www.christlutheraneagan.org Christ Lutheran Church is a congregation of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod

Christ Lutheran Church is a growing body of believers in Jesus Christ, sharing the love, word, and grace of God with our family, community, and world.

The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: "Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will let you hear my words." So I went down to the potter's house, and there he was working at his wheel. And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter's hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do. Then the word of the LORD came to me: “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter has done?” declares the LORD. “Behold, like the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.” Many of us and many people we know need a new beginning. God is the God of second chances, and God is the God of new beginnings. Have you ever wished you could go back and start over? Maybe because of an unpleasant situation of your own making. If only you could take the words back that you said, if only you could make different choices. Sadly, in most cases, it is impossible to go back and change what has been said or done. God specializes in New Beginnings! God used a unique manner to teach Jeremiah a valuable lesson. Jeremiah is a true prophet with the people’s best interests at heart. At this time he is very discouraged and about to give up on God’s people. He seemed to think God had done all He could and now there was no hope. God told him to go down to the potter for an object lesson. There he saw a potter at the wheel intently shaping a vessel. The potter’s foot was on the treadle moving the wheel around and around as the potter shaped the vessel. But just as the vessel seemed to be taking shape and becoming lovely, something unexpected happened: the vessel was marred. We are not sure just why, but it was marred. Jeremiah probably thought the potter would reject the crumpled clay as if the material was now of no value. Instead he flattened it again, put it back on the wheel, and caused it to take shape once more. He might have cast it aside with the waste. In utter disgust he might have abandoned it completely. But he did not and was only satisfied when he had put his best into it and brought out of the clay its highest possibilities. It is this shaping and bringing out your highest possibilities that the Divine Potter wants to do for you. He has a plan and purpose for each one of us. His plan is personal and His plan is definite. He alone knows our possibilities and He desires the best for each of us. If you are disappointed, if you are discouraged because your life has been marred, then know that God has a message of hope and assurance for you. God is working on us – we are His workmanship. He wants to shape us according to His divine design and plan. God here says to His people, "As the clay is in the potter’s hand so are you in my hand." When our plans, hopes, dreams or life doesn’t turnout like we desire, when we realize we are flawed, God can remake us! When we fall apart at the seams God can put us back together again! God won’t give up on you. God won’t toss you out on the scrap heap. God won’t dismiss you as a lost cause and discard you as hopeless. God takes the clay we yield to Him and starts all over again rebuilding life after life, time after time. God is willing to start over again shaping you into another vessel as it seems best to Him. The only prerequisite is that you give Him your clay, that you give Him your life. (continued on the next page)

(From the Pastor, continued) You need to realize or remember that God created you for His own purposes. Our usefulness comes from being in His hands. The Master Potter knows how to create what He designed you for, what He purposes, what He desires, what He is crafting you for. He knows what needs to happen to turn you into a vessel of His glory used to bring Him glory. Before our clay is in the hands of the Master it is simply a lump, not good for much of anything. But once God has worked it and shaped it, it becomes His masterpiece!

Part Time Sunday School Help Needed We need 5 exuberant individuals who would be willing to help plan and participate in the leadership for a 5 weeks Inter-generational Sunday School experience beginning in September. The lessons involve Powerpoint, skits, crafts, music, etc. See Pastor Hahn for more details Anyuak Sunday School Help Needed We are in need of a few volunteers, who love working with children, to help with the Sunday afternoon Anyuak group. This past year we structured a modified Sunday School with lessons and activities for the children. There are currently around 17 Anyuak children between the ages of 3 and 18 who have been attending on a regular basis. They meet every Sunday except for the last Sunday of the Month. That is the week that the Anyuak group travels from church to church joining other Anyuak brothers and sisters from across the state of Minnesota. We are hoping to begin this Anyuak Sunday School on September 10th. Stewardship Emphasis Help Needed There is a need for 3-4 individuals who would like to help plan and promote "The Gift That Keeps on Giving" (this year's stewardship emphasis). Since there is no one currently on the Board of Stewardship we need volunteers to step up and serve this short term event. See Pastor Hahn for more details Volunteer Youth Group Leaders Needed There is a need to find 1 or 2 individuals who would volunteer their time to help grow our Youth Group. If you have a love for youth (6th - 12th graders) then you would be perfect. See Pastor Hahn for more details. Looking for Volunteers to help with Mission and Outreach in our ever-growing and culturally diverse neighborhood If you can spare one hour of your time every week to help those in need, then you are the person we are looking for. Some of the needs include helping refugees and immigrants speak English, cook, sew, fill our paperwork, etc. See Pastor Hahn for more details. Church Council and Board Positions Needed to be Filled:  Congregational Chairperson  Congregational Secretary  Board of Education (currently vacant)  Board of Youth (currently vacant)  Board of Evangelism (currently vacant)  Board of Stewardship (currently vacant) It is time to search your heart for service to the Lord in an area of leadership at Christ Lutheran Church. We are right now in a NEED time. Pray about it. If you are interested or the Lord is leading you toward serving in this capacity contact our current Congregational Vice-Chairperson (Karra Hartog) or Pastor Hahn.

Why Are We Having Cottage Meetings? As part of Christ Lutheran Church's on-going Reconciliation (healing of broken relationships) Effort we are providing opportunities to talk openly with one another and focus upon healing broken relationships, both our relationship with God and our relationship with one another. As we seek healing the Cottage Meetings provide an opportunity to get to know one another better as brothers and sisters in Christ. The Cottage Meetings also provide opportunity to dream together as we move toward a preferred future at Christ Lutheran Church. There are 2 Cottage Meetings scheduled for the month of August (Sunday August 13th and Sunday, August 27th). These meeting will take place at 10:30am. There are sign-up sheets available in the entry area of the church on the bulletin board. We hope you take the opportunity to attend one of these meetings. All the meetings are the same except that there are different people at each of the meetings so you only need attend one. If you have any other questions about the Cottage Meetings talk to Pastor Hahn or one of the Elders. Sunday School Is Right Around The Corner! Sunday School will be starting up again in September! Rally Sunday is scheduled for Sunday, September 10th. More information will be getting out to you about the special event we are planning for Rally Sunday. Make sure you are reading the Weekly News and Announcements and the Monthly Newsletter for that information and other news of Christ Lutheran Church. THANK YOU for the many cards, gifts, and well-wishes at the "retirement (again!)" coffee time last week. Thank you for the opportunities to continue to preach the Good News of Jesus the past seven years. It was also a privilege to visit with and share the Sacrament with CLC's homebound members. As I looked around last Sunday, I saw several people and was struck by the privilege I had to "go through the valley of the shadow of death" with your loved ones. That was a sacred privilege. God's blessings to all at CLC. -- Pastor Heggen.

New Temporary Address for Dale Vogt: Dale had a stroke on July 23rd, and he is currently recovering at the Woodbury Health Care Center. Attention: Monitor Techs Needed! Kelly Callahan needs more volunteers to be Monitor Techs at either worship service. Very little computer experience is needed. She will gladly train you! This is your chance to do something new at CLC!

From the CLC Vice-Chairperson: Stewardship Stewardship means the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care, stewardship of natural resources. Did you know that as a member of CLC you are considered one of our greatest, most precious natural resources? There is a need to put together a Stewardship Committee for a short period of time – September through October. We are looking for 3-4 people to help and have one position already filled! We need a Pastor, who is Pastor Hahn, we need a chairperson, a publicity coordinator, and a couple of congregational people to help with various duties. Pastor has the information. We have details in a notebook that just need to be followed!! Just looking for a few people who would like to help for a short-term project. “Take the task He gives you gladly, Let His work your pleasure be; answer quickly when He calleth, ‘Here am I, send me, send me!’” (LSB 826)

Christ Lutheran Has Leadership Openings We are in need of a Congregational President. Whether you are a man or a woman, young or old, new to the congregation or an established member, your God given talents are needed and will be appreciated. Requirements of this position are few; attend Council Meetings and to run Voter’s Meetings. Please consider! Any questions or interest in this position, please contact Pastor Hahn, Dick Swedean, Dick Bielengberg or Karra Hartog.

POBLO Service Opportunity! “The mission field is here; the time is now!” POBLO International is a LCMS-affiliated, non-profit organization that honors the Lord by reaching out to internationals and immigrants. Last year our church had the opportunity to listen to Nadar who is the POBLO missionary in the Twin Cities. POBLO International is in the process of establishing a 2nd International Friendship Center at Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Burnsville. They are looking for a few individuals that would be willing to attend one training seminar and then give one hour a week to help. This is an opportunity to show the love of Christ to someone who can use a smile and a welcome. There are flyers on the front table in the Narthex – please take one and consider this opportunity. We have some people already interested in helping – please join us! Any questions, please contact Pastor Hahn or Karra Hartog.

Meet Our New Preschool Director/Teacher! Mrs. Wendy Ewald has accepted the position of Christ Lutheran’s Preschool Director/Teacher for the coming year. We thank the Lord for providing such a well-qualified person to work together with the members of Christ to reach out to those around us. Here is a note from her and information about her background: Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! My name is Wendy Ewald, and I have been in Lutheran Education for 37 years, alternating between classroom teaching and starting and directing early childhood centers for churches in the Twin Cities area. My three brothers and I grew up in Cottage Grove, MN. I graduated from Concordia St. Paul in 1979 with my Lutheran Educator’s Degree and a B.A. in Elementary Education. I began my career at St. John Lutheran in Berlin, WI teaching third grade. This is where I met and married my husband Richard, and where we had our first 2 children. After 4 years, I took a job teaching preschool at a local childcare center for 5 years. In 1989 I took a call to Golden Valley Lutheran to start and direct their early childhood center. In 2000 I took a call to Bethlehem Lutheran in St. Paul to expand their preschool to include full day childcare and school age, and two years later I took a call to Mt. Calvary to teach second grade. When Mt. Calvary closed in 2009, I took a call to King of Kings in Roseville to start, direct, and teach their preschool program. In 2015 I took a call to clean up and direct Open Arms Christian Early Childhood Center. I fulfilled my role there, and after 1 year I wanted to be back in the classroom, so I took a one-year call to teach first grade at Trinity Lutheran in Mpls. Now I am delighted to be at Christ Lutheran Church and Preschool! I love being in the classroom and watching the children grow and develop in all areas: spiritually, emotionally, socially, physically, and intellectually. There is no other occupation that excites me the way teaching does and I am so blessed to be able to follow my dreams. My husband Richard and I live in Bloomington. We have 2 married daughters and one son. Our oldest daughter Christine and her husband have blessed us with 2 grandchildren that we adore and love to spend time with! Our youngest daughter Brittany and her husband just had their first child in July – Cameron! Our son Tim is a nurse and works at the V.A. hospital. Besides spending time with our kids and grandkids, I also enjoy spending time with my husband, gardening, walking, and reading during my free time. I look forward to getting to know the children and families of Christ Lutheran Preschool and the members of Christ Lutheran Church and have been earnestly praying that God will use me to be a blessing this year. To Him be the glory!

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! It’s good to be in this place at this time! I look forward to getting to know everyone at Christ Lutheran and pray that I will be a blessing to the children, families, staff, and congregation. I have been very busy trying to “learn the ropes” at Christ Lutheran. Each church is unique in the way it operates and learning all the policies and procedures can be challenging. I just ask everyone to be patient with me and let me know when I goof up. I will do my best to learn from my mistakes! The preschool is off to a good start with registrations for the 2017-2018 school year. We are at 20 in the morning M-W-F class and 10-11 are staying for the full day. We have 8 children in our T-Th morning class and 4 are staying for the extended day. If you know of anyone looking for T and Th, please let them know we are still accepting registrations for those days. If they are in need of M-W-F, we can take children on a waiting list. Our Open House and Ice Cream Social was a great success! Many of our currently enrolled families came to meet me and pay their registration fees, and we also had several new families stop by. I had a chance to visit with each of them, answer their questions, and give them some paperwork. We are hoping some of the new families will be enrolling their children in the T-Th class. We even had a few church members stop by for ice cream. That was a nice surprise! Many thanks to Karra for scooping ice cream and pouring soda for Root Beer Floats! Help Needed: All the toys, baskets, and shelves will need to be washed and disinfected prior to the start of the new school year. It’s a HUGE job and one that we would love some help with! If you have some time to spare in August and would like to help out with this monumental task, please feel free to give me a call. It can be done at your convenience for any amount of time you can spare. I would like to say a sincere Thank You to Michele for all the training she has given me over the past two weeks and for the way she has been working to wrap things up as she prepares for a new calling. She has been a blessing to Christ Lutheran and I know she will be missed! We will be praying for a smooth transition for Michele as she sees where the Lord is leading her! Please feel free to stop by and introduce yourselves to me. I can’t promise I will remember everyone’s name the first time, but I’ll eventually get it! In His Love, Grace, and Forgiveness, Wendy Ewald Christ Lutheran Preschool Director/Teacher

Eagan Pointe Worship On the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month a Worship Service, led by Pastor Hahn, is held at the Eagan Pointe Senior Living. It begins at 10am on the 2nd floor in the activity room. Anyone is welcome to worship with us.

2017 VBS Day Camp Joyce Swedean, Director On July 10th the Camp Omega Counselors and volunteers from CLC and Ascension Lutheran welcomed 70 children aging in range from 3 years old to 12 years old. They were ready to sing, play games, eat snacks/lunch, but most importantly hear about the “rEVOLution” LOVE of Jesus through Bible Stories and Bible verses. We met Abraham, Ruth and Boaz, Jesus, the Good Samaritan, and Paul and Silas. Each day started at 9 am and ended at 3 pm except for Friday when we were done at noon. The children were full of energy 9-3, but I will say by the end of each day the volunteers and counselors looked a little tired – but we returned each morning ready to go! It also helped that kids and adults had a little “quiet time” each day when we watched a Veggie Tale movie. I wish you would have stopped by to see the week in action – you really missed out! One of the traditions is to have Water Day on Thursday, and the weather cooperated even though it was a little on the chilly side. Thank You Lord for providing us with a week of wonderful summer weather! Also on Thursday evening the children presented a program of what they had been doing all week and then had ice cream treats and fellowship afterwards. I wish more of you, CLC members, could have attended this wonderful celebration. Mission Project: This year, the children together with you the members of CLC collected money and food items for the Eagan Open Door. The staff at the Open Door was overwhelmed (as were we) at the outpouring of donations. Throughout the week we collected 170 lbs. of nonperishable items and monetary donations of $696.25. PRAISE THE LORD! One of the traditions is to see which of the groups (we had 4 groups with a counselor assigned to each group) can bring in the most items/money. Each counselor had their own station where the children brought their contributions each day. (I divided up the monies and food items that the congregation provided between each group.) The 2 counselors whose group brought in the most were announced at the end of Thursday evening program, and before we had ice cream treats, we went outside to slime them. We are looking forward to doing this again next year. We are so blessed that Camp Omega has this ministry program for churches and especially the kids. In closing I need to say a HUGE THANK YOU to Camp Counselors Steph, Jessica, Christine and Drew; volunteers Pastor Joel Vano and Sarah Breuer from Ascension; and CLC volunteers Pastor David, Secretary Rhoda, Michele Lukanen, Lois Agrimson, Rebecca Hahn, Karra Hartog, Christa Brown-Switzer, Bonny Jamison, Judy Kaner, Judy Landis, Dick Swedean, Ella Lange, Savannah Switzer, Sarah Jamison, Christopher Hahn, and Antonella Borean for a job well done!

LIVING IN FAITH EVERYDAY – L.I.F.E. GROUPS If you haven’t joined a LIFE group as yet, we invite you to at least visit and experience what the LIFE Groups are all about. Group meeting information: Come join us. Monday, 6:30pm Wednesday, 1:00pm Thursday, 6:30pm Saturday, 9am

LWML Corner At the 1942 LWML organizing convention, the delegates chose the name Lutheran Women’s Missionary League because using the word “missionary” in the name denotes that the women who belong to this organization are encouraged and enabled to win and hold souls for the Master. Still today 75 years later, we are sharing the Gospel using our gifts, words, and actions where God has placed us. We are about faith-raising not fund-raising. The National LWML met to celebrate the 75th Anniversary in Albuquerque NM June 22-25 under the theme Jesus Christ Above All, Philippians 2:9. Our SE Suburban Zone Delegate was Darleen Harens from Messiah Lakeville, and we look forward to hearing her report. The delegates adopted a new 2017-2019 Mission Mite Goal of $2,075,000.00 which will be distributed to the 22 mission grants selected by the delegates. Those grants will be listed on the LWML bulletin board in the narthex along with the thermometer indicating how MITE giving is doing. As of June 30, the women of the LWML have contributed $235,147.52. The attendance for the convention was 3,471, and 850 were first time attendees and 81 were Young Women Representatives – Praise the Lord! Besides carrying out the business the participants heard from missionaries and guest speakers; studied God’s Word, celebrated in worship; brought Gifts from the Heart; and fellowshipped with old and new sisters and brothers in Christ. What is happening here at CLC: Officers: President Eileen Gregory; Secretary Ladonna Discher; Treasurer Linda Wolf. After careful consideration we will no longer sponsor the Annual Boutique. Many thanks to Eileen Gregory who has given many tireless hours to this project over the years. We disbursed the following Mission monies: $75.00 Thank offering for the 75th Anniversary of the LWML; $200.00 to the Joint Seminary Fund; and $100.00 to our CLC Preschool. We will meet on the Second Saturday at 9:30 am during the following months: September and December 2017, and May 2018. Watch the News and Announcements and Newsletters for more information. Please join us! Mark your calendars for the upcoming Fall Conference Rally Saturday October 28, 2017 at Rose of Sharon Lutheran Church in Cottage Grove. It will begin at 8:30 am with Registration, rally beginning at 9 am with a lunch served at Noon. The speaker will be Pastor Chad Cziscke who serves as a chaplain ministering to the men and women in the Armed Services. The Gifts from the Heart will be monetary gifts to the LCMS Ministry to the Office of the Armed Forces. We will carpool from CLC. Remember to pick up copies of the LWML Quarterly (lots of interesting articles for all women) and Women on a Mission newsletter which tells of what is going on in the District LWML.

Get ready to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation with these great events at CSP:

Reformation Heritage Lecture Series August 29 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm Rev. Dr. Andrew H. Bartelt is the featured speaker at the annual Reformation Heritage Lecture Series, Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Buenger Education Center on Concordia’s campus. This event is free and open to the public. Presentation title: After 500 Years, Does Lutheranism Still Matter? As we mark 500 years since the Reformation, how might the unique strengths of Lutheran theology serve the mission of God’s kingdom come in Jesus Christ—and indeed will they?

“Luther” – Concordia St. Paul Theatre Production John Osborne’s Luther is an epic retelling of one of the great epochs in Western civilization, this play is an exploration of the larger-than-life personality of the great reformer himself: passionate, fiery, and earthy. At times, this Luther is the quintessential “angry young man,” fighting against all the great powers that govern his life. Then all at once he reveals himself to have the sensitivity of an innocent child desperately in need of love and protection. In writing that is often raw, direct and emotional – much like the legacy of the historical Luther himself – the play presents a vivid portrait of a man whose many contradictions and personal struggles nevertheless led to one of the great spiritual and political revolutions in human history. October 26-29, 7:30 p.m LOCATION: E.M. Pearson Theatre, 312 Hamline Ave N, St. Paul TICKETS: $10 (Discounts available for students/seniors/children under 12) Church groups of 10 or more receive $5 tickets. Tickets available at Ticketworks.com

Reformation 500 Worship Service October 29 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm Reformation 500 weekend will be highlighted by a worship service in the Gangelhoff Center on Sunday, Oct. 29. The worship service will include a sermon from LCMS President Rev. Dr. Matthew Harrison, performances from mass youth and adult choirs, instrumental ensembles, and more.
