40 years ago I bought a 1952 TED 20 p/p tractor from a remote Herefordshire farm, where we spent many family holidays, situated in the River Lugg Valley.

That summer when we went for our summer holiday, I towed a borrowed home-made trailer. The suspension was made from two old Citroen reclaimed rear axles. The tow car was one of the first Vauxhall Cavalier diesel hatchbacks of the late 70’s. Unexpectedly, our ginger cat produced six ginger kittens, just before departure, so they all came too housed in an old baby’s carry cot in the boot of the car!

Back then the A14 did not exist, neither did many town bypasses; so, the return journey home was quite an adventure. The outward journey was further south and after Stow-on-the-Wold, the only point of interest would be the fledgling GWR railway at Toddington, not far from Tewkesbury. Town centres, threrefore, had to be driven through; Leominster, Bromyard, Worcester and Stratford upon Avon where we stayed the night. Then onto Warwick,

Upon his death the tractor was left to deteriorate, in one of the many old wooden barns, with other interesting machines including two old horse drawn 4 wheel haywains.

I am now pretty ancient, and it isn’t used very much. In the past it has carried fallen trees from beside the River Stour, which runs nearby, using an old 4 wheel trailer so the wood could be cut and split for our wood burning Instoves.Summertime,

I arranged to buy the tractor from his widow, who now employed the Shepherd as the Farm Manager. Upon inspecting the Ferguson more closely, I found the cylinder head gasket had failed. So I arranged to spend the next Easter holiday there so I could not only replace the necessary gaskets but also decoke the engine and grind in the valves.

I was a motor mechanic in the Royal Air Force for my National Service when Standard Vanguards were the everyday mode of transport, so I was very familiar with their engines being almost identical to my Ferguson.

The tractor’s previous owner farmed a large flock of mainly Suffolk sheep, and a large herd of Herefordshire beef cattle. In his latter years, he only used the tractor for his own personal use travelling to the local cattle market and around the farm

We have a large ornate and beloved garden but, to get to my storage and tractor shed, a very long herbaceous border has to be negotiated. So when it was designed, the lawn dividing the flower beds was made wide enough, using old engineering bricks, to the same wheelbase as the Ferguson.

Ploughing entries are now in and over 240 ploughmen and women will be travelling from all corners of Great Britain to take part in the Championships, vying for the titles in their respective discipline. The top 10 reversible and conventional ploughers from the first day will compete in a ‘Plough-Off’ Final on the second day, hoping to win the title and a place to represent England in next year’s World or European Championships. The top 10 competitors in the vintage trailed, hydraulic, classic and classic reversible classes will again win a place in their respective ‘Plough-Off’ Final again to win the title and hopefully a place to compete in the 2023 European Vintage Ploughing

True horsepower: how the Toyota Hilux is helping Cannon Hall Farm’s Shire horse project

The Nicholson family has owned the 200-acre farm for 65 years, and Rob and Dave’s father was brought up in an era of Shire horses and farmed with them.

About the Shire horse

The Invincible X model has a 201bhp 2.8-litre engine, while every model in the Hilux range can carry loads of up to 1,030kg and tow up to 3.5 tonnes.

Cannon Hall Farm opened to the public in 1989 and now receives 335,000 visitors a year to its farm attractions, shop and restaurants. It is also the star of Channel 5’s Summer on the Farm Live.

There are many similarities between the Shire horse and Hilux in terms of horsepower, with the Shire horse famous as a working animal in a variety of industries and the legendary Hilux renowned for its versatility and unstop pable character, for business or leisure, conquering the North Pole, Icelandic volcanoes and Antarctica. Hilux is ideal for farm work as it is a tough, strong and extremely capable, on any road and in any conditions.

Rob and Dave ordered their vehicle from Burrows Toyota in Barnsley, and while waiting for delivery they were loaned a top-of-the range Hilux Invincible X. “We used it for a couple of hospital runs recently,” said Rob. “We collected Orchid, our 14-year-old Shire and her foal, Rosie, from Rainbow Equine Hospital, 100 miles away. Rosie nearly died soon after birth – she had some thing called ‘dummy foal syndrome’ where she thought she was still in the womb and was refusing to suckle.”

More recently the team had to rush their eight-year-old Shetland, Pony M, to the same hospital. She was heavily pregnant and was suffering from catastrophic energy failure as she had stopped feeding. The vet was going to put her down but said there was a chance the hospital could save her, so the horse trailer was hooked up to the Hilux to take her there.

The Shire horse became popular in the late 19th century to perform farm jobs such as ploughing. It became increasingly popular during the Industrial Revolution when it was used to carry or pull heavy loads over long distances, for example towing barges, or drays for breweries. However technological advances, including the advent of railways and tractors, reduced demand for them, so their numbers declined, from more than a million in their heyday, to a few thousand in the 1960s. Numbers began to increase in the 1970s, but the breed is still considered ‘at risk’ by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. Today Shire horses are used for forestry and leisure activities, including riding and carriage driving.

* 1924, at a British exhibition, a pair of horses was estimated to have pulled a starting load equal to 50 tonne.

and Dave Nicholson, owners of Cannon Hall Farm in South Yorkshire, recently took on a Toyota Hilux to help care for their growing Shire horse collection, as part of their conservation efforts for these distinctive heavy horses.

Rob

Rob said: “It seemed right to invest time and money in Shire horses. They helped us win world wars, so it’s unthinkable to think they could fade away. We thought we’d do our bit to preserve and safeguard them for future generations. We bought our first Shire horse eight years ago. There are only 850 breeding mares in the country, so it’s important to keep the bloodline going. We currently have five and are about to buy our sixth, and we are now a recognised Shire horse centre.”

The farm’s growing Shire horse population meant that the Nicholsons needed a reliable and robust vehicle with good off-road, load-carrying and towing capabilities to help them day to day. Rob Nicholson explained: “We’ve always liked these vehicles and aspired to own one. The Hilux has more power than other trucks we’ve had before and the gears seem just right for towing.”

“I went with my grandfather to the vintage rallies and that gave me an interest in old tractors and machinery. He had a Zetor 4011 that he used to cart peats home from the moss. When I turned sixteen he gave me the Zetor but I couldn’t afford to restore it and, like most young lads, I was thinking about having my own car. When I was seventeen and I had passed my driving test, I sold the tractor and put the money towards a Renault Clio. I spent a lot of my spare time working on stationary engines but eventually the time came to buy a vintage tractor and I knew it was going to be a Zetor 4011.”

Even from its fledgling years, the Zetor marque has been popular in Ireland so it’s not surprising that Sammy was soon on the trail of a possible purchase, “I was at a show chatting to Ian Taylor, a local Zetor enthusiast and he pointed me in the right direction. After another call, I went to see a 4011, had a drive round a field to see what it needed and eventually persuaded the owner to sell it.

This bold revolution in manufacturing was based on a simple principal; to build a range of tractors from as many common parts as possible. Power outputs were increased by adding more cylinders of the same bore and stroke thus effectively using the same design for 2 cylinder 25hp, 3 cylinder 37hp and 4 cylinder 45hp tractors. Standardisation of parts extended to components from the front axle right through to the rear hitch, making life much easier for the production engineers, the store men, the servicing staff and ultimately the farmer.

Gault remembers how, as a child, he spent time with his grandfather, learning about stationary engines and climbing up to play on the old tractor.

Sammy

The Zbrojovka Works can trace its origins back to the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire when it was a major arms manufacturer. Between the wars it was engaged in the production of bicycles, cars, aircraft engines and typewriters but it wasn’t until after the Second World War that the production of tractors began in the newly liberated Czechoslovakian factory. Revealed to the agricultural world in March 1946, the Zetor ‘Model 25’, powered by a two cylinder, four stroke, 25hp diesel engine, with a drive train incorporating six forward gears, two reverse gears and a differential lock, was ahead of its Western competitors in technical innovation. Lacking the sales infrastructure of the mighty Ford Empire or the marketing flair of Harry Ferguson the newly formed brand began in more humble fashion, building just 28 tractors per day. By the mid-fifties the 42hp four cylinder ‘Super 35’ had arrived but Zetor were about to take the first steps into a much more modern concept in tractor production, the UR1 or ‘Unified Range’.

Released in 1962, the ‘4011’ was the largest in what was to be known as the ‘0’ series. Its technical specification included a four cylinder engine with a bore and stroke of 95 x 110mm giving a capacity of 3120cc. The transmission featured 10 forward speeds with a live PTO which incorporated ground drive. The ‘Zetormatic’ system controlled the hydraulic lift with automatic depth control and optional hydraulic hitch. The independent braking arrangement was also hydraulic, particularly advanced when compared to mainstream tractors. All things considered the UR1 range was a ground breaker so it might be helpful to explain the individual model numbers in the range. The first digit refers to the number of cylinders and the second digit, the series while the last two numbers refer to the wheel configuration: ‘11’ is for two wheel drive, ‘45’ for four wheel drive.

It needed a bit of work before I could take it on the road, there were no brakes and the steering was all over the place, the electrics needed a complete overhaul, the headlights looked like they were winking at you, the mudguards were rough and the tyres were on the way out. On the plus side, the engine was going like a clock and started very easily, especially for a four cylinder engine of that era. I fixed the brakes, patched the mud guards and tidied it up so that it would be safe on the road, phoned the NFU and sorted out some insurance and headed off to my first show. We made it there and home with any problems.”

Over the next few years Sammy was a regular participant at local rallies and road runs, always driving the Zetor

“I went right through the steering system replacing the front axle pivot bearings, the kingpin bushes, the wheel bearings, the track rod ends and then refurbished the steering box. The main parts of the skid unit were working as they should so I just changed the oils and filters. The seat wasn’t in great shape so I bought a second hand unit and made one good one out of the pair. Then I cleaned the skid unit with wire brushes and sandpaper and painted it with a brush.

Sammy’s preparations for road runs were about to be tested… properly tested. “I had always wanted to complete a tour of Northern Ireland and raise some money for the Air Ambulance at the same time. My grandfather still had an old cut-down caravan that he used to take to weekend shows so I hooked that behind the Zetor made a simple sort of a plan, drove up to Portballintrae on the North Coast and at 10 o’clock on the 4th August I headed off on my trip.”

Heading east from his start point, Sammy followed the Atlantic coast, turning south with the Antrim glens on his right and the Irish Sea lapping against the rocks to his left. There can’t be many more scenic roads to begin a marathon challenge. The Zetor 4011 is no slouch on the road, capable of 20mph, so the first stage of the 500 mile route was completed by mid-afternoon and Belfast was in sight. Sammy swapped rural roads for city streets just as the evening rush hour traffic reached its peak, “Going out of the city on the dual carriageway, my heart was in my mouth every time I looked behind. I seemed only a matter of time before somebody ran into the back of me. That evening I had arranged to park up in the Cooke family’s yard and by 9.30pm I arrived with 180 miles behind me. The next morning I set off through Co. Down and followed the coast road along the foot of the Mourne Mountains and then turned along the side of Carlingford Lough towards Newry. I headed west roughly following the border and made good progress through the after noon. The secret is to keep moving, so by 5pm I was in Enniskillen and heading for the Sperrins where I had arranged to pull in for the night at Andy Catterson’s. I arrived there about 10pm, in time for a steak dinner! That crossed another 220 miles off the map. On the third day, I made my way up to the North Coast again and just three miles from the finish the tractor stuttered to a halt. Thankfully it was just some dirt in the fuel tap so I fixed that Portballintrae.”droveenoughhandyandonto

Sammy efforts raised over £3000 for the Air Ambulance and made his child hood dreams of driving a Zetor 4011 come true.

“In 2020 I decided that the time had come to restore the tractor. The mudguards were replaced with new old stock items and I repaired the hinges on the bonnet and then sent all the tinwork, the fuel tank and the wheel rims to be professionally sprayed.

“The electrical problems weren’t so easy to fix. The loom was beyond repair so I decided the time was right to convert the charging system from dynamo to the more reliable alternator. I don’t mind coming home from events in the dark so it makes sense. My father is a motor mechanic so we downloaded a wiring diagram and he started pulling wires around the tractor until we had a new, more modern loom. I learned a lot from my father as we worked through the job. The only job left was to replace the tyres. I found some second hand rear tyres from a JCB digger which are wider than standard but they are more comfortable on the road.”

under its own power and ignoring any discomfort that the weather might produce.

Soon we were picking the best bits from the two pumps and cleaning them up with the parts washer and a scraper. Next we used paint stripper, the wire wheel in the angle grinder and sandpaper to prepare the parts for painting. First I brushed on a coat of Metalflux to prevent any more rust then, the next day, I gave it all a coat of red Bonda primer and when it had dried, I painted it in Mid Brunswick Green. I was thinking that it would be a good looking engine and water pump combo. We bought some gasket paper from Stationary Engine Parts (www.stationaryengineparts.com) to make a new gasket for the end of the pump body. I held the paper against the four studs and tapped with my ball pien hammer until the holes were made. Dad tidied them up with his pen knife and then I slid the sheet into place and tapped gently around the outside edge until the gasket was the proper shape. When that was done, I held it tight to the pump body and tapped out the big hole in the middle.

The Traction Engine Club of Ulster’s show at Ballee started again after Covid 19, and we showed my Lister D in the stationary engine pen. The engine ran smoothly for the two day show while we went to the autojumble where I bought a big Aladdin Pink Paraffin can and a

It was a lot easier to unassemble and the cross pin vibrated out as Dad was tapping back the rope seal collars. Thankfully, we didn’t need to go near the press again.

I tapped out the outside edges.

Then I tapped around the inside edge.

I picked the bottom piston because it isn’t as badly pitted.

The next week we tried to run up the D but there was no compression so we took out the spark plug, took off the exhaust, turned the flywheel until the exhaust valve was open and blew compressed air in the plug hole. Lots of soot came flying out of the exhaust port, so it was good that mummy didn’t have any washing on the line! There must have been soot jammed on the exhaust vale seat stopping the valve from closing properly because the compression returned and the engine fired up on the next attempt. It definitely needs something to make it work harder, something like a water pump.

downfall as a non-academic proved to be the starting point at school. Roger was often found either outside a class room or outside the headmaster`s office door, awaiting six of the best! However, he soon wised up to the fact that if you put an exercise book down the back of your trousers it wasn`t so painful!

Eventually, Roger met the love of his life, Shirley, and after getting married they had 3 lovely children, all of whom I know have inherited his sense of fun and mischief.

You would think this may have quietened him down a little, but “oh no not Roger”, he was going to carry on enjoying life to the full. Once whilst away on one of the National Tractor Road Runs, we were all enjoying a meal in one of the local pubs when Roger appeared at an open window, late as usual. I remember Richard Vincent “Turbo” lifting his legs and pushing him through said window, and onto the dinner table; Roger had arrived!!!

7/7/1960 – 13/8/2022

Eulogy byPete Evans

Roger’s

Yet again, whilst away on a National Tractor Road Run his great friend Jimmy Barret, who knew Roger very well and who was fully aware of his fear of goats, caught one in the field next to the pub and popped it into Rogers’ bedroom. All was well, until Roger decided it was bedtime. On arriving at his room for the night, all hell broke loose. Roger always maintained he was not afraid, but insisted the goat was “spitting and snapping in a most unfriendly manner” at him. This did nothing to overcome his fear of goats, but being the gentleman, he was he never held a grudge against his old and dear friend Jimmy FromBarrett.a

very early age Roger had a love of everything steam. For many years was the Section Leader of the Wood Sawing and Working Area at his father’s Steam Rally, or rather the “Non-Working Area” as it became known by the lads, namely Campbell Parry, Richard and Gordon Luther, James Eckley and Dean Acton; all who spent many happy steam rallies with their great friend and leader “Lank” (as they knew him) in the proverbial “Non-Working Area”

During his younger years DA bought Roger and his brother Allen a fishing rod each, and they proceeded to the river near the garage to try their hand at this newly discovered past-time. Surprisingly, both caught an eel. They did not know what to do, so dragged these eels across the field, still attached to the new fishing rods their father had bought for them; arriving at Shavers farm, where their mother, Mrs Davies, gladly took the eels from the boys and enjoyed them for supper! On returning to the river, Roger decided fishing was not for them and threw both his and Allen’s’ new fishing rods into the river where they probably remain today!

He never finished his own stuff because he was always “too busy” helping other people with their projects, running his own business, being a brother, father, husband and a true great friend to many.

Parents evenings were not a source of great joy for his mother, Dorothy, who had to sit through teachers’ appraisals of Rogers’ academic term. Sadly for his mother, Roger did not fare any better in the PE department with comments including “poor all round attitude” …. “He has made the bare minimum effort” and even “no effort at all”. He did however achieve a level of consistency! His final report from the Head of House, summing the job up, and written in red stated… “Roger has gone from bad to worse, and is now impossible. What he hopes to achieve by this, I cannot imagine. I am sick of the sound of his name”. He proved them all wrong.

R.I.P. Roger (Lank).

Roger’s father ‘DA’ did not make many appearances at school, preferring to allow Dorothy to deal with it. However, one morning he found Roger hiding behind the hedge, and avoiding the school bus. DA saw red and he made Roger get into his van. On arriving at school, he drove round and round the island in front of the main block with his hand firmly on the horn until there were pupils and teachers at many of the windows. He then dragged Roger out of the van and handed him in to the Headmaster. Suffice to say he didn`t hide from the school bus again.

Roger’s teenage years were spent discovering how to fix and repair mechanical things. One afternoon he managed to get an old Datsun pick-up that was lying around at his father’s garage started, and with his brothers on board proceeded to take it for a test drive through the village. On reaching the outskirts of Dymock, they turned the old Datsun around and hooked on to ‘Bill the Books’ Fruit & Veg trailer and started the return journey scattering Fruit & Veg as they went! Once again DA was informed and yet another bollocking was issued.

Roger’s talent for fixing and repairing mechanical things continued to go from strength to strength, as did his sense of mischief and fun! One day he loaded a couple of friends, his two brothers and even his sister Sally (who was determined not to miss out) into an old Ford Anglia which he had managed to get going. He proceeded to take them on an “off road experience” around the field opposite his father’s garage. Pretty soon, it became apparent the field was not big enough to allow them to continue. Not wishing to be beaten, he

carried on to the next field that belonged the Old Village Colonel who was jumping up and down in anger. Roger proceeded to demonstrate a ‘hand brake turn’, covering the poor old Colonel in mud! Needless to say, DA was once again informed and Roger, along with all his associates, took refuge in the vaults underneath this very church. DA knew where they would be hiding and as one by one, they emerged, each received several lashes of an old fan belt DA had taken from his collection. There were a couple of exceptions, Sally was first out and was spared the fan belt because DA had a soft spot for his only daughter, and she pretended to cry as her father had instructed her! Tom was next out, and as usual was left unscathed, and also spared the fan belt as he insisted “Roger had made him get in the car”. Roger, as usual, was firmly in the frame; took all the blame and was treated to the fan belt, and yet another bollocking.
