More Migrants in State Parliament Needed A Baillieu Government minister says we need more migrants in state Parliament to better refletct Victoria’s cultural diversity.
Greek-born Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Minister Nick Kotsiras said recently that more than a quarter of Victorians were foreign-born, but only 14% of MP’s were. “One could say we are not representative of the community as a whole”, he said.
“Yes, I would love to see more foreign-born MP’s. “I’d prefer to see more interest in our political system because then our democracy is stronger”. Parliament’s 17 migrant MP’s include Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell (England), Consumer Affairs Minister Michael O’Brien (Ireland), Labor planning spokesman Brian Tee (South Africa) and Greens Leader Greg Barber (New Zealand).

Mr Kotsiras said he didn’t believe in quotas to boost Parliament’s diversity, but was concerned that many migrants didn’t understand the political system. “If we educate people about our civics, about our laws, how the Parliament works, perhaps some of them will have an interest in running for Parliament”, he said. Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria chairman Joe Caputo backed the push.
“If you have a Parliament which is not reflective of the local community, people will feel excluded from the political process and therefore you will create an “us and them” perception”, he said. But Mr Caputo also rejected quotas, saying: “You don’t want people accused of getting there just because they are of a certain gender or a certain ethnicity”.
Mr Cotsiras said newly arrived migrants and refugees needed more information about their rights and responsibilities to help them integrate into the community. “It’s about making people feel a sense of belonging, feel part of the community and, dare I say, feel part of Team Victoria and Team Australia”, he said.
The Government has been working on a new multicultural policy based on citizenship.

LIBERALS are calling for a shake up of Tony Abbott’s frontbench saying a shock result in the latest opinion polls is a “wake up call” for the Coalition. Opposition MPs said the latest Newspoll showing Labor and the Coalition deadlocked on 50 per cent and Julia Gillard with a 14-point lead over Mr Abbott as preferred PM was a sign a
fresh team was needed to give Mr Abbott more support so he could switch from being negative to selling a positive vision. Just five months ago the Coalition enjoyed an 18-point lead over Labor after preferences, but now they were tied. ”There’s a lot of passengers in quite a lot of senior positions,” said one MP backing a reshuffle. ” Other polls also show Labor gaining ground, but still have the Coalition with an election-winning
lead. The government said its rise was because an Opposition scare about the impact of the carbon tax on jobs and prices had not come true. Foreign Minister Bob Carr said part of the reason was huge cuts by Liberal premiers. He said voters feared if mild-mannered state Liberals were making painful cuts “wait until angry Abbott has his chance”

CSIRO study projects climate change effects across Australia CLIMATE change will alter the Australian landscape so dramatically and so quickly that our grandchildren could live in a very different country, according to a landmark CSIRO study. The study’s lead researchers fear Australians may not be ready to accept the new way their country may soon smell, sound and look. The Commonwealth’s science and research body has produced the first “Australia-wide assessment of the magnitude of the ecological impact that climate change could have on biodiversity” and how the changes could be managed. It says totally new environments will emerge while others vanish and there will be a decline in forest environments, which will give way to shrubs and grasslands. “Climate change is likely to start to transform some of Australia’s natural landscapes by 2030,” said lead researcher Dr Michael Dunlop, from the CSIRO’s Ecosystem Sciences division. The study identified a range of management options, including ensuring there is plenty of habitat of different types available for plants and animals.” But one of the biggest challenges could be the community accepting the levels of ecological change that we could experience,” Dr Dunlop said. Wary of past criticism, the CSIRO says it is confident in the accuracy of the complex computer models it used.

Greece prepares to lease 40 uninhabited islands Greece’s Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund has identified 40 uninhabited islands and islets that could be leased for as long as 50 years to reduce debt as pressure grows on the country to revive an assetsales plan key to receiving international aid. “We identified locations that have good terrain, are close to the mainland and have a well-developed infrastructure and, at the same time, pose no threat to national security,” Andreas Taprantzis, the fund’s executive director for real estate, said in an interview in Athens. “Current legislation doesn’t allow us to sell them outright and we don’t want to.” The fund is charged with raising 50 billion euros from state assets by 2020 to meet conditions tied to pledges of 240 billion euros in foreign aid. As international inspectors in Athens scrutinize the country’s fitness to receive the latest aid payment, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has said commercial exploitation of some islands could generate the revenue lenders need to see to continue funding the country. The shortlist includes islands ranging in size from 500,000 square meters (5.4 million square feet) to 3 million square meters, and which can be developed into high-end integrated tourist resorts under leases lasting 30 years to 50 years, Taprantzis said.

In effort to conclude an agreement between the government and the troika on about 11.5 billion euros of spending cuts is likely to lead to the retirement age in Greece rising from 65 to 67. Sources said that the coalition is poised to concede to the change as part of the austerity package demanded by the troika. Greece overhauled its pension system in 2010 but a new retirement age rise would lead to savings of 1 billion euros per year. The government believes this measure is a less
damaging step than seeking the savings elsewhere. Nevertheless, the government still faces some tough choices to settle on the 11.5 billion euros of cuts with the lenders.

Unemployment in Greece is going from bad to worse, as official figures released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) showed a 44 percent increase in the number of jobless in this year’s second quarter compared to the same period in 2011. The April-June rate stood at 23.6 percent, against 22.6 percent in the year’s first quarter and 16.3 percent in the second quarter of 2011. What is even more worrying is the increase in the rate of the long-term unemployed (those who have been out of work for over a year) among the total jobless, which has jumped to 59 percent. The proportion of the so-called new unemployed -- i.e. those entering the job market in search of their first position -- is 23.3 percent of the total. Almost one in every three foreigners in Greece are without a job (32.5 percent), while for Greeks the rate stands at 22.7 percent. Just over 71 percent of foreigners are economically active, which is far above the 51.7 percent rate for Greek people. Notably, the portion of salary workers in Greece (63.2 percent) remains far below the European Union average (80 percent).

Greek-born designer in race for top British award
Migrant centers proposed for Greek islands Authorities have decided to set up four new reception centers for immigrants on islands of the Aegean to tackle a rising influx of would-be migrants into Greece by sea that has been prompted by more effective policing along the Turkish land border. The decision to set up the centers on Chios, Lesvos, Samos and Rhodes -- was taken during a
meeting between Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, Defense Minister Panos Panayiotopoulos, Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias and Merchant Marine Minister Costas Mousouroulis. The aim is to prevent the incoming migrants from traveling to the mainland until they are deported. Government officials also reportedly decided to intensify inspections by coast guard vessels and members of the European
Union border monitoring agency, Frontex, along the sea borders. Dendias also presented to Samaras a plan code-named Ioni aimed at dealing with an anticipated influx of refugees from Syria. According to sources, the plan outlines three scenarios, foreseeing the refugees’ arrival in Greece, Cyprus and Turkey. In either of the latter two cases, Greek authorities would help the neighboring countries. In the event that the migrants arrive in Greece,
the plan is to temporarily detain them on Crete. Turkey is believed to be accommodating 83,000 Syrian refugees though authorities have indicated they cannot host more than 130,000. Reports suggest that around 250,000 Syrians have fled their homeland. Migrants are also continuing their efforts to leave Greece. Coast guard officers in the western port of Patra have detained around 10 suspected people smugglers in the past two weeks.
Mary Katrantzou’s signature prints have reached new levels of recognition. The Greek-born, London-based fashion designer is one of three nominees in the Designer of the Year category at this year’s British Fashion awards. The young designer is in top fashion company, with her fellow nominees being established designer Stella McCartney, who, besides working on her namesake brand, was the creative force behind the British team’s kit at the recent London Olympic Games, as well as critically acclaimed Christopher Kane, whose innovative take landed him the designing post at Versace’s secondary line, Versus. Featuring catwalk collections for spring-summer 2013, London Fashion Week got under way last Friday, with Katrantzou presenting her collection last Sunday.. The awards, meanwhile, will be announced on November 27. Born in Athens in 1983, Katrantzou studied architecture at Rhode Island School of Design before focusing on fashion and textile design at London’s Central Saint Martins, where she earned both a BA and an MA. She subsequently worked for fellow London-based, Greek-born designer Sophia Kokosalaki and American createur Bill Blass, among others, before moving on to developing her own brand. In 2010 Katrantzou earned the Swiss Textiles Award, a distinction accompanied by a 100,000euro cash prize aimed at enabling rising fashion talent to get established in business. The designer has also collaborated on a series of joint projects with British retailer Topshop, French accessories brand Longchamp and Vodafone UK, among others.

One of the most important Fine Food Festivals worldwide. This year over 1000 exhibitors participated with great products from Australia, Greece, Cyprus and the rest of the world. Great wines, olive oils, olives, dairy products, Biscuits, ouzo, tsipouro, aromatic herbs, cheeses and many more were exhibited. The exhibition was mainly aimed at businessmen and merchants, but attracted great interest by the general public, as well. The organisers and the exhibitors expressed their great satisfaction for the success of this year’s promotion of Greek and Cyprian fine foods. This Festival alternates every year between Sydney and Melbourne. Therefore, next year, Sydney will host event. Mrs Panagiota Tsagaridou, Inspector of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Cyprus was in charge of the Cyprian Delegation. Mr. Alkiviadis Kalambokis, of the Greek Organization of Foreign Commerce represented Greece. Two receptions were held to welcome the delegates to Melbourne. The first one at the offices of the Consulate General of Greece hosted by the Consul General Mrs Eleni Lianidou, in conjunction with the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria and H.A.C.C.I. (Hellenic Chamber of Commerce and Industry). The second, was held on the same evening, initiated and hosted by Mr. and Mrs Angelodimou at Silk’s Restaurant, Crown Casino.

Ingredients - 100g diced blue eye - 125g picked crabmeat - 2 tbsp aioli - 1 small leek, diced and sautéed - 1 lemon, zest and juice - 2 tsp chilli paste - ¼ cup fresh parsley, finely chopped - ¼ cup fresh coriander or dill, finely chopped - 1 tsp baharat spice - Breadcrumbs to thicken - 100ml olive oil AIOLI - 2 egg yolks (or 80g yolks) - 3 garlic cloves - 15ml lemon juice - 1 cup olive oil - 15ml white wine vinegar - Salt & pepper to taste Method: • In a non-reactive bowl, mix all ingredients (except olive oil) together; thicken to correct consistency with breadcrumbs. Basically until mixture stops sticking to your hands. Season with salt and pepper. • Place in refrigerator for 5 mins to firm up. • Shape crab mixture into small balls and slightly flatten them into discs, approx 5cm in diameter. • Pour some olive oil in a shallow fry pan and heat to medium. Once a smoky haze begins, add your crab fritters a small batch at a time. Cook for approx 1½ min each side.

With the Minor Premiership already wrapped up by Dandenong Thunder weeks ago and the topfive confirmed last week, the final day of 2012 was never going to eclipse the craziness that Round 22 brought in 2011. But with 2nd5th place and a second-chance in the finals up for grabs, there was certainly some exciting encounters.
Box Hill claim historic treble Box Hill United have won a thrilling Women’s Premier League Grand Final 4-3 on penalties after extra time could not separate them from firsttime finalists Bundoora United. In turn claiming the first ever Victorian women’s treble having won the WPL Grand Final, WPL Regular Season and Pelada Cup.In a match that had everything, Box Hill opened the scoring through an unfortunate Sarah Richardson own goal before finding themselves a player down after Grace Vincent received a straight red card. Torcaso. “When we got one back, I knew we could get one again and we got two in the end which was fantastic. “I can’t fault the girls at all, some of them are going to just grow from this experience and it’s great.” Box Hill assistant coach Paul Kilpatirck agreed that it was an unfortunate way to end what was an incredible match. “It’s a shame that penalties had to decide it, both teams gave everything,” he said. “I’ve said it all year that this is a special squad, the girls back one another up and they never give in. “There’s always belief, the girls were superb.”

With Oakleigh Cannons and Bentleigh Greens in second and third placed respectively going into their final game, a win for either side would secure second place while a loss or draw for Bentleigh could see them finish in fourth. And that’s exactly what happened. Oakleigh came from 1-0 down to topple the Greens 3-1, and with Green Gully’s victory Bentleigh were knocked from third place and lost their second-chance in the finals. Two goals by former Melbourne Victory defender Rodrigo Vargas helped Green Gully to a 3-0 win over Northcote City. Oakleigh’s win over Bentleigh meant Green Gully were able to leap into third and a secure a second-chance in the finals. Northcote were surprisingly uninspiring considering it could have been they who finished in third place and received the second-chance.
