Welcome to the September/October issue of The Vintage Scene. At long last, we appear to be ‘free’! The Vintage Scene office has been overwhelmed with event reports, and so we have added an extra sixteen pages to this issue. I managed to take the camera for an exercise around two Banbury & District Vintage Ploughing Society matches. Brother Charlie, and nephew Nathan were at both with their Trustys. No placing for either at the first match (Rousham), but Charlie pulled a first out of the hat at the second match (Middle Barton). There are still some great events to come this year. We will be attending the FFF&B Ploughing Society’s Ploughing Match & Country Show with our trade stand. Do pop along and say hello if you are there. Another splendid event is the British National Ploughing Championships & Country Festival who are celebrating their 70th anniversary! Since we last went to press, I have acquired another tractor; an AllisChalmers model B which used to belong to my late father. He sold her, then spent the next fifteen plus years regretting doing so! She was in a

sorry state when I found her, all covered in moss. Her story is on page 33. My aim now, is to keep her in the family to be passed down the generations. Young Rebecca Carson has had an exciting couple of months. She has finished restoring her Lister D stationary engine, and even had it on show at the School Yard Crank Up. Her father, Willy, tells me that she already has a new project and is eager to crack on with it! Again, we have some lovely stories, reports and plenty of diary dates (thanks to Freya here in the office who beavers away researching and then uploading them). With the dark nights creeping in, I expect many of you will be in your workshops tinkering with a new project. We would love to hear about such projects, whether they are a tractor, steam engine, stationary engine, car, motorcycle, mower; in fact anything vintage! Stay safe & see you in November.

A Pressing Pressing Matter…Not! By John Lindley
W
hen I bought my 35, it came with turf tyres which, apart from them standing flat for the best part of twelve years, I didn’t particularly want and so, early on in the restoration process, I decided to replace them with standard rear tyres.
covered in tyre-fitter’s gunk, it came off easily; some hours later, with the aid of both sledge and lump hammers, I got them back to something like normal and ground off the sharp edges that would almost certainly have cut the side walls. With that experience behind me, I decided not to go that way again. A while ago, I joined the Ferguson Club from whence I’d received some sound advice on other matters, so I gave John (Selley) a call. It transpired that he’d come across the same problem but he, not wanting to save the old tyres, resorted to various knives and an angle grinder in the removal of same! As my turf-tyres had life left in them, I wanted to get them off relatively undamaged if possible, hence the call to John.
Now I’d had trouble with front tyres previously on my 20, trouble breaking the seal that is. I tried all kinds of things like running my car onto the tyre while it was flat on the ground, smacking it with a sledge hammer, various crow bars and the like and finally I thought of my vice. Luckily, I have an old blacksmiths vice with plenty of room between the jaws and the screw, enough in fact to allow room for the tyre when the wheel rim is resting on the jaws. I used a foot square of ¾” scrap ply between the back jaw and the rim, to spread the weight, and with the front jaw as close to the rim as possible, a good squeeze from the vice broke the seal, it was then turned round and the process repeated, the tyre was then removed with the aid of my lump hammer and a couple of crowbars (some of you may have proper tyre levers!) That was relatively simple on the front tyres, but the rear ones were a different kettle of fish! Some years ago, I’d had to replace one of the rear tyres on my old 20 (it never had much tread when I bought the tractor some 38 years ago) so I set to, without success I might add, trying to get the thing off. I eventually gave up and resorted to the “professionals” at the local tyre company; well, they did get it off and they supplied a new one but, in the process, they totally mullered the rim; both sides. I wasn’t best pleased, but they did give me a 10% discount! Then, of course, I had a beat-up rim, albeit complete with tyre, but as it was only a few hours old and

He knew a man who knew a man who had a hydraulic press that would easily break the seal if we could get the wheel in it; we couldn’t, but he directed us to a farmer a way down the road who “might be able to help.” Now, said farm sported a newly opened farm shop & café staffed by an extremely attractive young lady who plied us with coffee and sticky buns whilst waiting for the farmer to appear. He’d “never had that problem” but thought the local agricultural dealers might be able to help. By this time though, I was lost as John was driving, so I have no recollection of where or who they were (John doesn’t even remember the trip) which is a great shame as I can’t directly credit the chap who gave me the solution to the problem. (If you are that man and happen to read this, please let me know and I’ll give credit where credit’s due.) Anyhow, John met an old mate outside and whilst he was chatting I went in search of a press. In the workshop I met a chap to whom I explained the problem and “did they have a press?” “You don’t need all that junk mate” he explained “you just need three old bits of old angle iron, a lump hammer and room to swing it! Look here” he said gesticulating to a huge Fendt tractor “it’s so simple; if I wanted to change those tyres, I wouldn’t even bother taking the wheels off.” I can best illustrate his method with the photographs I took as I tried it out back at home. I firstly cut three lumps of 2” angle iron about 4” long and de-burred all the edges then, as my wheels were

already off, I worked on the floor. Method as explained to me: “Firstly, thump a cold chisel in between the tyre and the rim to give the angle a start, then knock in the angle, one corner first. When that has a start, smack the angle home as far as it will go. Move round the tyre a few inches and repeat the process with the remaining two angles. By the time they’ve all been beaten home the tyre will be free of the rim on that section and the rest can be freed off using just the hammer.”
You can quite clearly see the years of rust I have to say I was sceptical when he first explained it to me and though I didn’t say anything, I thought he was having me on, but all I can say is “try it!” It’s always good when the simple solution works and it’s worked for me! It’s always good when the simple solution works and it’s not just a fluke; I’ve now used it on four rear wheels, the ones illustrated and both on my 20 (I managed to puncture both those on the same day) but as it is quite literally a ten minute job to get the tyres off with this method, I wasn’t too long off the road. I did try leaving the wheels on but found the inner rim seal was impossible to break as there wasn’t the Please mention THE VINTAGE SCENE when responding to advertisements

required space to swing the hammer, however, it’s much easier to fit the new tyres (or replace the old ones) with the wheels on the tractor as that enables gravity to lend a hand, an extremely reliable helper and free to boot! By the way, I got £80 for the old tyres on eBay, much better than carving them up to make flip-flops or starting a bonfire!!

his is the story of a Ferguson TED 20. Registration LWD 149. 1st registration 04.01.1952 VIN TED 2388? Manufactured 12 March 1948 During the 1960s I was employed by Twyford Seeds Ltd, Adderbury, Banbury. Oxon, as their trials officer. I used to drive the Fergie to drill, spray and harvest the trial plots. After I left Twyfords the tractor went to Cambridge Plant Breeders.
Henry in 1965 harvesting trial plots In 1952 it was registered to a man in Moulton, Northampton.
The 3rd registration was on 12.07.2011 to a member of another major club. He managed to do a full restoration with most of its faults corrected. Clutch cleaned, brakes adjusted and electrics sorted. Finally a complete respray having taken all the component parts apart. I have photos of all the restoration process. After the restoration it was sold to a man in Maryculter, Aberdeenshire, Scotland on 12 10.2011. I managed to get all the Registration Certificates (V5C) via the DVLA.
Lorry from Scotland who delivered Fergie So having managed to trace its history and really for sentimental reasons, I negotiated a price and LWD 149 arrived here from Scotland in 2015
The 2nd registration was in the name of a man in the Ferguson Club on 29.09 1981. He then sold his land and gave the Fergie to the local council for children to play on! At some point in its life it was painted green. It was discovered that it was a converted TEA to TED.

'What has he bought now... The Cross Tractor' By Emily Critchlow, A Ferguson Club Member his does not mean that the tractor is cross but that Derek Cross introduced Grandpa to it! Derek is a fellow Ferguson Club member. Apparently it belonged to Derek’s brother-in-law who had recently died, and the tractor had been in a shed, which had collapsed onto it, for between 50 and 60 years.
T
Grandpa and Jim collected it on Monday 24th May 2021, and got it onto the trailer using the new winch but with a double pull as 3 tyres were flat. Back at Tractor Heaven they were able to appraise it a little better after they had unloaded it and towed it round to its new resting place. They found that the engine was free, it steered, you can select all gears and starter switch, the clutch was stuck but came free during the tow and the hydraulic arms are free. What more could one possibly want for £200? So what is it? It is a 1951/2 TED 20 in surprisingly unmolested condition. Sadly the identity plate is missing. It has had a heavy owner they suspect, as the seat spring has been welded. There is a lot of

wear in the offside rear track rod end which will have to be replaced but there is very little wear elsewhere in the steering. The lift arm ends show very little wear but the levelling boxes, it has two, are shot, but that is to be expected really. It will certainly play another day.Grandpa fiddled about removing seized items from the hydraulic linkage but Jim and he had a better look at it in the afternoon of the 7th June. They had established that the engine was free, so Jim decided to do an oil and filter change and see if the old girl would go. The coil is as rusty as a horseshoe, the ignition leads are virtually non existent so they 'borrowed' a cap and leads from another, the points cleaned up so they gave her a go...nothing. Time to remove the carb and Jim tinkered and then put it back. It should be said Grandpa had cleaned the fuel bowl out and given her some new fuel. This time with a bit of a struggle, mainly due to a rubbish battery he had provided, she was up and running and even the original oil pressure gauge showed 60 psi. It is a wonder the pipe to the gauge stood up to the

pressure as it is so rusty. Anyway she ran very sweetly if a bit smokey, what a result. Amazingly all this took just 2 hours work! Four tyres are scrap so Grandpa is in the process of removing them ready for blasting and painting the wheels. Monday 14th June they meet up again and the objective was to be able to start her whilst sat on the seat and to retain as many of the original parts as possible. During the week Grandpa had freed off the throttle control rod which was seized in the aluminium casting which supports the front of the fuel tank. They started with the on/off starter switch which they removed having cut the wires from the loom, which they had decided was of no more service. Sadly one of the small screws, that hold the wires in, sheared so a suitable replacement was found. Jim moved his attention to the ignition light which dismantled without drama and even the bulb still had a sound filament! He then turned his expertise again to the carb, as a service kit had been found. They had moved onto the control box which looks very clean but were unable to undo the screws which retain the wires, so a modern push on terminal type was used and they crimped suitable ends onto the
Please mention THE VINTAGE SCENE when responding to advertisements
loom. Next they turned their attention to the gear lever actuated starter switch. No problem for Jim to remove, but he had to be careful not to lose the split pin and pin into the bellhousing! It was dismantled and cleaned it up easily and it was checked electrically and refitted. By mid afternoon they were ready to test out their work. She was most reluctant to start and required a ‘whiff’ but when she was running she was so sweet and is by far the tractor with the slowest tick-over speed Grandpa has. You will notice that they haven’t actually achieved their objective yet as Jim was not on the seat when he started it because he was administering the ‘whiff’! At this point a whirring noise was heard which turned out to be the dynamo running as a motor. This was not rectified but the terminals on the control box disconnected and Jim was able to start the old girl from the seat using the key and the gear lever. On this occasion he also drove backwards and forwards to test gears and clutch which were OK. On another occasion when they met they were unable to remove the temperature sensor from the housing so had to remove the complete housing and get a replacement which has yet to be fitted because Grandpa had been offered yet another tractor, this time a ‘garage find’ known as ‘Peter’ Tractor’ but this really should be another article.

Tern Valley Tractor Road Run On Sunday 25th July 2021 Photos and report by Barry Job
T
he Tern Valley Vintage Machinery Trust has been returning to normality by holding monthly meetings once again and organising a tractor road run. This was well organised by Mike Johnson and Gerry Hobday and was held on Sunday 25th July. Starting at the Stoke on Tern Village Hall, Shropshire, the 20 mile route of country lanes and off road sections passed south and east through Ollerton, Hinstock and Sambrook to reach the half way stop at Mow Cop Farm. Suitably refreshed the drivers headed north and west through Cheswardine and Hinstock to return to the starting point by mid afternoon. 52 tractors participated with a group travelling all the way from
Lymm in Cheshire, they said how impressed they were with the Shropshire countryside and would gladly return for future runs. The weather forecast leading up to the event was dire with thunder and heavy rain anticipated, but fortunately the day was dry and sunny. The day passed off smoothly without any breakdowns. The event raised £600 to be divided equally between the local Saint Peter's Church and Stoke on Tern Village Hall. For more information on the Trust's activities see www.tvvmt.co.uk
The most unusual tractor on the run was Robert Peacock's 1992 Antares made by the Italian company SAME

Seven Gables Working Day at Mullenan, Derry/Londonderry on Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th August by WilLy Carson ou’re just the man I’m looking for,” said a voice behind me. It was Eddie Meenan, stalwart of the vintage scene in Ireland’s North West, “We’ll be holding a working day next year, and maybe you’d have time to come over and bring your camera.”
“Y
A conversation followed during which we put together a plan to document the ploughing, cultivations, sowing, harvesting, and threshing of a field of barley right on the Donegal border in the Foyle valley. Little did we think that further lockdowns during the proposed ploughing and cultivation period would interrupt our endeavours. Eventually restrictions eased and, as the harvest working day approached, all eyes turned to the weather forecast. Would it stay dry? By the time of the event, much of the sixteen-acre field had been harvested, leaving enough to keep the vintage enthusiasts occupied and creating space for the rows of vintage tractors, machinery, cars, lorries and steam engines which turned up, adding to the spectacle. It may have been cloudy, but it remained dry and the crop was in good shape when the Warren Scanlon took to the seat of his Ferguson FE35 ‘grey and gold’ and, with his father, Peter, at the controls of their Albion 5A binder, soon they were leaving a row of sheaves behind them. Owen McColgan and Sean Toland wasted no time pitching a load onto the trailer behind Tony Rodgers’s 1957 Industrial MF35 before

heading back up the hill to the waiting Ransomes thresh mill. Driven by a contractor spec Field Marshall Series II, the thresher fed the threshed grain into jute bags and the straw into a Jones belted to a New Performance Super Major. There was a chance for the vintage combine to show that despite its years, it was still capable of cutting a sward or two before the pick-up baler cleared the straw into bales. There was work for ploughmen in the next section of the field and what had been yellow was soon turned brown side up. In a special enclosure set aside for the Ferguson enthusiasts, Chris Gallagher demonstrated the abilities of the Ferguson ‘Butterfly’ reversible plough before attaching various implements to display the versatility of Harry Ferguson’s revolutionary three point-linkage system. It was during the cultivations demonstration that yours truly found himself in a spot of bother. My wee black notebook which has been my constant companion at vintage events for four years and contains contact details and photo captions for thousands of photographs went missing. I retraced my steps across the ploughed and disked ground with a growing sense of the futility of my quest until at last I found it, just where the Track Marshall with the discs was about to make its next pass. Phew!! Despite the difficulties and uncertainties which face event organisers due to ‘you know what’ the Seven Gables Working Day, held in memory of Nellie McDaid and Pat Bradley, was a great success raising £8,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society and Ward C7 Antrim Area Hospital.

Horsepower to Airpower Threshing and Tractor Show at Hanger Café in Miller, MO. on Saturday 10th July ince the late 1880’s, right up to the present-day, farmers used Steam Traction Engines for farming. Whether in be for plowing, threshing wheat/oats or any other farm work that was needed to be done. For the ones who may not know what I mean by steam tractors they are only ran on wood or coal. No type of fuel other than that of wood or coal.

I recently attended the Threshing and Tractor Show in Miller, Missouri. It was put on by the Horsepower to Airpower Association and takes place at the Hanger Café. It will be a time that I will never forget. They demonstrated how farmers used the equipment; not only the steam engines, but early model tractors to do their farm work as well. They also used the engines and tractors to crush rock for roads.
Dana Erickson owner of Engine and Thresher
Not only was I fortunate to photograph the event, but as well as joining in the fun to learn how the farmers use to do it.. There were so many people there that were more than willing to jump in and learn how farming worked back then. The Horsepower to Airpower Association displayed a 1917 20 H.P Nichols and Shepard Steam Traction Engine and an early model Nichols and Shepard Red River Special Thresher, owned by Dana and Robyn Erickson, but ran by Engineer Melissa Fox and a 1935

Let us just say, I’m now in the market for a tractor for myself and an engine for my husband! I encourage anyone who has not had the opportunity to attend one of the shows to go attend and join in. The shows are all over the place; just keep an eye out.and I promise you won’t regret attending. Photos and article by Crystal Brown at LilCountry Photography

Grantown East Vintage Machinery Day at the Highland Heritage & Cultural Centre, Scotland on Sunday 15th August Report by Mitchell Ross, Operations Manager he history of Vintage Rallies at Grantown East is a short one. However, we hope it will continue to grow into a well-attended event which people can look forward to on their calendar.
T
Grantown East held its first Vintage Rally in 2019, during our first season of opening. We opened or should I say reopened on the 2nd of November 2018, 50 years to the day that the station was closed as part of the Beeching cuts in 1968. Our first rally attended by various vintage tractors, machinery, implements, stationary engines and steam traction engines was a huge success. It rivalled our opening day in terms of attendance and was an event we firmly planned to have as an annual gathering on our calendar… Then “2020” happened, and the world changed. We were just beginning to gear up for our second tourist season when Covid struck and we, along with everyone, were forced into lockdown. Fast forward 18 months or so and we found ourselves in a much better position, positively looking towards the future and with imposed restrictions easing we began to look to host events again, albeit in a slightly different way. After successfully hosting a few events earlier in the summer, we were again approached by Mr Green and Mr Calder, two local gentlemen heavily involved in the vintage tractor world about reviving the previous event held at Grantown East in 2019.
Rover with a PTO that was able to drive a working vintage grain mill. We were lucky enough to even have a couple of model steam traction engines and a steam waggon. Unfortunately, quite a few of our steam powered attendees from 2019 were unable to bring live steam power to this year’s event, as lack of an active calendar meant that understandably most of them opted to not put their boilers on test for safety certification and insurance purposes. We were in a similar position ourselves with our Tinkerbell steam locomotive needing a boiler test in 2020, and us deciding to postpone it until we knew we would be able to open again. All in all, the day was very much a success with enjoyment had by all that attended. We benefited from some great weather and the feedback from everyone, exhibitors and members of the public was overwhelmingly positive. With the future looking bright, and with the aid of some aerial photography from our drone, we are already planning a bigger and better event for 2022. We estimate we can double the capacity of exhibitors, whilst still being able to do a miniature run out on our events field. Readers can keep an eye out on our latest developments and future event plans by visiting www.grantowneast.com, following us on Facebook by searching @GrantownEast, or Instagram @grantown_east.
Without hesitation we agreed and started planning for an event on Sunday the 15th of August 2021. This year’s event was again very well attended, with even more, tractors, machinery, implements, vintage cars and some bikes. We estimate we had in the region of 30 tractors of various vintages and marques. 5 vintage road vehicles, including a Series 1 Land

Mill Meece Pumping Station By Barry Job
I
t has been a long wait. After nine years the mighty horizontal compound tandem steam engines by Ashton Frost and by Hathorn Davey at Mill Meece in Staffordshire are now back in steam. The pumping station was commissioned in 1914 to compliment the nearby Hatton Pumping station to supply the expanding Staffordshire Pottery Towns with water. They undertook this vital task pumping 5 million gallons of water every day until December 1979 when they were replaced by electric pumps. Fortunately they went straight into preservation. The engines and site have been maintained by a dedicated band of volunteers and has regularly been open to the public, but in 2012 corrosion spelt the end of fires being lit in the Lancashire boilers and the pumping station reverted to static viewing. Severn Trent Water, the owners, commissioned contractors to rebuild the boiler flues and boiler supports and reinstate the boilers and pipework in addition to other vital tasks around the site. With this work completed the coronavirus restrictions prevented the site being opened to the public until the official opening by Sarah Stimpson, Head of Severn Trent Property Services, on Saturday 14th August. The day was marked by a rally for stationary engines and classic cars, Sunday the 15th was for stationary engines and classic motorcycles. Both days were extremely well supported. There was a varied selection of stationary engines, both large and
Sarah Stimpson, Head of Severn Trent Property Services, performed the official opening ceremony small, with some rare examples from America plus traditional British makes such as Ruston Hornsby and Lister. There were considerably more classic cars on site than has been seen on previous open days and similarly on the Sunday with over 200 motorcycles in attendance during the day. The public also attended in good numbers, the event was free to come in but this was more than compensated for by the tea room takings and donations. Coronavirus permitting, the site will be open for static viewing Sunday afternoons with a series of steaming weekends coupled with rallys at specified weekends. Daddy’s hand was too big to fit down the bore, so I had to oil the cylinder walls. It felt so gloopy and weird. I proceeded to oil the rings, piston and piston ring compressor. We adjusted the piston ring compressor to fit the piston and then I tapped it down with the wooden handle of a hammer. While I lined up

valves, which was easy, and added a shiny new gasket from www.stationaryengineparts.com. The engine is starting to come together nicely and looks shiny. Before the head went on, Daddy showed me how to find top dead centre – that was interesting. Daddy used a polishing wheel to shine up the brass head nuts. We tightened the head down and fitted the rockers to the push rods, and then set the tappet gap using a feeler gauge. Next, we bolted down the magneto and set the spark plug timing. It was nearly 6pm, and time to go home, but we couldn’t leave it there. The carb hadn’t been rebuilt, so Daddy sprayed a small squirt of brake cleaner into the inlet port, swung the starting handle and the engine barked a couple of times. “Well, we can’t go home now!” said Dad. We stayed until we had the carb rebuilt and fitted it to the engine. Another test run – Daddy put petrol in the float bowl, turned the handle and off my engine went!! We went home happy but exhausted at 9.30pm. On the next visit we added the fuel tank, exhaust, governor rods, the hopper cover, rocker cover and transfers. My engine is complete! It was put back onto the old trolley for now and it’s ready for its first show.

School Yard Crank Up '
Daddy and Mummy organised an event called 'The School Yard Crank Up' especially for stationary engines to help raise some money for my school PTA. We didn’t know how many people would turn up but even if we raised £100 it would be worth it. The fun started the night before when we went to collect my engine, toolbox, watering can, oil can, metal polish, sand paper, rags, petrol and a barrel all from the barn. We used my Granda’s loading shovel to lift the engine level with the back of Mummy’s car – she wasn’t too happy about this, but in it went ready for the drive home!
Simpson were there with their three Lister D’s. William’s had a milking machine attached. Sammy Gault and his Granda brought an Associated Line ‘hit and miss’ engine and two more Lister Ds. In total there were fifteen engines, a good show for our first effort. We hope the word will spread and next year there will be lots more engines on show. We’ve already started on my next project. Find out what it is in my next diary page…
Rebecca
The next morning Daddy wakened me saying, “Today’s the day!” I jumped out of bed and got ready; I couldn’t believe the day was finally here. I was so excited. We arrived early to set up. We were filling the water barrels when the first visiting engine arrived; it belonged to Trevor and Diane Cooke from Omagh. It was a Frank Hartop Model M (quite a rare engine). The next engine out was my very own Lister D. James Courtney was next with his Lister D radiator (very swanky!), complete with water pump display. The legendary Andy Catterson was next with his Lister D, H3 water pump and Bushmills Distillery whiskey barrel. William, Harry & Hannah

Welcome home Alice! by Heather Dodd at staring out at the fantastic view – green and golden fields, horses and of course the odd vintage tractor creeping into vision’s edge. Phone in hand, I diverted my attention to look at the local news activity on Facebook. The name ‘Emma Long’ jumped out from one of the comments. I recognised this name, but I cannot think from where …
S
Rewind some fifteen to twenty years … Dad had a few tractors about the place, and he wanted another! He decided to sell two and purchase a diesel Fergie to take to ploughing matches. The chosen two were a little grey petrol/paraffin T20 and an Allis-Chalmers model B. My former colleague, Zoe, was looking for a tractor to use for topping the paddock at her newly acquired home ‘Toad Hall’; the T20 was ideal for this, whilst the model B was much desired by her father, Frank. The two little tractors were dropped off at Toad Hall. Unfortunately, the purchase of the diesel Fergie fell through, but the quest for one was later fulfilled, and the tractor which Dad purchased went on to become the chariot which conveyed him on his final journey. In his later years, Dad would often reminisce about the model B, fondly known as ‘Alice', pondering on where it might be, and expressing regret for selling it. I had long since lost touch with Zoe and Frank, and so never thought to pursue the matter.
Frank had sold Alice to. I dropped that person, 'Nigel', a text asking if he still owned Alice and asking if so, would he like to sell her. All was then quiet on the text front, until about 1.00am when Nigel text back to say he was still the owner, Alice was in need of a total restore and to give him a call. I was so excited and had to wait through the endless hours for a more sociable time to make the call. I wasn’t disappointed though, Nigel said he would sell Alice to me for the same price he paid for her. That afternoon, my long-suffering partner, Robin, and I hitched up the trailer, dropped by a cashpoint, then headed over to Nigel’s place. Nigel took us to the back of his yard. We stood in front of a very large concrete pipe (the sort that has a ladder in) and there behind it, with hedge growing around and over them, were two orange Allis-Chalmer tractors, both in a sorry state; one was a diesel and the other a petrol. “That’s her, in the back. Well, I’m pretty sure that’s the one I got off Frank”. I wasn't encouraged by Nigel's confidence, and have to confess at this point I was thinking this could be any tractor! Unfortunately, I didn’t know the registration number of Alice.
Fast forward back to present day … So, why did the name ‘Emma Long’ ring a bell? On a hunch I messaged her enquiring if she was related to Zoe and Frank, “Why yes, Zoe is my aunt”. I had struck ‘gold’! I asked if Frank still had the model B. “No, he’s moved house a few times so the tractor was sold on. I will ask him who he sold it to” she replied.
Robin climbed over the concrete pipe and went into the hedge for a closer look. He shouted out “yep, this is the one, I’d recognise that step anywhere”. I didn’t know what he was talking about, but apparently Dad had had a white step fitted to the tractor, and there it was on the little tractor buried in the hedge! As Robin looked her over, he rocked the steering wheel which promptly snapped off in his hand!
Later that evening Emma messaged me with the name and number of the person
After a bit of bartering, a deal was struck and I handed over the cash.
Nigel lifted the concrete pipe out of the way using a telehandler. He then lifted the diesel Allis-Chalmers out of the way, before swinging our ‘Alice’ clean out of the hedge and onto the back of our trailer! After strapping her on and power hosing her down, we headed back to Hempton to surprise my mum. I was overjoyed; within 24 hours Alice had been tracked down, purchased, lifted out of a hedgerow, and was back home. She is indeed in need of a total restore; in fact, she is completely seized. Yes, I know I paid a fair bit considering the condition she is in, but for the joy and comfort her return has brought she is worth every penny. After feeling a little daunted to start with, Robin has made good progress thus far dismantling Alice. We will feature her restore in the coming issues, and we hope to have her back out parading at shows. Of one thing, I am certain, and that is that my Dad was with us the day we headed over to Nigel’s; I could feel his happiness emanating through myself. Mum didn't think Dad had a workshop manual for the model B, but after some searching through his books I found one, in mint condition, and on turning the page I found strangely Dad had signed his name, ‘Philip Dodd’, just inside. Needless to say, this manual is treasured and not allowed anywhere near the messy restore!

BRITISH PLOUGHING CHAMPIONSHIPS CELEBRATES 70 YEARS at Mindrum Mill, Northumberland on 9th and 10th October 2021
T
he British National Ploughing Championships & Country Festival will be celebrating 70 years when the event is held on 9th and 10th October 2021 at Mindrum Mill, Northumberland, by kind permission of D Harvey & Son. In all that time, this will be only the third time the event has been held in the county. Entries are coming in from all sides for the event. Space for trade stands, shopping stalls and agricultural machinery demonstrations is being snapped up after many shows have been cancelled. As there are fewer to attend, visitors are actively looking for somewhere else to go and this year, the 70th British National Ploughing Championships & Country Festival will give them something different than the norm. Ploughing entries are coming from ploughmen and women from all over the country with some competitors travelling well over 400 miles to take part in the Championships from as far afield as Devon, the Isle of Wight and Kent. They will compete in one of fifteen different ploughing classes over the two days – including world style conventional and reversible, vintage classes for trailing, hydraulic and classic ploughs, horticultural ploughing, crawlers, tractor high cut and magnificent heavy horses. There are also tractor club classes for Ferguson, Ford & Fordson and David Brown. In five classes, the top 10 competitors from the first day will take part in a Plough-Off Final on the Sunday to find the British Champion in each section.
40
There will be something for everyone alongside the ploughing competitions, from steam ploughing engines, vintage tractors and machinery displays and working vintage demonstrations. Machinery manufacturers and local dealers will have an area for demonstrating the most up-to-date machines they have for sale and for those farmers who want to shop or browse, there will be agricultural trade stands with everything from tyres to tools. More shopping will be available with shopping stalls and country crafts. The site at Mindrum Mill is looking good and the crops are almost ready to be harvested. The 250 acre site is very close to the Scottish border, between Wooler and Kelso and is sown with wheat and oil seed rape. After a recent site visit, President of the Society of Ploughmen, organisers of the event and host farmer, Ian Harvey said, “I have been planning the crop rotation around this great event since 2018 and there is a lot of local and national interest and excitement about the Championships coming to North Northumberland next to the Scottish border. It will be an honour to host such an outstanding event!” Main sponsors of the Championships are Bridgestone/Firestone and Continental Tyres and further support has been given by Tama, Cereals Event, Ivor King, Friends of Ferguson Heritage and CBS. The event is a huge outdoor affair, so social distancing should be very easy and it will be run according to government legislation at the time. For further information visit www.ploughmen.co.uk
