El martes por la tarde, después del Registro, fue celebrado el Cóctel de Bienvenida más concurrido del Festival Procigar. La amena fiesta, fue celebrada en el área de piscina del Hotel Garden Court, de la Cadena Hodelpa, amenizada por la
joven cantautora dominicana Nicole Santiago. Este fue un encuentro informal, pero emotivo, en el que los presentes compartieron sus cigarros favoritos e iniciaron el reencuentro con viejos amigos, conociendo también nuevas personas que llegaron este año a vivir la emoción del Festival.

After Registration, on Tuesday evening, the wellattended Welcome Cocktail event of the Procigar Festival was held. The entertaining party was held in the pool area of the Garden Court Hotel, of the Hodelpa Chain, enlivened by the
young Dominican singersongwriter Nicole Santiago. This was an informal, but emotional meeting, in which those present shared their favorite cigars and began the meeting with old friends, also meeting new people who came this year to experience the excitement of the Festival.

Los días miércoles y jueves, La Aurora recibió a sus invitados en sus instalaciones de Tamboril, para realizar un recorrido por la fábrica de cigarros más antigua del país. Eugenio Polanco, quien tiene 32 años en la empresa, fue el encargado de guiar la visita por las diferentes áreas de la fábrica. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, La Aurora received its guests at its Tamboril facilities, to take a tour through the oldest cigar factory in the country. Eugenio Polanco, who has been with the company for 32 years, was in charge of guiding the tour through the different factory areas.

HUELLA Y MEMORIA // FOOTPRINT AND MEMORY Terminado el recorrido por la fábrica de cigarros La Aurora, los visitantes fueron trasladados al Centro León, un museo y centro cultural sin fines de lucro, inaugurado en ocasión del centenario de la fundación de La Aurora. Una vez allí, visitamos
la exposición permanente “Huella y Memoria”, dedicada a los orígenes de la familia León Asensio y sus emprendimientos industriales. Para llegar hasta esta exposición, debemos pasar frente al Aviario Fernando León Asensio, quien fue un amante de la naturaleza y protector del medioambiente. Luego, se accede a la segunda planta del edificio réplica de La Aurora, primera empresa de la familia fundada en 1903, donde se realizó un recorrido por la
exposición, pudiéndose observar un resumen de la vida de la familia, por más de cien años de desenvolvimiento, que incidieron en la vida de la República Dominicana, a través de fotografías de las figuras protagónicas, objetos de remembranzas y muchos elementos documentales. After the tour through La Aurora cigar factory, visitors were transferred to the León Center, a non-profit museum and cultural center, inaugurated on the occasion of La Aurora founding centenary. Once there, we visited the permanent exhibition “Huella y Memoria”, dedicated to the León Asensio family origins and its industrial undertakings. To get to this exhibition, we must pass in front of the Fernando León Asensio Aviary, who was a nature lover and environment protector. Then, at the second floor of La Aurora replica building, the first company of the family founded in 1903, the group made a tour to the exhibition, being able to observe a summary of the family life, for more than one hundred years of
development, which certainly marked the Dominican Republic history, through photographs of the leading figures, objects of remembrance and many documentary elements.

Los expertos en los procesos de José Méndez & Co explicaron a los visitantes todos los pasos que se llevan a cabo para lograr una materia prima de calidad, desde la siembra, recolección, el curado, selección, despalille, y otros procesos que la empresa le da a la hoja, hasta empacarla para enviarla a Tabacalera de García, en la ciudad de La Romana, donde se hacen los cigarros premium.
The José Méndez & Co processes experts, explained to the visitors all the steps that are carried out to obtain a quality raw material, from planting, harvesting, curing, selection, sorting and steaming tobacco, and other processes that the company make to the leaf, until packing it to send it to Tabacalera de García, in La Romana city, where premium cigars are made.

Both companies organized a trip to one of the José Méndez’s tobacco farms which is located at La Canela Municipality, in Santiago; tour that was very enriching, given the magnificent explanations of his vice president, Siegfried Maruschke, and his expert team of agronomists.

Siegfried Maruschke Méndez, vicepresidente de la empresa de cultivo y procesadora de tabacos José Méndez& Co, es también el director tabaco de la empresa. Pertenece a la 5ta generación de cultivadores de hojas de tabaco, tradición que inició con su tatarabuelo Santiago Ramos, en Cuba y que continuó en República Dominicana, en el año 1962, cuando su abuelo, Pepe Méndez, llegó al país. Durante todos estos años, sus padres Mercedes Méndez y Siegfried Maruschke, también han estado al frente del negocio.
Siegfried Maruschke Méndez, vice president of José Méndez & Co, the tobacco growing and processing company, is also the company›s tobacco director. He belongs to the 5th generation of tobacco leaf growers, a tradition that began with his great-great-grandfather, Santiago Ramos, in Cuba and that continued in the Dominican Republic in 1962, when his grandfather, Pepe Méndez, arrived to the country. During all these years, his parents, Mercedes Méndez and Siegfried Maruschke, have also been in charge of the business.

La Asociación de Productores de Cigarros de la República Dominicana –PROCIGAR- ofreció formal bienvenida a los asistentes a la nueva versión del Festival Procigar 2022, durante una cena realizada en el Parque Central de Santiago, pulmón verde de la ciudad. Una amplia delegación de invitados nacionales e internacionales, entre ellos productores y consumidores, acudieron nueva vez a la tradicional cita con lo mejor de la robustecida industria del tabaco. Hendrik Kelner, presidente de PROCIGAR, al ofrecer las palabras centrales, expresó el regocijo de volver a celebrar este evento justo en el 30 aniversario de la creación de la asociación que une a los más grandes productores de cigarros del país. Además, destacó la fortaleza de la industria del tabaco, los aportes que hace al enriquecimiento de la cultura y el impacto que genera en la economía nacional, ya que su objetivo es lograr que quienes asistan se conviertan en embajadores de buena voluntad del país. Kelner resaltó también el gran valor que ha tenido el tabaco en la historia dominicana, por la permanencia que ha mostrado desde los orígenes de la isla y que aún prevalece en nuestros días.

La noche transcurrió con un animado programa de actividades, como los bailarines de carnaval, la actuación musical de Pororó, la música bailable del Grupo de Mitch López, y el tradicional concurso de baile, al tiempo que los invitados disfrutaban de un buen cigarro dominicano. En cada Festival, se lleva a cabo un concurso de baile con diferentes ritmos tropicales, que para muchos es el momento más emocionante de la fiesta. Este año, solo se bailó al ritmo de bachata y los ganadores fueron una pareja compuesta por dominicana – puertorriqueño. In each Festival, a dance contest with different tropical rhythms is held, which for many is the most exciting moment of the party. This year, participants only danced by the rhythm of bachata and the winners were a Dominican-Puerto Rican couple.

The Association of Dominican Cigar Manufacturers -PROCIGAR- offered a formal welcome to those attending the new version of the 2022 Procigar Festival, with a dinner held in the Central Park of Santiago, the green lung of the city. A large delegation of national and international guests, including producers and consumers, once again attended the traditional appointment with the best of the robust tobacco industry. Hendrik Kelner, PROCIGAR president, in offering the main words, expressed the joy of celebrating this event again just on the 30th anniversary of the association creation that unites the largest cigar producers in the country. In addition, he highlighted the strength of the tobacco industry, the contributions it makes to the enrichment of culture and the impact it generates on the national economy, since its objective is to make those who attend the festival become ambassadors of goodwill for the country. Kelner also highlighted the great value that tobacco has had in Dominican history, due to the permanence it has shown since the island’s origins and that still prevails today.

Blanco, junto a su equipo, y recorrieron las instalaciones, conociendo todos los pasos para la elaboración de los exquisitos cigarros que Tabacalera Palma produce para sus propias líneas y para líneas privadas.

On the hand of José Manuel Blanco, 5th. Generation Tobacco Grower and 3rd. Generation in Cigar Maker, the 2022 Procigar Festival participants enrolled in the guided tour to Tabacalera Palma, enjoyed an amazing day, getting to know one of the company’s tobacco farms, in the community of Jacagua. Visitors listened carefully to the experienced explanations that José Manuel and his team offered them about the entire tobacco process, like preparing the land, the selection of the seeds, planting in trays, transplanting to the ground… in short, all the steps until the leaves are ready to be transferred to the factory, in the Municipality of Tamboril. PDR Cigars fue la última fábrica en unirse como socio a la Asociación de Productores de Cigarros de la República Dominicana –PROCIGAR-. Está ubicada en Tamboril, la cuna del cigarro, y para recibir a los visitantes del Festival, su propietario Abraham Flores, les hizo una visita guiada por las instalaciones de la fábrica de cigarros, ofreciendo las explicaciones de todos los procesos y respondiendo a las interesantes preguntas que iban formulando los participantes, durante el recorrido. Tras la visita a todas las áreas de la fábrica, Abraham ofreció un seminario sobre hojas de tabaco y los asistentes, pudieron hacer sus propias ligas, combinando las diferentes hojas. La visita a la fábrica finalizó con un delicioso almuerzo con comida muy típica de República Dominicana y tradicionales dulces.

PDR Cigars was the last factory to join the Association of Dominican Cigar Manufacturers –PROCIGAR- as a member. It’s located in Tamboril, the cigar cradle, and to welcome the Festival visitors, its owner, Abraham -Abe- Flores, gave them a guided tour to the premium cigar factory facilities, providing them explanations of all the processes and answering their interesting questions, during the tour. After the visit to all the factory areas, Abraham offered a seminar about tobacco leaves and attendees were able to make their own blends, combining the different tobacco leaves. The visit to the factory ended with a delicious lunch with very typical food from the Dominican Republic and traditional sweets.

Continuando con la SAGA, Nirka Reyes, 5ta generación de tabaqueros, condujo la visita por la finca y por la fábrica de cigarros De Los Reyes Cigars, ubicada en Licey, Santiago. Para De Los Reyes Cigars, la artesanía del tabaco siempre ha sido una tradición familiar, heredada generación tras generación; capaz de cosechar la tierra con toda la atención que requiere el cultivo. Fruto de este trabajo, en el año 1995 nace la fábrica de puros, produciendo reconocidas líneas propias y fabricando para terceros. Continuing with the SAGA, Nirka Reyes, a 5th generation cigar maker, led the tour to the field and to De Los Reyes Cigars cigar factory, located in Licey, Santiago. To De Los Reyes Cigars, the tobacco handcraft has always been a family tradition, inherited generation after generation; able to harvest the land with all the attention that the crop requires. As a result of this work, in the year 1995 the cigar factory was born, producing their own lines and manufacturing for private labels.

Esta visita tenía dos destinos. El miércoles, los participantes podría elegir viajar a la ciudad de Bonao, para conocer el Chateau de la Fuente & el Cigar Family Charitable Foundation. Y el jueves, se podían inscribir en la visita a la fábrica de cigarros A. Fuente, ubicada en la primera etapa del parque industrial Víctor Mera Espaillat, de la ciudad de Santiago. Chateau de la Fuente, “Lugar de nacimiento de un sueño”, está ubicado en el pueblo de Caribe, y es el hogar de la plantación de tabaco de la Familia Fuente. Allí, la familia estableció la República Dominicana como un lugar de cultivo de capa de cigarros premium. Carlito Fuente pasaba mucho tiempo allí, y fue testigo de las dificultades que experimentaban los que vivían en Caribe. Sin mucho acceso a la educación, escasez de alimentos e incluso ninguna fuente de agua potable segura, lo que le inspiró a fundar “Cigar Family Charitable Foundation” junto a la Familia Newman, en 2001. Hoy en día, la escuela comunitaria The Cigar Family brinda educación gratuita a más de 500 niños, desde prekínder hasta el duodécimo grado, así como apoyo continuo en la universidad. Junto a la ayuda de aficionados y minoristas de todo el mundo, Cigar Family continúa con su misión de mejorar el bienestar de los niños en República Dominicana... Cambiando el mundo, un niño a la vez.

This visit had two destinations. On Wednesday, participants could choose to travel to Bonao city, to see the Chateau de la Fuente & the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation. And on Thursday, they could sign up for a visit to Tabacalera A. Fuente cigar factory, located in the first phase of the Víctor Mera Espaillat industrial park, in Santiago city. Chateau de la Fuente, “Birthplace of a Dream”, is located in the village of Caribe, and is the home of the Fuente Family’s world-renown tobacco plantation. There, the family established the Dominican Republic as a premium cigar wrapper growing location. Carlito Fuente spent a lot of time there, and he witnessed the hardships that those living in Caribe experienced. Without much access to education, a scarcity of food, and even no safe drinkable water source, which inspired him to found the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation with the Newman Family in 2001. today, The Cigar Family community school provides free education to over 500 children, from pre-k to twelfth grade, as well as continued support throughout college and university. Along with the help of aficionados and retailers worldwide, Cigar Family is continuing its mission to improve the welfare of children in the Dominican Republic and worldwide… Changing the world, one child at a time.

Tabacalera La Flor, abrió sus puertas en el año 1994, produciendo sus primeros cigarros un año más tarde; honrando su nombre, lanzaron un tradicional puro dominicano, con capa Connecticut shade, tripa y capote dominicanos. La empresa se ha expandido a lo largo de los años y sigue siendo el hogar de todas nuestras operaciones de fabricación. La creatividad y la innovación florecen en LFD; comenzó con El Jocko y continuó con Mysterio, Digger y Chisel, la única forma de cigarro que tiene una patente. En este Festival Procigar 2022, realizaron dos visitas guiadas a su finca de tabaco, en el municipio de La Canela, trasladándose luego al Municipio de Tamboril, para presentar su fábrica a los visitantes, y tener allí un suculento almuerzo.

Tabacalera La Flor, opened its doors in 1994, producing its first cigars a year later; Honoring his name, they launched a traditional Dominican cigar, with a Connecticut shade wrapper, Dominican filler and binder. La familia Quesada ha sido parte de la industria tabacalera por más de un siglo. Fue a finales de 1800 cuando comenzaron su negocio de tabaco cuando se pagó una deuda familiar con tabaco. En junio de 1974 establecieron la empresa en una nueva zona de libre comercio en Santiago, República Dominicana. Hoy, la quinta generación de la Familia Quesada dirige la planta de fabricación con más de 300 personas que mantienen la tradición de hacer cigarros premium. Este 2022, Don Manolo Quesada condujo la visita guiada de Procigar a sus instalaciones, ubicadas en Licey, Santiago, junto a su hija, Raquel Quesada. Tras el recorrido por la fábrica, realizaron un maridaje de puros con ron Brugal, magistralmente dirigido por Susana Ortega Brugal, embajadora de la marca y 5ª generación de Familia Brugal.

The Quesada family has been a part of the tobacco industry for over a century. It was in the late 1800s that they began their tobacco business when a debt to the family was paid with tobacco. in June 1974, they established the company in a new free trade zone in Santiago,
Dominican Republic. Today, the fifth generation of the Quesada Family runs the manufacturing facility with over 300 people keeping the tradition of making premium cigars. This 2022, Don Manolo Quesada conducted the Procigar guided tour to their facilities
in Licey, Santiago, together with his daughter, Raquel Quesada. After the factory tour, they made a cigar pairing with Brugal rum, masterfully led by Susana Ortega Brugal, brand ambassador and 5th generation of Brugal Family.

The traditional White Night of the Procigar 2022 Festival, which is being held for the fourteenth time by the Association of Dominican Cigar Manufacturers, was held at the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration, with the presence of the Dominican Vice President, Raquel Peña. En esta ocasión, el lugar escogido fue la finca de tabaco de La Aurora, ubicada en Jacagua, Santiago, donde los invitados y sus anfitriones pudieron estrechar lazos de amistad entre magníficos cigarros, abundante comida, exquisita bebida, juegos y buena música.

El Museo del Ámbar fue fundado en el 1982. Desde los primeros contactos de colonizadores con nativos taínos de la isla, el ámbar ha sido un elemento precioso para los españoles y subsecuentes visitantes de la isla. El ámbar que se encuentra en la República Dominicana es considerado el más valioso del mundo, por ser el más transparente, por su abundancia de insectos fósiles y por la diversidad de sus colores. La incomparable Experiencia del Ámbar Dominicano guarda cientos de misterios y maravillas de hace aproximadamente 60 millones de años. Además de exhibir fósiles, rinde homenaje a la historia de esta piedra semipreciosa y las obras magníficas de los artesanos que la han usado para la elaboración de joyas.
Luego de este maravilloso recorrido en la Experiencia del Ámbar y el showroom de la Experiencia del Tabaco, contamos con las instalaciones de una tienda con gran variedad de souvenirs, piezas únicas elaboradas por nuestros artesanos, así como una diversidad de productos que te invitan a disfrutar de buenos humos y maridajes perfectos. La Experiencia del Museo del Ámbar se encuentra ubicada en Villa Bentz. Esta casa, de estilo victoriano y conocida como patrimonio nacional, fue diseñada en el año 1918 por su propietario Augusto Bentz, empresario azucarero de los ingenios más grandes de la costa norte. Por motivos de la caída del precio del azúcar, la familia Bentz se vió obligada a abandonar la villa en el año 1929. En el año 1977 esta hermosa villa fue adquirida y remodelada por la familia italiana Costa, recuperando su antiguo encanto con la idea de establecer en ella un museo, sueño que se hizo realidad en el año 1982 cuando se fundó el Museo del Ámbar.
Dentro de esta experiencia, también se rinde homenaje al arduo trabajo de los mineros que con esfuerzo y dedicación se exponen a condiciones difíciles y un riesgo permanente, responsabilidad social con la que estamos trabajando como identidad. En el Museo del Ámbar encontrarás además, como una atracción diferente y enriquecedora, la Experiencia del Tabaco. Un showroom de concepto único, cuyo objetivo es invitarnos a conocer La Aurora: Compañía tabaquera más antigua de la República Dominicana, líder en el mercado dominicano y con presencia en más de 80 países. Se trata de un recorrido de la historia del tabaco donde se descubren los procesos para la elaboración de un cigarro, desde la preparación de la tierra y selección de la semilla hasta la elaboración del más prestigioso producto que se conjuga con la historia y tradición del tabaco dominicano.

To end the daily tours, Friday was a day dedicated to share among all the Festival participants and the Members of the Association, in a morning full of joy and fun. On this occasion, the chosen place was La Aurora’s tobacco field, located in Jacagua, Santiago, where the guests and their hosts were able to strengthen ties of friendship between magnificent cigars, abundant food, exquisite drinks, games and good music.

Con Michael Herklots y Manuel Quesada como anfitriones, la tradicional subasta se llevó a cabo en el Centro Español de Santiago, con artículos únicos de los Miembros de Procigar, que recaudaron US$350,000.00 a beneficio del Voluntariado Jesús con los Niños (una organización sin fines de lucro para niños enfermos), la Sociedad San Vicente de Paúl (asilo de ancianos de escasos recursos) y la iniciativa benéfica de Procigar “Un Hogar para mi Familia”, un programa de vivienda que tiene como objetivo ayudar a los empleados más desfavorecidos, pero merecedores, de las fábricas de Procigar. Los ganadores son seleccionados entre familias de escasos recursos, que tienen hijos o ancianos en su hogar, con antecedentes basados en el mérito, la necesidad y los años trabajados en sus respectivas fábricas. Junto con la colaboración de Espejo Constructora y la ayuda de los asistentes al Festival, Procigar quiere cambiar sus vidas brindándoles estabilidad y una sensación de bienestar que ofrece la invaluable seguridad de un nuevo hogar digno y seguro. Esta vez, el beneficiario fue Víctor Ferrer Martínez, de la empresa Tabadom Holding, quien trabaja para esta tabacalera desde hace 18 años.

Hosted by Michael Herklots and Manuel Quesada, the traditional auction took place at Centro Español de Santiago, with unique items from the Procigar Members, which raised US$350,000.00 benefiting Voluntariado Jesús con los Niños (a non-profit organization for ill children), Sociedad San Vicente de Paúl (senior retirement home for low-income elders) and Procigar’s charitable initiative “A Home for My Family”, a housing program that aims to help the most disadvantaged yet deserving employees of Procigar factories. The winners were selected among low-income families, that have children or elders in their household, with a precedent based on merit, need, and years worked at their respective factories. Together, with the collaboration of Espejo Constructora, a well-known building company located in Santiago, and the help of the Festival attendees, Procigar wants to change their lives by providing stability and a sense of well-being by providing the invaluable security of a decent and safe new home. This time, the beneficiary was Víctor Ferrer Martínez, from the Tabadom Holding company, who has been working for this tobacco company for 18 years.

El festival que convierte esta ciudad en la capital mundial del tabaco, retomado después de la pausa obligada del año anterior, contó con la presencia de más de 450 invitados de más de 20 países del mundo, donde el tabaco dominicano es apreciado. Los asistentes, incluidos proveedores, minoristas, consumidores y socios de la industria, se reunieron para celebrar el orgullo y la pasión de los cigarros dominicanos. En esta noche, los invitados fueron recibidos con una caja de cigarros especial, fabricada por Vrijdag Premium Printing. Al pronunciar las palabras de clausura, Hendrik Kelner, en nombre de todos los socios de la
asociación que preside, reiteró el compromiso de trabajar para el país, promover y fortalecer la cultura del tabaco con el trabajo diario y con grandes eventos nacionales como el Festival Procigar, considerado el mejor espectáculo de tabaco y cigarros del mundo. Durante las palabras oficiales, Nirka Reyes, en nombre de todos los socios de la Asociación, entregó un hermoso ramo de flores a Oriana Veloso, en agradecimiento por todos estos años a cargo del Festival; mientras Catherine Llibre decía unas palabras de agradecimiento, resaltando el sello personal que Oriana pone en cada evento, para que el Festival se supere año tras año.

EL MINISTRO DE INDUSTRIA Y COMERCIO DE REPÚBLICA DOMINICANA,
Víctor -Ito- Bisonó, dio un interesante discurso, celebrando lo que nos une, el tabaco y el cigarro dominicano. Expresó: “Hablar del tabaco dominicano es hablar de cultura, tradición, empleo, crecimiento económico y social. Estas razones nos comprometen en este espacio que hoy compartimos en el corazón de Santiago, a continuar defendiendo al tabaco, a nuestros tabaqueros y a todo el encadenamiento productivo que este genera en nuestra economía”. The Minister of Industry and Commerce of the Dominican Republic, Víctor -Ito- Bisonó, gave an interesting speech, celebrating what unites us, tobacco and the Dominican cigar. He expressed: “To talk about Dominican tobacco is to talk about culture, tradition, employment, economic and social growth. These reasons commit us, in this space that we share today in the heart of Santiago, to continue defending tobacco, our tobacco growers and the entire productive chain that it generates in our economy.”

The festival that turns Santiago city into the world capital of tobacco, resumed after the obligatory break of the previous year, was attended by more than 450 guests from more than 20 countries, where Dominican tobacco is appreciated. Attendees, including suppliers, retailers, consumers and industry partners, gathered to celebrate the pride and passion of Dominican Cigars. On this night, the guests were welcomed with a special cigar box, manufactured by Vrijdag Premium Printing. In his closing statement, Hendrik Kelner, on behalf of all the association members that he chairs, reiterated
the commitment to work for the country, promote and strengthen the tobacco culture with daily work and with major national events such as the Festival Procigar, considered the best tobacco and cigar show in the world. During the official words, Nirka Reyes, on behalf of all the Association partners, delivered a beautiful bouquet of flowers to Oriana Veloso, in gratitude for all these years that she has in charge of the Festival; while Catherine Llibre said a words of thanks, highlighting the personal stamp that Oriana puts on each event, so that the Festival improves year after year.
