Urban Future 2018 Location Date

Smithfield Market, London April, 2018

With the increasing population and the constant renovation of spaces in London, in 2038 the iconic Smithfield Market will transform into a multi-functional public square. The Field will house an insect market, a clean air sanctuary and an energy efficient nightclub. Using a smart infrastructure managed by an artificial intelligence generated system, the space will adapt to the specific spatial demands answering to visitors musical, nutritional and lighting preferences gathered and tracked through data connectivity.

Designed by ARUP, Smithfield Market is the UK’s largest meat market, which was constructed in 1961–1963 to replace a Victorian market building in Smithfield, London. Its roof is claimed to be the largest concrete shell structure ever built, and the largest clear spanning dome roof in Europe.

Offering new culinar y experiences with alternative sources of protein, the Insect Market will be the only cer tified place in the UK to sell insects. Working on a circular economy base, the market will run automated waste systems, drone deliver y as well as local food production.

Sensor y generated energy platforms fuelled by visitors dance moves will power the space’s energetic needs while offering a nightlife experience. Perfect for today’s gender fluid insect eating 24 hour par ty generation.

By 2038 the air quality will force dwellers to wear masks on a daily basis. In response to this, The Field will provide a sanctuar y for visitors to remove their masks and enjoy a moment of clean air.

Toussaint L’Ouver ture - Equality and Freedom, Then and Now is designed to tell a multifaceted narrative in an extremely small space. Made for all ages, cultures, and ethnicities (the wide audience of the British Museum) it will only be in the British Museum a s a t emporar y e xhibit. Linking the elements given to us by the brief with the audiences desires was completed through choosing the theme of freedom and equality for all and then incorporating the juxtaposition of historical information against contemporar y ar t and figures. We decided upon the theme of freedom and equality for all in order to be have people from all backgrounds connect to the elements of the narrative. As our research proved that most visitors of the British Museum were not of African descent, the narrative would need to still resonate with the visitors own lives while keeping the cultural continuity of the African origin of the narrative. Choosing to incorporate contemporar y ar t elements and modern activists from across the globe would perform the task of connecting with the present day audience, while the design elements such as colors and the use of African fabrics would maintain the idea that the narrative began in A frica, a ccomplishing t he b rief.

The composition of light and shadow offers an impor tant clue into our understanding and perception of this world. Delving fur ther from a physical standpoint, “light and shadow” forms a relative basis with objects to visually cast a dependent personality of existence. Just as light is projected on the painting canvas, a sculpture, or even paper, the ar twork can be perceived by the visual senses. Thus, ar t is brilliantly “embellished” by the light while at same time opening up the path into the ar twork’s field of vision for the viewer.

TRAFFIC FLOW

“Light and shadow” are channeled structurally in the exhibition space as an existence waiting to be captured within the eyes of the viewer, as the ar tistic field is realized in full at this exhibition through disassembly and reassembly of its significance. In addition to the accumulation of educated material in ar t design or contemporar y ar ts, we need to consider whether if a sensual experience that is more straightforward can be used to invite the viewer into the museum space. Within the light and shadow, the viewer is guided for appreciation and establishment of a relationship in obser vation and understanding the exhibits – fur ther exploring the interdependency between the “human” and the “object.”

Through user testing, we know better about children's behavior. We have tested that with which size of objects can children hold it better, and with which pressure of the button can children control the pen well. We want to know how spinning and pressing work to children. Through several tests, we knew that the idea of spinning is better since the pen can be more stable for the powders to come out.

Veggie Planet This product is aim to solve the picky earing problem of children. From all the research, we realized that only with the company of parents’ love can children improve their picky eating habits. Therefore, we aimed to develop a design which not only solve the problem of unbalanced diet but enhance the parent-child interaction by offering a chance of DIY. After slicing, dr ying and grinding, we turn vegetables into podwers and then preser ve them in specail pens. With this design, children can paint on their foods, having fun while they are eating.

HOW TO USE

VIDEO

Turn the outer rack upside down to rinse the vegetables. Put the slicer on the inner rack and slice the vegetables. After finished, overturn the slicer and inner rack at the same time and make the slices fall on the top of slicer.

Buckle the inner rack and the outer rack together. Put the sliced vegetalbes on the rack and then put it into the microwave oven. Finally, set different time and power depending on the kind of vegetables. The slices must be dried totally.

Put the dried slices into the opened grinder. Unscrew the transparent bottle cap and then screw on the grinder.

Crank the grinder to mill the dried slice. The cap of grinder and the alien will rotate at the same time. After grinded, the vegetable powder will fall into the bottle cap.

Screw the pen on the pen cap which filled with powder. Turn the pen cap and the powder will sprinkle in a shape. There are three pens for different powders. Use these pens to create some patterns on foods.

Overturn the pen and open the pattern lid. Choose the ideal pattern from the set and cover back the lid. There are six kinds of patterns.

Pick up all the puzzle plates and compose the head, body and feet for an ideal look. There are three kinds of aliens. With this, children could create what they like.

Put the finished plates on a slice of toast. Shake the pen of different color powder above it for a few times. After picking up the plates, there will be a colorful pattern.
