For me, success is freedom! Freedom to create only when you want to create without limiting yourself to a framework and other people’s opinions. Freedom to be who you want to be!

What unexpected situations made you who you are today?

I was lucky to meet various extraordinary people in my life, who inspired me to continue the path of self-discovery. My curiosity made me constantly explore new things. But it also made me face reality quite early. I’ve experienced the death of one of my closest friends at the time and a person who was a huge inspiration for me. I was there, and it hurt me very much, although I did not admit it either to others or to myself. I was in denial and met with the embittered and dark side of myself. But after going through this I also got to know the best part of myself that is still here. Me, who lives in every moment and appreciates every event or person on the way. Me, who sees the light through any darkness.

What were you doing when you lost track of time?

I quite often lose track of time , especially when something fascinates me. First of all when I have a camera in my hands! Or when I’m working on photo editing, changing textures and shapes, trying on different shades. But in general it can be anything from a good movie to a sea wave crashing against rocks.

If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?

I would like to do more charity work if I had the opportunity. One of my plans for the future is to open a gallery/art space something close to my aesthetics and free for self-expression. I think this would be my main investment.

If you could start over, what would you do differently?

I believe that every experience in life is unique and important to our growth. Every step I take and every stone I stumble on, brings me closer to my true self.

What does success mean to you?

I think this is something I’m still trying to figure out. Right now I’m just trying to learn a much as I can and continue growing.

What unexpected situations made you who you are today?

I meet a lot of people that give me insight and inspire me.

What were you doing when you lost track of time?

Probably looking at some isopods.

If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?

Cabin in the woods with a big garden, surrounded by mushrooms and moss.

If you could start over, what would you do differently?

Probably nothing. I’m content with it all.

Right now? To me, success feels like having courage - to not believe in failure in its traditional meaning, to grow, and to pursue my core values. Failure should never be taught as the antonym (or lack) of success, rather, as a symbiotic part of it. As long as I treat every moment that feels both shitty and awesome, as me gaining EXP points for my next level up, that’s pretty much success in my books. Success is also being inspired by the things I don’t know and the things I can’t do yet - it’s about being excited to grow, do the hard things, and be vulnerable to my temporary shortcomings. I used to always tell myself and my friends to “do shit that makes you proud of who you are”...i think just doing that is also success - and knowing when/how to forgive yourself when you don’t. Sometimes I really screw up and do something I feel really (really) bad about because it breaks this value i’ve identified so strongly with...but learning to forgive myself for the sake of learning and improving really puts into perspective the fact that this is only one moment in life that will be deeply internalised and gained growth from. All of this is so insanely hard, but also ridiculously rewarding to be in a mental state that acknowledges strengths, weaknesses, and efforts to bridge the gap between.

What unexpected situations made you who you are today?

Haha where to start? I should probably preempt that, I think as much as we like to try to control our present and future, there are many nuances to life we can never predict. Having an asian female (or maybe even generally female) upbringing that stressed the importance of being perfect doesn’t leave room for unpredicted events either. Most of the world grows up feeling embarrassed by failure - we think those who fail are unworthy of success or resources. This cultural mentality is what gave me the pressure to really project an image that rejects failure, and is what made it terribly difficult to be vulnerable and grow. THAT was the expectation I set for my life ahead of me - one in which I must effortlessly achieve every ambitious objective chosen to pursue. Growing up the youngest in my family line meant that I was expected to achieve all that my elder siblings and cousins had - and more. In grade 8 the big story going around my family was that my cousin 4 years my senior - a national debater for Team Canada, Provincial Officer at an international business competition, and head of his school’s frisbee team - received an offer of admission to the coveted Harvard. The expectations laid out for me was clear...not enjoying debate, pursuing tech, and even having a boyfriend in high school was not that. My life became so diversified with experiences - and so unfocused, that

JASMINE TONG

What does success mean to you?

33

JASMINE TONG

by grade 11 - not having ticked all the boxes I thought I should have by then - I sincerely believed my life was hopeless with future prospects dwindling. Every experience that wasn’t what I was taught to be success felt like a distraction from the big fat elephant in the room that screamed I was a failure. Yet it was those experiences that developed my core values today. Pursuing clubs/experiences because of the brand rather than passion taught me to spend time pursuing what I truly love and can focus on… getting massive imposter syndrome from the pressure to be a super tech-intelligent, high performing youth that I chose to be fully educated in fundamental sciences rather than what I thought were my strengths. Even being with first love, who loved me so easily, so deeply, and with so much confidence that I started to learn it was possible to love myself. All these experiences were so far from what I thought the last 4, most conscious years of my life would be...but every bit of pain I felt from not doing everything I thought I should have - feeling like I’ve failed the people around me or myself - is what makes me feel so strong in who I am today, and who I can be following.

34

What were you doing when you lost track of time?

Honestly? Just chilling, haha! I really want to first acknowledge the struggles and fear many people feel from Covid and quarantine. Me and my generation are super lucky to be in a position where our livelihoods and direct line of financial freedoms are not at stake. It’s an opportunity to bring our lives into focus that does not go unappreciated for every single soul that continues to help this world continue to function as normally as it can. I can barely remember what I was doing during quarantine since it’s just been absurdly busy with school/work once Phase 2 hit but I think that at first, I definitely felt this pressure to be ticking off goals that have been kicked off to the side due to being “too busy”...but I think that over time I just gave up on doing things that I didn’t necessarily feel internally motivated to do - so I really just ended up bumming around (blissfully) for a couple of months and really spending that time resetting - trying to focus on me and what I wanted for myself.

If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?

Leverage it into more money, attain power (political and monetary) to amass resources and intellect to work on the most pressing problems in the world. I’m a huge believer in good research. I think the benefits of thinking with a scientific model surpasses just the individual level. Science isn’t just knowing certain facts

- it’s the theorizing, experimentation, and iteration of educated assumptions; an entire mental model that’s based upon growth and the pursuit of truth. Science is also an equalizer for any cultural, racial, or sexual bias - it’s a universal language that can be understood, appreciated, and respected by all. I think that’s insanely cool. I’d want to give resources to good research that would benefit the health and longevity of our world and ourselves.

If you could start over, what would you do differently?

Ahhh haha I hate this question because it makes me look back on things that are now beyond my power to change...Imagining if I had the wisdom I do now, there would be soooo many things...I would have focused on my growth more, rather than defined successes. Have the courage to rise up to challenges that made me feel weak or scared. Not dumbing myself down for others (and owning up to everything I am). Being present with the people around me. Lead with curiosity instead of judgement....but ultimately...I think everything i’ve done, from the most proud to shameful moments - everything that’s happened, all the pain and joy, is part of our coming of age journey...so as tough as it feels to say right now...I don’t think I should do anything differently. I’m happy to be experiencing the struggles and successes that I feel currently, and know that it’s all part of your life’s process. But...IF I could start over...haha...i’d love it if I treated the people around me better, including myself, so that I could have enjoyed the life’s process a little more.

I always try not to measure success in numbers, which is kind of hard because you are surrounded by them. Even though it needs a very optimistic mindset, i keep saying to myself, as long as there’s little progress you will move forward. Because even someone who is without doubt extremely successful, will sometimes think: have I done enough? Thats also why i started to count the time I spend doing something productive, because its a better representation of what I’ve done in a day than my own memory.

What unexpected situations made you who you are today?

I do not plan a lot so I think there should have been a lot of unexpected situations in my life. It’s probably the things that happened without my noticing, that changed the most.

What were you doing when you lost track of time?

Actually this happened to me yesterday and the day before and probably also tomorrow, but I’ve realized that the best thing i can do with my time is to spend it, working on art. So when I’m feeling like I’ve lost track of time and was doing nothing at all that day, which makes me feel really bad, I try to force myself into doing something productive. Because after all this is what makes me happy.

If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?

I would definitely donate some of it and save the rest. Which would allow me to continue working on my passions without the fear of not making any money of it. But i feel like winning the lottery would actually destroy the journey of your career by giving you this much financial stability and taking away all the risks, which is why i do not play at all.

If you could start over, what would you do differently?

I actually wouldn’t change a lot, because i like the journey I’m in right now. I would only want to have started working on my passions earlier, even though i feel like i needed the time to realize what i actually want to do. And i still need the time. But I guess i have got plenty of time left so I didn’t waste much by only playing video games when I was a child. It’s not the past I would want to start all over again, I think right now is the time that i would want to revisit when I’m older. Even though it is hard to realize.

I used to know what success meant, but now I know that I didn’t actually know. Maybe that’s the only right direction to go though; understanding that the first step is dealing with your own ignorance. For now I just try to understand how tiny I am to the world and how giant the world is to me. And everyone has their own tiny, giant world. I’m trying not fall into a mental spiral on one end or another, while at the same time trying not getting stuck in a specific mental place.

What unexpected situations made you who you are today?

learn things about the world, you judge yourself from a year ago, try to change. Every year I realize how different my perceptions of things are, cause things are always changing and they’re never the way I expected them to be.

What were you doing when you lost track of time?

Trying to find time.

If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?

I’d give resources to other artists as much as I could. I’d like to be able to participate in the mutual aid system more. In many ways I already won the lottery by being born into the life I was, and I do hope to become successful so I can give my creative friends the resources they need to make the work they want.

If you could start over, what would you do differently?

Probably nothing, I grew up very carefully preparing for a career as an artist, traditionally self training and such, and when it came to the chaos after I graduated highschool I still had a background of very meticulously established skills. All that was left was learning from the world and developing a set of beliefs. My reasons for making art were broken down and built back up, and I imagine that will happen several times over the course of my life.

Creating a brand that can truly be an extension of who I am symbolically and conceptually. I want the brand to get to the point that my design language is crystal clear that people can pinpoint my garments as mine even if they know the brand well or not.

What unexpected situations made you who you are today?

Meeting a random kid in my apartment complex and bonding with him over the summer when I was 12 and applying to volunteer for a friend’s event when I was 18.

What were you doing when you lost track of time?

Thinking of new garments that I want to make after I’m done making the one I was presently making.

If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?

I would first buy a building or buildings that houses everything and everyone that I work with. The rest would just go towards good causes, programs, and jobs. Also start a museum or gallery of things I find interesting in general.

If you could start over, what would you do differently?

To focus more on execution rather than imagining. Also not to think that people who are more “knowledgeable” than you in the field you’re interested in are people to look up to or always listen to.

There is no one ultimate definition of success for me. For every circumstance and stage of life the meaning is reinvented. Lately, I believe that tangible success is to transcend creative self-doubt and constant uncertainty about your next work into redirecting it to the process of making. To be able to use this energy to fuel the creation.

What unexpected situations made you who you are today?

Since childhood, I was fortunate to travel and observe various patterns and textures that were different from those in my everyday life. Those experiences were not glamorous or touristic, sometimes they were quite the opposite. It created these internal layers in me, that I believe I still reach out to when I come up with an idea. I dig inside and extract these fruits of the early memories in life.

What were you doing when you lost track of time?

To me creative process is a type of meditation, which sometimes would mean that time is not an applicable dimension. There are two great moments when I lose track of time. First one is when you start building up on your initial thoughts and testing ideas in the beginning of the project. Not early on, when you are completely lost, but when it has some life to it already. Second, towards the end of the project when you are completing the piece. It especially happens when you work long hours and spend so much time around the piece, that it is hard to distinguish not only time, but where “I” ends, and “It” starts.

If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?

I am not sold on the idea of one big monetary gift one day. I do believe in process, and if one’s goal is to be financially wealthy; it will come gradually. Answering this question, if I won the lottery, I would make sure that my basic needs are satisfied and the majority of my time is dedicated to the process of making, whether it is artistic or more basic that fits everyday life. I would shift my focus to projects that benefit society in various disciplines.

If you could start over, what would you do differently?

I would prefer to be more certain about my decisions and creative path. To not question myself of actions but rather go toward new adventures. I would allocate more time to focus on my research. Not on what was asked from me, but what my internal voice would tell me. I would prefer to spend less time listening, trying to fit into any of the limiting boundaries, but rather try to define myself and discover my voice.
