Meeting through Text
The workplace has the water cooler. The high school has the lunch room. European cities have the town square. Jews have text. We often use our sacred scriptures as a meeting ground of sorts – a gathering point where we come together from diverse locations to discuss, to argue, to forge friendships, and to figure out where we fit in. We meet across a page to let the text speak to us and for us to speak to the text. Throughout many years of Jewish learning, I have enjoyed getting to know people of different religions and streams of Judaism through the lens of Torah study. At times our differences melt away in a shared love of study and a similarity of approach to the material. At other times, those differences are heightened by vastly different readings and understandings of the text in front of us. For all these reasons I have invited two colleagues and friends to join me at Chizuk Amuno for an evening of “Texting Together” – Rabbi Etan Mintz of B’nai Israel: The Downtown Synagogue and Rabbi John Franken of Bolton Street Congregation. On Wednesday, February 4 at 7:30 p.m. the three of us, from three different congregations and ordained from three different Jewish denominations, will meet each other across and through the study of traditional texts. Using the format of traditional study, prior to the program there will be an opportunity to study the text together in hevruta (pairs or small groups) in preparation for the rabbis’ discussion at 7:30. It is our hope that through understanding how we read text, we engage with each other and build bridges.
A Retrospective on Jewish Music The Sabbath of Song – Shabbat Shirah Friday, January 30 Kabbalat Shabbat Service • 6:15 p.m. Dinner • 7 p.m. Concert • 8 p.m.
E
ach year the Jewish calendar calls our attention to the week our ancient Israelite ancestors rejoiced in song on the banks of the sea following their exodus from Egypt. To mark this occasion, Hazzan Emanuel C. Perlman, T. Herbert Dimmock, and the Chizuk Amuno Choir present a reprise of Jewish musical favorites following a lovely Shabbat dinner. The music will range from the lively to the solemn, from the participatory to the meditative.
Please plan to join us for a warm and wonderful Shabbat dinner and z’mirot, songs, with friends. Walk-ins for the concert are welcome as well. The cost for dinner is $25/ adult; $15/child under 12; Free/child 4 and under. RSVP online at http:// bit.ly/ShabbatShirah or to ppollack@ chizukamuno.org and we will charge your account.
Playdate Together
Monday, January 19 • 11 a.m.-noon CHIZUK SCHOOLS
VOLUNTEAM WITH JEWISH VOLUNTEER CONNECTION
The Goldsmith Early Childhood Education Center and the Jewish Volunteer Connection have joined forces to create the program, Playdate Together, an intergenerational program for families to sing songs, play games, and interact with the residents of North Oaks. Becky Gordon, our GECEC music teacher, will accompany our students and residents in song. This program provides an opportunity for GECEC
families to get involved, perform the mitzvah of hiddur p’nei zakein, honoring our elders, and teach-byexample the value of service to their children. Our volunteers will also be presenting hand-made crafts created by our preschool students. Volunteering their time is the perfect way to pay tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. on the holiday that commemorates his important contributions. Members of the community are welcome to participate in this touching service project. For more information or to sign up, please contact GECEC parent Lauren Kean, lkean808@gmail.com.

Middle Schoolers Become Latke Chefs flavors! Everyone really enjoyed taking part in the creative process! We played the crowd favorite, Coke and Pepsi, and then staged a donut tasting competition. Students closed their eyes as donuts were brought out to them and they had to identify the flavor of each donut they tasted – and as it turned out – they all had exceptional taste. We had a great time at the Kadima Latke Cook-off and are looking forward to our upcoming events. For more details, please refer to p. 7 of the enclosed Program Guide or contact Chizuk Amuno’s Kadima advisor, Sara, at sfinkelstein@chizukamuno.org. We would love to see everyone there!
Fun Together with Young Families Following the Community Havdalah on December 6, our Young Families participants were treated to a sweet story, Lights Out Shabbat, and enjoyed a yummy dinner and a casual family game night. In December, we also enjoyed a Shabbat lunch with the Torah for Tots and Family Service crowds, sharing a meal, open gym, and time to schmooze. For more details, please refer to p. 8 of the enclosed Program Guide Update or contact Rabbi Marci Jacobs Aronchick, maronchick@chizukamuno.org. We would love to see everyone there!
On December 13, our Kadimaniks (middle school youth group) competed in our Kadima Latke Cook-off! We started with a beautiful Havdalah service to say goodbye to Shabbat. The group was then split into teams. Each team was given basic ingredients, and then got to pick additional ingredients so they could create their own distinct batch of latkes, including chocolate chip latkes, mozzarella latkes (have you ever?), and other awesome 2

Krieger Schechter Day School’s Day of Giving Krieger Schechter’s Day of Giving on Wednesday, November 26, was a tremendous success. Our Lower School students took part in six different service projects. Out in the community, our Middle School students visited three different Weinberg facilities and weatherized the homes of local seniors through CHAI’s Adopt-a-Neighbor Program. Here’s a quick recap of the day by the numbers: • 3 Weinberg facilities with several grateful residents • 6 service projects in-house
• 10 CHAI Adopt-a-Neighbor clients’ homes weatherized and yard work completed • 15 trays of cookies and sweets delivered to first responders • 25 tissue paper flower vases for Eating Together program • 30 flower pots decorated for CHAI Adopt-a-Neighbor program • 30+ decorated placemats for Meals on Wheels clients • 40 caterpillar magnets for Meals on Wheels clients • 52 parent and grandparent volunteers • 400 lunches made for Helping Up Mission • Dozens of home-made cookies and cards sent overseas to support our troops Everyone found it immensely rewarding to take time out before the Thanksgiving break and give back to our community. Our students left the building that day with a true sense of what it means to humbly serve others.
Hanukkah at Chizuk What a beautiful celebration of Hanukkah, beginning with a yummy latke dinner, accompanied by games, song, blessings, and the candle lighting. Almost 200 came out to connect with each other and sing along to the music of
Sam Glaser, who played from his repertoire of English and Hebrew Jewish-themed songs. We ended the evening arm in arm for a touching rendition of Yerushelayim shel Zahav, Jerusalem of Gold, and the Hatikvah.

Thank You Bruce Yaillen and Best Wishes
Bruce Yaillen first came to Chizuk Amuno from Chicago in November ’89 to serve as our controller. At that time, there were only THREE computers among the synagogue administrative offices, with another 18 in the KSDS computer lab. Twenty five years later, between the schools and the synagogue, Chizuk Amuno boasts over 250 desk tops / lap tops / netbooks / iPads. To manage the exponential growth and breadth of our technological systems, Bruce assumed the role of Information Systems Manager about seven or eight years into his tenure here. He oversees, as Bruce says, “just about everything with an electrical pulse, with the exception of the postage meter and the photocopiers.” In addition, at KSDS Bruce has taught parasha hashavua and musical tefillah classes, led the a.m. minyan, and chaperoned the 6th grade Teva Nature Experience. He has substituted as leader of Chizuk’s daily minyan and sings with our a capella choir Kol Rinah. Bruce also leads Shabbat morning services twice a month at Milford Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Bruce has accepted the position of Executive Director at Shir Chadash Conservative Congregation in the New Orleans area. If you would like to make a tribute gift in honor of Bruce and Judy, contributions can be made to the Light-Yaillen Israel Scholarship Fund. While we are very happy about this new opportunity for Bruce, we will miss his gentle approach, his staunch dedication, and his presence in our community. Dear friend, best wishes and we hope to see you soon. Haver, b’hatzlahah u’l’hitraot.

Policy for Late Openings Due To Inclement Weather
In order to better accommodate families and coordinate building usage, when our schools need to open late, both KSDS and GECEC will have either a 9 a.m. start or a 10 a.m. start. We no longer use “one-hour” or “two-hour delay” as our plan. Please call our school hotline, 410-244-1199, check the Chizuk Amuno website, www.chizukamuno.org, tune into WBAL for schedule changes due to inclement weather, or sign up for the school emergency text system. A complete description of our policy can be found on the school webpage. When inclement weather occurs on a Sunday morning, RRS families should check the Chizuk Amuno website.
We’ll also enjoy sweet treats with which to wish each other a sweet week. Come dressed for your evening activities and experience this warm and touching service before you go out or return home.
