WELCOME! Welcome to IJBC 2020! We are so excited to have you participating in our first online International Junior Branch Conference. Usually IJBC is held in one of the three regions, but this year because of our current circumstances, it will be held entirely online. Having a virtual IJBC has given us the opportunity to involve more people and try a lot of new things. We had great experiences working with the facilitators and Regional Junior Branch Teams to put together the Regional Meetings in April and we’ve taken a lot of what we learned and applied to this conference. We have also been able to accept more than four times as many participants as usual. In other years, we have had limitations because of costs and space at the campsite, but with it all happening online, we can’t wait to have many more participants. We have tried to space out our content across timezones because even though the online nature of IJBC has led to a lot of benefits, one huge drawback has been figuring out how to make it accessible across the world. Our JBers’ ability to adapt to online content has made us extremely proud. We have loved seeing all of the loca/national/and regional initiatives that have come out of one of the most difficult times a lot of us have lived through. We hope that IJBC Online creates a new norm of accessible online content and we are so honoured to be sharing this experience with you. Thank you for participating in IJBC and we look forward to learning with you!

WHAT IS IJBC? IJBC (or the International Junior Branch Conference) is a conference for Junior Branch members to learn, discuss important issues in and outside of the organization, and connect with JBers from around the world. IJBC is a combination of training sessions, educational content, and discussions about the future of Junior Branch. We aim to provide methods and tools for Junior Branches to apply at the local and national level. After IJBC, participants are expected to have increased their attitudes, skills and knowledge to become active global citizens and to have new ideas and skills to use in their local, national, and regional contexts. Usually IJBC takes place every year in a location chosen by the NJRs, however we didn’t want to lose this opportunity to connect because of Covid, so we moved online!

6

PAST IJBC? In the past, we’ve held IJBC in each of the 3 regions, last year’s conference being held in Bangkok, Thailand! Usually we are able to have around 100 participants but with our conference being online, we have the cool opportunity to open IJBC up to more people.

INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR BRANCH International Junior Branch is made up of a lot of different hard-working JBers. We have people working on the regional level as well as the international level to improve Junior Branch on the international level and also support JBers nationally and locally. We are made up of three main groups: our Regional Junior Branch Teams, our International Junior Branch Team (IJB Team), and our International Junior Representatives (IJRs).

REGIONAL JUNIOR BRANCH TEAMS

Americas Junior Branch Team (AJB), Europe Middle East and Africa Junior Branch Team (EJB), Asia Pacific Junior Branch Team (APJB) We have three Regional Junior Branch Teams working with NJRs and Local JBers to support their JBs. Each region is divided into smaller neighbourhoods that are a group of National Junior Branches. One of the responsibilities of the regional teams is to work with their Neighbourhood. They are also responsible for planning the regional junior branch meetings that happen around Easter each year.

88

There are 3 different roles that someone can hold on the IJB Team: Committee member, specialist, or project manager. Committee members are JBers who sit on CISV International committees (in Chapter Development, Training & Quality Assurance, Resources & Infrastructure, and Educational Programmes), bringing their experience and providing a JB perspective. They work with CISV members to improve the organization as a whole and liaise back to the IJB Team.

INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR BRANCH

TEAMS

The International Junior Branch Team is made up of JBers from across the world who are either working in specific areas of Junior Branch or representing Junior Branch in CISV. The IJB Team is responsible for representing JB on different CISV committees, creating projects to support JB, and helping lead Junior Branch as a whole. Right now we have 13 people on the IJB Team.

9

Specialists each focus on one topic, working on ways to support JBers and improve our current practices. They are responsible for working with the IJRs, Regional Teams, and NJRs to bring information to Junior Branch. Project Managers have only one focus in their role on the IJB Team. Each has a project they are working to bring to life. Our projects are spread across different themes and target different audiences, from NJRs to local JBers. All three roles on the IJB Team often find opportunities to collaborate and work together. Often our projects have pieces that overlap or members have specific knowledge that benefits a project. We are working to become more efficient in what we do but over the past few years a lot of progress has been made.

9

INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR

REPRESENTATIVES

There are always two IJRs, a junior and a senior, who are responsible for coordinating the IJB Team, representing Junior Branch, and planning the International Junior Branch Conference. Right now, your IJRs are Natasha from Indonesia (senior) and Santana from Canada (junior). One of the roles the IJRs take on is coordinating the IJB Team. They work with the specialists, committee members, and project managers on their projects and offer feedback and advice. The IJRs also represent Junior Branch more formally and have one vote each as members of CISV International. This includes voting for new Governing Board members and voting on motions. New committees or working groups also often ask for a JB representative, so the IJRs work with them to find someone to fit the role. Finally, the IJRs are responsible for coordinating and planning IJBC. In nonpandemic years, this means working with the hosting country to organize the site and logistics as well as working with the facilitators to plan the content.

IJBC 2020 FACILITATORS IJBC Facilitators have been working really hard for months to deliver participants the best content sessions for IJBC 2020. Get to know a little bit about them!

PABLO (ESP) Hello everyone, I’m Pablo, I’m from Spain and 21 years old. I study Telecommunications Engineering and I enjoy dedicating ALL my free time to volunteering in many places (like CISV, students associations and political groups). I love cuddles, and that’s why I’m struggling with this pandemic. Apart from that, my dream job is being a professor at University, and trying to change the world by educating the future generations. During IJBC I will be running sessions related to diversity because I’m bi myself, and because I believe that the ‘more just and peaceful world’ we are aiming at is only possible when we embrace and celebrate diversity.

BIANCA (ROM) Hey I’m Bianca. One of the sessions I will be facilitating at IJBC is about self-development. I think that through the process of discovering yourself, you will get a clearer picture of your own identity, of the person you wanna be.

14 14

SAID (LEB) Hey! I’m Said, the current Lebanese NJR and IJB Research & Evaluation Specialist! I am mostly interested in service work and peace education, and truly believe that CISV can be a platform to do both! As such, it is no accident that I am one of the organizers for this IJBC’s Peace Education and Leadership sessions! From self-discovery debriefs, to expert panelists, to leadership training, I’m really excited to show you all what we have to offer!

ADA (NOR)

Hey everyone! I’m Ada and I’m from Norway. I am super excited for the first ever digital IJBC!!! I study political science and I love a good discussion (catch me in all the discussion sessions lol). I’ve been NJR for two years, but now I’m vice president of CISV Norway. I am a part of the community-building thread at IJBC, because I think it’s more important than ever that we build our community, and remain in contact with each other, even though we can’t meet in person. See you all soon!

GAB (PHI) Intro: Hey! I’m Gab and I am currently the senior NJR of the Philippines and a junior member of the APJB team! Me together with my session partner Isa are doing session on inclusivity, more specifically on how to make CISV more inclusive during times like this. I can’t wait to meet you all hear hear what you guys have to say!

15

15

ELLIE (CAN) Hi everyone! my name is Ellie and I am from Calgary Canada. I am part of the Diversity facilitation group for IJBC. I don’t like matching my socks and I have a cat named Ducky. I am so excited to get to meet all of you virtually and work with you!

NATASHA (INA)

Hi JB world, my name is Sasa, and this is my last event as an IJR! I have grown so much in JB and it has kept me very happy and curious to learn more. Outside of CISV, I work full time and live a comfortable half an hour stroll to the beach, where I spend lots of time reading and snacking.

BARBETTS (BRA)

16 16

Hi everyone! I am Barbetts and I am the senior NJR for JB Brazil. I am working on the sessions about Peace Education and Leadership with Said and Ewa. I am a very curious person and I like to explore everything that is out there in the world! I work with education and different learning aproaches and I am super excited to connect with you all during this IJBC

EWA (POL) Hi I’m Ewa! I’m originally from JB Poland but I live and study in London. I’m so exciting for IJBC happening online because it means that we will be able to connect with more people and try out new tools & formats. I also can’t wait to run sessions within the Leadership & Peace Education thread because it’s supercrucial that JB boosts its content delivery in the current uncertain global climate.

ISA (CRC) Hey! I’m Isa from Costa Rica. A few things about me: I’m 21, I study political sciences and I love cats! I may have met some of you since I’m a former costarican NJR, but if I didn’t I look forward to interacting with you guys during the sessions. I’ll be running the communications thread with Gab and I hope you guys enjoy what we have planned for this IJBC online! Big virtual hug from CR!

SANTANA (CAN) Hi everyone! I’m Santana, one of the IJRs. I’m from the Fredericton chapter but now I live in Montreal, Canada, for university. I love being on Tik Tok for too long, reading, and one of my jobs is writing “Top 10” list scripts for a Youtube Channel. I am currently finishing my first year as IJR and I’m super proud of everything we’ve done, especially in our current situation. I can’t wait for IJBC to meet and learn with so many of you. See you soon!

17

17

VY (VIE) Hi :) This is Vy from Vietnam!! Some of my favorites are Spotify playlists (190 playlists and going strong), Hanoi thrift stores, cafes, and intersectional activism. This year at IJBC I am supporting initiatives on diversity in CISV, including facilitating sessions, Movie Club, and Allyship Spaces. Social justice, especially racial equity, has always been an interest of mine with my experience as a queer Southeast Asian girl in CISV, in Vietnam, and in America. While I wish to be able to see everyone in person, the online format presents great opportunities as it allows IJBC 2020 to be more inclusive and accessible. I hope we will have many fruitful dialogues that will transform CISV for the better!

LEXI (AUT) hello hello, my name is Lexi, I’m from Austria and I am this year’s IJR candidate! I have been to IJBC in person, but I am super excited to hold this one online - I can’t wait to see what we will make out of it! see you soon on discord!

Its purpose is to show that no one always has to be just one type of leader, by highlighting that personal characteristics are fluid and possible to be applied to different situations and settings. The discussion will help us understand the

What is racism and prejudice? Join the Antiracism session as we form a collective understanding of racism, its manifestations in the world as well as the importance of an anti-racist education and its relavance to CISV. By the end of the session, you will have your own answer to the question: “Is CISV racist?” and a few ideas on how to be interpersonally and systemically anti-racist

In this session we will be strategizing a plan on how to be more inclusive and accesible through the internet. We aim to have each NA build a plan on how they can build an online community where people participate in sessions and share their knowledge.

Focused on the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, building on the work done in previous Diversity within CISV sessions, participants will evaluate their role in CISV and in the enforcement of safe space by themselves and by chapter/ NA. Where do you and your chapter stand in your antiracism and pro-LGBTQ+ work? What have you done to protect those margianalized, or did your past actions perpetuate a lack of safe space in CISV?

What more can you do to truly uphold the CISV values of Inclusiveness and Engagement? This session will tackle this question as countries from each region share their evaluation in the previous regional Issues in CISV session and receive feedbacks from others on ways to tackle their problems and remedy past mistakes.

LJR MEETING

THREAD: COMMUNITY BUILDING DATE/TIME: 28 AUG 13:00 UTC

OPEN SPACES

Two trainings happening at once. One more informal one where all LJRs from IJB can meet, talk about struggles, but mostly just community/network building. Helping the LJR understand their importance + local chapters importance in an international setting (ie. twice the reach). The other trainging will gather all NJRs that have LJRs in their JBs. This will be a more formal training and exchange of best practises on how to communicate with, use and include LJRs.

Open spaces are a place where JBers can bring their own topics they are passionate about and facilitate their own discussion or activity. More information is available in the section on how to get involved!

THREAD: IJB COMMUNITY DATE/TIME: 20 AUG 15:00 & 23 AUG 15:00 UTC

ZOOM OUT

THREAD: IJB COMMUNITY DATE/TIME: 20 AUG 18:00, 21 AUG 1:00, 24 AUG 18:00, 25 AUG 1:00 & 6:00, 28 AUG 18:00, 29 AUG 1:00 UTC

25

Zoom out groups are an opportunity to meet other JBers and debrief about what we’ve discussed so far. Each Zoom Out we will have different groups, so feel free to participate as many or as few times as you would like

BOOK CLUB

THREAD: DIVERSITY & INCLUSION DATE/TIME: 28 AUG 02:00 & 15:00 UTC

An initiative we started that is part of our long-term plan to make CISV education more anti-racist is the IJB Book Club. We have created a list of 8 books total, and will be discussing 4 of them at IJBC. We will have a second book club at the end of September discussing the other 4 books. This is a great way to meet new friends in CISV and learn together about important current topics. We decided to split the postcolonialism theme into 2 sets of 4 books. This month, we will focus on works that are considered core and/or groundbreaking contributions to the field of postcolonial studies. Please find below the title and author: Open Veins of Latin America (Eduardo Galeano) Orientalism (Edward Said) The Sympathizer (Viet Thanh Nguyen) Things Fall Apart (Chinua Achebe) To get an idea of who will be participating, if you would like to join a discussion, please fill in this quick form. We will be sending out an email after IJBC about the next book club, so keep you eyes open!

26

MOVIE CLUB

THREAD: DIVERSITY & INCLUSION DATE/TIME: 26 AUG 18:00 UTC

We also started a movie club earlier this summer and watched the miniseries “When They See Us” by Ava Duverney. We met once a week and debriefed each episode. A huge thank you to everyone who attended those calls, we had such great discussions and we can’t wait to continue this initiative. At IJBC, we will be having a discussion about “Oprah Winfrey presents: When They See Us Now”, Oprah’s interview with the Exonerated Five, available on Netflix. Watch the video before attending so we can have a great discussion together!

27

ALLYSHIP SPACE

THREAD: DIVERSITY & INCLUSION DATE/TIME: 20 AUG 08:00, 21 AUG 08:00, 22 AUG 08:00, 23 AUG 08:00, 24 AUG 18:00, 25 AUG 20:00, 26 AUG 20:00, 27 AUG 20:00 UTC

Allyship space is a place where you learn to be an Ally to a specific identity. We will learn through hearing from folks representing that identity about their experience as a celebrator of such identity and someone undergoing oppression, as well as explore informative literature. Through enriching and educational discussions aiming to amplify marginalized voices, allies become informed of the experience of the discussed identities, gain inspiration to engage further research, and learn ways to proactively support the marginalized folks. If nobody of the identities is a part of the discussion or feels safe to be open about their identifications, participants will individually explore a list of curated resources and self-reflect with a prepared prompt. It doesn’t matter if you are an expert or this is the first time you are aware of these identifications. Here, all of us are both the educators and the learners. A discussion with a variance in awareness is always the most engaging and efficient, and we all have something to learn from one another. If you are interested in learning more about the identities listed below or discussing ways you can be a more effective ally, fill out this form, stating the spaces you are interested in joining, and we will select the 5 most requested ones for IJBC’s Allyship Spaces

28

NJR MEETING

NJR Meeting: we will be having a quick NJR meeting to talk about the IJR election coming up and also to give you the opportunity to connect to other NJRs. It is not mandatory, but we encourage you to attend!

THREAD: IJB COMMUNITY DATE/TIME: 19 AUG 15:00 & 20 AUG 3:00 UTC

LJR MEETING

THREAD: IJB COMMUNITY DATE/TIME: 19 AUG 15:00 & 20 AUG UTC

Host a focused discussion on a topic you are passionate about related to online Junior Branch community, antidiscrimination, self-development or community impact. You will organise a 30 minute-1 hour discussion/activity for likeminded JBers to attend and share with one another.

Share about a successful JB initiative you did that is related to online Junior Branch community, anti-discrimination, self-development or community impact. Your JB will get a 2-minute presentation at the start of a main IJBC session for participants to learn more about your initiatives. Sharing is caring!

CALL FOR SESSIONS

Evolution is the continuous process of growth, progression, and development.

We are looking for session ideas that reflect the dynamic nature of CISV, inspire new ways of problem solving, and use creative methods! You can submit your sessions using this link

In 2021, CISV will mark its 70th anniversary. Building on 70 years of inspiration and strength, Global Conference 2021 will focus on the continued evolution of CISV into its future. The conference will invite collaboration, innovation, and new ways of thinking. Delegates will return to their Chapters, NAs, or International positions inspired and empowered with new ideas and new connections that can be put into practical use the following day, helping CISV as a whole – and each individual within it – reach their full potential.

Information on the different elements needed can be found on the Call for Sessions page as well as when the introduction page of the Session Proposal form. We encourage you to read all the different documents (Concept Note and Call for Sessions) and take a closer look at all the elements you need to prepare before submitting your session proposal. Call for Sessions will close September 1st
