Dear KSDS Community,

O

n behalf of the KSDS faculty, staff and students, I thank you for your support of this evening’s Todot event and of Myrna and Ben Cardin. As a newcomer to Baltimore, I am fortunate to have already gotten to know Myrna and Ben. They are true leaders in both our greater and Jewish communities. KSDS embodies so much meaning to so many in our community. It is my privilege as second Head of School to facilitate an unsurpassed commitment to learning. As a leader of KSDS, I am humbled by the accomplishments of Myrna and Ben. They serve as distinguished role models for a school that has consistently created and nurtured future leaders. Everyday, KSDS students of all ages acquire and strengthen their leadership skills, be it by designing and initiating mitzvah projects, helping a classmate, or delivering a speech in front of teachers and peers. Through a challenging, interdisciplinary curriculum and the instruction of dedicated professionals, KSDS strives to develop young leaders who share the same compassion and selflessness personified by the Cardins. Myrna and Ben provide a model of leadership that is gracious, genuine, and honest, and we are blessed to have them as part of our KSDS community. Whether Myrna is dropping off her granddaughters at school or Ben is cheering on the KSDS athletic teams, we are offered a glimpse of their love and support of family. With everything they do there is an aura of decorum and humility that we, as a community, deeply respect. Myrna and Ben, a heartfelt thank you for supporting our school, showing our students that leadership comes in many different forms, and inspiring us to nurture and treasure the leader within us all. On behalf of Rebecca, Raviv, and Danya, let me congratulate you both on being honored at Todot. With much admiration,

Bil Zarch Head of School

Krieger Schechter Day School

I

t is my great privilege, as the Chair of the Krieger Schechter Day School Board, to welcome all of you to Todot... A Celebration of Leadership honoring Myrna and Ben Cardin.

We are all inspired by the high standard that Myrna and Ben set – both through Ben’s role as U.S. Senator representing the state of Maryland and through both of their staunch commitment to Jewish education. Together they exemplify the values that we try each day to inculcate in our children. They prove that it is possible to have a meaningful, engaged life – to leave this world a much better place than you found it through your actions – while maintaining a sense of balance and virtue. Our highest hope is that among the alumni of our Jewish Day School there are future Myrnas and Bens, future leaders who can inspire communities through their example and work so tirelessly to improve the world around them. Enjoy this evening honoring Myrna and Ben and celebrating the wonderful community of KSDS. We are grateful to each and every one of you for the time and effort you put into the support of our community. Without you, we could not accomplish the goals we set for ourselves: to educate a next generation of Jewish leaders, strong in their commitment to faith and tradition and understanding the importance to Judaism of Tikkun Olam. Sincerely,

Mark Neustadt

March 2, 2013 21 Adar 5773 Dear Myrna and Ben,

T

he Talmud teaches that a leader is appointed only after consulting with the community. That’s because a leader must be someone the community respects and admires. A leader must also be a person of the community offering a vision for the community. This evening’s celebration of thanks and leadership honors the Talmud’s instruction. Our Krieger Schechter Day School community admires and respects you. We are proud of your many efforts and accomplishments. We share in the values of Jewish education and celebrating Jewish identity. We join with you in community service and engagement. We thank you for your leadership with and among us, and for your warmth, graciousness, and caring. We also delight in your granddaughters Madeline and Julia who learn here, as we rejoice everyday with all of our Krieger Schechter Day School students who form a vibrant and spirited learning community along with their teachers and administrators. Our many parents and grandparents join with you in appreciating the precious educational experience that is KSDS. To them, as to you, we express our gratitude for supporting Krieger Schechter and believing in our mission. This evening we say thank you for all we share in friendship and community, and for the manner in which you both represent us to others. In the United States Senate and in so many communal settings each of you brings a commitment to social justice, human rights, providing for others and forming genuine relationships. You represent your personal principles and our Jewish ideals with integrity and humanity. The Psalms say it is good to give thanks. It is certainly good to give our thanks to you as we celebrate your leadership, your friendship, and your dedication. Thank you very much! Fondly, Rabbi Ron Shulman

KEVIN KAMENETZ County Executive

On behalf of the citizens of Baltimore County, it is my pleasure to extend my gratitude and congratulations on the occasion of the Krieger Schechter Day School’s Todot Gala celebrating the work and leadership of Senator Ben and Myrna Cardin. For decades, Senator and Mrs. Cardin have enriched countless lives through their service and leadership. They are two of Baltimore County’s hardest working advocates who hold fast to the core values of family and faith in all they do. From her career as a teacher for Baltimore County Schools, to her volunteer work in the community, to her service with Towson University and the University of Maryland, Myrna Cardin has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to service and education. A national leader in Congress, Senator Ben Cardin has made health care, retirement security, the environment, foreign policy, veterans, and fiscal issues some of his top priorities. As a member of the Senate Finance and Budget Committee, the Senator has served Maryland well on the front lines in an effort to solve our current fiscal crisis and continue progress toward domestic job creation and complete economic recovery. Over the years, the contributions of Senator and Myra Cardin have had an immeasurable impact on the region’s Jewish community, Baltimore County, and all of Maryland. I am pleased to extend my congratulations to Senator and Mrs. Cardin on this momentous occasion, and I wish them the best in all the years to come. Very truly yours,

Kevin Kamenetz Baltimore County Executive 400 Washington Avenue | Towson, Maryland 21204-4554 | Phone 410 887-2450 | Fax 410-887-4049 | kevin@baltimorecountymd.gov baltimorecountymd.gov

Mark Neustadt and Beth Pepper are proud to support Todot...A Celebration of Myrna and Ben Cardin and are honored that these two illustrious Marylanders have a place of importance for Krieger Schechter Day School. KSDS is so meaningful to us. It is the place where both of our children, Celia and David, received the educational foundation and grounding in Jewish values that are the cornerstones of their young lives. And it is the place where we formed many of our closest, and now lifelong, friendships. KSDS is truly a gem as well as a unique and essential resource for Baltimore’s Jewish community. We celebrate the vibrancy that the new Head of School, Bil Zarch, brings to the school, and the truly wonderful skill and dedication of the impressive faculty. We are privileged to be associated with KSDS.

More About Krieger Schechter Day School

S

ince 1981, Krieger Schechter Day School (KSDS) of Chizuk Amuno Congregation has offered a vibrant, dynamic, and nurturing environment that provides excellent general and Judaic education for students in grades kindergarten through eight. As Baltimore’s only Conservative Jewish day school, KSDS’ students benefit from the rigorous values-based education, which provides excellence and intellectual integrity in a dual curriculum. KSDS graduates experience high levels of acceptance in colleges and graduate programs, and, more importantly, are active members in their own communities.

KSDS 30th Anniversary Campaign

The 30th Anniversary Campaign raised over $1.2 million to provide significant enhancements to the students’ learning environment through renovations that were completed in the summer of 2011. In addition, over $600,000 in new funding was generated to support KSDS scholarship needs from 2011 through 2016. Donors to the 30th Anniversary Campaign are acknowledged for their generosity and commitment to KSDS.

Over the past decade, the need for financial assistance has grown exponentially and KSDS has seen a rise in the number of families that apply for and are eligible to receive tuition assistance. Now more than ever, the school is turning to our community to ensure that families that choose a day school education at KSDS are able to send their children. KSDS would like to acknowledge the following foundations for their support of the KSDS Scholarship Fund this year.
