New Faces in Familiar Places During the summer of 2020 we had several businesses relocate within Madeira including the renaming of Designs By Dawson as The Cottage Paperie. Despite its new name, The Cottage continues to be a destination for personalized stationery and announcements, and now includes an expanded selection of gifts. Musique Madeira and Cultural Arts Centre joined the downtown area at the corner of Miami and Camargo, providing a beautiful place for music lessons and highlighting the talented musicians in our area. Honey on Miami joined the boutique clothing scene in the heart of downtown with its wonderful selection of women’s clothing, accessories, and more!

New Places With New Faces We are especially excited about all of the new businesses that have joined our great community. Purpose Pilates is quickly approaching the one year anniversary of opening their beautiful studio on Miami and is a great place to train your mind, body, and spirit. Meanwhile, Madeira’s food scene continues to improve with the most anticipated restaurant opening in history—Swing Line on Railroad Avenue—set to open in the fall and the return of fresh meat and seafood made available at Redden’s on the corner of Miami and Railroad. Both establishments provide a welcome addition to the downtown area! Our service sector continues to grow as well, with the law firm of Keller, Barret & Higgins recently locating to the iconic traction car building on Miami. Later this year, we’ll also welcome Clinique en Beaute to the Madeira community, transforming the former PNC building into a medical spa with a full suite of aesthetics, beauty, and wellness services. These new places and new faces are welcome additions to our wonderful and eclectic mix, which includes established businesses such as Hoppin’ Vines, now entering their third year in business, Ferrari’s Little Italy, celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, and one of Madeira’s oldest businesses, Madeira Optical, closing in on 70 years of service to our community. Take a glimpse into the past at the Madeira Historical Society. Located inside a Sears catalogue home, the society draws visitors from around the world with tours of its early 20th-century house, which displays everything from a 1950s television set to an old-fashioned sewing machine. Just 1,500 feet away shines another village gem: railroad tracks previously operated by the Marietta & Cincinnati Rail Road Company, whose former treasurer, John Madeira, is the town’s namesake. —B.H.

What’s New in Maderia
Sidewalk Talk To support Madeira’s flourishing business district, the city is making plans to redesign Miami Avenue to provide a safer and more inviting street for both vehicles and pedestrians. “We are currently working on a funding plan to widen sidewalks, provide dedicated turn lanes at the intersections, and [create] safer pedestrian crossings,” says City Manager Tom Moeller. The project will take place between Camargo Road and Euclid Avenue and construction may begin as early as 2022. —D.M.

adeira is known for its expansive, ever-growing assortment of shops and restaurants, with new and reinvented small businesses to explore all across the city. Especially vibrant is the bustling Central Business District, which offers convenient, walkable shopping spread along Miami, Euclid, and Laurel Avenues. Today, there are over 150 retail and service businesses in Madeira’s downtown—and that number is still growing. One of the city’s newest retail businesses is Redden Fine Meats & Seafood, which has made its home in Madeira’s historic railroad depot. The shop opened its doors in the spring and aspires to be a onestop shop for top-quality meats and seafood, local produce, and specialty grocery items. Also coming soon to Madeira is Swing Line, a new restaurant that will feature American fare similar to offerings at its popular sister restaurants, Paxton’s Grill and Ramsey’s Trailside,
in Loveland. Construction is set to begin soon and the owners plan to open by fall of 2021. Purpose Pilates, which opened its doors in the spring of 2020, fuses a combination of fitness, philanthropy, and learning into its practice. The studio also features exceptional Pilates equipment, including reformers, chairs, and springboards. Along with new businesses emerging on Madeira’s horizon, there are also familiar Madeira establishments that have reinvented themselves. Nelle V. Hosbrook, a nature lover and descendant of one of Madeira’s first settlers, willed the property to the city in 1975 so it could be turned into a bird sanctuary.

Located off Dawson Road, this is Madeira’s largest cityrun park. The 17-acre space contains sports amenities like baseball and soccer fields, tennis courts, and plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation with a picnic shelter, playground equipment, and wooded areas. The city recently received a grant that will be used to purchase playground equipment for the park in 2023.

his fall, Madeira City Schools celebrates nearly 100 years of putting quality education at the forefront with a unique mix of highly qualified faculty and staff, parent involvement, and an active community supporting students as they reach their full potential, both in and out of the classroom. Over the years, the district has ranked among the top in both the state and the nation in academic performance.
