Welcome to the July/August issue. Life at CHN has been somewhat hectic over the last few weeks due to an office move.

We have also been busy doing a tried and tested on Strawmax Bedding. We are used to having traditional straw bedding, so this was quite an adventure for us. It was very easy to set up and maintain, and we were impressed with it.

Another adventure arrived, in the form of a beautiful black cob called Taylor (our cover star this issue with his former rider, Sue Anness). I put on my brave pants and climbed aboard for the first time in six years! It was not a pretty sight, but the saint that is Taylor looked after me, leaving me feeling very inspired. He really is ‘thoroughbred in the body of cob’. I just need to lose some weight now so that I am not rolling about on the poor boy!

Back to this issue. We have an article about equine behaviour, and also one about the stifle joint. Both are very informative and make interesting reading. There is also a fantastic competition prize; a Masta Rug given by Harry Hall.

With the summer shows and events well underway, we have plenty of event dates listed to help with your diary planning. Fingers crossed the weather behaves itself, and there are no cancellations. Blue Cross publishes new ‘Mary King approved’ practical horse care guides

National Pet Charity Blue Cross has added three new practical horse care guides to its website to help horse owners keep their precious charges healthy and happy in the summer months. The Stifle Joint

The stifle joint is similar to the human knee, it is located at the top of the hind limb in the horse. The femur runs from the hip down to the stifle, then the tibia runs from the stifle down to the hock. The stifle has a bone on the front called the patella – this is similar to the human knee cap (figure 1).

The stifle is one of the more complex joints within the horse. It actually consists of two joints; the femoropatellar joint, and the femorotibial joint, which can be split into medial and lateral compartments. There are a total of fourteen ligaments, and two cartilaginous discs called menisci, which ensure that the femur and tibia move easily relative to each other, and absorb concussion (figure 2). The bony structures also act as origins and insertions for some of the more powerful hindlimb muscles, making this high-motion joint very important.

Lameness involving the stifle is not uncommon in equine practice, and early diagnosis is key to a good outcome. These issues may either be developmental, or injuries that are acquired through trauma. Lameness, varying from mild poor performance, to acute severe lameness, may be noted, along with swelling of the joint space. Radiography and ultrasonography are usually the imaging modalities of choice for the stifle joint, allowing the best evaluation of both the bony and soft tissue structures respectively.

Conditions of the stifle:

Fractures:

The stifle is not an uncommon kick site in the horse, and as such may become fractured (figure 4). These injuries vary in their configuration and severity. Horses may present with moderate to severe lameness, and are often entirely unable to move. Some types may carry a good prognosis with rest or surgery, while others can be catastrophic.

Wounds:

The size of the stifle joint also means that it is a common site for wounds. Wounds which have entered the joint space itself result in infection, which causes severe lameness, usually with a large amount of joint swelling. These horses require arthroscopy surgery to flush the infection out of the joint, but the prognosis is generally good.

Osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) and osseous cyst-like lesions (OCLLs):

The stifle joint is also a common site for OCD/OCLLs, a

multifactorial condition of juvenile horses in which ossification defects develop within the joint cartilage (figure 3). These defects can go on to cause inflammation within the joint, although the horse often does not become lame until work is started, and the lameness is usually mild initially. Arthroscopy surgery can be done to address these defects, and carries a prognosis of 65-85% returning to work. If left untreated, these lesions do go on to cause osteoarthritis, and the prognosis after this is poorer, so early diagnosis and intervention is key to a good result.

Osteoarthritis:

Osteoarthritis is usually secondary to other issues in the stifle, such as OCD/OCLLs or meniscal injuries. As the stifle joint is so mobile, osteoarthritis can be more challenging to manage in this joint. Various joint medication options exist, such as steroid anti-inflammatories, hyaluronate, polyacrylamide gel, or stem cells.

Meniscal injuries:

Injuries to the cartilage pads between the femur and tibia are usually secondary to trauma, and can be visualised using ultrasonography (figure 5). In addition to this, there can also be associated bone damage, collateral ligament

damage and joint effusion. Surgery is often needed to debride the lesion and encourage healing. Joint injections can also be considered to help reduce inflammation. The prognosis for return to work following these injuries is usually guarded, with osteoarthritis being a common sequela. Half to two thirds of horses return to work, depending on the severity of the injury.

Collateral ligament injuries:

Also often secondary to trauma, collateral ligament injuries have to be carefully managed, as comlpete rupture of either collateral ligament can destabilise the entire limb. Box rest and controlled exercise are indicated while the ligament heals and regains strength.

Cruciate ligament injury:

Whilst not common, cruciate ligament injuries do occur in horses, and around 50% do well with surgical debridement. Rupture of a cruciate ligament, however, will destabilise the joint and does not usually carry a favourable prognosis. If you have any concerns regarding soundness or poor performance in your horse, or about the stifle joint specifically please contact your vet.

Equine Behaviour Working

With Horses – Not Against Them!

The modern horse has evolved over millions of years as a prey species, watching for potential threats from any direction and at any time. Failure to fear new or suddenly moving objects has potentially fatal consequences, so horses are primed for fear as a first response. This underpins all equine behaviour and learning. We know that the modern environmental threats of wheelie bins, tractors and flapping plastic bags aren’t actually dangerous – but millions of years of fighting for survival says otherwise!

The behaviours horses show in response to different stimuli may simply be undesirable, such as spooking at a bollard. Other behaviours present a significant danger both to humans and to the horse itself. Examples of this might be rearing and boxing when presented with a vaccination needle or bolting in traffic.

By understanding what drives these behaviours and how we can influence them, we can reduce our horse’s stress levels and facilitate their training, so that the time we spend with them is as safe and rewarding as possible – for us and for them!

It is very easy and natural to attribute human characteristics and thought processes to equine behaviour, but to do so can be counter-productive. The horse’s brain does not have a large pre-frontal cortex – this means that they are not able to have abstract thoughts about the past or the future, so they live purely in the present moment. Memories may be triggered by environmental stimuli, but horses cannot

plan or problem-solve. This means they cannot ‘decide’ to be ‘naughty’ or ‘silly’ – their behaviour is a result of their reactions to stimuli. None of this means that horses are not intelligent! They have a tremendous capacity to learn by trial and error, and a fabulously good long-term memory. However, their short-term memory is very poor.

There are two broad kinds of learning, both of which are very relevant to how we train our horses.

Non-associative learning is the simplest form of learning, and includes habituation and sensitisation. Non-associative learning

happens as a result of exposure to a single stimulus, and happens without us interfering! The result of non-associative learning is either the reduction or intensification of a behaviour that is already present.

Habituation is a prerequisite for all other forms of learning, because in order to learn, horses must be able to filter out unimportant stimuli and focus on important signals instead Habituation means that the horse stops responding to a stimulus after repeated experiences. The stimulus must be presented frequently for habituation to occur. During the backing process, we need horses to habituate to tack and pressure on their backs. Later on in their training, we also need them to habituate to such things as traffic, potential predators such as dogs and unfamiliar objects. Habituation will also happen when we don’t want it to, for example becoming unresponsive to nagging leg aids.

Habituation can be transmitted between horses! Foals show reduced fear responses to handling if they are allowed to observe their (habituated) dam being handled 1-5 days after birth. A habituated mare facilitates foal learning – but a fearful mare promotes fearfulness in the foal.

Similarly, a naïve horse paired with a habituated horse will show reduced fear reactions to suddenly moving object, and the reduction in response remains when given the same stimulus three days later without the habituated companion present. In a group, the ratio of unhabituated to ‘demonstrator’ horse is important and so is the age of the demonstrator – naive older horses can re-sensitise a young, previously habituated horse! This suggests that we need to be careful in our choice of ‘nanny’ horses to accompany young horses in training.

Habituation to one novel object does not transfer to objects that are a different shape AND colour.

Sensitisation and desensitisation occur as a result of training by humans – DELIBERATE OR INTENDED! Horses are innately fearful of new objects, as a result of millions of years of avoiding predators, so it is very easy to increase

sensitisation instead of desensitising! When training a horse we must be alert for signs of stress – fear and stress inhibit learning.

Sensitisation means that after repeated exposures, the response to a stimulus becomes faster and/or more intense. Often an increased response to a whole class of stimuli is seen, as well as to the original one. This means that exposure to a frightening or painful stimulus increases sensitivity to other stimuli as well as the original one.

Desensitisation techniques are methods used to achieve habituation and include systematic desensitisation, counter-conditioning, over-shadowing, flooding, approach conditioning and stimulus blending. These techniques overlap and are not always appropriate to use – it is very easy to get it wrong!

Behavioural responses can be affected by:-

• Motivational factors, such as food or the intensity of the stimulus

• Sensory adaptation/fatigue

• Physiological factors such as pain

Associative learning, also called conditioning happens when events or stimuli are experienced in close association. A foal finding the udder for the first time comes to associate the udder with food.

Learning to avoid pain and discomfort also happens by associative learning – even ‘simple’ animals such as flies and slugs show advanced learning in these situations. When links are made between two or more signals, we describe the learning process as classical conditioning.

The best-known example of classical conditioning is Pavlov’s dogs – Pavlov rang a bell whenever he fed his dogs; after a while, when the dogs heard the bell ringing, they began to salivate in anticipation of food arriving. Classical conditioning is the association of two events. The one most useful to us in training horses is the association of the sound of a clicker and being given a treat. Sadly, we also see the result of classical conditioning in a horse that flinches when a

hand is quickly raised near their head.

Operant conditioning is learning that occurs when links are made between signals or the horse’s actions and the outcome - the horse learns how its behaviour can influence an outcome. Operant conditioning signals are divided into reinforcement and punishment. Reinforcement signals make the horse more likely to repeat that response in the future, e.g. if given food when fidgeting, the horse will learn that fidgeting produces food. Punishment signals make the horse less likely to repeat that response in the future e.g. if touching an electric fence results in getting a shock, the horse is less likely to touch the fence again.

Reinforcement and punishment can be positive or negative! Positive reinforcement – adding something nice which makes the behaviour more likely to be repeated, e.g. food or neck scratches (not patting!)

Negative reinforcement – taking away something aversive /pressure release, e.g. tension on leadrope.

Positive punishment – adding something aversive which makes behaviour less likely to be repeated.

Negative punishment – removing something pleasant after the undesired behaviour which makes that behaviour less likely to be repeated.

Punishment is very problematic!

• The timing is absolutely critical, and most of the time

Sally is ancient enough to remember the first, proper James Herriot series. Whether or not she’d read the books first is lost in the mists of time, but the appeal of spending time outdoors solving bizarre problems and making a (positive) difference to the lives of animals and their owners was strong. Having been told by the careers advisor that veterinary medicine was ‘too difficult, you won’t get in,’ Sally took the long way around and completed a degree in Zoology at Liverpool before studying Veterinary Medicine at Cambridge. She was asked to leave Cambridge in 2007 (having successfully graduated) and went straight into equine practice, working for practices in Lambourn and Suffolk before joining HNVG in 2010. In January 2022, Sally became a Senior Vet in the Equine Team.

punishment is applied much too late to have any meaning at all – this includes whipping a horse for stopping at a jump

• It doesn’t help the horse learn the ‘right’ answer

• The horse can become desensitised to punishment – this then becomes a welfare issue as often the application of punishment is increased, to no effect

• Punishment causes fear and anxiety, which inhibit learning and can make the horse dangerous to handle

• Punishment very easily becomes associated with a particular person

• Fearful horses will often trial hyper-reactive behaviour, leading to inadvertent pressure release which reinforces that behaviour.

For these reasons punishment should be avoided whenever possible.

Successful training reduces stress and fear and increases the safety of animals and people. It often allows us to perform procedures that benefit the animal – my personal favourite example is the elephants that have been trained to swill saline around in their trunks and then blow it into a collection bag to be tested for infectious agents.

When we are faced with a behaviour we don’t want, we should be asking ourselves ‘whyisthisbehaviourhappening?’ Is it in pain, fearful or stressed? Or is there a gap in the horse’s training that means it is not prepared or able to respond as we want it to?

Like all the Equine team, Sally’s caseload is quite varied. She has particular interests in farriery and internal medicine, and in 2018 achieved the Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Equine Medicine), taking the viva exam in Liverpool on the way to the Petplan Vet of the Year awards evening in Birmingham – a somewhat stressful piece of scheduling!

Recognising the close bond that we all have with our animals, Sally’s aim is to leave each visit having helped her client understand what is happening with their horse, and with, if not a road map, at least a Plan A and sometimes a Plan B as well.

In her spare time, Sally is a real live human being. She is owned by two spaniels and a ride & drive pony, who sometimes let her spend some time gardening or cooking.

ummer is very much upon us and as horse owners, we might be relishing the better weather. However, for horses who suffer with sweet itch and other allergies or are particularly affected by flies, it’s not always so good. Horses with sweet itch are mostly affected between March and November when the biting insects are most active. This is because sweet itch is an allergic reaction to the protein in the saliva of female midges. During the summer months, horses can also encounter other allergens in addition to insect saliva, such as pollens (grass, tree and weed). Horses can be allergic to just one allergen, or more commonly a few different ones at the same time.

A horse’s reaction to biting insects causes the immune system to attack its own cells and leads to an extreme reaction. Horses predominantly show signs of sweet itch at the base of the mane and tail, and on the face. The withers, back, belly and rump can also be affected. Symptoms range from mild to severe itchiness, often accompanied by hair loss and broken skin from constant scratching, which can then lead to an infection. Over time the skin can thicken, folds develop, and the hair becomes sparse and coarse with flaky skin. Several behavioural changes can also occur including excessive rolling and mutual grooming, head shaking and an agitated/restless demeanour.

There are several essential management tools you can use to help manage your horse or pony’s symptoms such as a fly rug, stabling during times of high midge activity (dawn and dusk) and using various creams and sprays that are available. Alongside this, have you thought about helping soothe from the inside out? Mostof us look forward to summer – long hacks down leafy lanes and horses relaxing in grassy fields and warm sunshine, but no sooner does the weather improve than out come the bugs! It can often seem that the insect population is out to make your horse’s life a misery, from stable flies biting his ankles to horseflies driving him into a frenzy in the field!

Summer showers followed by warm sunshine provide the ideal conditions for flies to proliferate, so our changeable weather is an ideal breeding ground for the fly population! To beat this, you need a proper bug defense program.

Advances in technology and an understanding of insect control indicate that a combination of management and chemical control now provides the most sophisticated and cost-effective means of protection.

Understanding the enemy is key to winning the battle and reducing the attractions that lure them to the area is a good starting point. Most flies prefer to lay their eggs in moist, decaying organic matter, where the larva develops into a pupa, from which the adult emerges. The abundance of fly and insect populations is affected by temperature, moisture levels and humidity and stables, yards, and barns provide the ideal breeding environment. The key to controlling numbers of flies and insects is to break the breeding cycle.

Preventing moisture in potential fly breeding areas is a critical factor in fly control and implementing some key yard management tactics can have a profound effect. So, take a walk around your stable area looking for places that insects will find enticing, and clean them up.

• Remove manure regularly and keep the area around the muck heap clean and dry and ensure that the heap is as far away from the stables as possible.

• Clean up around taps and hosepipes and ensure that watering systems are well maintained to prevent leaks.

• A concrete apron with a gradient around stables and barns will help keep the area clean and dry

• Remove accumulated bedding in hard-to-clean areas such as under feeders and automatic water bowls, in corners, and around fences and rails.

• Ensure good ventilation and airflow to prevent moisture build-up and allow bedding and floors to dry.

Strawmax on trial...

STRAWMAX straw pellets, produced by equine bedding experts, BEDMAX, are made from straw. In the manufacturing process, the straw is chopped, milled and dust extracted, before being turned into pellets. This is done under pressure and at a high temperature to eliminate bacteria and spores. In this way, the main issue of the dust associated with a regular straw bed is eradicated. Another big advantage for owners is that once the initial bed has been laid (usually between six and eight 15kg bags), the very high absorbency of the pellets means only one or two bags are needed every week as top up, as wet areas in the bed tend to be confined and therefore easy to remove. This not only makes straw pellets an economical choice for owners, but the reduced storage space needed makes them practical for owners and retailers alike.

Other positive selling points for Strawmax straw pellets include the facts that they are:highly absorbent, sustainable, generally using locally sourced straw and low-energy production method, They produce a smaller muck heap that composts very quickly.

Furthermore, because of the type of bed produced, horses are disinclined to eat straw pellets, in contrast to straw, which is highly palatable to many horses.

CHN were delighted to be given the opportunity to test the Strawmax pellets.

We read of several methods for making up the bed, and opted for the ‘wheelbarrow’ method.

We emptied a bag into the wheelbarrow, added water, then waited for the pellets to expand which was a quick process. Once the pellets had expanded and looked nice and fluffy, we simply wheeled it into the stable and tipped it up - the process could not have been simpler.

I like a nice thick layer of bedding and also banks, so we used 12 bags for the initial bed in our 12 x 12 stable.

With plenty of extra bedding around the sides, I pulled this forward as the days went on, meaning it was four days before I needed to add an extra bag of Strawmax. The wet urine patches were easily removed and the droppings easily picked up, and are now helping our roses grow!

How to lay and maintain a STRAWMAX

Straw Pellett Bed

There are two methods for starting a straw pellet bed.

One is to lay the bags of bedding out in the stable and split them open, the other is to empty each bag directly onto the clean stable floor.

In both cases, the pellets should be watered generously using a hosepipe and then left for an hour to absorb the water. When the hour is up, any full bags should then be tipped onto the floor and, for both methods, the pellets fluffed up

Enter ‘CHN Cybil’; she looked at her new bedding with some intrigue. She had a good sniff around, nuzzled the bedding, then sank down and had a rigorous roll - she absolutely loved it. By the time she was back on her feet, the bed wasn’t looking so pretty! It was a very quick job to tidy it up, a good insight into how easy the bed was going to be to maintain.

We were extremely impressed with the Strawmax bedding. The bags were a nice size making them easy to transport and store. The used bedding took up very little space on the muck heap and was great to recycle in the garden.The initial set up of the bed and maintenance of it thereafter was very efficient, and I have no doubt that a great deal of time was saved by using this bedding. Launching this September – Level 2 Certificate for Equine Hydrotherapy Assistants

Moulton College is proud to be able to offer the Level 2 Certificate for Equine Hydrotherapy Assistants as of September 2023 for those over 18. If you are currently utilising hydrotherapy equipment in the training or rehabilitation of horses, or you would like to work in this sector in the future then this qualification could be for you.

What is the Qualification?

The qualification has been formally endorsed by the ‘Institute of Registered Veterinary and Animal Physiotherapists’ (IRVAP) and is the only OFQUAL regulated qualification that relates to Equine Hydrotherapy. The course has been developed by industry professionals

to support standardisation and regulation within the sector, and will be delivered at the Moulton Equine Therapy Centre.

Course Overview:

The course itself is comprised of eight modules including an introduction to equine anatomy and physiology, equine health and welfare, pool plant and equipment maintenance and assisting with the application of equine hydrotherapy.

Course Delivery:

In order to suit those that are already working, the course will be offered over a period of

four months (from September through to December). This will incorporate a full days training every Monday to include both formal classroom and practical sessions, with an additional one Sunday per month.

Animal Chiropractic Training for Undergraduates

Anew video has been launched by the McTimoney Animal Association explaining the benefits of a career as an animal chiropractor, aimed at undergraduates needing to make career decisions. School or college leavers with A-levels or equivalent can enrol for the new Master in Veterinary Chiropractic 2023 course, a 4-year full time programme at the McTimoney College of Chiropractic. The course allows those without a previous degree to undertake the training and education required to enter this sought-after career.

With a rising demand for practitioners in the UK and with graduates in several countries across the world now, there has never been a better time to consider training as an animal chiropractor. Animal chiropractic as a profession offers benefits that may appeal to students looking for a career in animal or veterinary care. Animal or Veterinary Chiropractic has increased in popularity in recent years due to its gentleness and effectiveness across a wide range of animals, including horses, dogs, cats, cows, sheep, goats, pigs, even reindeer, and captive species such as reptiles and tapirs!

With the next round of UCAS applications due to close soon, students need to make decisions to enable them to enrol for the appropriate McTimoney Animal Chiropractic training. For those looking for a change in career, with plenty of animal experience but for whom this option was not available when career choices were first made, or for those leaving college with A-levels or BTEC qualifications, training as a McTimoney Animal Chiropractor offers many attractions.

Once qualified, most practitioners spend most of their time outdoors, so while there is some admin required, this role appeals to those who like to be out and about. Often practitioners are self-employed, offering the freedom to arrange your work diary around other activities or commitments such as family, holidays or having your own horse or dog to compete. There are good earnings to be made as a fully qualified McTimoney Animal Chiropractor, reflecting the level of training undertaken to become an animal chiropractor. It takes several years to become a highly skilled professional, but once qualified you will embark on a fulfilling and rewarding career. The practitioner's skills may be applied to different species, assessing each animal and working out a plan to help that animal, and it is extremely satisfying when owners report that the horse or dog is working better and is happier after having the treatment.

Being self-employed does have challenges, and as a McTimoney Animal Chiropractor a level of physical fitness is required to carry out the treatments. Self-motivation and organisational skills are needed to maintain a work diary and ensure prompt attendance at appointments, and records

need to be kept to stay on top of finances. Good communication skills are needed to elicit information from clients, let them know what is happening and give them good aftercare directions.

The McTimoney Animal Association is a professional membership organisation that offers ongoing support and resources for it’s members once qualified.

So what is McTimoney?

In short, it involves adjustments applied using the hands, on specific areas of the skeletal frame, but particularly focussed on areas of the body such as neck, spine or pelvic area. The adjustments are light and gentle, and animals are very accepting of the treatment.

Training programmes are available to suit everyone, depending on entry level.

Undergraduates leaving school or college with A-levels or equivalent can enrol for the Master in Veterinary Chiropractic 2023 course, a 4-year full-time programme.

Postgraduates with a degree in animal or equine science or other relevant degree, can enrol for the Graduate Certificate in Animal Therapy, a 6-month programme, and from there to the MSc Animal Manipulation (Chiropractic).

Postgraduates with either a human chiropractic, physio or osteo degree, have direct access to the MSc Animal Manipulation (Chiropractic) programme.

These programmes are taught by the McTimoney College of Chiropractic, which is located just outside Oxford. Founded in 1972 by John McTimoney, the college has continued to develop over the past 50 years and is at the forefront of animal chiropractic treatment, promoting animal health and welfare within the equine, pet and farm industries. Practical skills are embedded throughout all the training offered, with attendance at off-site kennels and stables integrated as part of all programmes.

The McTimoney College of Chiropractic offers the only university validated animal chiropractic programmes available. To achieve the expected level of academic excellence, the college keep to small class sizes, which enables them to provide excellent student/tutor ratios and student support. Every graduate is highly trained to assess cases correctly and have the confidence to get business and gain the confidence of vets and other paraprofessionals that they may be working with.

resh from being shortlisted for the Pony European Dressage Championships in Le Mans with Cadillac, Sofia has been campaigning another dancing partner. His name is ‘Joey’ aka WS Jackson, owned by Lauren Geraghty and he is well known on the Pony Dressage circuit. He was on the Pony European Dressage Team in Poland last year with Sofia when ridden by Lauren.

This new association began with a text message to Katie (Mum) from Julie Geraghty (Lauren’s Mum) asking if Katie can think of anyone to campaign Joey for this year. Julie Geraghty is a well-known figure on the circuit because of her talent for compiling soundtracks for Dressage to Music. The text message was a subtle way of asking if Sofia was potentially available to ride him due to the pressures of her incredibly packed schedule.

At Addington CDI Julie and Katie met up and arrangements were made for Sofia to travel to Derbyshire to ‘have a sit’. Within minutes of being astride this smart bright liver chestnut, he was striding out in phenomenal fashion and swaggering like Rocky Balboa. Whilst not competing on the circuit Joey had been kept ticking over by Lauren during the winter months, helped by her trainer Young Rider listed Maddy Frewin. Seeing what could potentially be achieved arrangements were made for an HC late entry at Kings Equestrian after a mere three ‘meetings’ between Sofia and Joey. This is an equestrian version of ‘Fast Forward Speed Dating’, and only marginally shy of ‘Married at First Sight’.

Selectors know Joey for being consistent, so when this new partnership pulled a 73% it was a defining moment. A testimony to all Lauren’s hard work during the winter months.

Their next stop, and their first official competition was at Addington Premier 29th and 30th April 2023. On the first day the individual Test was a learning curve with Joey going ‘flat’ between the boards, which led to Maddy and Sofia having to discuss new tactics to light up Joey in future tests. It was decided that Sofia would only drop her stick at the very last second prior to entering the arena, enabling her to keep the ‘revs up’ during the test.

The Team Test on April 30th saw the new tactics being deployed with aplomb. The Stewards were frantically calling for Sofia to come forward to do her test, anxious that she would arrive at the Arena too late. They had not anticipated the speed at which Sofia and Joey galloped to start their test.

FThis was ‘lit up’ indeed, and they started with a bang. Joey was ready to run The Derby. Eagerly watched by everyone this new partnership was attracting a LOT of attention. They did not disappoint. A fizzing Joey danced his heart out and the duo managed to reduce the normally stoic JoJo and Julie to tears during their performance. They scored 73.4% smashing Joey’s previous barriers and giving him his first Premier League win. All this in just five rides.

Two weeks later Team Oliver-Games-Geraghty landed at Hickstead CDI in search of their European Championship qualification with Joey. A late entry had been secured, however torrential rain had virtually destroyed the site, making it impossible to get the lorries on and off. Therefore, a timetable had been created for lorries to be towed on and the assigned slot meant an early morning start of 4.15am. However, this was not the only rude start to the day.

Upon waking at 4.15am Katie found that her hair was wet. Suspecting a leak in the roof, or possible condensation she searched for a source. It was only upon closer inspection that she realised the culprit was Talula the Dachshund who had vomited in the bed whilst Katie was asleep. Cue a very speedy dash to the shower. No amount of brushing was going to shift that lot. However, it transpired that Dachsie vomit is the same as being pooped on by a bird. It brings good luck!

The new pairing enjoyed a Team Test win on the Saturday and a third place in Sunday’s Individual Test, scoring + 70% scores in both and securing their requisite qualification and giving Joey his first International win. In our last column Sofia was nearly literally on fire, but now we can thankfully say that metaphorically she is indeed on fire. However, this presented a paradigm. Joey or Cadillac for potential Team Selection? They would be going head-to-head for Team Selection at Wellington CDI in The Battle of the Boys.

The campaign trail continued with the Team descending upon Somerford Premier League whereupon Sofia and Joey whipped out a double win, achieving his highest ever individual competition score. This trip was also not without incident. Talula the Dachsie struck again, spraying her lucky vomit.

Sofia had forgotten her jacket for the prizegiving so ran back to the lorry to retrieve it. What she found was Talula on the lorry table gorging on the luxury dark chocolate 5” wide cookies they had bought earlier. (£3.00 each!). They had bought twenty of them and there were only fourteen left. Dachsies and chocolate don’t mix. Talula was trying to literally commit death by chocolate. Miraculously due to her iron constitution she survived. Dachsies do tend to be stubborn little monkeys.

In addition to her penchant for vomiting and chocolate Talula has also developed a fascination for white dressage underwear. She has now destroyed seven pairs of Sofia’s competition wear. Katie wailed “I had to spend £100 just on white knickers in M&S the other day!”

As if this was not enough, Team Oliver Games ran into an acquaintance who is a fellow Dachsie lover whilst at Somerford. This ‘friend’ just ‘happened’ to have a Dachsie bitch at home who was due to whelp in the next forty-eight hours. Having left Somerford on the Sunday afternoon, to turn around and head out for a family break in West Wales, they managed to buy a newborn

male Silver/Tan Dachsie puppy to be named ‘Max The Dax’. Double the Trouble. I dread to think of the forthcoming escapades.

And what of Cadillac? Well, he’s not been too shabby either. He was being kept ticking over at local competitions scoring 74% twice and a 76% score. He then enjoyed a Busman’s Holiday to the rain drenched Hickstead CDI to absorb the atmosphere and gain some experience whilst not actually competing. Sadly he took this opportunity to reveal his roguish side. Having been put into his temporary grass-based stabling, he took it upon himself to roll, roll, roll, and roll some more, before the bedding had gone down. He then leapt up, using JoJo’s foot as a landing pad. Sofia returned to find a mud-caked brown pony looking distinctly proud of himself and an ashen-faced JoJo. The paramedics were called and the ambulance arrived. Cadillac was making himself distinctly unpopular. In addition Sofia was not impressed with having to perform the required reparatory repairs without the aid of a shower hose, in the middle of a field with just a bucket and a sponge.

The final selection took place at Wellington with the boys going head-to-head in the Team Test. Unbelievably Sofia rode them both to the exact same score of 69.334%. The next day was the Individual Test, and Sofia’s 15th Birthday. Joey scored 71.4% and Cadillac 69.6%. That gave the Selectors something to contemplate.

As an aside, Sofia does have another passion. Ambrosia custard. Particularly chocolate custard. She does have a pact with Morgan who is Maddy’s boyfriend that for every qualifying score she achieves she ‘earns’ a large tub of the beloved custard from him. In a desperate attempt to reduce Morgan’s outgoings with a sponsorship, Sofia has been tagging Ambrosia in her Instagram posts. Does anyone PLEASE have a contact?

How does Sofia manage to achieve so much? She even managed to clamber up the Brecon Beacons with the Cadets two weeks ago in her ‘spare’ time during the Welsh family break to practise dismantling rifles under the cover of darkness!

Her secret is the immense support team that she relies upon. Mum Katie, the enigmatic JoJo who fulfils many roles including that of HGV driver with an elegant wave of a silk scarf, Katie Bailey her trainer, Maddy Frewin Joey’s supporter, an understanding school, her younger sister Zandra (Zeddy) and Dad Robert who keep the home fires burning. And don’t forget Talula the Miniature Dachshund. Soon to be joined by Maximillian aka Max the Dax.

In our next column there will be news from Le Mans in France. Sofia has been selected on Joey, with Cadillac as his direct reserve. What an achievement! An extra year as reserve will benefit Cadillac’s future career without pressures being brought to bear too early in his career. Joey is on the market after Le Mans, so Sofia will solely campaign Cadillac for the Team in 2024.

Idiscovered MUDCONTROL slabs after decades of keeping my horses at home at various properties, predominantly on heavy clay soil, which can make life an absolute misery for horses, and creates a lot of hard, relentless work for their servants!

When I first saw the slabs I instantly thought that they could be the thing we have all been looking for - a D.I.Y. way to make instant, removable, reusable, heavy-duty hard-standing which would stand up to even the heaviest loads, on any type of soil. The fact that they are made from 100% recycled Playground Certified plastic material, and warrantied for 20 years, were additional bonuses.

The daily toil of bringing in all the horses, shampooing their legs thoroughly, drying them off, stabling overnight, and mucking out, became a thing of the past. This saves us a fortune in bedding and many

hours of work every day. Now our horses live out happily all year, thanks to the mini-track system we have created with mudcontrol slabs. They live on this area when the fields are too wet (6-8 months of the year) with shelters, hay areas and plenty of 'loafing space'. This encourages movement, keeping them healthy in mind and body. It's also a very useful 'dry lot' for restricted grass intake when the sugar levels in the grass go sky high and the laminitis risk increases.

earshot of the house, secure, and has ideal turnout for a number of different requirements, with spacious stabling for when absolutely necessary.
