Verse of the Week: Acts 2:42

Blest be the tie that binds Our hearts in Christian love; The fellowship of kindred minds Is like to that above. Before our Father’s throne We pour our ardent prayers; Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, Our comforts and our cares. We share our mutual woes, Our mutual burdens bear, And often for each other flows The sympathizing tear. When here our pathways part, We suffer bitter pain; Yet, one in Christ and one in heart, We hope to meet again. From sorrow, toil, and pain, And sin we shall be free And perfect love and friendship reign Through all eternity. How much do you know about Memorial Day? (From Mental Floss website: 10 Things to Remember about Memorial Day by David Holzel, May 29, 2016)

Memorial Day is much more than just a three-day weekend and the unofficial beginning of summer. Memorial Day was a response to the unprecedented carnage of the Civil War, in which some 620,000 soldiers on both sides died. On May 5, 1868, Commander Gen. Logan issued General Orders No. 11, which set aside May 30, 1868 "for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion." The holiday was long known as Decoration Day for the practice of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags. The name Memorial Day goes back to 1882, but the older name didn't disappear until after World War II. Federal law declared "Memorial Day" the official name in 1967. Although there are no prescribed ways to celebrate the day, over time several customs and symbols became associated with the holiday: •

It is customary on Memorial Day to fly the flag at half-staff until noon, and then raise it to the top of the staff until sunset.

Taps, the 24-note bugle call, is played at all military funerals and memorial services.

The World War I poem "In Flanders Fields," by John McCrea, inspired the Memorial Day custom of wearing red artificial poppies. The sale of poppies has supported the work of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In 2000, Congress established a National Moment of Remembrance, which asks Americans to pause for one minute at 3pm in an act of national unity. The time was chosen because 3pm "is the time when most Americans are enjoying their freedoms on the national holiday." So go ahead and enjoy the holiday! Many have sacrificed to give us the freedom we enjoy, and that’s something to celebrate as we remember them.

Voters’ Meeting on Sunday, May 21!

Mission Trip to Macedonia! Hannah Hartog is taking another trip with Habitat for Humanity – this time to Macedonia with 24 other team members to build apartment complexes in Veles. She will be there June 9-17. Hannah is covering most of the expenses herself (including her airfare and other trip costs), but she still needs $425. Any amount donated would be very much appreciated. You can either write a check to Hannah Hartog or donate the money at her fundraising page: https://share.habitat.org/hannahhartog-gvt17703. Also, keep Hannah in your prayers as she prepares for her trip. We look forward to her sharing about it after she returns!
