Letter From LTGWhat’s good, Sharks?
I hope you’ve been enjoying your summer so far! I mean, what’s not to love? There’s no school, sunny skies, and that’s right- plenty of service opportunities! Hopefully you’re all still hard at work to achieve the best summer of service you’ve ever experienced. Remember that while summer is a great time to go on vacation, service is never ending! Remember that you should still be keeping in touch with your clubs and officer boards. Begin planning your awe-inspiring entrance back into the school year as well as summer service projects to engage Key Clubbers who are still in the area. If you also feel like the upcoming school year will be particularly difficult and busy for you, get a head start on what you can right now! Try submitting your Monthly Newsletter or your Articles to the District- it’s definitely easier than it seems. It’s also a great time to get to know the other officers around the Division! Hopefully I’ll see you all at the next DCM- for those who have never gone, what better time is there than the summer to come out and meet your fin-tastic fellow Sharks! Even better, go introduce yourself to your sponsoring Kiwanis- I’ll be visiting them in the summertime as well, so if you are ever interested, you don’t have to go alone. Keep up the great work, everyone! Yours in service, Christina Lee

Summer of Service What I love most about summer? You mean, besides the fact that school is out for another two months and I’m safe from any homework?
That’s almost too easy. Key Club, of course! One of the most memorable Key Club events I’ve ever went to was actually during the summer. Last July, Cinco Ranch Key Club, James Taylor Key Club, and Mayde Creek Key Club all got together at Ritter’s Frozen Custard for an interclub social- and it definitely brought us a lot closer. I mean, throwing water balloons at each other in the ridiculous heat would only be able to bring strangers in service closer. When we talk about service in the summer, we’re not talking about grand projects that you feel like are way too difficult for you to accomplish. Summer is a great time just to call up a few Key Clubbers together and have a social, or spray some cars or sell some sweet lemonade and fundraise!

And as always, don’t hesitate to invite me over!
June DCM Recap
Recently (June 25th, to be exact) we our second DCM together and covered many different topics! For those who weren’t there, we talked about the two triathlons that would help the Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, which if you’re interested in, you can talk to your President about, DCON ads, the RTC theme and forums, and upcoming Kiwanis meetings. Fingers crossed, I will be able to attend both the Cypress Triathlon as well as the Towne Lake Triathlon, but both are perfect opportunities to volunteer and raise money for our sponsoring Kiwanis club. Even better, they have also invited you guys to come and attend either their August 9th or August 16th meeting- so if you’re interested, please email me and let me know which date works best with you! The Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club is an amazing, dedicated, and caring group of servant leaders, and it is definitely worth meeting them. I’ll see you guys soon at the next DCM!

Let’s Get Technical… Are you interested in joining the District Staff? Do you think you have what it takes to serve the District on a higher level? Are you artsy fartsy and know your way with technology? If you answered yes to all these questions, you should definitely apply to be the mighty Texas-Oklahoma District’s next District Tech Producer! As Tech Producer, you will help the Board by providing online media that will aid in the branding and publicizing of Key Club everywhere. Remember, the deadline for both the Candidacy Forms and the Tech Producer Application is Sunday, July 10th, 2016! Best of luck to all applicants!

Message from the Governor
Hey Y’all! My name is Dianna Cardenas and I am honored to serve as the new Governor for the amazing Texas-Oklahoma District whose motto is “Whatever it takes!” I am aware of the hard work and dedication this position entails and I am more than willing to go above and beyond. I want to be able to prove to you that I am worthy of your trust and be an amazing servant leader with you all! My three main goals for this year, are to grow our membership by reactivating suspended clubs, do my best to visit every region, and build unity between the k-family by encouraging inter-clubs. All of this is possible if each one of us (320 clubs, and about 19,300 members) puts our piece of the puzzle. My Governors Project this year, will focus on helping the American Cancer society. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US, and affects many of us either directly or indirectly. With knowing many people who have been affected by cancer in many ways including myself, I have chosen this as my Governor’s Project. Words will never be able to explain how much I owe to the Kiwanis Organization and Key Club. Being a part of these two amazing organizations has helped me become the person I am today. From being on board as the Lieutenant Governor for Division 5 my freshmensophomore year, I knew being a part of Key Club was set in my path. I cannot wait to see all the experiences this year has in store for us! I am currently a junior at the Judson Early College Academy and originally from Los Angeles, California. When I’m not volunteering, I spend my time playing soccer, dancing, or at my parish. I would like to thank everyone for supporting me and once again would like to say how honored I am to be serving you as your 2016-2017 Texas-Oklahoma District Governor! Yours in Service, Dianna Cardenas

The eLEMONate Challenge When the world gives you lemons, film yourself eating one to help eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus! Wait, that doesn’t sound exactly right, does it? Actually, it is! Recently, the Eliminate Project- one of Key Club International’s most defining service projectssucceeded eliminating Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus in Niger. Though the Eliminate Project has raised over $110 million dollars with the cooperation of UNICEF and Kiwanis International, it still takes the lives of 49,000 babies and mothers each year. Our work is still not done! Last year, members in the Pacific Northwest District- inspired by the famous ALS Ice Bucket Challenge- filmed themselves eating fresh lemons to not only publicize the Eliminate Project, but also to start a chain reaction that reached even some Key Clubbers here in the Texas-Oklahoma District. It’s up to you to continue the challenge!
