“And I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit into you…” (Ezekiel 36:26) New Shabbat is our joyous, informal contemporary Friday night service with instrumental music. Come and enjoy an upbeat Shabbat celebration of prayer, song, and insight. We will gather for our next New Shabbat service on October 17.
New Shabbat A.M. is a joyous and reflective Shabbat morning celebration of prayer, song accompanied by instrumental music, and insight. Using a special prayer book that includes Hebrew transliteration and English reflection, New Shabbat A.M. seeks to facilitate personal prayer and communal celebration in a concise hour and one-half user-friendly service, during which we talk personally, read and study Torah, and grow in our own synagogue skills. Our next New Shabbat A.M. service will take place on October 25.
Friday, September 5 • 6:30 p.m.
Locals attribute this to surprise. Visitors to Savannah don’t expect to find a Jewish community in that part of the country. Many of us often include synagogue visits when we travel. On our family’s vacation this summer we visited the Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island, famous as the first American synagogue built in 1759. Exploring synagogues roots us when we are not at home. Learning about different synagogue histories, cultural traditions, and communities connects us. We feel gratified when we see older synagogues restored and renewed. We are pained when synagogues are vandalized or desecrated. This summer, by my count, there were more than twenty attacks on synagogues in fourteen different countries, including the United States. Alarmingly, antiSemitism and anti-Jewish violence are on the rise all over Europe and in countries around the globe. This is real. Synagogues are often the target when hatred is aimed at Jews. Synagogues represent Jews and Judaism to the larger world. As the reflection of a local Jewish community, each synagogue continued on page 11

New Annual Campaign Format Needs Your Support Annual Campaign Focuses on Education and Engagement
“Since synagogue dues and school tuitions alone do not fully cover our total annual expenses, our annual campaign is crucial to providing the needed funding for us to fulfill our mission, educate our children, and meet the needs of our members,” explains Beth Goldsmith, chair of this year’s Annual Campaign. This year’s annual campaign will be different in several ways. Firstly, we have a coordinated campaign theme for our entire institution,
synagogue and schools, focusing on the excellent education we provide to students of all ages. Members may continue to designate the synagogue or one of the schools as the recipient of their contribution. The leaders of the synagogue and schools are committed to working together to maximize our success. This Campaign for Education and Engagement helps provide school scholarships, expanded educational programming, and enhanced educational opportunities for our students. Secondly, we will not interrupt the beauty and meaning of the High Holy Days with an appeal and pledge cards
during the Yom Kippur service. While it is tempting to address all of our members during a time with their largest attendance, the sanctity of the holiday services should not be interrupted with a request for money. Thirdly, in order to refrain from asking for money during the holidays, we need your participation and support. Our goal is 100% participation prior to Rosh HaShanah. We invite you to consider increasing your previous gift in light of our rising costs, increased scholarship requests, and expanding education and youth programming. We hope you will respond generously to the solicitation letter you will receive. Thank you, in advance, for your needed and meaningful support.
Chizuk Amuno Brotherhood Sukkah Kit Perform the mitzvah of building and dwelling in a sukkah by purchasing an easy to assemble sukkah kit for $250. Orders must be received by Monday, September 15 and pickup will be at Chizuk Amuno, Sunday, October 5. Please make checks out to

There is a limited number of kits available, orders will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Volunteers are also needed for building and dismantling the sukkot – please notify Jeff Snyder, sjeff@camsi. com, if you are available.

The High Holy Days are coming, and we have engaging, meaningful teen services in the works. On Thursday, September 25 at 10:30 a.m., the first day of Rosh HaShanah, inspired by personal stories from people who have made major changes in their lives, we’ll envision how we can be the authors of our own stories this coming year. On Yom Kippur we’ll talk about Israel – what’s going on, what’s going to be, how we can address Israel in our families, with our friends, and in school – led by a panel of teens and others from our community who have just spent time there. Our new Director of Teen and Family Engagement, Rabbi Marci Jacobs Aronchick, is planning fabulous programs and events for this coming year and would like your help. The sky’s the limit! What are you looking for from your Chizuk Amuno community? Consider this an invitation to share your thoughts and ideas any time. In addition, we are assembling a Teen Council – a group of teens from the Chizuk Amuno community who will come together to dream, plan, and lead. Please be in touch if you would like to participate – you can reach Rabbi Aronchick at ext. 305 or maronchick@ chizukamuno.org. We’re looking forward to a great year!
Learning @ Chizuk Amuno An Invitation to Participate
The Many Voices of Israel: A Journey through Historical Narrative
Each Shabbat and holiday when we join together for celebration, we hope to enjoy engaging and participatory communal prayer. In our prayer services we seek to foster an intimate and relaxed mood with an emphasis on personal prayer and inspiration. We desire that congregants of all ages join in, help plan, and lead our various services. In our synagogue prayer, we hope to draw nearer to God, Judaism, the Jewish people, and one another. This is an invitation for you to help us in achieving these goals. How would you like to participate in our Shabbat and holiday services? We are looking for individuals and small groups of friends who occasionally would like to: • offer a personal prayer, kavanah, which is a statement of personal feelings and thoughts, written in the form of prayer, request, gratitude, or reflection; • reflect briefly on a question relevant to our prayer experience, • suggest a service theme and/or select readings and materials to enhance our services. We’re also looking for additional individuals who want to • participate by chanting portions of the service, or Torah and Haftarah texts. As well, this is an invitation to anyone who would like to • improve his or her synagogue skills in order to join our cadre of prayer leaders and readers. We hope you will accept this invitation and we look forward to hearing from you. Please be in touch with our clergy to discuss how you wish to participate in our synagogue services. Thank you for your consideration, suggestions, and presence in our community!

A Taste of Mussar: An Introduction to the Study and Practice of Jewish Spiritual Ethics
Jewish prayer did not begin as recitation from a book. In the early centuries of Jewish experience, there was no fixed liturgy. Originally, prayer was extemporaneous, voiced because of a specific need or in response to a particular situation. Over time Jewish prayer became formal, scripted, and communal. Let’s explore how Jewish prayer evolved, how we can honor this history, and at the same time promote the promise of personal prayer for ourselves. *This course will be conducted by Rabbi Shulman over eight weeks. The first four classes coincide with the Baltimore Board of Rabbis Adult Institute. Chizuk Amuno members who participate in the Adult Institute weeks continue through December 9.
Marcia Glass-Siegel and Stephen Siegel Sundays, 10-11:30 a.m. October 26, November 2, 9, 16
Mussar is a centuries-old Jewish body of teachings and spiritual practice that provides guidance in identifying your uniquely personal path of spiritual growth and offers practices to help bring about that growth. The goal of Mussar is to help you become a more whole and holy person. A Taste of Mussar provides an experience of the tradition of learning and practicing Mussar. Each week, in addition to the group meeting, you will receive three e-mails that include short readings, practices, and reflection questions. Fee: $36, includes study materials

is a symbolic center of Jewish life and our people’s heritage. Synagogues are also where Jews gather. In a world hostile to Israel and where, in some places, it is difficult for Jews to live safely, we are privileged to join in celebration, solidarity with Israel, and Jewish expression. We will do so often in this New Year. Now is the time to invite and welcome others who aren’t currently participating in synagogue life to find their place with us. All of us want to understand world events and find personal meaning for our lives during challenging times.

When we are engaged with one another and watchful over our own community, together, we are attentive to what’s happening everywhere else. For us, Mickve Israel and the Touro Synagogue are destinations we visit. Happily, for living out our Jewish lives and feelings, Chizuk Amuno is the synagogue we call home. L’Shanah Tovah, May we greet a New Year of goodness which brings our people and our world peace.
