Krieger Schechter Day School Annual Report 2013-2014

Letter from Bil Dear KSDS Community, Thank you for your tremendous support of Krieger Schechter Day School this past year. As we reflect on 2013-2014, our reputation as an outstanding Baltimore educational institution continued thanks to our deeply committed faculty, exceptional academic programs, bright and engaged students, and caring community of parents and friends. The strength of our faculty is clear in the numbers. Over half of our 83 faculty members have worked at KSDS for more than 10 years, 21 of whom have been at KSDS for over 20. These numbers are a true testament to the dedication of our faculty, whose high professional retention is a rarity in schools today. KSDS is privileged to have a faculty of educators devoted to teaching our students academically, Jewishly, and morally. As constant learners, our faculty is continually improving, evaluating, and challenging themselves and each other to grow in best practices in teaching. For the past two years, our faculty collaborated and created a document to evaluate education and teaching at KSDS. The “Vision of Good Teaching at Krieger Schechter” encouraged us to both explore and question our teaching practices to ensure the highest quality education for our students. The product of such a quality faculty is an extraordinary student body. Our graduates are sought after by top independent and public schools for their strong academic skills, high work ethic, and incredible character. Over 80% of students in Grades 5-7 scored in the 90th percentile or higher on one or more ERB tests, with more than half scoring in the 95th percentile or higher. The ERB tests are given to over 360,000 students in member schools and assess student aptitude in Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Math Concepts. In conjunction with our students and staff, our parent body played an invaluable role this past year. Last spring we administered a 10-question survey for parents to complete regarding their family’s experience at KSDS. We were able to glean a lot of helpful information and insight into what we are doing well and areas where we can continue to improve. The most notable highlight was that 92% of families responded that they would recommend Krieger Schechter to a friend, an honorable statistic that drives us to be the best school that we can. Finally we want to thank the greater community of grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, and friends for your support of KSDS. That value you place on our school ensures that we continue to deliver the finest Jewish day school education in Baltimore. We are grateful for your contributions and look forward to continued success in the current year.

KSDS Achievements Vision of Good Teaching Working with the Mandel Center at Brandeis University, Krieger Schechter administration and faculty spent the past two years immersed in developing a document for growth and support entitled “Vision of Good Teaching at Krieger Schechter.” The document is a continuum that looks at six specific standards including: Knowing Children As Learners; Planning Instruction for All Students; Engaging and Supporting Student Learning; Assessing Student Learning; Building a Learning Community Rooted in Jewish Values; Developing As a Professional Educator. The school is using this document to reinforce growth and professional development among faculty members. Ta’am Shabbat This year, on Friday afternoons, the entire school stopped classes 45 minutes early to participate in Ta’am Shabbat. Once a month, parents and community members are invited to join our students to celebrate Shabbat in a ruachfilled session. Other weeks include friend-to-friend Shabbat experiences between Lower School and Middle School students, division-wide celebrations and class/grade gatherings. The goal of Ta’am Shabbat is to give all of our students an opportunity to symbolize Shabbat through a separation from the rest of the week’s learning. Bo N’Daber Under the leadership of Dr. Sharon Buck and Kristen Wavle, KSDS developed and introduced our own socialemotional curriculum called Bo N’Daber, based on best practices throughout North America, and making it our own distinctive curriculum by integrating Jewish values. Themes were carefully selected that aligned based on a very specific Jewish teaching each month. Tikun Olam - Repairing the World KSDS raised over $10,000 through its weekly tzedakah collection to support local, national, and global causes including cancer research, Israel, homelessness, poverty, the environment, and many more. Middle School Awards 44 KSDS Middle School students were recognized for outstanding achievement in academics, leadership, character and athletics at our annual Awards Night program. In addition, the Girls A basketball team won the championship at the annual KSDS Invitational Basketball tournament for the second consecutive year.

Leaving a Legacy This past year, KSDS said thank you and good luck to our long-term leader, teacher, colleague and friend, Shelley Hendler. In her 14 years as a KSDS teacher and administrator (and her years here as a parent of three KSDS graduates!), Shelley brought creativity, passion, dedication, high academic standards, warmth and innovation to the Middle School. Her legacy of milestone and meaningful programs and academic endeavors - the Learning Festival, Coffee House, Instructional Showcase, Writing Workshop class, Science Showcase - stand in long tribute to her energy, passion and belief in experiential learning. But even more important to Shelley’s legacy are the individual relationships that she developed - with students, parents, teachers, and alumni. Shelley knew innately how to understand what mattered most to the people whose lives she touched, and she helped each person grow, knowing that he/she had a partner in Ms. Hendler. Thank you, Shelley Hendler, for all that you did to continue and grow the legacy of the Middle School at KSDS.

Lower School Highlights Maryland

Grade 4 students study Maryland history through many lenses, including geographic, political, and cultural perspectives. Their studies look at the laws and government of Maryland’s first settlement in St. Mary’s City to the present. Students also had the opportunity to meet with State Senator Bobby Zirkin. He brought the legislative process to life by simulating the steps that must take place in order to create and enact new laws.

Come Visit Me!

Lower School students are always happy to share their excitement and learning with family and friends. On Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day, hundreds of visitors flock to our classrooms to study alongside their beloved KSDS student(s). It’s always wonderful to see classrooms with “students” of all ages.

Fractured Fairy Tales

Grade 2 students entertained and educated a whole-school audience in their toe-tapping musical performance, “Fractured Fairy Tales.” The students’ creativity came alive as they interpreted classic fairy tales and performed them with a unique spin. We were enchanted watching each story from “once upon a time” to “happily ever after.”

Lower School Spirit Day

Lower School students joined together for a fun-filled Spirit Day to celebrate another awesome year. Students were divided into four teams to participate in friendly competition including GaGa tournaments, relay races, obstacle courses, and cup-stacking competitions. Snowballs in every flavor and a moon bounce were an added bonus!

Apple Valley Days

Grade 3 students immerse in a 3-day simulation that is always a highlight of the KSDS experience: Apple Valley Days. Throughout the simulation, the students dress as they did in pioneer days, perform chores, and learn in a classroom with no internet and no electricity! Even the lessons were reflective of the time period with vocabulary words like “quill” being sketched on chalkboards.

Middle School Highlights Grade 6 Language Arts Storytelling Project

For the Grade 6 storytelling project, students read a classic novel of their choice, tracked the protagonist’s main character traits, and then selected a pivotal scene that best captures these traits. Next, students participated in a 5-day workshop that guided them through the process of transforming their selected scenes into stories with emotion, depth, and character development. Finally, students presented to their peers as well as to our special guests from Deir El Asad, Israel.

Grade 8 STEAM Elective Students explored their creativity, collaborative spirit and scientific insight during this twice per week elective focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Students built circuits, made working toys and gadgets, and let their imaginations and scientific know-how see how far they could soar.

Israel Fair

Grade 8 students returned to school after their class Israel trip, ready and excited to share their experience and learning with the rest of the students and teachers at KSDS. Students in grades K-7 rotated through different displays, activities, and stories, as Grade 8 students presented about different aspects of their trip, Israeli society and Hebrew language.

Middle School Leadership Council

Filmmaking Club

Students in Grades 5 and 6 participated in an after-school club dedicated to the art and joy of movie making. Students wrote original screenplays, acted, directed and edited their films for the first annual KSDS FilmFest, which was enjoyed by their family and friends.

Within a new, innovative model for a Middle School student council, representative students from each grade-level made a commitment to participate in the Leadership Council this year. LC students planned special school programs, promoted monthly Bo N’Daber value focuses, served as role models and leaders at school events, and proposed and implemented ways to make the Middle School community an even more wonderful place to be.

Schechter on the Move 5K Race On Sunday, June 1, 2014 over 450 people participated in the Schechter on the Move 5K Race and 1 Mile Family Fun Run. This annual event is a highlight of the year, marking the conclusion of another successful school year and celebrating the special community at KSDS. Funds raised from race sponsorship go to support the KSDS Scholarship Fund. This year $32,000 was raised from the event and went to support the almost 40% of KSDS families that received need-based tuition assistance. Participants of all ages joined in the morning, walking and running the 3.1 miles through the Stevenson neighborhood that adjoins KSDS. A sea of bright purple (from the race shirts) could be seen throughout, and the energy was exciting. Back on the KSDS campus there were post-race festivities that included water tag, face painting and moon bounces. A great morning was had by all.
