Fireworks to fill city skyline on NYE
Fireworks will erupt on the stroke of midnight and cover the city sky this New Year’s Eve, with the City of Melbourne’s new look celebrations providing a stunning show from anywhere with a view of the skyline.
Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the $2.84m 10-minute midnight fireworks display would be the broadest ever, with more firing sites used than ever before. “In 2012 we will deliver a grand fireworks show that stretches further across the city than any other year with 22 firing sites, including 18 rooftops,” the Lord Mayor said. He added that spreading the viewing sites throughout the city would ensure a spectacular but safe New Year’s Eve. “We are taking a new approach to New Year’s Eve this year. We have created a fireworks
display that can be viewed from our official live sites, any vantage point with a view of the city skyline, or via a live TV broadcast. “The centre of the city has become extremely congested in recent years with more than 550,000 people coming in to celebrate. Public safety is our number one concern so by spreading New Year’s Eve celebrations across the city people will be able to comfortably see in 2013. And while people will be in different locations across the city, they will be sharing the same, uniquely Melbourne experience.” Chair of the Marketing Melbourne portfolio Councillor Beverley Pinder-Mortimer said face painting, dress-ups and a gift exchange where people can share their New Year’s resolutions would build up to a
magnificent midnight finale. “Some of Melbourne’s favourite DJs will provide music on the night and impressive multimedia and visual effects will entertain the crowds in anticipation of the midnight fireworks. A uniquely Melbourne countdown will precede the brilliant fireworks display that will be synchronised to a Melbourne soundtrack composed especially for the event,” Cr Pinder-Mortimer said. “We encourage people to enjoy the city in their own way this New Year’s Eve by having dinner at one of our great restaurants or enjoying a picnic in a park with family and friends before heading to a midnight live site for the final countdown.”
Official Midnight Live Site (from 9pm) Early Eve at Yarra Park (6pm - 10pm) Promoted viewing Train Station - Openlocations all night
The City of Melbourne will run three official live sites at Docklands, Flagstaff Gardens and Treasury Gardens for the midnight fireworks.
Firing sites Train Station - City Loop closing at 11.45pm Please note Jolimont Station will close at 2am
by WESTERNPORT: CORINELLA: Staff member Scott Harper headed out early one morning before work in search of Western Ports finest. While a jewie failed to show up, Scott did manage a nice gummy shark as a consolation prize. The fish was caught during the run out tide and took a calamari ring fished on the bottom. QUAIL BANK: The fishing along the Quail Bank has been quite productive over the past few days. Although there has been a little weed about, the fishing for calamari has been considerably good. Bait fishing during the run out tide has been effective with silver whiting working well. Anglers casting artificial jigs about have seen most of the action while drifting over the weed beds. Size 3.0 jigs with a red foil belly have been the colour of choice. MIDDLE SPIT: The middle spit is certainly the go if you want whiting at the moment. An unknown angler sent us his report to the fishing report hotline after having success last Friday morning. Fishing the run out tide in 2 meters of water, he managed a healthy bag of fish with this cracker in the mix. Apparently the customer was using whiting snatcher rigs laced with mussel baits. TORTOISE HEAD BANK: The Tortoise Head Bank has been fishing very well for whiting over the past few weeks. Many of the local charter fleet have been working the area with good success. Most of the fish have been caught using mussel baits but pipi and whiting worm have also been good. A paternoster rig with circle hooks has been the downfall to many whiting as they have been quite aggressive in their bite. Berley is a must. FLINDERS: Regular customers Darren Moore and Joel Ryan headed out last Saturday morning and set anchor not far from Flinders in the Western Entrance. The boys were using fresh yakka baits when they managed this nice 9 kilo gummy shark.
PORT PHILLIP BAY:
PORTSEA: Some very impressive calamari still getting about down the bottom end of the Bay this week. Angler’s Graham and Bill drifted around out wide of the Pier in 10 meters of water to manage their bag of calamari. While most of the calamari were a fair size, they managed three horses around the 2 kilo mark. Size 3.5 heavy jigs did the damage. MORNINGTON: Red rocks at Mornington has always been known for its calamari but this week it seems there has been a school of whiting move into the area. Anglers fishing in 2 meters of water right under the cliffs have been catching some fair models to 38cm. Whiting worm has been a deadly bait. CHELSEA: You know just how good the snapper season is when anglers begin to hit them with the smallest tackle they possibly can. This week an angler sent us a text report after catching some solid reds off Chelsea in 14 meters of water. Fishing with paddle tail soft plastics and a 1000 series reel on a whiting rod he managed some cracking fish. BLACK ROCK: There is no shortage of salmon again this week. The Black Rock area is teaming with busting schools of salmon with plenty of anglers getting in on the action. Tossing small 18g Arma metal lures and soft plastics has been very effective. It is recommended that you change the treble hook to a single though to prevent losing any fish as well as a cleaner hook set. To find the fish, look to the sky and watch for the birds. Where you see the birds diving into the water, you’ll find the salmon schools.

Congratulations to the Alphington Class of 2012
After a year of hard work and commitment, the class of 2012 have discovered that they have been richly rewarded for their efforts. The class of 2012 has continued the upward trend in the VCE performance of Alphington Grammar School students. It was very pleasing to see our students achieve a median Study Score of 30 for the year. 10% of our Study Scores this year have been in the range of 40+ (placing these students in the top 8-9% of all students in the relevant subject in the State). We achieved 8 results of 45 or above (which places these students in the top 2% of all students in the State). This year Study Scores of 40+ have been achieved in a range of subjects including: Further
Maths; Legal Studies; Health & Human Development; English; Literature; Accounting; Greek; Economics; IT Applications; Biology; Psychology; Physics; and Chemistry. Nearly 6% of our students have achieved an ATAR of 95 or above (ie top 5% of all students in the State). Approximately 12% of our Year 12s achieved an ATAR of 90 or above (ie top 10% of the State). Approximately 30% of our students achieved an ATAR of 80 or above and nearly half ended up scoring an ATAR of 70 or above. Our average ATAR was well above the average ATAR of the State. The dux for this year was Jordan Ignatiadis who scored an ATAR in the high 90s and ended up in the top 2.5% of all students in the State (97.70). George Karambelas
and Emmanuel Heretakis ended up in the top 5% of all students in the State. Other top performers were Nicky Serafim, James Radford and Stephen Tsaketas (all of whom ended up being ranked in the top 10% of the State). These students will be acknowledged as our ‘scholars’ for 2012 at the Scholar’s Assembly in early 2013. These results are particularly impressive in light of the fact that our students are not stopped from doing certain subjects as is the practice at other schools. This year we had several students complete Maths Methods, Chinese, Specialist Maths, Greek and Chemistry and the average scaled score in each of these subjects was well above the median point for the State (ie 30). This statistic is not acknowledged in the release of raw data presented to the Media.
The performance of our Year 11 students has again been most positive. Nearly 30% of our Year 11s achieved a Study Score in excess of 40+. Acting Principal of Alphington Grammar School, Mr Mark Stanton said: “These results are particularly gratifying and reflect the hard work and dedication of the students and their teachers over many years of schooling. The results achieved this year set a new benchmark which we will encourage each successive year level to aspire to better. I congratulate the class of 2012 for taking on board the message I gave them in 2010 – ie ‘Reach for the stars. If you fall short you may still end up out of this world.’” School Council Chairman, Nick Koukouvitakis, said:
“I’m delighted with these tremendous results. Our VCE students through their hard work, sacrifice and endeavours have made us all very proud. We again thank them enormously and wish them well into the next phase of their adult and professional development. A big thank you to the parents who placed their trust and support in AGS. This has not gone unnoticed. Finally these results in some part were made possible firstly with the professionalism and commitment displayed by former Principal – Mr Mike Smith, the Director of Teaching & Learning – Mr Mark Stanton, the senior management team of the school, the teachers and other staff of the school, and through the huge investment in recent years by the GOCMV.”
Bill Papastergiadis, President of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, which set up the school in 1989, said: “The Greek Community of Melbourne is delighted with the 2012 VCE results for Alphington Grammar School. The results are amongst the best ever for Alphington Grammar School. The significant multimillion dollar infrastructure investment in the school by the Greek Community of Melbourne, coupled with the continued investment in teacher professional development and the school’s ongoing commitment to teaching and learning outcomes, has been met by a high level of performance by the VCE students.”
Woman battles telco over $148,000 global roaming fee…
Public transport fares to rise in 2013
A WOMAN slapped with a monster mobile phone bill of almost $148,000 after a European holiday has battled with her telco to wipe the bill. The customer’s carrier reduced the $147,908 global roaming fee to $1147 after her nine-week trip - but only after a complaint to the industry watchdog and despite requesting a special plan to make calls while abroad before she left.
PUBLIC transport fares will rise by 7 per cent on New Year’s Day in the latest blow to commuters. The price hike will mean a daily Zone 1 myki fare will increase by 46c to $7.02, costing a commuter up to $168 extra a year.
The sky-high charge, revealed in a summary of the Telecommunication Industry Ombudsman’s latest complaints, is among $8 million worth of disputed global roaming charges from July last year to September 30. A TIO quarterly report, released today, also reveals customers claim billing blunders are destroying their businesses and credit ratings. One self-employed truck driver said he was forced to close his business after a rejected loan for vehicle repairs because of an incorrect $102 phone debt listed on his credit rating. Ombudsman Simon Cohen said the potential for disputes over roaming charges had increased as more Australians travelled overseas with devices to stay in touch with family, friends and business contacts. The Australian Communications and Media Authority is developing an industry standard to combat bill shock for international travellers. The TIO’s recommendations are that companies get proper consent before activating global roaming; supply clear cost details and be allowed to restrict access to roaming when charges are rapidly building.
A two-hour ticket will jump from $3.28 to $3.51. A daily Zone 1 and 2 myki ticket will increase by 78c to $11.86, which could set commuters back an additional $285 a year. The State Government declined to comment on the increase in train, tram and bus fares last night.
Sources said the Government planned to formally announce the fare increases in coming days. Last year, fares increased by 8.6 per cent. The two fares increases were initially flagged in the former Brumby government’s Victoria Transport Plan, in order to help pay for projects. Opposition public transport spokeswoman Fiona Richardson said: “On the eve of Christmas the Liberals’ fare slug is a real slap in the face for commuters whose services are getting worse.”
That blueprint has largely been axed. Public Transport Users Association spokesman Tim Petersen said it expected a rush of people to join its commuter club in coming days to try to snag cheap fares. “It is a fare rise that is above the rate of inflation,” Mr Petersen said. “Last year there was even more of a rush because of the extra large increase. This year we expect the same to happen again.”

HACCI AGM
The Hellenic Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Victoria) Inc. (“HACCI”) held its annual general meeting (“AGM”) at the Hellenic Museum in Melbourne on Wednesday 12 December 2012.
Government planning council of ‘wise men’ to tackle tax evasion
The AGM capped off a busy year for HACCI. HACCI President, Mr Nicholas Mylonas, said as part of his President’s Report that: “I want to acknowledge the contributions of the 11 Board members and 37 Committee members of HACCI who delivered such quality events in 2012 including the HACCI Excellence Awards and Gala Ball held at Mural Hall, the Fine Food Exhibition, the Peter Economides Tour which hosted two sold-out events in both Melbourne and Sydney, the Thessaloniki Trade Mission to Melbourne attended by some 16 companies from Greece, the HACCI Business Forums in conjunction with the Bank of Cyprus Australia (now Delphi Bank), the HACCI Golf Classic, the International Women’s Day and the Apokries Event in conjunction with the Italian Australian Chamber of Commerce as well as the monthly Press Club Business Luncheon events”. Mr. Mylonas added “The Committees continue to deliver on such important initiatives as the HACCI Internship Program, which even in its early stages has succeeded in placing 8 young Greek Australians into internships with host employers, our HACCI Editorial Committee, which produced the quarterly HACCI Herald publications (now in its 7th edition) and the monthly Hermes eNews (up to its 15th edition), HACCI’s trade initiatives, which in addition to the trade initiatives outlined earlier also included the Chairman’s function for the visiting Olympiacos football team held at Etihad Stadium and the function held for the visiting Greek National basketball team in Geelong”. The AGM heard that that HACCI could not have achieved its success in 2012 without the support of its major partner, Delphi Bank (formerly the Bank of Cyprus Australia) and the support of its other partners such as The Hellenic Museum, The Greek Media Group (including Ta Nea & 3XY Radio), Neos Kosmos, OPA! Magazine and The Press Club group. A vote of sincere thanks was also put forward by the meeting, which was voted unanimously by the members present. The activities and achievements of HACCI gave rise to a number of supportive comments from the members in attendance. Mr John Velos, a former President of HACCI and honourary life member, commented that “seeing what HACCI has become today is a dream come true”. Another HACCI member, Mr George Kapnias added that “HACCI has a great deal to offer Members and that supporting HACCI ensures the great work can be continued well into the future”. Notwithstanding these positive sentiments, Mr. Mylonas stressed that the ultimate success of HACCI needs to be reflected in a larger membership base. Mr. Mylonas told the meeting that increasing HACCI’s membership is a priority for 2013 in light of the offerings that HACCI has developed and delivered over the last 2 to 3 years.
The government is planning the creation of a “committee of wise men” to crack down on widespread tax evasion, which continues to thwart Greece’s efforts to emerge from its debt crisis. The former head of National Bank, Vassilis Rapanos, is slated to head the new body. According to sources, Rapanos, who nearly assumed the post of Finance Minister in June before health problems prompted him to bow out, has been offered the post but has yet to give his response.
The aim of the committee would be to overhaul the country’s tax administration to more efficiently target tax evasion. Both Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras stressed the importance of curbing tax evasion on the sidelines of a European Union leaders’ summit in Brussels at the end of last week where a decision was made to approve the release of some 50 billion euros in rescue loans to Greece. At the same time, ministry officials in Athens submitted to Parliament the first of two tax
bills aimed at boosting muchneeded revenue. The second bill, to be unveiled early next year, is expected to bring a more radical overhaul of the tax system as well as substituting suspended sentences for large-scale tax evaders with immediate jail terms. Addressing a health sector conference on Saturday, Stournaras described this second bill as “the heavy tax law,” adding that despite the progress made by authorities so far “the road ahead remains long and steep.”
Representatives of Greece’s troika of foreign creditors – the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund – are reportedly aware that there is little scope for further tax hikes on austerity-weary Greeks and have emphasized the importance of the authorities finally launching an effective crackdown on tax evasion. According to sources, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told Stournaras in Brussels “do something about tax administration reform and tax evasion.”
One million court cases postponed
HACCI Chairman, Mr. Kostas Stefanidis, advised the meeting that after 10 years as a board member of HACCI, having seen the completion of the merger of HACCI and the Hellenic Business Forum and to being part of HACCI’s renaissance, it was an opportune time for him to retire in order to make way for new candidates. Mr. Mylonas acknowledged Mr. Stefanidis for his invaluable contribution over his 10 years of service, the last year being as Chairman. Mr. Stefanidis will now be honoured as a HACCI Life Member in recognition for his service. The meeting concluded with HACCI Secretary, Mr Alex Ninis, expressing gratitude on behalf of the Board and Committees to President, Nicholas Mylonas for his leadership and guidance over the last year and for imbuing the HACCI family with an esprit de corps and a “can do” attitude which has resulted in HACCI’s stellar achievements over the last year and for many years to come. For further information on the activities of HACCI, or to become a member of HACCI, please visit HACCI’s website at www.hacci. com.auor call HACCI on 9602 2977. For further information regarding this press release, please contact HACCI’s Office Manager, Marianna Sarris on Tel: (03) 9602 2977 or Email: info@hacci.com.au.

Go-slow action by judges and prosecutors since September has resulted in more than one million cases being postponed, adding to a massive backlog that has built up in the country’s courts over the years. Hundreds of thousands of civil and criminal cases have reportedly been frozen and thousands more are expected to be put off after judges and prosecutors decided to extend their rolling walkouts until January 19, escalating
their protest at fresh cuts to their salaries imposed by the government as part of new austerity measures demanded by the country’s foreign creditors. The protracted action is believed to have deprived the cash-strapped state of millions of euros in much-needed revenue as countless cases regarding tax arrears as well as offenses where convictions are translated into financial penalties have been postponed.
All the country’s courts have joined the walkouts apart from the Supreme Court and the Council of State, the country’s highest administrative court, which is pursuing legal action on behalf of its judges. Last Sunday, judges and prosecutors voted to extend their work-to-rule protest until January 19 despite the government’s offer of concessions that would have softened the blow of the reductions. Supreme Court
president Rena Asimakopoulou and Supreme Court prosecutor Yiannis Tentes had addressed their colleagues before the vote in a bid to change their mind to no avail. Tentes had asked his colleagues to “lower their gaze to society and heed the demand of citizens for judicial functionaries to contribute to curbing tax evasion and widespread lawlessness.”

Pleasure trips will be most enjoyable and should lead to new and lasting friendships. Involvement in groups of interest will bring you in touch with important individuals. Find a quiet spot where you can work diligently and stay out of the way. Investments may not be as lucrative as you thought.
You may want to get involved in financial investments presented to you. Don’t forget to let your mate know how much you care. Get involved in creative projects that could turn into moneymaking ventures. Don’t let your emotions take over.
You will find that superiors may not see situations as you do. You are best not to discuss your personal life with others. You will drive your emotional partner crazy this week. You should visit a friend or relative who hasn’t been well.
Entertainment should include your whole family. Don’t start any arguments unless you’re prepared to accept irrevocable results. You may end up being blamed if anything goes wrong. Attempt to face key issues with lovers or problems could escalate.
It’s time you let your true feelings out. Consider the source before you believe what you hear. You can pick up valuable information if you listen to those with more experience. Expect to experience a sudden reversal of fortune.
It’s time to make professional changes. You can raise your standard of living if you pick up some freelance work on the side. You’re in a high cycle for romance. Your involvement in interest groups may bring you popularity.

Get busy on those home improvement projects that you’ve been procrastinating about. Your determination may make you a little overbearing when dealing with others. You can expect insincere gestures of friendliness this week. Valuable information can be yours if you listen to those with experience.
You may find that female colleagues will be more help than you anticipated. Take care of the needs of elders in your family. Make any decisions you have to in order to avoid feeling unsettled. Don’t let others saddle you with guilt that isn’t warranted.
Make sure all of your travel and driver’s documents are in proper order. You will not be able to contain your emotions this week. Your ability to take hold of a situation will surely bring you popularity and leadership. Your words will be taken out of context if you’re evasive with coworkers or employers.
If they’re really interested, they’ll wait. Deception is probable if you don’t use discrimination. Concentrate on work and on making money. Don’t think the worst if you hear something negative about your partner.
23 Jun - 23 Jul
You may be able to impart knowledge that’s innovative to those searching for a new angle. You need a change and you need to earn more cash. If you address those in a position to grant you favors you should get the support you require. New love connections can be made through group associations.
This is a good day to check out your investments. Romantic relationships could be under pressure. Set the ball in motion and be relentless until you complete the project. Don’t get intimately involved with a coworker.

WISDOM OF THE ANICIENTS The nature of sound was one area of physics in which the ancient Greeks made significant progress in understanding. Around 400 B.C. Archytas of Tarentum stated that sound was produced by bodies striking together, with swift motion producing high pitch and slow motion low pitch. Later, Aristotle included air as a body that produces sound when struck, stating that sound was propagated by one part of the air striking the next until it reached the ear, and also correctly noted that, without a medium such as air or water, man could not hear sound.

Melbourne still has premier derby in Veria thrashes Panathinaikos A-League, says FFA boss David Gallop as Olympiakos marches on...
Round 11 results Perth Glory Newcatle Jets 2-0 Central Coast Mariners Melbourne Heart 2-0 Melbourne Victory Brisbane Roar 1-1 Adelaide United Wellington Phoenix 3-1 Sydney FC Western Sydney 0-2
LADDER
Veria produced one of the season’s biggest upsets by putting three goals past Panathinaikos, while champion Olympiakos returned to victories after coming from behind at Panionios.
AUSTRALIAN soccer chief David Gallop said two thriving Melbourne clubs was critical to the A-League’s future. Last Saturday’s second Sydney derby attracted 26,176 at Allianz Stadium, but Gallop said the Melbourne version remained the competition’s blockbuster. “Having two teams in Melbourne is absolutely critical,” Gallop said.”The Sydney derby is building in profile all the time, but certainly the Melbourne one currently holds the pace as the blockbuster. “Derbies are important, when I was in League we had a view when the A-League kicked off that second teams in Sydney and Melbourne was going to be the smart move for football to make.” Sunday’s match is set to sell out and Heart chief executive Scott Munn revealed that ticket sales were ahead of last year’s epic pre-Christmas clash. A sellout would mean a crowd of around 27,000 at AAMI Park. While Victory has become the A-League benchmark in terms of crowds and corporate support, Heart has struggled to attract crowds since entering the A-League in 2010.” “Fans of football and sport generally in Melbourne should get out and support their city by getting on board with Victory or the Heart,” Gallop said.”The derby games are a special part of the season. It’s inescapable that the Victory are a powerhouse team in our competition, but they had a five-year head-start on the Heart and that’s a significant issue.”But when I say Victory has had a five-year head-start, they have done a terrific job and set the benchmark in many areas in our competition.

Panathinaikos was coming off a solid display against Olympiakos in the 2-2 draw at the derby a week earlier, but on this time the Greens produced their worst display of the season. Veria, promoted only last summer to the Super League, pulled the Greens apart leading 3-0 after 55 minutes thanks to a brace by Ilias Ioannou and a Kenan Bargan goal and eased to the end of the game, for one of the Macedonian team’s most famous wins in its history. The result has brought Panathinaikos back to the wrong end of the table. At Nea Smyrni Panionios led through Christos Aravidis but Olympiakos equalized courtesy of a Panayiotis Spyropoulos own goal five minutes later and snatched victory with former Panionios striker Rafik Djebbour eight minutes from time.

The Qatari said in an emailed statement that he had stepped down from the positions 10 days after the ethics committee of football’s world governing body FIFA, launched a new probe into corruption claims against him. FIFA responded to bin Hammam’s statement by saying
it had received his resignation letter but stressed its ethics committee remained competent to make and maintain a judgment “even if a person resigns”.The 63-year-old has been accused of trying to buy the result of a vote to the world governing body’s top job in 2011 and was banned by FIFA from all footballing activities. This ban was subsequently overturned by the Lausannebased Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in July due to
what it called a lack of evidence over the corruption allegations. Bin Hammam, who is still provisionally suspended from football, said he was fed up with what he said were “trumped up allegations”. According to insiders, interim president Zhang Jilong of China is favourite to claim the post full-time and last month said he had “promised a new vision for AFC” in a “new era of transparency” after nine years of bin Hammam being at the helm.
