Thanksgiving Through The Ages The first official presidential proclamation issued in America was George Washington's 1789 Thanksgiving message to the people of the United States. He recommended to the people: "...that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country... " Later, when the constitution was severely tested in the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln also issued a thanksgiving proclamation: "I do therefore invite my fellow citizens ... to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to ... fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it … to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union." Today we once again face monumental challenges in America and around the world. But as our Forefathers did in the midst of their trials, we must us also take time to seek wisdom and guidance from our Heavenly Father and to thank Him for His blessings. Thanksgiving is an important part of the Christian life. It is the capstone to a life of prayer. The apostle Paul instructed the church in Philippi regarding prayer: "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." (Philippians 4:6) Our requests and intercession are to include thanksgiving as a sign of our faith. We thank the Lord in advance that He hears our prayers, and that He is about a good work, bringing His will to pass in our lives. The Scriptures are filled with prayers of thanksgiving: "I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds." (Psalm 9:1) "To you, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for you have given me wisdom and might, and have now made known to me what we asked of you…" (Daniel 2:23)

Christ Lutheran Church and Preschool 1930 Diffley Road Eagan, MN 55122 Church: 651-454-4091 christlutheraneagan@outlook.com www.christlutheraneagan.org Christ Lutheran Church is a congregation of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod

Christ Lutheran Church is a growing body of believers in Jesus Christ, sharing the love, word, and grace of God with our family, community, and world.

"…addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father…" (Ephesians 5:19) Thanksgiving is also a way that we show humility before Almighty God. One day Jesus witnessed this kind of a grateful heart when He healed a group of ten lepers. Luke writes: "And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks." (Luke 17:14-16) Jesus made note of his humility in thanksgiving, but also of the lack of thanks on the part of the others: "Then Jesus answered, ‘Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner? And he said to him, Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.’" (Luke 17:17-19) May we be like this one leper who was healed and then came back to give thanks. As we celebrate with our family and friends, let us do so with a heart of thanksgiving for all that God has done in our lives over this past year. And in faith, thank Him for all that He is going to do in the year to come – because there is tremendous power in Thanksgiving!

Feed My Starving Children Project! We just found out that the meals we pack on November 11 and 12 will be going to support those recovering from the effects of Hurricane Matthew. In some parts of Haiti, 100% of the crops and livestock were lost. The meals we pack at this event are desperately needed! There is still time to sign up at the church or by calling Sharonlee Strohkirch at 962-341-1865. Remember, this is your opportunity to help make the Minnesota South District’s goal of 1,000,000 packs! Where: Woodbury Lutheran Church 7380 Afton Rd. Woodbury, MN 55125

When: Friday, November 11, 2016, 1-3 pm Saturday, November 12, 2016, 9-11 am

2016 Christmas Tea ’But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel’. (Matthew 3:6) It seems odd that Christianity started in the Middle East, yet most of our Christmas traditions, like the Christmas Tea, are distinctively European. With this year’s Christmas Tea, CLC is bringing Christmas back to its Middle-Eastern roots by sharing some wonderful food and supporting an LCMS mission known for their work in the Middle East, POBLO International. POBLO International is a missionary group in the Middle East and a resource for Arab-American Christians and refugees in the United States. POBLO International has planted close to 100 churches in the places like Afghanistan and Pakistan. They have also trained multitudes of Arab missionaries to spread the Word of God in their native language. Here in the United States, POBLO International supports Arab Christians and provides assistance to Middle-Eastern refugees. Two missionaries from POBLO International will be coming to share their stores and show you how your support will help benefit the people POBLO International serves. Please join us on December 10th from 11:00 - 1:30 in the Fellowship Hall for a spectacular meal, engaging conversation, and a wonderful opportunity to help our Middle-Eastern brothers and sisters in Christ, who have literally walked in the footsteps of Jesus. Tickets are $15 each with $10 donated directly to POBLO International. Tickets will be on sale starting November 5th. Only 100 tickets will be sold for this spectacular event. You can reserve your tickets by contacting Gabriel Hartog (email: gabriel.hartog@gmail.com, Phone: 612-212-8919).

LIVING IN FAITH EVERYDAY – LIFE GROUPS Prayer is a vital part of living in faith everyday. LIFE groups are prayer warriors, and it is a big part of our time in God’s Word, fellowship, and serving our church and community., We value that connection with our God. As I pondered this I remembered a story by Max Lucado entitled: Prayer Is This Simple My father let me climb onto his lap – when he drove! He’d be arrested for doing so today. But half a century ago, no one cared. Especially on a flat-as-a-skillet West Texas oil field, where rabbits out number people. I loved it. Did it matter that I couldn’t see over the dash? That my feet stopped two feet shy of the brake and accelerator? That I didn’t know a radio from a carburetor? By no means. I helped my dad drive his truck. Did I fear driving into the ditch? Overturning the curve? Running the tire into a rut? By no means. Dad’s hands were next to mine, his eyes keener than mine. Consequently, I was fearless! Anyone can drive a car from the lap of a father. And anyone can pray from the same perspective. Prayer is the practice of sitting calmly in God’s lap and placing our hands on his steering wheel. He handles the speed and hard curves and ensures safe arrival. And we offer our requests; we ask our God to “take this cup away.” (Mark 14:36) This cup of disease, betrayal, financial collapse, joblessness, conflict, or senility. Prayer Is this simple. Be specific about your fears. Putting your worries into words disrobes then. They look silly standing there naked. We thank you gracious God , for the privilege of prayer. We can be grateful we can talk to You anywhere, anytime and share our burdens and blessings with our Father. Confident that you will hear us and answer our prayers. Amen. (Check these out: John 14:13; I Samuel 1:27; and Psalm 34:4) The LIFE groups are active in sharing God’s love. The Thursday LIFE Group is doing “Let’s Dish” for a needy family. In November The LIFE groups are packing meals for Feed My Starving Children. We are joining the churches in our Minnesota South District at Woodbury Lutheran Church. The goal is to provide a million meals for these children. If you would like to join us Nov. 11 at 12-2pm or Nov. 12 at 9-11am, you may sign up in the narthex or call Sharonlee at 952431-1865. You may also contribute to the cost of these meals. If you haven’t joined a group as yet, we invite you to at least visit and experience what the LIFE Groups are all about. Group meeting information: Come join us. There is an empty chair just for you. Transportation Help Needed! The two families who help transport the Scotts to church every Sunday need a few others to help out. There are three in the family, and two of them use walkers, so your vehicle needs to be able to accommodate them. They live in Eagan, on Balsam Trail. It will only take a few extra minutes, and with enough help, you only have to do it once a month or so. If you can help, please call Sandi Meyer at 651-4547093 or Don Ohmann at 651-454-8623.

PRESCHOOL NEWS By Director Michele Lukanen Conference Notes In October I attended the tri-annual Lutheran Educator’s Association Convocation in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The theme for the convocation was Grow! The keynote speakers focused on growing our students and growing as leaders. I attended six different sectionals over the two day convocation. My favorites included Awesome Authors and Artists, GROWing Self-Regulation in Early Childhood Environments, and Graceful Accountability. In the first, Awesome Authors and Artists, I was provided a list of authors and artists that can be used for author or artist units. It fits well into Christ Lutheran as I have established a two-year curriculum cycle of authors one year and artists the next. My next favorite was GROWing Self-Regulation in Early Childhood Environments. Drew Gerdes, the presenter, has such a great sense of humor and love for children; one cannot help but to be inspired by him. His presentation centered on how Mr. Rogers had it right. Even though Mr. Rogers is no longer on television, those of us who grew up with him can still be inspired by the way he taught children, interacted with children, and inspired children. We as educators need to slow down sometimes and really value to uniqueness of each child. Last was Graceful Accountability. This sectional was geared toward administrators and provided uplifting and useful ideas on how to interact with those whom we are in charge. We can keep people accountable while lifting that person up and treating them with love and respect. Preschool Closed The preschool will be closed on November 4 while the teachers and I attend a local conference. The preschool will also be closed November 21-25. Parent/Teacher conferences are the 21st and 22nd and Thanksgiving Break is the 23-25.

LWML CORNER by Joyce Swedean Thanks to everyone who contributed to our LWML door offering on LWML Sunday. We collected $107.35 which will be sent in to support the Mission Grants for the District and National LWML. We hope to see you and your friends at the Holiday Boutique on Saturday, November 5th from 9-4. Don’t forget to bring non-perishable food for the Open Door during November. We will not have our regular meeting in November. “God is glorified, not by our groans, but by our thanksgivings.”

Please join Camp Omega in its Annual Appreciation Event on Sunday, November 20, at the Faribault American Legion. This year's focus of appreciation is on those dedicated volunteers who shared with their congregation members the opportunity to become involved in the Camp Omega Capital Campaign to build an Adult and Family Retreat Center. The result has been a huge boost in the efforts to complete this undertaking which we know will take place in God's time. Arrive at 4:30 for social hour and introductions, followed by a FREE turkey supper and entertainment by the Metro-area barbershop quartet, "Oh, Brother!" A brief update on the campaign will also be shared. Your participation is NOT based on your involvement in the campaign. It will certainly assist in letting these volunteers know how much they are appreciated. RSVP is a MUST! Call Curt at 507-330-5627 or e-mail him at curt@campomega.org by Monday, November 14 to make reservations.
