rtistiKIDS! Encouraging Creativity Through CHRIST.

artistiKIDS! was established in new orleans, La on March 5th, 2005 but was displaced due to the devastating damages caused by hurricane Katrina in august 2005. artistiKIDS! has suffered a tremendous loss but through the grace of god we reestablished our program in 2008 as a mobile arts ministry program in San antonio, Texas. artistiKIDS! is a professional, visual arts studio dedicated to providing a warm and stimulating environment, infusing play with interdisciplinary art experiences that build self-confidence, social skills, and academic readiness. children have unique learning styles and prefer new material to be introduced in creative ways rather than just memorizing information provided by teachers or parents.

lations, programming and all other aspects of studio operations. our goal is to inspire and transform lives through the power of individual artistic expression, while fostering christ-centered faith in the families we serve. Thank you for choosing artistiKIDS! Studio. We are committed to excellence in visual arts and strive to provide the best for you, your children and the community ...... to know, love, and serve Jesus christ.

our classes are challenging and “hands on”, allowing exploration of a variety of fun techniques designed to peak curiosity, create excitement and nurture the creative spirit of artistically talented children, including “at-risk” children and their families.

creative thinking reaches that network through its membership program, newsletter, electronic mailing list, and social networking sites.

OUR STORY . . . In 2006, recognizing that hawai‘i’s growing and evolving fashion community was without a central resource for information, networking, and advocacy, Melissa May White and Toby Portner co-founded the hawai‘i Fashion Incubator (hifi). hifi is a membership-based organization whose mission is to inspire, promote, and sustain an integrated fashion community in hawai‘i. hifi's goal is to restore fashion’s place in hawai‘i’s economic and cultural identity through community-building and alliances with education, economic development, the arts, and tourism.

OUR MISSION . . . hifi’s mission is to inspire, promote, and sustain an integrated fashion community in hawai‘i. hifi aims to raise awareness and appreciation of fashion as both art and industry through alliances with the arts, government, and business sectors, cultural organizations, and educational institutions. hifi’s membership program fosters collaboration and resource sharing within hawai‘i’s fashion community, providing guidance and resources and linking local talent with the global marketplace.

hifi's co-founders conceptualized the hawai‘i Fashion Incubator as a central hub where members of the community can interact, collaborate, and collectively drive the local fashion industry forward, drawing inspiration from fashion incubators elsewhere (e.g., Toronto, Los angeles, new zealand). In april 2007 hifi hosted an event at the arts at Mark's garage to introduce the concept and solicit the input of the local fashion community. a panel of local fashion professionals discussed the future of hawaii's fashion industry and 50 attendees completed surveys, the results of which have helped inform hifi’s mission and projects. In May 2008 hifi launched its membership program.

MEET THE FOUNDERS . . . Melissa May White has been enamored of fashion since childhood. a onetime designer and fashion writer, her current passion is bringing the community together around fashion.

hifi’s network presently reaches over 1,000 members of the local fashion community, from buyers & retailers to designers, media, photographers, models, event planners, makeup artists, educators, students, and fashion enthusiasts. It

Toby Portner has carried a threefold passion for fashion, wellness, and education through her career so far. She's weaving them together, providing opportunities for individuals and families to learn and create together.

DJs Bring Rise to Electronic Revolution (newsuSa) - The French DJ kings Daft Punk took the club scene over one single at a time, with electronic dance hits like "one More Time" and "harder, better, Faster, Stronger" reaching the top of the charts in the u.K. and u.S. Their commercial success opened the door for other popular DJs, like Tiesto, Diplo, Swedish house Mafia and up-and-coming artist DJ Ladé. "Many of these acclaimed DJs start out in the underground club scene, getting a feel for what people want to hear and jive to. Then, if they have the potential and marketability, they get signed and start laying beats for big-name artists. From the clubs in Philly, Diplo moved on to work with acts like Missy elliot and Lil' Jon," explains Jake Shapiro from big Jake Music, a record label based in the big apple. "DJ Ladé is on a similar track. he's built a solid fan base at some of new York city's hottest clubs. Like many great DJs, when he is in the zone, he is amazing to watch, let alone listen anddance to," Shapiro added. Ladé remixed "Little Lion Man" from the british indie-folk band Mumford & Sons, infusing their vocals with his electronic edge. although his enthusiasm for electronic dance music is prominent now, Ladé's career originated with his love for rock. Like many musicians, he started young -- very young. Ladé performed alongside talented artists and carved a musical niche for himself before he even hit puberty. by the time he was a sophomore in high school, Ladé could play the violin, piano and drums and write his own music. he soon mastered the technical side of the creative process as he engineered and produced tracks using synthesizers and other electronic aspects. once he began producing dance music, DJing just fell into place. Ladé says it fulfills his passion for performance, and being a DJ is just a "natural extension of playing the drums." but Ladé's style is certainly unique. "he's recognized as one of the few DJ's in new York city who spins in a more traditional and musical style, without the use of a computer or software," says Shapiro.

New Media AT THE FooT oF THE MounTAIn by Dubkonscious • www.dubkonscious.com

at The Foot of the Mountain by Dubkonscious is one of the first cDs I got my hands on after touching down on the island of Maui and I believe it was written in the stars that it would become one of my favorite. This cD is brimming with some of the best vibes from the islands as they begin with track one, Satisfied, which can be used to sum up your mood once you've listened through the entire cD. In true island style, the music from at The Foot of the Mountain will keep you moving while subconsciously injecting you with feelings of love, tolerance, peace of mind, heart and soul. Lyrically, at The Foot of the Mountain, shows feeling and superb arrangement as each track takes you through it's own journey. I could feel the words through my headphones and you can't help but know they come from somewhere deep within. The audio production and recording were both blended well and seamless, giving room for each well placed vocal, horn, rhythm and purcussion element to shine through. I only wish more time was taken when deciding on overall song order and arrangement to keep the track flow on a smooth plane. overall, it is easy to tell that this multipart group has worked together long enough to learn each other's skills and subtle nuances. They blend together well and show plenty of staying power. 4 out of 5 Stars Dubkonscious Players: Mike Love-Vocals and Keyboards, blaine Mateo-bass guitar, Keola nakamura-Trombone, bernie SorianoTrumpet, brandon hutson-Trombone, Kevin richards-electric guitar, brett richards-electric guitar, Sam gonsalves-Drums, Koalani Lagareta-Vocals, Paula Fuga-Vocals.

The Stop online Piracy Act (SoPA) is a united States bill introduced by u.S. Representative Lamar S. Smith (R-TX) to expand the ability of u.S. law enforcement to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods. Provisions include the requesting of court orders to bar advertising networks and payment facilities from conducting business with infringing websites, and search engines from linking to the sites, and court orders requiring Internet service providers to block access to the sites. The law would expand existing criminal laws to include unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content, imposing a maximum penalty of five years in prison. a similar bill in the u.S. Senate is titled the ProTecT IP act (PIPa). Proponents of the legislation state it will protect the intellectual-property market and corresponding industry, jobs and revenue, and is necessary to bolster enforcement of copyright laws, especially against foreign websites. claiming flaws in present laws that do not cover foreign-owned and operated sites, and citing examples of "active promotion of rogue websites" by u.S. search engines, proponents assert stronger enforcement tools are needed. opponents state the proposed legislation threatens free speech and innovation, and enables law enforcement to block access to entire internet domains due to infringing content posted on a single blog or webpage. They have raised concerns that SoPa would bypass the "safe harbor" protections from liability presently afforded to Internet sites by the Digital Millennium copyright act. Library associations have expressed concerns that the legislation's emphasis on stronger copyright enforcement would expose libraries to prosecution. other opponents state that requiring search engines to delete a domain name could begin a worldwide arms race of unprecedented censorship of the Web and violates the First amendment. on January 18, 2012, the english Wikipedia, reddit, and an estimated 7,000 other smaller websites coordinated a service blackout, or posted links and images in protest against SoPa and PIPa, in an effort to raise aware-

ness. In excess of 160 million people viewed Wikipedia's banner. a number of other protest actions were organized, including petition drives, with google stating it collected over 7 million signatures, boycotts of companies that support the legislation, and a rally held in new York city. In response to the protest actions, the recording Industry association of america (rIaa) stated, "It's a dangerous and troubling development when the platforms that serve as gateways to information intentionally skew the facts to incite their users and arm them with misinformation", and "it's very difficult to counter the misinformation when the disseminators also own the platform." The sites of several pro-SoPa organizations such as rIaa, cbS.com, and others were slowed or shut down with denial of service attacks started on January 19. Self-proclaimed members of the "hacktivist" group anonymous claimed responsibility and stated the attacks were a protest of both SoPa and the united States Department of Justice's shutdown of Megaupload on that same day. opponents of the bill have proposed the online Protection and enforcement of Digital Trade act (oPen) as an alternative. on January 20, 2012, house Judiciary committee chairman Smith postponed plans to draft the bill: "The committee remains committed to finding a solution to the problem of online piracy that protects american intellectual property and innovation ... The house Judiciary committee will postpone consideration of the legislation until there is wider agreement on a solution."

“My name is Louis Black and I live my dreams everyday.”

The IncubaTor™ MagazIne • March 2012 • 13

hether you’ve heard of Louis Black (not Lewis Black the coW median) or not, you’ve certainly

heard of the annual south By southwest Music, Film & Interactive Festival; and if you haven’t hear of that then there’s just no hope for you when it comes to the media business.

In it’s 26th year, the sXsW Festival has become one of the largest festivals in America, featuring music, film, and interactive attractions with more than 2000 performers in 90+ venues, over nine days. Though the sXsW Festival is a story in itself, we wanted to learn about the person, or persons, behind the curtain pulling the strings. Louis Black, Editor of the Austin Chronicle, Co-founder and Executive Director of the sXsW Festival is just that person. Louis Black was born in Teaneck, New Jersey where he grew up in a modest household with the typical family issues where he struggled through school and was never regarded as an academic. He openly considers himself an “academic failure” who frequently battled with reading skills. Academics aside, he was childhood friends

with film critic Leonard Maltin and regularly prowled the rep cinemas of Manhattan with him as teens. Prior to his success in print and media, Louis travelled up and down the east coast, living and working as best he could with no real plan or goal. All he know is that he love film. Following his passion, he moved to Austin to study film at The university of Texas where he received a BFA in 1980 and became very knowledgeable about B-movies, including the work of russ Meyer. Black helped run film nights at the university before starting the Chronicle with film friend Nick Barbaro. The first idea of what would become the sXsW Festival was suggested by friends some time before The Austin Chronicle found it’s success and due to the fact that sXsW would have to be funded by Austin Chronicle cashflow, or lack there-of, Black was less than enthusiastic about the idea and it took quite a while for him to warm up to the idea... and we’re glad he finally came around. read more about Louis Black and the history of the sXsW Festival on our website at www.incmagonline.com
