METHODOLOGY
FLOOR PLAN: VISITOR FLOW GROUND FLOOR
Ground Floor On the ground floor, the visitor becomes engaged immediately with the Forest. After arrival, and from the Forest chooses to dip into the Biogeographic Realm Galleries, which are concealed, behind the elliptical wall, waiting to be discovered by the visitor. Although there is a designed visitor route, galleries can be explored on an ad hoc basis, with visitors entering from either direction. The visitor makes their own decision about how to explore the galleries using the icons in the Forest, to help guide them to make their choice.
First Floor On the first floor the central space is integrated with the surrounding galleries, so in this area, the visitor makes a visual choice about which gallery to look at first, like choosing your favourite chocolate from a box.The visitor uses the central space to circulate around the chocolate box, dipping into various flavours, but again uses the concept of returning to the hub, as in The Forest on the ground floor. Thinking about the central space, we like the concept of creating a gaming hub on the first floor, containing a host of different digital games, all based around the animal kingdom.

T H E N AT I O N AL PO RTR A I T G AL LERY Museum Masterplanning The National Portrait Gallery is unique in being both for and about people. A new project for the complete renewal of the Gallery, Inspiring People, is the most transformative since our home at St Martin’s Place opened in 1896. The project will simultaneously safeguard our heritage and look to the future, allowing us to extend our influence, reach and relevance. Inspiring People will also transform our building, making it more welcoming and appealing to the widest and most diverse audiences possible, as well as restoring historic features of our beautiful Grade1 listed home. Improvements will include a new entrance and forecourt, returning the East Wing back to public use and the creation of a Learning Centre. Beyond the building, we have plans for an inclusive national programme, ambitious international collaborations and an expanded digital strategy, in order to reach new audiences onsite, online and both across Britain and around the globe. The Inspiring People project will enable us to optimise all of our assets for our visitors, including our historic building and world class Collection, helping us reach a broader and more diverse audience. We will become an essential place for those looking to understand the culture that they chose, were born into, or seek to understand. The renewed National Portrait Gallery will be a truly national gallery for everyone, reflecting the Britain of today.

Medieval to Tudors, 1300s-1600s Key Messages and Audiences These galleries display iconic Plantagenet and Tudor por traits in a suite of three distinct rooms. The Collection here is world famous and is an impor tant draw for schools, families and international visitors.
Entrance Hall Portrait of the Day ‘Portrait of the Day’, a digital presentation of live stream voting throughout the Gallery. This will introduce the Collection and engage visitors in an immediate dialogue with others already moving round the Gallery. The trending and everchanging portrait selection will set a dynamic tone of participation and inclusivity. The Nation’s Family Album The installation of the ‘Nation’s Family Album’ in the new Entrance Hall will provide a bold and striking introduction to the re-imagined National Portrait Gallery. It will enable visitors to develop a more intimate and emotional connection with the concepts and questions raised by the Collection and its display. These are the questions that frame the visit: Who am I? Where do I fit in? and How do we express ourselves?

Can biodegradable materials ever truly reflect the values of a luxury brand? Thanks to the extensive research of our students and graduates the answer is a resounding ‘yes’. Alongside LVMH architects, CSM MA Narrative Environments and BA Architecture students and alumni created a host of innovative designs for an LVMH megastore that focused on sustainable practices and materials while also reflecting the luxury products of LVMH.

The composition of light and shadow offers an impor tant clue into our understanding and perception of this world. Delving fur ther from a physical standpoint, “light and shadow” forms a relative basis with objects to visually cast a dependent personality of existence. Just as light is projected on the painting canvas, a sculpture, or even paper, the ar twork can be perceived by the visual senses. Thus, ar t is brilliantly “embellished” by the light while at the same time opening up the path into the ar twork’s field of vision for the viewer.

TRAFFIC FLOW
“Light and shadow” are channeled structurally in the exhibition space as an existence waiting to be captured within the eyes of the viewer, as the artistic field is realized in full at this exhibition through disassembly and reassembly of its significance. In addition to the accumulation of educated material in art design or contemporary arts, we need to consider whether if a sensual experience that is more straightforward can be used to invite the viewer into the museum space. Within the light and shadow, the viewer is guided for appreciation and establishment of a relationship in observation and understanding the exhibits – further exploring the interdependency between the “human” and the “object.”

THE BRITISH MUSEUM THE BRIEF
We were given the task by the British Museum to create a mock exhibit dealing with the controversial topic of the legacy of slavery, the historical figure Toussaint L’Ouver ture, the history of the Haitian Revolution, as well as incorporate 3 given objects and an ar tworkof our choice to convey the theme of activism in relation to these topics. A potential portrait of Toussaint L’Ouverture
THE DRAMATIC CONFLICT
“The narrative bears witness to the best and worst humanity.”
Akan Drum
Etchings of Toussaint L’Ouverture
RATIONALE
Toussaint L’Ouver ture - Equality and Freedom, Then and Now is designed to tell a multifaceted narrative in an extremely small space. Made for all ages, cultures, and ethnicities (the wide audience of the British Museum) it will only be in the British Museum as a temporary exhibit. Linking the elements given to us by the brief with the desires of the audience was completed through choosing the theme of freedom and equality for all and then incorporating the juxtaposition of historical information against contemporary ar t and figures. We decided upon the theme of freedom and equality for all in order to have people from all
backgrounds connect to the elements of the narrative. As our research proved that most visitors of the British Museum were not of African descent, the narrative would need to still resonate with the visitors' own lives while keeping the cultural continuity of the African origin of the story. Choosing to incorporate contemporary ar t elements and modern activists from across the globe would perform the task of connecting with the present-day audience, while the design elements such as colours and the use of African fabrics would maintain the idea that the narrative began in Africa, accomplishing the brief.
Exhibition Design/ The Look of Liber ty
ACTION RESEARCH Through the interaction with the target audience, we gauged the basic idea of how well people know about this historical theme. We asked people to answer the question 'Who is Toussaint L'Ouver ture?' by marking on the sections of 'Know' and 'Don't know.'
MODEL MAKING A handmade scaled model helps us understand the relationship between objects and the audience in the space better. Various materials and techniques were involved in demonstrating the exhibition design.
