RABBI’S COLUMN
5TH ANNUAL
The Torah of Zionism At the AIPAC conference some weeks ago, I attended a special session for rabbis. RABBI RON SHULMAN 750 of us from all religious streams of Jewish life sat together over lunch to think about some of the challenges confronting Israel right now. As we were listening to the speakers and talking among ourselves, a friend of mine observed that this occasion was notable for bringing together such a large and diverse gathering of rabbis who represent the full variety of ideas and practice in contemporary Judaism. He then commented wistfully, “and we came together to talk about politics not Torah.” Political and communal support for the American-Israel relationship is AIPAC’s mission, of course. Yet even in that context, I thought about my friend’s observation. How precious it is to gather in our diversity. How unique is Israel that we form such a broad Jewish community around her in our Zionism and concern, and that within Israel’s borders all forms of Judaism and Jewish identity live. Today there are only two ways we identify as Jews. Through our connection to Jewish tradition and our bond with the history and heritage of the Jewish people. Israeli Jews who are unmoved by Judaism demonstrate their bonds to the ▶ Continued on page 2

Jewish people simply by virtue of their address, their language, and their nation’s culture. As Diaspora Jews we have to make more conscious decisions to find personal meaning in Jewish tradition and/or in belonging to a community of people who support and care for one another as well as for Israel. This is the Torah of Zionism. Understanding that Israel is vital to the Jewish present and future. Recognizing that a democratic Jewish State of Israel is vital within the community of nations. We need to teach this Torah among our neighbors, on college campuses, and to ourselves because discussions about Israel that necessarily focus on difficult and complex political challenges and policies, in their criticisms, so often deny Israel recognition of her legitimacy, accomplishments, and contributions.
In teaching the Torah of Zionism we provide ourselves with a national response to the purposes of Jewish identity. We advocate from our history the reasons for Israel’s security and significance. We advocate for changes within and around Israel. We explain from our experiences, and acknowledging different perspectives, why Israel is important as a Jewish state for the whole of the Jewish people and the world community. In teaching Torah and Judaism we encourage personal meaning and life purpose. We open our Torah to those Jews who want to know it, who seek to discover the joys and ideals of Judaism, who hope to find God in their experiences. Only through living Jewish values and thriving Jewish communities do we transmit Jewish identity and impact society. What you and I celebrate about the Jewish state and about Jewish identity are not values shared by many others. This is why we choose to come together on Israel Independence Day to celebrate Israel at 68. Join us at Chizuk Amuno on May 11th! It’s also why we gather as a synagogue community on so many other occasions to celebrate life through the milestones and markers of Jewish tradition. There are only two ways we identify as Jews. Through our connection to Jewish tradition and our bond with the history and heritage of the Jewish people. For our sake and for the sake of Israel, it is our responsibility to foster both links. So, like my rabbinic colleagues did at AIPAC, whenever we come together let’s talk about politics and Torah. Actually, let’s talk about anything and everything that strengthens our bonds to each other and to the heritage of our people. B’Shalom Rav, Rabbi Ron Shulman

Come sit around a table with 8-10 other students, meet three teachers who will introduce you to three books of the Bible. Study together, interpret together, learn together, question together. Discover your place in Torah! After an engaging hour of learning and discussion, enjoy Shavuot desserts with synagogue friends before Rabbi Shulman’s late night study session which will consider these questions: What’s my connection to Jewish tradition? How do I understand my Jewish identity? What perspectives and experiences guide my attitude toward being Jewish? What are the variety of Jewish options and opinions available to me? Judaism is an interpretive tradition, our heritage to understand for meaning and life purpose. “These and these are the words of the living God,” teach our rabbis. SUNDAY, JUNE 12

IT WAS TRULY A
And what a blast we had! At our Purim carnival, the halls overflowed with kids (and adults) of all ages dressed as their favorite superheroes and Purim characters. We enjoyed a super-tall stilt walker, decorated sugar cookies with – what else? – sugar frosting, and made tiles for the new community playground. Whether it be our traditional carnival games, crazy hair-spray, cotton candy, or letting loose all the sugarinduced shpilkes on the inflatable obstacle course, FUN was the word for the day! And Superheroes saved the day at our Megillah reading! Purim Superheroes, that is. Queen Megillah, Captain Chords, Queen Mensch, Princess Preschool, and Super Ross joined forces to get our groggers back from the evil Count Grogula! Following the Megillah reading, all joined together for treats, kryptonite necklaces, music, building with super-sized blocks, and an auction for the community playground. We give Robin Nesky a great big Kol HaKavod for creating our special Purim shpiel. Stay tuned for next year!
We thank carnival chair extraordinaire, Kristen Katz, for her creativity, amazing commitment, and boundless energy, and for heading up our awesome corps of volunteers!

I LOVE BEING A READING PARTNER by Fran Glushakow Gould
After the recent racial unrest in Baltimore, I wanted to do something that would make a difference. When I heard about Reading Partners, I thought this was something tangible I could do. I started tutoring this past October. Reading Partners has a detailed and clear curriculum, progressing one lesson at a time. The on-site coordinator is very helpful, all of which reassured me since I have little teaching experience. I work with a 6-year old, who, unfortunately, is already reading below grade level in first grade. Approximately 75% of children in 4th grade in Baltimore City read below grade level. Christian is very bright, but distracts easily. When I pick him up from his classroom on Tuesdays, he runs to me with his arms outstretched to hug me. He is wellmannered and polite. And hugely sweet. We work together for 45 minutes a day, once a week. So little time commitment from me – so huge a difference, God willing, in this little boy’s life. Stop me and ask about my experience. I hope you will join me in Reading Partners!!! Reading Partners is a national organization with a Baltimore presence in 14 schools. Volunteers are asked to commit one hour a week to help a child with reading. If you have just one hour in your week, you can make a real difference in a child’s success in school and life. To volunteer or for more information, please contact Cheryl Snyderman. Achshav: Leadership Now at the 2016 AIPAC Policy Conference More than 18,000 supporters of Israel, including 3,000 college students and 800 teens attended the 2016 American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) Policy Conference in Washington DC. Five of those teens were participants in Achshav, Chizuk Amuno and Beth El’s three year program on leadership and Israel studies: Izzy Cohen, Katelyn Flaks, Ethan Harrison, Lauren Losin, and Ethan Swartz. Three of the students received a full scholarship to the conference from the Center for Jewish Education in recognition of their outstanding participation in a special “Israel High” course offered as part of their Achshav curriculum. Congressman Sarbanes praised the teens for not just coming to DC to wave Israeli flags, but to spend two days in classes learning the issues and formulating their opinions. Achshav student Ethan Swartz said: “AIPAC was an amazing and eye-opening experience about everything Israel. From smaller panels talking about Israel’s history to the most people I have ever seen fit in an arena, AIPAC showed me that Israel is important and complicated.” Rabbi Seltzer compared being in the Verizon Center with 1800 friends of Israel as a Sinai moment,
saying: “I felt I was part of something bigger than me.” On their final day they visited the offices of Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara Mikulsky and Congressman John Sarbanes to share their concerns about Iran’s nuclear negotiations, a renewed year U.S. military aid package for Israel, and to advocate for direct negotiations for a two state solution. Chizuk Amuno congregants Nancy Cohen and Jack Zager and Ellen Kahan Zager encouraged our students to speak at the lobby sessions and supported them through the process. “I learned about what I can do as a high school student to help Israel, and information on defending its right to exist.” “It was wonderful to be surrounded by fellow Israel supporters and learn how to advocate in different ways from them. All that mattered was believing in America and Israel’s ability to create a peaceful Jewish state.” For their chaperones, the most important part of the experience was seeing the students feel empowered to advocate for Israel, especially from their trip to Israel last year and during their three years in Achshav. The students said they already looking forward to AIPAC 2017 and doubling the size of their delegation!

ENGAGE WITH SYNAGOGUE FRIENDS
Why Sisterhood?
When asked why I got involved with Sisterhood, I thought...Why not Sisterhood!? This group of dynamic women of various ages is doing an amazing job of doing fun as well as doing good. I was so impressed with our incredible gift shop & the amount of money it raises. The ladies were both encouraging & supportive with the Hamentaschen make & bake sale & I look forward to continuing it. The leadership of Dixie & Ruth has been both warm & welcoming. I was excited to support their efforts in helping our Shul, as well as our schools.

SUNDAY BRUNCH WITH DAVID GREGORY On April 10, over 350 people attended a morning of brunch, mingling, and listening to David Gregory share his personal and professional journey with us. He discussed his views on various religious traditions, and how we can better understand our own faith, and answer life’s most important questions: who do we want to be and what we believe.
