PUBLISHER´S MESSAGE In fact, I know many cases of persons who actually feel younger after they started to practice martial arts, not only physically but spiritually speaking. What really matters is the desire to achieve a goal; a person whose objective in life is clear, knows where to go, and does not get lost neither draws back on his attempts to achieve his goals. The Martial Art is a path towards harmony built upon a deep sense of life; its improved method is as useful today as it was in its beginning when Bodhidharma settled down the temple of Shaolin; it takes men to its highest potential development, and awakes his spiritual consciousness. It creates a sense of partnership with the environment, and helps to enjoy a healthy life. The benefits that martial arts bring about are countless; among the most important ones there is breathing training, just to mention one. This practice is incorporated to every martial art movement, due to the importance the air has as a vital energy source to the human body. Unfortunately, men do not always value it and reduces its importance to a simple nothing. But, to “I AM TOO OLD FOR THAT” take advantage of the vital elements of air it is necessary to know how to breathe effectively; breaThe headline of this article is one of the most com- thing deeply widens the lungs capacity since they mon phrases used by martial arts masters. Whatever the answer might be turns irrelevant, the plain truth is that age can not be an obstacle to limit the advance toward learning. In the particular case of martial arts, the majority of people believe that it is all about difficult movements for the body so that the age turns risky to enter a gym.

The practice of martial art also stresses the functions of the immunological system; it releases tensions and reduces stress. It helps the human body to develop a physical and mental balance, develops harmony, agility and vitality. Every muscle, nerve and gland ensures a healthy physical development. The term relaxationoriginated from the Latin term “relaxare”, it is define as the action of relaxing or softening. It could be define as a typical physiological process of interactive character, where the physiological and psychological functions integrate the same process as the cause and as the outcome. The relaxation technique prepares us to calmly and consciously face everyday life situations; it is a human capacity and universal gift we can all activate and use to produce concrete changes in our bodies. It allows the body to establish a perfect visible harmony of the movements it carries out. The activity of the brain provides the body with vital information about the intensity of relaxation. The brain emits certain types of waves; each of them has its own frequency; such as. The wave which reflects the everyday normal conscious frequency which is called the beta; the delta wave present when sleeping and dreaming; the thetawave representing a state similar to sleeping; and the alphawave, which relates to a deep relaxation stage and emotional serenity. The alpha y theta waves are closely related to relaxation and meditation; it indicates a state of harmony.

Through a regular practice of relaxation a sense of tranquility and sincerity about oneself is achieved; the mind runs away from all kinds of action, responsibility and concern. Martial Arts, have been influenced by all kind of philosophical and religious doctrines from la India such as: Hinduism, Buddhism, Yoga, and some other that lately came from Japan, China and some other countries from Asia; among them we have: Taoism, Confucianism, Shintoism, Buddhism and , Chan Zen, Among others. All these doctrines brought about exercises and meditation, concentration and contemplation methods just to mention some. The Samadhi, which in Sanskrit means “immobility state”, represents a radical transformation of the Yogui; it expresses a victory over existence, from this perspective, the soul is really relived though the individual continues to be alive. Immerse in Samadhi, the mind is withdrawn from environs, so, it turns invulnerable to profit or loss, to reputation or notoriety, to praise or condemn, or to sorrow or joy. After a brief description of some of the many capacities and benefits that the practice of martial arts may bring about to men at any age, I believe we must be careful when we state that “We are too old for that” such way of thinking needs to be changed. I think that we must consider other view points, since it is better to set goals to life and devise strategies to achieve them than to resemble a boat on the high seas shifting along; filled the story of your life and make everyday in your life a master piece. AIRR PHANTHIP AND AJARN MONLIT

Two men and one style:

O

nce, as I was checking my facebook account I saw some photos of a young American boy who had fought in Thailand and won a Muay Thai combat; I thought it would be wonderful to bring his story to the pages of Martial Science. Shortly after, I found myself working on an article about Mr. Art Camacho who was incidentally in Las Vegas teaching a seminar; I also found it a great opportunity to take some photographs for the article on the magazine; so, I headed towards the office where the event was scheduled; to my surprise, it was a Muay Thai school, the same school where the young American boy had been trained. In this manner, I met Master Airr, Master Monlit and the other members of the Nak Muay Thai family in the U.S.A. I have practiced several martial art styles my whole life, including contact sports, such as: Kick Boxing and Full Contact; but, I had never tried Thai Boxing until I met these great Thailand masters. It was then, that I got conscious of the unique opportunity to get into the utmost world of fighters I was having. Thus, I started to practice with them, so that some time after, I could write about the experience I had on the fire of their training sessions.

...I could write about the experience I had on the fire of their training sessions. AUGUST/2014

I would like to start telling you about my Nak Muay Thai masters in the U.S.A., Master Airr, outlived the war of Viet Nam, since he escaped from Lao. In 1978, he began to earn his living as a Muay Thai fighter in a refugees’ shelter in Ubon Ratani, Thailand. By the end of the 70’s and the beginning of the 80’s he had already become a professional junior fighter who had fought in the Center and North of Thailand and in the U.S.A. Currently, master Airr holds an expertise which had expanded for more than 30 years and moves from teaching to promoting fighters. He had worked altogether with Master Toddy Gym; Lion fight Promotion, (USEACA), North Dakota Martial Art Promotion, and LV Muay Thai, Rising Start fight in Las Vegas Nevada, Members and associates with PLATINUM ENTERTAINMENT, LLC (BOXING), United South East Asia Cultural Association (USEACA) and Muay Thai Sectioning Bodies. He is the co-founder of Nak Muay Thai Gym-USA in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he teaches his lessons daily. Apart from martial arts; but worthy of mentioning is the fact that he is a kindhearted person who volunteers in several aid communities, his assistance has been given to: Boy and Girl of Nevada present, Hawaii youth Commu14

nity outreach 1992 to 2000, San Antonio Asian Community outreach 1980 to 1997, Nevada Lao & Thai Associations 2001t, Over at Lao, Thailand and Cambodia outreach since 1996 up to the present. Master Ajarn Monlit is currently 51 years old. He holds more than 90 professional fights. He started to fight when he was 12, in the North of Thailand in a small province named Korat. He used to travel by train all across the country to fight. After a year, his instructor noticed his potentialities and talents as a fighter, and he decided to move to Bangkok, the main city. Thus, he started to be promoted by the Sitpordang gym, which was regarded as one of the best gyms in Bangkok, Thailand. Then, he was 13 years old and he fought for four more years there. An unfortunate motorcycle accident injured Master Ajarn Monlit’s knee, so he was rendered unfit to continue fighting. This life turn made the owner to sell the training room and transferred all the fighters and trainers to the new proprietor , Fairtex gymnasium. Therehe had the approval of the principal instructor and became a trainer, he attended Fairtex gym for 10 years and became the youngest trainer of Muay Thai ever.

AUGUST/2014

15

In this way, and in the midst of his life’s pros and cons, he made a partneship and opened out a new gym which they named Sitsongpeenong, a year after it was a well-known reference name for Muay Thai in Bangkok, by the second year, master Monlit was given the award to the best instructor of the year in Thailand, in the year 2000. Master Ajarn Monlit is in the U.S.A. now. He is teaching seminars, lessons, and works as a Muay Thai advisor. At present, he is the co-founder of Nak Muay Thai Gym in U.S.A.

“...Master Monlit was given the award to the best instructor of the year in

Thailand,...”

The master Airr was granted the award for The Best Instructor of Muay Thai 2014, in the prestigious event Martial Arts Hall of the Fame, Hall of the Heroes. In San Diego, California, where he also imparted an extraordinary seminar

Nak Muay Thai.

17

About his training sessions, I can tell you, that he starts by the basic Muay Thai, its combat posture, the one-two of straight punches and some simple knee techniques, elbows, in shadows, etc. In the beginning it is difficult to get adapted to hand’s guard and one tends to shrink a little. Then, the punching techniques with the sacks, this work is hard; the instructors always demand to punch powerfully; about 50 circular kicks to the stomach and 50 knee punches on each side must be performed and one might finish with 3 minute fist punches to the sack. Immediately, the stick training session with master Monlit begins, each attack lasts 3 minute, but it is so hard that it seems to last 30 minute in a battlefield. Once I thought that Muay Thai was a hard art, but at present I believe it is very hard, and its training technique does 18

not differ from its fighting technique which is also very strong and demands great efforts. Finally, I am grateful to Nak Muay Thai family, in particular to Master Airr and to Master Monlit, for they gave me the chance to train with them and to make new friends. They also allowed me to share this experience with all MARTIAL SCIENCE readers. http://www.nakmuaythaigym.com/

Teachings of the Budha The Thief and the Master

O

ne evening, Zen master Shichiri Kojun was reciting sutras when a thief entered his house with a sharp sword, demanding “money or life”. Without any fear, Shichiri said, “Don’t disturb me! Help yourself with the money, it’s in that drawer”. And he resumed his recitation. The thief was startled by this unexpected reaction, but he proceeded with his business anyway. While he was helping himself with the money, the master stopped and called, “Don’t take all of it. Leave some for me to pay my taxes tomorrow”. The thief left some money behind and prepared to leave. Just before he left, the master suddenly shouted at him, “You took my money and you didn’t even thank me?! That’s not polite!”. This time, the thief was really shocked at such fearlessness. He thanked the master and ran away. The thief later told his friends that he had never been so frightened in his life. A few days later, the thief was caught and confessed, among many others, his theft at Shichiri’s house. When the master was called as a witness, he said, “No, this man did not steal anything from me. I gave him the money. He even thanked me for it.” The thief was so touched that he decided to repent. Upon his release from prison, he became a disciple of the master and many years later, he attained Enlightenment.

JOAQUÍM ALMERÍA INTERVIEW

By: Henry Binerfa Photos: Cortesy of Sifu Joaquím Almería

THE 26

Introduction Joaquín Almería was born in Pamplona, Spain, in 1970. He started to train martial arts by practicing Judo and JuJitsu, when he was eight years old. At the age of eighteen he had become a martial arts instructor and got the rank of Black Belt in such arts as: Tae Kwon Do, Kick Boxing, Full Contact, Savate, and Muay Thai. By the years 1990 and 1992 he was nominated national and international champion on the fields of TaeKwon Do and Kick Boxing. As he participated in professional competitive events in Europe, he started to study dramatic art at the Theater Institute in Barcelona. In summer time, he used to go to the U.S.A. to study under the guidance of the best martial art masters. He is proud to have studied with the Grand Masters Dan Inosanto, George Dillman, Reylson Gracie (night Dan in Gracie JiuJitsu), and such masters as: Machado brothers, and Ron Balicki, among others. Likewise, he registered as personal trainer and Bachelor in Fitness under the American Council on Exercise ACE. He started to love the American customs and culture as he used to visit the country every three month. His most illustrious master there was Dan Inosanto from IAMA (Inosanto Academy of Martial Art) in Los Angeles. Dan Inossanto was an advanced student and a personal friend of Bruce Lee. Mr. Inosanto is currently the inheritor of his art and cultivates his teachings.

To complete his studies, Joaquin studied Acupuncture, Tui Na (Chinese Massage), Fittherapy, and Traditional Chinese medicine in general. He also took a course on dramatic studies and had the chance to work with very famous artists from Spain as soon as he finished his studies and with American stars later. He choreographed fighting plays for theater and film making. By this time, he got the degree of Third Dan in Muay Thai and Second Dan in Kick Boxing, he added his Black Belt in Tai Chi Chuan/ Qi Gong to his martial repertoire. Joaquin is considered as an expert in martial arts, and constantly travels through the world teaching courses and seminars on the art of Jun Fan JeetKune Do (JKD) and Philippine’s Martial Arts (AMF). His greed toward Martial arts led him to Japan, where he continued his martial formation and his studies about Chinese medicine. Meanwhile, he learned the language and developed writing skills, so that he was able to read in “kanji”. It made possible for him to teach martial arts and prescribe acupuncture treatments to the Japanese people. He got the degree of

champion in the Japanese style of Sei Shin Kai in karate in broad contact. Joaquin is among the few masters who have taught martial arts in Japan and among those who have won this kind of tournaments. After many years in Japan, he got the Black Belt in Karate Sei Shin Kai and Aikido and he continued to work in several plays and went on with his artistic studies. Afterwards, he moved to the U.S.A. where he turned prime dancer of Adagio in the International show of Las Vegas “Splash”. Once he finished his studies within the world of entertaining, Joaquin moved to los Angeles for full time studies under Dan Inosanto’s leadership, this time, he got the degrees of instructor in the art and science of Bruce Lee (Jun Fan JeetKune Do)and Philippine’s Martial Arts (AMF). Joaquin is one of the few non-native persons who have taught lessons as instructor in his academy in Los Angeles. He was named instructor of the year by the U.S. A. Hall of Fame in the year 2000. Due to his mastery of the pressure dots and about Eastern Medicine, he is developing

a new study which is intended to unite the concepts and applications of KyushoJitsu with JKD. This study is endorsed by the Dillman Karate International (DKI), where he is associated. The project is carried out in coordination with the Shihan Evan Pantazi, one of the most prestigious authorities of this style world wide. Joaquin is a direct student of Master Ed Lake, Eighth Dan in Kyusho Jitsu. Presently, he studies Gracie JuJitsu under Reylson Gracie’s leadership (Ni Dan) and continues to learn from his master Dan Inosanto. He is a well-known instructor of JKD and Kali, and he travels around the world to promote master’s Dan Inosanto and Bruce Lees’ arts.

your actual application in the life of a martial artist who seeks to be honest with himself in

Filipino boxing against English Boxing. the study of martial arts. Differences, strengths and weaknesses. Tell us. The dialectical relationship The Filipino Boxing differs a lot from English boxing. First, because though it is called boxing, the Philippines use more weapons than just hands. For instance, in Filipino boxing, it is allowed to use the elbows to punch, sweep outs can also be performed to unbalance the opponent and create and opening in his guard. Likewise, they use the technology of the pressure dots and try to attack the nerves and sensitive areas of the body. Definitely, The Filipino Boxing is less restrictive than the English Boxing in relation to regulations; it turns it a great weapon for genuine personal self-defense.

You can tell that similarities exist in JKD and Filipino Martial Arts JKD and the Philippine’s arts share many similarities, thus they have been tied for a long time. The truth is that they both emphasize on rival catches outdistance, and the concept of flowing in all distances embracing usefulness without caring about the traditions.

between accumulation and removal is very easy. To eliminate you first need to accumulate, none one could be a genius on physics without studying physics previously. To develop any activity we first need to accumulate knowledge, experience and technique. Then, it would be possible to introduce our criteria, our unique personality and our intelligence to start to eliminate what is unworthy to our lives. But, if one stars to eliminate before mastering the technique, then, he is misleading himself. If you don´t know how to perform a technique, it does not mean that you have obviate it for it does not work, you can not blame the technique! It is your entire fault. But you need to be honest.

My martial arts partnership is acknowledged by the Olympic Committee and the General Council of Exercise. It is the first one to unite Kyusho / dim mak, withJeetKuneDo. Naturally, the qigong, kyusho, dim mak and acupuncture are applied in my personal teaching program. I should point out that I am faithful to Bruce Lee, and when I show his JKD, I do it the way he did it, without adding anything to it. When I perform kali, I do it like Master Inosanto without changing anything. But, in our academy, there is a lesson where I teach my students how to mix all the techniques at the same time either for self-defense or for MMA; the outcome is a more complete system.

not the same to know how to punch than where to punch. It is very useful to know how the body works and its energy level, to make your art look superior. All AAMM masters throughout history have devoted time to get to know how to manage the human body’s most vulnerable parts. It is evident that Bruce Lee also started to do it, but he did not have enough time to do it since he died too young.

Anything

else you want to share with us?

Here by, there is an invitation to all those interested on learning about Bruce Lee to keep in contact with me at: www.beyondjkd. us/joomla. Thank you very much, Sifu Almeria, on behalf of Martial Science Magazine and grateful for your time.

WHAT IS IP MAN WING CHUN? First of all Ip Man Wing Chun is a Martial Art, a combat art not a sport. Many Martial Arts have evolved in becoming sports for entertainment and to fight in contests. There’s nothing wrong with that but Wing Chun did not evolve into a sport. It stayed a very compact self-defense system. It is indeed a system, a system with concepts. Like you have kata’s in Karate, Wing Chun also has forms. In these forms you learn the techniques, the positions, the structure, develop energy, develop power and learn how to put it all together. Grandmaster Ip Man is responsible for further developing the system into what we call now the Ip Man Wing Chun. If it weren’t for GM Ip Man, Wing Chun would not be known in the Western world and probably not even in Hong Kong and many parts of China. It is thanks to his teachings in Foshan, China and especially Hong Kong that the students who he taught were able to spread Wing Chun all over the world. We owe him everything because without him Wing Chun would not have become one of the most popular Martial Art systems in the world. Of course it helped a lot that one of his students became very famous and was initially responsible for Wing Chun to become known to the general public. It also has been through the teaching of today’s masters like GM Ip Man’s sons, Ip Chun and Ip Ching, that we have the full knowledge of this system.

“There’s nothing wrong with that but Wing Chun did not evolve into a sport. It stayed a very compact self-defense system”.

This is why we always need to remember this great man, none of all the practitioners over the world (except small parts of China) would have known about Wing Chun. “AUTHENTIC” WING CHUN In the Wing Chun world there’s a lot of talk going on about the authenticity of Wing Chun. A useless discussion. The origin of Wing Chun cannot be verified. There are legends and oral stories passed on that cannot be verified. The one thing that can be said that GM Ip Man did not do well is that he underestimated the fact that people would be able to make a lot of money with Wing Chun. And so Wing Chun has become big business with all the negative influence coming from that. He passed on his knowledge to only a few students. At the end of his life he realized that he needed to rectify this to preserve the system he was teaching. That is why he filmed the famous 8mm video. Unfortunately he was already too ill to film everything.

Wing Chun has evolved into a very effective combat system and there just is no authentic Wing Chun. But there is authentic Ip Man Wing Chun. GM Ip Man was a very intelligent man that improved the system. Fortunately we have this knowledge thanks to his 2 sons so the system can stay alive. We see many different types of Wing Chun and many of these are created because of lack of this knowledge. If you want to know if your Wing Chun is really from GM Ip Man than look at the 8mm video and compare. There can be slight differences but it should be more or less the same. If it’s not … you can draw your own conclusion. WING CHUN THEORY Ip Man Wing Chun is a system because it uses principles, concepts that are the foundation of the Martial Art. You can practice till your arms and legs fall of but if you don’t understand and apply the principles your Wing Chun will be not good. CENTER LINE The centerline we talk about is the imaginary verAUGUST/2014 JUNIO/2014

tical line in the middle of your body. In the system the protection of your own and the attack of your opponent’s centerline is the goal. This is obvious as most of the vital areas of your body lie in or near this centerline. FACING An opponent is always faced squarely, this gives the Wing Chun the capability of attacking and defending with both arms and legs without having to make a move first. This makes it a very flexible system. AREAS In the Ip Man Wing Chun system the body is divided in different gates, zones, areas. Understanding these principles makes it possible to apply different attacks and defenses.

GM. Samuel Kwok by imparting a seminar at the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame in Newport Beach, California. 2013

The vertical straight Wing Chun punch, the stances, the stepping, the chain punching are also to be considered as essential elements of the Wing Chun system. This short introduction is not complete but only to give you an idea why Ip Man Wing Chun is a system and not just a Martial Art. WING CHUN TODAY Wing Chun has become one of the most popular Martial Arts in the world. It is our obligation to preserve the heritage of GM Ip Man. A system can only exist if the principles of the system are applied. As in any system if you do not know all the principles the system will fail or have flaws. The proof is in the eating of the pudding, it either works or it doesn’t it is as simple as that. Wing Chun is an easy to learn system for self-defense, a combat art that can be used by anybody old or young, woman or man.

A Travelling Ronin

Kali

By: Martin “Travelling Ronin” Fransham

BACKGROUND: I have loved fighting with weapons for as long as I can remember. However, most of my introduction to weapons had come in the form of Medieval Martial Arts and Chinese Martial Arts. I had almost no experience with Filipino Martial Arts. Sure I had heard of Kali but other that knowing they did “stick fighting” I couldn’t have told you much about it.

What I have always found extremely interesting is how cultures adopt from each other. During the colonial era Spain influenced the Philippines enormously. The sea-faring nations exported their cultures around the globe bringing various ideologies and technologies with them. Today, the situation is reversed. Kali is being exported around the world and has become a part of the Martial Arts of several militaries.

Paul Ingram charging forward to slash me to ribbons.

Kali has many other names and you will sometimes hear of it referred to as Arnis or Escrima due to the Spanish influence in the Philippines. Like all of the Martial Arts I visit I was surprised by how rich and diverse the culture of fighting goes in Kali. This was anything but mere “stick fighting.” Filipino Martial Arts are as different and incredible as any of the Chinese Martial Arts I have studied. 40

We started warming up with a basic pattern to develop timing.

Pekiti-Tirsia Kali is one of main systems of Kali and was officially created by the Tortal Family in 1897. The current head of the system is Grand Tuhon Leo Gage Jr. who has been extremely devoted to growing this system of Kali. Beneath him gent-

lemen like Tuhon Tim Waid have been teaching the Filipino Marines and giving seminars around the world. Paul Ingram was one of the people that got hooked on Tim Waid’s teachings and has dedicated himself to PTK. Paul is quite short and sought to level the field between him and larger fighters. When confronted with kickboxing or grappling he found they favoured a larger fighter. Indeed, the UFC will never place Demetrious Johnson against Jon Jones. Weapons provided that equalizer he was looking for. Suddenly speed killed and every strike was devastating. PTK turned a smaller fighter into a human weapon.

Tom takes my wrist.

WHAT I LEARNED: Pekiti-Tirsia Kali is described as a system not an art which I found very interesting. Paul stressed several times throughout the evening that a system is what you use and an art is what you create. The example that stuck with me the most was that of a painter. A painter / artist will use a system to create the piece they are working on. A baroque painter and a modern painter will both create “art” based on how they approach the canvas yet the result will be radically different. The same is true with Pekiti-Tirsia Kali. Students are encouraged to learn the system and then create their own expression of the art. Larger fighters,

Paul and Tom working at full speed.

like myself, might hit harder and stronger whereas a smaller fighter becomes fluid and flows faster. It was this incredible dynamic of structure mixed with self-expression that I really enjoyed from RFA Martial Academy. The name stands for “Require Further Achievement” and is designed to push you and to not except limits. The limitations we face are largely self-imposed and RFA Martial Academy asks you to always continue learning and growing. There is no end just simply a new challenge to look at and conquer. Paul Ingram lives the philosophy that you should never stop growing and improving. WHAT WAS SIMILAR: RFA Martial Academy matches some of the top schools I have been to because of their openness to questions. Paul is a believer that you should challenge and push your teacher. The strength of any system, whether it is Kali or another Martial Art, is its ability to withstand questioning. If your style and primarily your teacher cannot accept being pushed to answer hard questions then perhaps there is a fundamental flaw in what you are learning. AUGUST/2014

demy showed me that Kali is way more advanced then I had ever imagined. I can't wait to see more of it. Best regards and keep training, Martin "Travelling Ronin" Fransham

Tom slashes my face. He stopped with perfect precision.

Teachers need to be open and welcoming with their students’ questions. It is something that my first teacher, Sifu John Hum, strove to install in me. When I took up grappling, Coach Eugene Shewchuk, was always there and answering questions. As an instructor your students should be helping you grow and making you a better teacher. CONCLUSION: A big reason I try to train with new groups and new people all the time is because it helps pull back the veil of ignorance and helps me grow as a Martial Artist. RFA Martial Aca-

In the previous publication of Martial Science the physical capacity of flexibility was introduced, and we provided a guide to start with exercises to develop flexibility. On the present publication, we will continue showing a set of new exercises towards the development of this important capacity within martial arts. Let’s start the exercise with the feet open to the extend of the shoulders (see photo-1), let’s take our right ankle and hook the trunk forward trying to take our chest to the leg, then, we will do it to the center (see photo 2), and the left leg (see photo 3) later, open the legs a litter more a do the same action in the three directions (see photos-4, 5 and 6)

5

6

It is important to note that we should never bend our knees. They can be executed of 15 to 25 repetitions.
