humane Society, bake brownies for the Ronald McDonald House, and prepare toy bags for a hospital in Ashkelon. Through their learning and projects, students and guests alike had the opportunity to think more deeply about our responsibilities to our community, and the responsibility we have to help make the world a better place. The morning finished with a musical performance by our students, a delicious lunch, and an opportunity for families and friends to take pictures together. We are grateful to the Barbara Leibowitz Lichter and Barry Leibowitz Pathways to Menschlekeit Fund for sponsoring this program and helping us to create such a special morning of learning, celebrating, and social action. We are also so thankful to Lynne Lichtig and our amazing team of volunteers for making the morning happen. What a wonderful way to spend the Sunday before Thanksgiving!
dangers, but we can banish fears.” It is a statement of the realism and optimism we learn from Jewish history and feel in our hearts. In 2016 some of us will mark personal milestones of growth and achievement. Some of us will welcome new life, find new love, and celebrate new happiness. Some of us will overcome illness or difficulty. I pray, may very few of us experience grief and loss. In the fullness of life we experience this year our shared values will bring us close and bind us together. In synagogue community we ask and desire this of each other. May we come together often at Chizuk Amuno to remember what we value most and in confidence honor the heartfelt emotions of our lives. Welcome to 2016! B’Shalom Rav, Rabbi Ron Shulman
Donating Stock to Chizuk Amuno Our thanks to the many members who generously donated stock to the congregation before the end of the year to take tax advantage of donating appreciated securities. Instructions for donating stock to Chizuk Amuno and Schools throughout the year can be found in the “Giving” section of our website. If you have recently donated stock and have not received a formal letter of appreciation and donation amount, please contact Susan Bernstein in our accounting office. Unfortunately, stock proceeds often arrive at the synagogue without any identification of the donor. We liquidate all stock when it is received, and a confirmation letter is sent to the donor following the sale. Our thanks also to Tim Hando and the staff of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney for their work on our behalf. There are great tax advantages to donating appreciated stock directly to the congregation before the end of the year. For additional information and stock transfer instructions, please call Glenn Easton or Lesley Brinton at the synagogue office, 202-362-4433. (Please do not call Morgan Stanley directly.)

Reflections from volunteer Gefen Nusinov What started off as a Bat Mitzvah project has now become a long-term commitment and passion of mine. A year ago, I began volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House in Baltimore City. Every month, I lead a craft activity for the sick children who live there while seeking treatment at local hospitals. I have also sewn five fleece blankets for new residents who come from all over the world, and I raced in the annual 5K Red Shoe Shuffle and raised over one thousand dollars for the Ronald McDonald House. I distinctly remember my first visit to the center. Not knowing what to expect, I brought paintbrushes, colorful paints, and wooden picture frames to decorate. It did not take long for about ten residents and their siblings to gather around the table with me and begin painting. There were kids of all ages. One girl from Puerto Rico particularly sticks out in my mind. She is my age, and she was born with one leg significantly shorter than the other. Every few months, her grandparents travel to Baltimore with her to continue treatment. We got along very well and started talking about our hobbies, siblings, and art. I often think about her and how strong she is. It always feels rewarding to help the children of the Ronald McDonald House get their struggles off of their minds—even for just a little bit of time. I enjoy brainstorming craft ideas to bring to the House and look forward to meeting new children every time.

If you would like to receive a full copy of Gloria’s reflections, please contact Melissa Halpern at mhalpern@chizukamuno.org. Below is a few excerpts to honor Gloria’s devotion to and pride in Chizuk Amuno Congregation.
Hebrew Name Carnival SUNDAY, JANUARY 10
Our Kindergarten and first grade families come together to explore their Hebrew names through carnival games and activities. Do you know the significance of your Hebrew name?
Stars and Sprinkles SATURDAY, JANUARY 30
As three stars appear in the sky, our third grade superstars lead their families in Havdalah and celebrate their Hebrew reading skills with an ice cream sundae bar.
Netivon and Achshav Our over 80 Netivon and Achshav students in grades 8-12 will continue to meet on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30. Highlights of the program include special guest educators, meetings with our Israeli Baltimore/Ashkelon Partnership ambassadors, and Israel High, an Israel advocacy program sponsored by the Center for Jewish Education and Jerusalem University. During the spring semester, students can also look forward to Israeli movie nights, NYC trips, and leadership training opportunities.

Many beautiful memories and ineffable experiences have characterized my lifelong affiliation with our beloved Congregation and helped to shape my life. My parents, Benjamin and Miriam Kolker, of blessed memory, hosted Passover Seder in our home at 821 Lake Drive, every year. They always invited our esteemed Rabbi Adolph Coblenz, from Chizuk Amuno, to officiate at our family Seder. The Young Judaica Club at Chizuk Amuno enhanced my activities and helped to open the windows of my mind. I served as President of the club and participated in many declamation and oratorical contest, in which I represented Chizuk Amuno. In 1945, Rabbi Adolph Coblenz officiated at my wedding, which was held at the Belvedere Hotel. I married Morton Hack, of blessed memory, a hero of World War II, who had just received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy. Years later, our three children, Nancie, Steven and Joanne graduated from Chizuk Amuno Congregational Schools and also
became B’nei Mitzvah at our shul. Many photographs of Chizuk Amuno activities fill my albums. I cherish the pictures taken in 1956, when my Mother, brothers, Rabbi Israel Goldman, Chazzan Alba Weisgal, and I helped to dig ground for the first phase of our new synagogue complex on Stevenson Road. In 1964, in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary, my parents donated an antique silver Megillah Case and Purim scroll to Chizuk Amuno, which is now displayed in the museum in the lobby of the sanctuary. The “Kolker Youth Center” was our major gift to Chizuk Amuno. The dedication ceremony was conducted by Rabbi
Groundbreaking ceremony for the third segment of the Stevenson Rd campus held on March 12, 1967. Photograph shows Irving Grant with shovel and Hazzan Abba Weisgal looking at the hole in the ground, Gloria Hack featured in background.
