Join Me in My Sukkah Extra joy. That’s the best part of Sukkot. The heady, cerebral joy of Rosh HaShanah becomes whole RABBI Debi Wechsler body happiness just a few days later on Sukkot. The extra measure of joy is Biblically mandated as the Torah commands us V‘samahta be hagekha ve hayita akh sameah. “You shall hold the Feast of Booths for seven days … you shall rejoice in your festival … and you shall have nothing but joy.” (Devarim 16: 1315) Nothing but joy is a pretty tall order, but one that Sukkot delivers on with its piney fragrance from the leafy covering, its lemony etrog, its star filled nights, curious visits from neighbors, its spicy stews and onepot dishes, loud chortles from guests, and years of family memories within two and a half walls. Clearly I’m partial, and Sukkot has surpassed Pesah as my favorite Jewish holiday. Sure – the timing could be better, but there’s not much I dislike about Sukkot other than pine needles in my soup. This year my family and I would like to invite you to celebrate my ▶ Continued on page 4
On Simhat Torah, we will conclude reading the Torah and begin reading it anew. The honor of being called to the Torah for the concluding aliyah of the year and the honor of being the first aliyah of the new reading cycle are considered very precious on Simhat Torah. Reflecting the loving relationship of God and the Jewish people through Torah, the congregants called upon for these honors are referred to as Hatan (Groom) Torah and Kallat (Bride) Bereishit.
Warren Gould Hatan Torah After spending 37 years active in the Metro DC Jewish community, Warren moved to Baltimore almost 7 years ago and immediately entrenched himself in life here at Chizuk Amuno. He has served on Brotherhood’s board of directors since 2011 and is especially noted for his tireless work managing Brotherhood’s American Red Cross blood drives. He has increased the frequency from two drives per year up to five or six and garnered recognition from the Chesapeake-Potomac Region of the Red Cross for being the 2013-2014 Blood Drive of the Year. He has engaged and promoted speakers
Ann Betten Kallat Bereishit In 1990, Ann made a career jump from commercial banker to landscape designer. And boy, are we happy she did! Ann has been a member of our House Committee for several years and her contributions to Chizuk Amuno are countless. She designed the entrance feature at Garrison Forest Cemetery and co-designed our newly-dedicated Holocaust Memorial in our courtyard gardens. When it was time to repair the front walk at the chapel entrance, Ann helped the committee turn their ideas into designs on paper. Over the past 3 years, she has been involved with the design and

Special Congregational Meeting Regarding By-Laws Wednesday, October 28 • 7:15 p.m. At the 144th Annual Congregational Meeting in June, the proposed By-Laws amendments did not receive the required two-thirds votes for adoption. Three By-Laws amendments are being presented for consideration at this special meeting on October 28. A copy of the proposals will be sent to the congregation. For a complete set of “redlined” By-laws, please contact the synagogue office.
Engage in Jewish Life
A Message from Andy Miller, Chizuk Amuno Congregation President Face to Face: the Community Engagement Partnership What is your story? What are the things that matter most to you, the memories and experiences that come to mind when you think about your life and
the life of your family? In our synagogue community, we share moments of joy; celebration of milestones; moments of profound loss and sadness; moments of awakening and understanding; moments when we come together to study and to learn, to sing, to pray, to teach our children, to break bread, to help others in need. Almost everything that is sacred in our tradition takes place in the context of community and is expressed through our relationships. What we seek above all is meaningful connection with others who understand who we are, where we come from, and what matters to us. Every one of us has a story. This year, Chizuk Amuno is participating along with other Baltimore synagogues in a community effort with support from the Associated in partnership with the Kolker-Saxon-Hallock Family Foundation and the Darrell Friedman Institute. This effort, the Community Engagement Partnership, is about creating deeper and more meaningful relationships among our members. We have a team of volunteers who will contact our members and invite you for small-group discussions or one-on-one conversations at a time that is convenient for you. These conversations are opportunities for all of us to tell our stories, to communicate what really matters to us, to express our concerns and talk about our dreams, to envision what we can do together as a community. Out of these conversations, we hope to draw some common themes that will help us create something that enriches the lives of our members and the life of the community. This may be a new way of learning together, or creating experiences for our families and
Page 2
our children, or working together on behalf of social justice. We don’t yet know exactly where these conversations will lead. That is for all of those who choose to participate to figure out. What we do know, as Rabbi Shulman pointed out on Rosh HaShanah, is that people find meaning and relationships when they do something together with others who share their interests and their passion. Initial contacts will be made with families that have school aged children, however we welcome the participation of anyone who wants to join in one or more of these conversations. Just let us know you are interested – we will get in touch and share more details with you. If you would like to work with us as one of the volunteers in this effort, please let us know that as well. You can send an e-mail (or a written note, care of the congregation office) to Stephani Braverman, stephbraverman@ gmail.com, Cheryl Snyderman, csnyderman@ chizukamuno.org, Rabbi Shulman, rshulman@chizukamuno.org, or Andy Miller, president@chizukamuno.org. We look forward to sharing our stories together.

for Brotherhood’s breakfast series and graces our congregation most weeks on Shabbat with his spirit and participation. Warren’s commitment to the Jewish community is extensive, bringing his marketing and communications skills as a volunteer for the United Jewish Appeal, Miracle Mission (a DC-wide mission to Israel), and the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, and also in a professional position at B’nai B’rith. We thank Warren for his behind-the-scenes work that helps to make Chizuk Amuno a sacred community. ▶ From Ann Betten, from page 1

The 22 trees planted on Stevenson Road and along our main drive represent the first phase of this project to help protect the Chesapeake Bay. Members since 1994, Ann and her husband, Alan, have two children, Leah and Sam, who are both graduates of Goldsmith and Krieger Schechter. Thank you, Ann, for all you do on our behalf and kol hakavod on a job well done!

Brotherhood Needs You Zakhor HaYeladim • Remember the Children Chizuk Amuno Brotherhood hopes you will join them in the mitzvah of reciting Kaddish and lighting a yahrzeit candle for a child murdered during the Holocaust. More than 1.5 million children were murdered by the Nazi regime and most had no family members left behind to recite the memorial prayer for them. You will be provided with a fact sheet about a specific child and a list of upcoming Yizkor/Yom HaShaoh dates when you are asked to recite Kaddish. Contact Eric Beser for more information.

The parents and children at Goldsmith Early Childhood Education Center (as well as the Chizuk Amuno staff and friends from the neighborhood) always look forward to the big trucks, a motorcycle, a fire truck, police car, special snacks, and our all-time favorite – the helicopter. We will have the opportunity to steer, climb, and explore all of these vehicles, but this year we don’t have to wait until the spring. Every year, we know it will be an amazing day thanks to the Goldsmith Early Childhood Education Center Parent Association. We are always in search of new types of transportation vehicles for our special day. Perhaps you have a “connection” to a specialized type of vehicle… a cement mixer, tow truck, pet grooming van, or any other exciting and interesting mode of transportation. If you do, please contact Karli Ross at karligd@gmail.com.
