The Word is Collaboration

D

uring these months that I have worked as Chizuk Amuno’s Director of Congregational Life, the focus has been increasing collaboration among groups. Every program of the Congregational Life Committee (CLC) reflects this theme. In fact, the CLC itself is composed of representatives from every affiliate and school group with the goal of bringing all of Chizuk Amuno together for community celebration and learning. Collaboration is not only seen at CLC events, such as the opening BBQ Bash and the Laser Lights program for Hanukkah. The Israel Engagement Committee, so ably chaired by Ellen Friedman, with the assistance of Jenny Baker, has cosponsored three events this year.

The first was a breakfast with Brotherhood, featuring our congregant Matt Freedman, an expert on the aliyah of Ethiopian Jews. The second event was Jerusalem on a Plate, a movie and food tasting with the Stulman Center for Adult Learning. Most recently, Israel Engagement cosponsored a movie on Ariel Sharon, joining forces with the Baltimore Zionist District . We also gathered for music, schmoozing, and food at Pub Night, a coming together of the Brotherhood and Sisterhood for an incredibly successful event. And kudos to Rabbi Stuart Seltzer and Erica Allen, for creating ACHSHAV, a new program for our 8th and 9th grade Rosenbloom Religious School graduates, in collaboration with the Beth El religious school. Add to that, the Kadima youth group, which brings together middle school students from both KSDS and RRS, and you see that in every area of synagogue and school life, we are coming together for excellence.

Saturday evening, March 15, 2014 7:30 p.m. • Ma’ariv, Havdalah, and family celebration for all ages – reading of the Megillah, Sanctuary Come in costume. Experience the Purim story like it has never been told before! Enjoy Ahasuerus the Unicyclist, Queen Esther the Singer, and Mordechai the Juggler. 8:00 p.m. • Traditional Megillah Reading, Esterson Auditorium 8:30 p.m. • Fabulous Fun, Food, Entertainment, DJ, and Dancing for Families • High School Purim Party • Middle School Purim Party • Adults’ Got Talent, Karaoke, Schmoozing, and Adult Drinks

March brings us Purim, an opportunity for every family at Chizuk Amuno and its schools to join together for two major events. The first is on Purim night, Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m., in the Sanctuary, for the megillah reading when the CLC brings you “Shushan’s Got Talent.” Come in costume, and thrill to the extraordinary talents of the major Purim Megillah characters, dance to the music, and enjoy delicious Purim treats. Special programming for families, middle school students, high school students, and adults follows. And on Sunday, March 16, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., come one, come all to the Purim Carnival! At Chizuk Amuno, collaboration is what it’s all about. B’Shalom,

Rabbi Paul Schneider

Welcome Mamoun and Efaf Assady!

With the support of Daniel Joseph Siegel’s Sparks of Change Foundation, Krieger Schechter is bringing Mamoun and Efaf Assady, Israeli Arabs, to our community for a week of special learning. Mamoun, a prominent educator in the village of Deir al Assad, is a strong supporter of the State of Israel. He and his wife will visit with classes at Schechter, Netivon and the Stulman Center for Adult Learning. We have arranged for the Assadys to meet with interested members of the congregation following Shabbat Kiddush on Saturday, March 8.

With Respect to Those in Need

You may have noticed some new signs in our parking lot. We have removed the reserved staff parking sign and have replaced them with a few signs that one sees on a bus in Israel. These parking spots are for those who do not have a handicap parking permit but who may need a spot just a little closer to the building. This may include someone with a stroller and many children, someone carrying some boxes into the synagogue, someone with a temporary injury, or someone who just needs a little more help and a shorter walk. We are maintaining our many designated handicap spots for those with permits. Our thanks, in advance, to those who will reserve these spots for others. Our thanks as well to the staff for sharing their parking spots for those in need.

Derekh Amuno ~ Pathway to Faith Friends,

A

s the snow and ice melt, we can once again see the tribute walkway, Derekh Amuno, that was installed last fall… We are inviting you to join the more than 130 families who have already memorialized and honored loved ones. This new brick walkway leads to the Hoffberger Chapel entrance and is a beautiful addition to our synagogue grounds. Engraved tribute bricks are a wonderful way to recognize milestone occasions such as b’nei mitzvah, graduations, and birthdays, as well as to honor the memory of loved one. Bricks can also be purchased to recognize the good works of teachers or as expressions of gratitude. With graduation season around the corner, consider a brick on Derekh Amuno for a special gift. Each paver can hold up to four lines with 15 characters per line, including spaces. For more information or to order your brick, contact Laurel Freedman at lfreedman@chizukamuno.org or 410/824-2054. Sincerely, Judy Schwartz Chair, Derekh Amuno
