Business as usual for many during holidays ‘TIS the season to be on holidays - working. Nearly half of professionals say they will squeeze in up to three hours’ work a day over the festive season, according to a survey by a business that provides office space. To the chagrin of family and friends, one in 10 will work even longer during their summer break. And small business operators were more likely to be fielding calls, writing emails and tending to business than those working for large companies, the survey found. But psychologists warn that people doing this risk burnout and upsetting and disappointing their family and friends.
Psychology Melbourne’s senior psychologist Warrick Arblaster said while it was a necessity for some people to keep tabs on work during their time off, others needed to ask themselves why they couldn’t disengage. “The lack of a break can appear to a spouse or child as a lack of interest,” he said. “There is a social and a cultural expectation that people do let go and wind down at Christmas and New Year’s. “People need to ask themselves why (are they working)? “Is it an expectation from the boss, a self-expectation, or an inability to be able to let go of work?” Almost 40 per cent of respondents said they would still be operating on a “slightly reduced” business as usual level.
by WESTERNPORT: CORINELLA: The fishing has slowed a little this week in the Corinella region but for those sticking it out have still managed some nice fish. Customer Peter Johnstone did very well last Monday managing 4 snapper to 5.3 kilos. Peter said he found the fish near Snapper Rock and used pilchards for bait. All fish were caught during the run in tide. RHYLL – THE CORALS: The Rhyll-Corals area is still producing some nice fish. While there are a lot of smaller fish in the area, those sticking it out have got onto some larger models. Squid and pilchards have been the most productive baits. The fish have been biting well throughout both tides but seem to be more active two hours either side of the tide changes. STONY POINT: Customers Teahn Murrel and Chris Aart fished near Buoy 17 during the low tide last Saturday. Using pilchards and pipi for bait, they managed some nice silver trevally to a kilo, 7 pinkie snapper to 44cm and a big barracouta. NORTH ARM: Robin Gray from Peninsula and Western Port charters reports that the fishing is still fantastic despite the weather this week. Robin has been fishing the North Arm with good success. This week they have managed some lovely snapper to 5 kilos, rock flathead to 54cm, whiting and garfish. Pilchards have been working well for the reds and mussel for the whiting. JOES ISLAND: Customer Paul Jones and his mate Chris headed out and set anchor off Joes Island last Sunday evening. Fishing the run out tide, the boys managed a cracking snapper which measured 82cm.
PORT PHILLIP BAY:
PORTSEA: Some big calamari are still in the Portsea area at present. Those looking for them should concentrate in 10 meters of water out from the pier. At this depth, there is a significant stretch of thick seaweed where they have schooled up. Some of the models have been over 2 kilos in weight. Anglers using size 3.5 jigs have been catching them during the run out tide. FRANKSTON: The boys at Billfisher in Frankston have been way too busy to go fishing! The shop is now well on its way to being fully restocked. There’s Stella’s, Tiagra’s and everything else you could ever want in reels, full selections of line, braid, terminal tackle, lures and bait. And if they haven’t got it, they can get it in a day! CARRUM: Wayne Sharrock from Sharkmen fishing Charters has continued on well this week putting his clients onto some great snapper fishing. Working wide of Carrum, Sharky has managed some nice fish with pilchards the top bait. The best bite times have been early morning and late afternoon. Matt Cini from Reel Time Fishing Charters has had much the same success. Last Monday saw Matt fish out from Carrum and he had no trouble in finding some nice fish for his clients. The boys managed their bag with ease working the 18 meters line. HALF MOON BAY: With the unsettled weather over the past few days the fishing in close has been quite productive. As the sun went down one evening, Customer Anthony Torpy headed out to fish off Half Moon Bay. Using calamari rings and garfish heads Anthony managed some very nice snapper. BLACK ROCK: The salmon are back and in big numbers around the Black Rock to Sandringham area. The fish have ranged in size with the larger models going around the 1.5 kilo mark. The most effective technique has been to troll small hard body lures and metal slugs around the schools. If the fish are up high and busting the surface, casting small flick bait soft plastics has been effective. Remember, at this time of year it is highly possible anglers will be dusted by something big that’s hanging around the salmon. These are usually kingfish so make sure your tackle is up to spec if you want to land one.

New President for Australian Greek Welfare Society (AGWS). occupied the position of Treasurer and more recently Vice President. The Xylouris Ensemble - Live at Fed Square. Friday Dec 14 An evening invoking the Anzac legend in Greece Celebrity Cretan lute play, Yiorgos Xylouris and his world-‐famous Ensemble will perform at the BMW Edge, Fed Square on 14 December in a special concert to raise funds for an ANZAC memorial in Crete. The concert is an ini3a3ve of the PanCretan Associa3on of Melbourne and promises to be an enthraliing night of music, commemora3on and celebra3on of the etnernal 3es forged between Greece and Australia in war. Guest of honour at the concert will be Mr Leslie Manning aged 99. who served on Crete with the 2/7th BaUalion AIF during WWII. The concert is a fundraiser for a memorial to be erected in western Crete. The ‘42nd Street’ memorial is the brainchild of Glenda Humes -‐ the eldest daughter of Victorian Aboriginal ANZAC Reg Saunders MBE who fought in the BaLle of Crete with the Australian 2/7th BaLalion, and was hidden from the Nazis by villagers aRer Crete’s occupaTon. 42nd Street was the Diggers’ name for a road near Chania, Crete during WWII. The site was where an important baLle took place between German and Anzac troops on 27 May 1941. Saunders took part in the baLle along with other mainly Victorian soldiers and NZ Maori units. What became known as ‘the charge at 42nd Street’ saw the Anzacss push the Nazis into retreat; one of the few occasions during the BaLle of Crete where the occupiers were forced backwards -‐ buying Tme for other BriTsh Commonwealth troops to evacuate from Crete’s south coast. The site has been totally unmarked for over 70 years. Cretan authoriTes have given their backing to the project though because of the Greek economic crisis, are unlikely to offer funding. The bronze memorial plaque will be produced in Australia. Organisers have targeted the raising of $28,000 to cover the esTmated producTon, shipping and groundwork costs. John Rerakis, Vice President of the PanCretan AssociaTon of Melbourne said that the AssociaTon is delighted to offer its support to the project. “We’re very grateful to Yiorgos and his world-‐famous Ensemble for suppor3ng this ini3a3ve. It promises to be a very special night,” said Mr Rerakis. “We’re also grateful to the family of Reg Saunders, and Reg’s eldest daughter Glenda for ge[ng the 42nd Street memorial project up and running.

GREEK NEWS
Athens may ask for additional buyback offers
Greece may ask additional offers from bondholders in a debt buyback plan that forms part of its international bailout, said Greek officials. Another government official and a banker confirmed the move was under consideration.Athens plans to buy back bonds with a face value of about 30 billion euros at deeply discounted prices to lower its debt load.
A deadline for bondholders to submit offers expired last Friday. A Greek government official said on Saturday that Athens had received offers of about that sum. The officials’ comments confirm a report earlier by television station Mega, which said that Athens was very close to hitting the 30-billion euro mark and that it might renew the invitation
for a short period to collect additional bids from Greek banks on standby to provide them. Greek banks, which hold about 17 billion euros of bonds, said they would participate in the deal but did not reveal how many of their bonds they were willing to exchange. Their boards authorized management on Friday to offer up to 100 percent of lenders’
University faculties to be slashed
bondholdings. The buyback accounts for about half of a 40-billion euro EU/IMF debt relief package for Athens agreed in November. Its success will ensure that the IMF, which contributes about a third of Greece’s bailout loans, will stay on board of the rescue. Greece and its international lenders have shied from setting a binding target for the plan, apart
Arvanitopoulos said that from September, the number of faculties would be reduced from about 500 to some 350. However, he insisted that this would not lead to fewer students being accepted. Just over 80,000 were admitted following exams this summer.
“The mergers and closing down of departments will be carried out using scientific, operational and growth criteria,” he said, adding that there would no longer be faculties that would lead students “straight to unemployment.”
Greek bankers had been reluctant to take part in the scheme, for fear of foregoing future profits on their Greek bonds. However, they have to
make sure it succeeds because they depend on the bailout funds that Athens stands to receive if the buyback succeeds and its bailout to continue smoothly. Almost 24 billion euros from the 34.4 billion euros Greece stands to receive from its lenders later this month will be used to refloat Greek banks, whose capital has been largely depleted by the country’s debt crisis.
Demand for natural gas has more than doubled in Athens
Many consumers across Greece have turned to alternative forms of heating due to the soaring price of oil this winter.
There will be no delay in the government’s plans to reduce the number of university departments from the next academic year even though some academics have asked for a 12-month extension, Education Minister Constantinos Arvanitopoulos told Greek newspaper Kathimerini.
from saying that Athens should spend at most 10 billion euros on it. Officials told Reuters the aim was to purchase about 30 billion euros of debt, thus reducing Greece’s debt load by a net 20 billion euros.
With demand for heating oil set to drop by 50 to 60 percent from last year’s levels, the natural gas company has benefited considerably as demand has more than doubled in the capital. Data from the Attica Gas Corporation (EPA Attikis) show that the number of new contracts in the last few months has increased by 45 percent compared to last year, while the number of inquiries made about connection
to the natural gas network in the September-November period soared by 106 percent from the same period last year. The number of households in Attica to have signed contracts with the company has risen 31 percent. EPA Attikis also suggests that following the leveling of the special consumption tax on diesel and heating oil, households using natural gas instead of heating oil have saved an average of 38.2 percent in the OctoberNovember period. A similar picture has emerged in other regions served by
the natural gas network – Thessaly, central Greece, and Thessaloniki. The market is also reporting a significant increase in demand for wood and pellets, but their price has also climbed in recent weeks. Still, with heating oil prices ranging between 1.30 and 1.40 euros per liter and with the heating oil subsidy that the government pays being unable to raise demand, it is believed that alternative forms of heating will be used even more extensively this winter.

HACCI Hosts Dinner for Ambassador Bloomfield
Top row left to right: Mr. George Panayiotou, Victoria State Office, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; George Iliopoulos, HACCI Director of Trade; Steve Sakkas, HACCI Trade Committee; Bottom row left to right: Arthur Baoustanos, HACCI Trade Committee; Nicholas Mylonas, HACCI President; H.E. Ambassador Jenny Bloomfield; Fotini Kypraios, HACCI Director of Internship Program and HACCI representative Victoria Business Advisory Council.
The Hellenic Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HACCI) hosted a dinner in honour of the visit of the Australian Ambassador to Greece, H.E. Jenny Bloomfield. The dinner was held at at Maha Bar & Grill on Monday 10 December 2012. The Australian Ambassador to Greece was in Melbourne
for mid-term consultations and HACCI welcomed the opportunity to meet with her to discuss developments in Greece and Australia-Greece relations. Ms. Bloomfield updated HACCI on the progress of the Greek Australian Business Council based in Athens of which she is Honourary President and was instrumental in its establishment last August.
Ms Bloomfield stated that the HABC has begun to undertake some activity and is confident that with time it will become an invaluable conduit and source of information connecting Greek and Australian businesses and that it will contribute decisively to the broader development of economic and trade relations between Greece and Australia.
HACCI Hosts Dinner for Ambassador Bloomfield In turn, HACCI gave the Ambassador an overview of the recent success of the Trade Delegation that visited Australia from Thessaloniki at the end of November including the overwhelming positive feedback received from the 16 participating companies who had over 100 B2B meetings organised by HACCI in
Melbourne, and who see solid business leads and prospects in Australia based on the connections made here. Ms. Bloomfield emphasised the importance of HACCI’s efforts to strengthen and further develop the bilateral trade relationship between Australia and Greece while preserving and building
on the foundations of new connections and associations. The Ambassador reiterated her comittment to supporting HACCI’s efforts to establish stronger bilateral relations between the two countries and expressed her wish to assist by supporting further projects in this regard in the future.
Greek specialty foods hot Coalition comes together on tax bill amid opposition strife commodity for economy
Some in Greece believe entrepreneurs can help save the Greek economy in ways bailouts and austerity programs cannot by selling to the world what only Greece can offer — the Aegean diet. Focusing on specialties that have been part of the Greek culture for millenniums, including olive oil, citrus products and mastica, an evergreen resin used to make strong drink and other products. Inspired by the global success of Greek yogurt brands such as Fage, Athenians are leaving urban life, where opportunities are getting scarce, and moving to rural towns and island villages to start an agrarian lifestyle as
farmers, factory workers and food entrepreneurs. Some believe Greeks haven’t aggressively pursued an unmet global demand for their food and drink. Derided by northern Europeans for an alleged lack of ambition and work ethic, Greek Mediterranean culture is prized in the minds of many as simple, healthy and pleasant. Food and agriculture are two of five Greek industries consulting firm McKinsey & Co. highlights as having greatest potential for future growth. The firm predicts food manufacturing and agriculture in Greece could go from $27
billion in revenue and 710,000 jobs in 2010 to $42 billion and 970,000 jobs by 2020. That has potential to make a big impact in a small country of 11 million people, more than 25% of them unemployed (a rate that is double among the younger labor force age group of 15 to 24-year-olds). McKinsey says world markets are primed for the foods of Greece, so it may just be a case of improving capacity as well as better marketing and distribution to grow an economy that has been in recession for years and hampered by growing public sector employment over private.
The government made the final changes to a tax code that is expected to be voted on in Parliament by Thursday as part of Greece’s commitments to its foreign creditors with the lingering differences between coalition partners apparently bridged. Meanwhile developments were less harmononious within Independent Greeks, a right-wing opposition party that is opposed to the terms of the country’s bailout, with several key lawmakers opposing an increasingly intransigent stance taken by leader Panos Kammenos.
The draft tax bill, which increases the burden for middle incomes and selfemployed professionals while offering some relief for large families, was given some finishing touches yesterday ahead of its anticipated submission in Parliament. A copy of the draft was sent to the troika over the weekend and has reportedly received the creditors’ stamp of approval though some reservations were expressed on minor details, sources said.
The minor changes introduced by government officials relate to the levy paid by self-employed professionals, which is to increase to 650 euros from 500 euros. That increase will apply from the current financial year and not from next year as had been anticipated. Meanwhile, those who work for one employer but are not on the payroll will pay the standard 500-euro levy for this financial year but will be relieved of the levy from 2013 onward.

Make residential changes that will lift your spirits. You need a change and you need to earn more cash. You could lose money or precious belongings if you aren’t careful. Make decisions about your professional objectives.
Don’t involve yourself in the emotional problems of those you work with. Look out for yourself this week. Get busy on projects that improve your own image; you’ll have the discipline to succeed. You may have been too nice to a friend who just wanted to take advantage of you.
Those you care about may oppose your ideas. Remain calm and you’ll shine. Passion should be your goal. Try not to lend or borrow money this week. Family outings should include visiting friends or relatives.
Don’t be too open or put your faith in unreliable coworkers. Limitations with females could lead to unfortunate circumstances. You can expect the fur to fly on the home front. Your interests could lead you down avenues you never realized existed.

KOUZINA Galahtoboureko
(custard pie with syrup) - 5 eggs - 1 cup caster sugar - 2 cups semolina - 1 teaspoon vanilla - 3 litres warm full-fat milk - 200 grams packet filo pastry - 1/3 cup melted unsalted butter - 1 ½ cups caster sugar - lemon peel
Method • Preheat oven to 200°C. • Beat the eggs and 1 cup of sugar until light and creamy. Add the semolina and vanilla and mix well. Pour the mixture into a large saucepan and slowly pour in the warm milk, stirring continuously over a low heat. Keep mixing until mixture is a smooth thick custard. Remove from heat. • In a large baking dish, place half the filo sheets, brushing with the melted butter as you go. Pour in the custard and spread evenly. Continue with the remaining filo sheets. Brush the top layer with melted butter and sprinkle with a little water. • Bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool. • To prepare the syrup, bring 2 cups of water, 1 ½ cups of sugar and a little lemon peel to boil and simmer for about 10 minutes. Carefully pour this over the galahtoboureko. When all the syrup has been absorbed and the galahtoboureko has cooled down, cut into pieces.
PARDON ME, YOUR GREEK ROOTS ARE SHOWING! The nature of sound was one area of physics in which the ancient Greeks made significant progress in understanding. Around 400 B.C. Archytas of Tarentum stated that sound was produced by bodies striking together, with swift motion producing high pitch and slow motion low pitch. Later, Aristotle included air as a body that produces sound when struck, stating that sound was propagated by one part of the air striking the next until it reached the ear, and also correctly noted that, without a medium such as air or water, man could not hear sound.

Manchester United to play A-League All Stars in Sydney
Postecoglou takes the blame
Round 10 results Adeleaide United Melbourne Victory 4-2 Melbourne Heart Perth Glory 1-0 Newcastle Jets Central Coast Mariners 0-2
Football Federation Australia (FFA) in conjunction with the NSW Government and Destination NSW confirmed that English Premier League (EPL) giants Manchester United will play the A-League All Stars at ANZ Stadium in Sydney next July.
Wellington Phoenix Sydeny FC 1-2 Western Sydney Wanderers Brisbane Roaw 1-0
LADDER
The international exhibition match on Saturday 20 July will be exclusive to Sydney in the only appearance by Manchester United in Australia during the club’s 2013 pre-season tour. Manchester United is set to bring out its full squad in preparation for the 2013-14 EPL season. United’s current squad includes England striker Wayne Rooney, Dutch ace Robin van Persie and the evergreen Ryan Giggs.
Melbourne Victory coach Ange Postecoglou accepted responsibility for his side’s 4-2 loss to fierce rivals Adelaide United last Friday.
It will be United’s first visit to Australia since the two-match tour in 1999. The A-League All Stars will represent the best of the Hyundai A-League with the team to be preselected by fans. FFA CEO David Gallop has hailed the confirmation of the high-profile match as another great opportunity to showcase Australian football.
Victory fell behind to an early goal just two minutes in before striker Andrew Nabbout scored his fourth goal of the campaign to equalise. However, sloppy defending and lapses in concentration saw Adelaide race to a 4-1 lead with three goals inside 11 minutes, all in the first half.
“Having Manchester United as the opponent for our first ever A-League All Star game will put the Hyundai A-League on the world stage,” said Gallop. Destination NSW CEO, Sandra Chipchase, said: “Destination NSW is proud to have secured another major events coup for NSW. The Manchester United game will generate more than 20,000 overnight international and interstate visitors to Sydney, contributing an estimated $16 million to the NSW economy.”
Marcos Rojas got a goal back directly after half-time but it was only a consolation, as United avenged their 2-1 loss when the two sides met in October. Having seen his team concede four goals in 32 minutes, Postecoglou took the blame for
the defensive leaks. “I probably got team selection wrong. It wasn’t my greatest coaching night so I deserve what I get. My performance was pretty ordinary,” Postecoglou said. Last Friday’s loss marked the first time in six games the Victory have tasted defeat after claiming 13 points from a possible 15. Postecoglou did not feel the heavy loss to Adelaide was a reality check for his team, who had climbed to third on the table. “Does that have any far reaching implications?

Time will tell, but I’m still fairly positive about where we are heading,” Postecoglou said. “We will get Milligan, (Archie) Thompson and Traore back next week which is fairly significant.”

The Greek girls defeated Hungary 9-5 in the final and showed they are a cut above the rest in the world.
The players of coach Giorgos Morfesis, who has doubled his world championship triumphs after leading the women’s team to glory 16 months ago in China, finished the tournament unbeaten. This is the same team that last year had won the European championship, too, in Madrid. “We came to win the cup and we did it,” said player Margarita Plevritou a few hours after the final.
Upon their arrival to Athens the young Greek internationals made it clear that their aim is to win the Olympic gold, that has eluded Greece given the women’s team elimination from the London Olympics earlier this year. The dark side of the story is the internationals’ complaint that they feel abandoned by the state and that their main sponsors are their own parents.
