Theme of 2013 Annual Retreat organized by Interfaith Ministry of Greater Houston

By Nargis Lakhani What happens when a group of women come together? The first word that comes to mind is ‘gossip’. Maybe that’s true when women meet ‘without an agenda’. But when they pay to participate in a retreat like the annual retreat that the Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston organizes every year, you can expect to hear about life-changing experiences.

I literally forced my niece, Nadiya into attending the retreat. Why? Because I had mixed up my dates and later realized that I already had a commitment on the days of the retreat. When the organization refused a refund, I bull-dozed her into attending.

She is a young mother of two demanding boys aged 13 and 5 and is expecting her third child in September. She looked on this offer as an opportunity to get away from home and to spend some time by herself. “A shortcut away from my day-today responsibilities. Also, maybe to gain some knowledge and experience some peace,” said she. Half expecting her to back out, I was pleasantly surprised when she did and on my return, I went straight from the airport to meet her.

Her face had a different glow about it; she had set up all the work that she’d done over there as well as the hand-outs and books that she had got from there on her kitchen platform. She joyfully shared her experiences with me as she lovingly caressed the material she was talking about.

She shares that when she reached there on Friday evening she found women from being as young as 30 to as young as 70.

They were from all types of backgrounds, from housewives to social workers to teachers. The organizers had something very special about them: very calm, nonjudgmental and their presence made her feel that they “were all a part of me, I felt like I was welcoming myself,”. She further shares, “I feel there is so much more to life. I feel that I respect myself even more now and have acquired self-con-

fidence. The experience has made me understand that each and every woman has great potential. There is always so much to learn with every new experience that one encounters.”

Recalling her memories of attending the yoga session with Jenny, she recalls what Jenny said, “ …taking a deep breath and dancing with our breath helps us heal ourselves; each one of us can connect and experience the divine because we all are made of the same light. Love flows between all human beings; we need to take time out to look within ourselves and search for that inner power which will ultimately give us peace, patience and happiness. Never take your breath for granted.” Talking about how this session impacted her deeply, she says, “Before the session I just sat there blankly without any expectations. However, as the session progressed, I started to feel a connection between me and my soul.

It felt like my soul within was so happy for the fact that I knocked at it.”

She says that she found such genuine warmth and invitation for friendship from everyone at the retreat that it felt like a different world altogether. In the session ‘Sounds of Faith’ she felt how religion actually binds us all and there is absolutely no cause for disharmony between them. She recalls the thoughts that travelled through her mind and have left a deep impression in her mind, “I kept thinking to myself that when we all have the same destination, then why should we ever have to fight and judge the other? We should respect every way of expression of faith as long as it is not harmful to anyone.” She learned some important lessons on ‘nonviolent communication’. Compassionate communication is the key, it is the most precious tool and if we learn to communicate well then most of our misunderstandings and problems can be solved.

Salma Hooshmand, another participant, is a resident of Houston from over

10 years. She has a son Habeeb age 15 and a daughter, Layla, age 13. She is an adjunct instructor of English at Houston Community College. She has been involved with the InterFaith Ministries’ Dinner Dialogues and Women’s gatherings for a few years; hence this year she attended the annual retreat. She is very impressed by this organization and aligns with their vision of building strong bridges amongst the various faith communities, correct misunderstandings as well as provides various services to the Houstonians. Her

son has also been involved in the IM’s ILead program for youths and this has been an invaluable experience for him.

Says Salma, “I enjoyed the conference immensely! It was nice to meet other like-minded women who are each on their own spiritual/religious journey. My favorite part was the speakers who were absolutely fabulous. It was an honor to be able to hear the stories of such amazing, accomplished women. My favorite was Indrani Goradia, the keynote speaker. She spoke about her experiences training for and competing in a triathlon. I have recently experienced training and running a 5K, which although not nearly as grand an undertaking, yet allowed me to personally relate to her story.”

When asked about her most memorable experience, Salma says that walking the ‘labyrinth’ for the first time was a very spiritual and reflective walk. She feels much enriched from what she has learned

through interacting with some great speakers and participants.

Giving details about the retreat, she wrote: On the first weekend of April 2013, Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston convened its third annual women’s interfaith retreat, The Ways of Women, at The Cenacle House in Houston, Texas.

The retreat brought together fifty women from Houston’s diverse religious communities where over eight faith traditions were represented, including but not limited to the Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Unitarian Universalist faith traditions. The atmosphere was full of respect, openness, learning, and friendship throughout the weekend.

The women’s retreat had a multitude of speakers who presented their rich, personal stories about the ways their faith influences their experiences, vocations, and family lives. Workshop sessions included topics such as “My Way to Empowering Women” presented by Dr. Ruma Acharya and “My Way to Helping Others Heal” presented by Lanecia A. Rouse and Laura Cohen. The keynote address was a lively, fun, and genuine personal tale of triumph entitled “My Way to Spiritual Strength” given by Indrani Goradia, founder of Indrani’s Light Foundation. There were several other workshops offered throughout the weekend including art collage, yoga, and a candlelit labyrinth walk with live music.

The weekend was a wonderful experience of women building bridges across faith communities.

The new law adopted

by City Council requires cars and other motor vehicles to keep a separation of more than three feet while passing, and trucks or commercial vehicles to keep a separation of more than six feet.

Vulnerable road users are defined as a walkers or runners; the physically disabled, such as someone in a wheelchair; a stranded motorist or passengers; highway construction, utility or maintenance workers; tow truck operators; cyclists; moped, motor-driven cycle and scooter drivers; or horseback riders.

As a city, we need to respect and protect everyone and anyone who uses our roads. This ordinance will make our city even more attractive to those who want to enjoy traveling in forms other than by car.

In addition to requiring safe passing and trailing distances from vulnerable road users, this

ordinance prohibits any motor vehicle occupant from throwing any objects or substances at them.

BikeHouston hailed the ordinance as part the city’s ongoing efforts to make Houston more “bicycle-friendly”, noting that Houston is a city of cars that also has a big population of people who rely on cycling for transportation and recreation.

The Safe Passing ordinance is meant to encourage more cycling in Houston. NEW DELHI: The BJP on Tuesday welcomed Pakistani Prime Minister-designate Nawaz Sharif for his stated desire to improve ties with India, in what can possibly create space for the UPA government to make fresh efforts in normalization of ties with the estranged neighbour.

Congratulating Sharif for his "historic electoral victory", BJP chief Rajnath Singh said Pakistani PM-designate's "statements on rebuilding relations with India are a positive sign". "Since Mr Sharif has publicly stated to pick up the pieces of 1999 peace process we hope that the agenda for peace and stability in the region is not hijacked by vested interests operating from Pakistan. Keeping in view our past experiences with Pakistan, the BJP views Mr Sharif's statements with cautious optimism," said the BJP chief ignoring the statement of one of his colleagues on Monday criticizing PM Manmohan Singh for inviting Sharif to visit India.

"We hope Mr Sharif is able to walk the talk," the BJP chief said.

Singh's praise, if guarded, for Sharif's declared intention can open up room for the UPA to consider a fresh peace initiative augurs well for a fresh effort to explore the possibility of improved ties with Pakistan.

UPA's approach towards Pakistan has considerably been shaped by Congress's fear of being accused by the BJP of a "sell-out" to the hostile neighbour. Congress's wariness was the main reason why the government had abandoned the unorthodox method of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Sharm-el-Sheikh in 2009, when he controversially agreed to put Islamabad's allegations of Indian encouragement to insurgents in Pakistan's Balochistan province on the bilateral agenda.

Sources also said that Congress had leaned hard on the government to ensure that it did not come off as weak in dealing with the recent Chinese incursion in eastern Ladakh. With the party set to face off with the BJP in the assembly polls slated for November in the lead up to the 2014 parliamentary elections, apprehensions of the saffron outfit's restricted government's room to maneuver considerably. Viewed against such a backdrop, the BJP chief's statement opens up space for the government to respond to the friendly overtures from Sharif who — both during the campaign and after his victory — has vowed to make a sincere effort for peace and not to let Pakistan be used as launch pad for terror strikes against India, and has promised an inquiry into ISI's involvement in the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai as well as the Kargil aggression.

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama called Pakistan's incoming prime minister Nawaz Sharif to congratulate him on his election win and to pledge strong cooperation with Islamabad, the White House said Tuesday.

"Today the president spoke by phone with Nawaz Sharif to congratulate him on his party's success in May 11 parliamentary elections," said White House spokesman Jay Carney.

"The president also thanked Mr. Sharif for his role in the historic transfer of power between civilian governments, a significant milestone in Pakistan's democracy," Carney said. "The two leaders agreed to continue to work together to strengthen US-Pakistan relations and advance our shared interest of a stable, secure, and prosperous Pakistan and region," the statement said.

Obama also praised the "extraordinary voter turnout and courage" shown by Pakistanis determined to cast their votes despite intimidation and violence by extremists.

Sharif said after his election that he would extend "full support" to Washington as US and NATO troops withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

Speaking to senior anchor and analyst Kamran Khan in Geo News program 'Aaj Kamran Khan Kay Saath', Shahbaz Sharif, whose party emerged as the largest winner in May 11 polls, said launching the Metro Bus Project in Karachi is PML-N's one of the top priorities.

To a question, the former Punjab chief minisrter said the load shedding issue would have to be addressed by adopting short, medium and long term measures.

He said as a short-term measure a check on power theft and line losses would be ensured besides recovery of bills from provinces. The recovered money will be injected into the system which will serve two aims - stop the circular debt from snowballing further and generate more power.

Later, in the long-run additional power would be generated through available resources including coal reserves and added to the national grid.

Mr Sharif vowed that just like 'we developed the Punjab, we will build Pakistan on the same lines' and the country would be put on a path to a constant progress.

Sharif poised to lead Pakistan again after long wait ISLAMABAD: After 14 years out of power, Nawaz Sharif is poised to become prime minister again, and he is a man in a hurry to clean up what he calls Pakistan's mess.

Sharif said on Saturday his Pakistan Muslim League Party-Nawaz (PMLN) was the clear winner in general elections and that he hoped for a majority to avoid a coalition.

He inherits a country with a dizzying array of troubles, from chronic power cuts to a Taliban insurgency.

"The challenges are huge," the portly Sharif told Reuters in his bullet-proof car during the last days of campaigning. "We have to bail out the economy."

Sharif, who vows to bring in free market enterprise and ease economic controls, says speedy growth is the only answer for nuclear-armed Pakistan, a strategic U.S. ally.

The powerful military still calls the shots in Pakistan but the poll marked the first time that an elected government will replace another one. Nevertheless, Sharif will have to work with the generals, who control foreign policy and security.

The new civilian government will also have to play its part in Pakistan's difficult relationship with the United States.

Washington has a long-standing alliance with Pakistan, but is troubled by elements in the country supporting Islamic militants fighting U.S. troops in neighbouring Afghanistan.

Osama bin Laden was found and killed in Pakistan in 2011.

In addition, the economy is stuttering. Power cuts that can last all day have infuriated Pakistanis and crippled key industries. Corruption and poverty are rampant, and infrastructure is crumbling.

Sharif, who made his fortune in steel, seems to have matured as a politician since he was toppled by

former army chief and president Pervez Musharraf in a bloodless coup in 1999.

As the main opposition leader, he avoided antagonising Pakistan's powerful army, or bringing down the Pakistan People's Party-led coalition government when it was in trouble.

Instead, he waited patiently for an opportunity to rule and now that his moment has come, he says he is in a hurry to fix Pakistan.

The honeymoon will be short.

NEED FOR REFORM Pakistan needs billions of dollars from donors to avert a balance of payments crisis but the cash may not flow to the South Asian nation unless politically sensitive economic reforms are implemented.

So far, one politician after another has failed to muster the courage to bring change. Sharif's background suggests he may have the stomach for it, based on his attempts in the past to reverse socialist policies and open up the economy.

Sharif, who was born into a family of wealthy industrialists in 1949, served as prime minister twice in the 1990s, when he tried to promote free market policies.

His family is from Lahore, the capital of Punjab, Pakistan's most prosperous and populous province.

Now he says he is willing to again risk a backlash, and cut government expenditure by 30 percent in order to secure international backing for the economy.

"You see privatisation, free market economy, deregulation have been hallmarks of our party in government," he said. "We are going to pick up the threads from

where we left off."

Despite his reform credentials, Sharif may raise concerns in the West because of his conservative Islamic values: in 1991 he tried to make sharia the country's supreme law.

More recently he has been accused of failing to act against militant groups that have a breeding ground in Punjab. He is one of the few major politicians not on the hit-list of Taliban insurgents.

Sharif's two terms as prime minister in the 1990s were marred by allegations of graft and Pakistan conducted its first nuclear tests on his watch in 1998.

THE MILITARY CONNECTION Sharif was a protege of military

dictator General Zia ul-Haq in the 1980s.

But he became a victim of the powerful military when he was overthrown by Musharraf. He was then convicted of corruption and given a life sentence for hijacking, because he refused to allow an airliner carrying Musharraf to land in Pakistan.

Sharif went into exile in Saudi Arabia, but never lost hope of returning to politics one day.

"In private conversations, Nawaz still gets very emotional when he remembers that period," said a senior journalist who has reported on Sharif for decades. "He has not forgotten being handcuffed and walking through the airport.

His face still gets red in anger when he recalls those days."

No surprise, then, that he now talks tough against the army meddling in civilian affairs - a risky stance in a country ruled by generals for more than half of its 66-year history, either through coups or from behind the scenes.

Sharif's attempt to fire Musharraf as army chief ultimately cost him his job in 1999. He will have to avoid further errors in judgment to survive Pakistan's stormy politics, especially when it comes to the top army officers.

Musharraf attempted a political comeback of his own in March when he returned after nearly four years of self-imposed exile hoping to contest the election.

Instead, he has been barred from public office for life and is under house arrest at his luxury farmhouse as cases against him grind through the courts.

With his nemesis humiliated and out of the picture, politics has come full circle for Sharif. He has patiently plotted his own return to the top from his lavish, 700-acre estate near Lahore where peacocks strut on the lawns.

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan has issued a list about party positions in the National Assembly, putting PML-N on the top with 123 seats, while Pakistan People’s Party secured 31 seats in the lower house of the parliament, SAMAA reported.

Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf won 26, MQM 18 and JUI-F 10 seats in the National Assembly.

Pakistan Muslim League-F (PML-F) secured four and Jamaat-e-Islami won 3 seats, while National People’s Party, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, Awami National Party and PML-Q bagged two seats each.

Election 2013: Party positions in Provincial Assemblies

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan has issued a list of party position in all four provincial assemblies following May 11 general elections.

According to the ECP, PTI stood first with 35 seats in KPK Assembly, while independent candidates secured 14 seats.

In Punjab, PML N won 212 seats, PTI 18, PPP 8 and independent candidates secured 39 seats. PPP topped the list in Sindh with 62 seats and MQM secured 37.

In Balochistan, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party and PML N secured 9 seats each, while JUI and National Party won 8 each, and independent candidates managed to win 8 seats.

“First feed them, see the satisfaction on their faces and then bill them a reasonable charge.

That’s my culture and that is what I like to do.

It’s a case of instant gratification and that’s what keeps us going” says Mr. Imran Momin, the proud owner of Savoy Restaurant at the Savoy Plaza on Wilcrest. Savoy is a landmark that the South Asian community prefers to frequent, be they local residents or visitors.

Three things stand out about Savoy –its food, the easygoing friendly banter and the ambience. When you are at Savoy, you get the feeling of being transported back into your own country, be it India or Pakistan. Any given day and any given time that you go to this restaurant, you find at least some tables that are occupied; the amazing difference here is that you also find lots of Hispanics and people from all over Asia come here to eat.

Savoy started out as a small barbeque joint way back in 1986 and slowly grew from there.

Today it is spread over a huge area and has a grocery store attached to it. Both the restaurant and the grocery store are equally popular. Mr. Liyakat Momin came to the USA from Pakistan in 1981, with a desire to give a better life to his family. He had some good friends who had preceded him; they were his role models. His family joined him in 1985.Today he is a happy man, satisfied with his life. Satisfied with what he has provided not only for himself but for the community of Asians as well. Says Mr. Liyakat Momin, “I embrace change, I prepare myself for it all the time. I love life and never want to retire from work”. Humility, charity, culture and religion – these are the values by which he lives and wants to pass on to his children as well as grandchildren.

His oldest son Imran has now joined this family owned business to help carry forward the legacy. Imran is 37years old, married to an American and they have a 7year old son. Imran came to the US when he was eight, left home for school when he was eighteen and has only recently moved back into Houston. Imran has an MBA and has worked with the Marriott group of hotels as Manager for many years. When he was at school and was looking for part time work, he found work as ‘a cook’ at KFC from where he learned the skill of ‘food management’. His next job was at ‘ToysRUs ‘where he learned to work manually, unloading trucks and assembling bicycles. Imran has picked up an invaluable lesson i.e. the LEARN model- L – listen, E - empathize, A – apologize, R – respond, N – notify. He values this model which taught him never to push problems under the carpet. If dust is pushed under the carpet, it accumulates and soon becomes dirt, dirt turns to clay and clay will eventually become concrete which will then become a permanent bump and will show up but will not be easy to dislodge.

While ensuring that the cultural legacy of Savoy is upheld, Imran is determined to modernize the back office operations – the kitchen, the service and the monitoring. He wants to control the food inventory such that the food wastage is minimized. Savoy prides itself on cooking and serving only fresh food; it literally disposes off all the day’s leftovers. Imran wants the hygiene

and the atmosphere to be more inviting and appealing to the younger generation as well. He is introducing halal chicken nuggets and fries so the children find something of their choice too. The other Asians love the food here and so Imran wants Savoy to accommodate the whole Asian community, make it more of a family hang-out. On an average, the restaurant serves over a thousand customers on weekdays and on weekends it is three times over.

He learned another important lesson whilst interacting with a Patel, recalls Imran fondly. The Gujju uncle asked him, “How many mothers do you have?” taken aback and angry, Imran shot back, “of course, only one”. Man held after four-year-old son shoots neighbour kid Anthony Senatore, 33, was charged with six counts of endangering the welfare of children and a disorderly person's offence for enabling access by minors to a loaded firearm, said prosecutor Jim McClain from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.

Senatore's son was playing in the yard April 8 when he went inside and retrieved his father's loaded .22-calibre rifle from the bedroom. When he came back out, he fired a single shot that struck six-year-old Brandon Holt in the head.

Brandon was taken to the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead the next day.

In addition to the loaded rifle, four other firearms were found in Senatore's bedroom, all unsecured, close to ammunition and accessible to his three children, the prosecutor's office said.

Boy survives suicide attempt after 10-storey fall

A 15-year-old boy in Russia's eastern city of Chita survived after attempting suicide by jumping from the 10th floor of a residential apartment building, police said.

The teenager attempted suicide after his parents allegedly forbid him watching videos on internet. The teenager jumped out of a window of his apartment on the 10th floor of the building on Krasnoarmeiskaya street.

He landed on a tree and got stuck in the branches.

He was hospitalised in an intensive care ward as he sustained severe injuries after the fall, police added.

Woman kicked off plane for singing Whitney Houston's hit This is one passenger who doesn't have "the voice."

An American Airlines pilot was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger refused to stop singing Whitney Houston’s hit song I Will Always Love You. The woman had been belting out Whitney Houston songs, but failed to wow those on board with the painful renditions.

Despite staff telling passengers they could not take photographs while on board the aircraft, one managed to briefly film the woman being escorted down the aircraft’s aisle in handcuffs — still singing the 1990s pop song.

Footage taken shows just how underwhelming the performance was, with the person claiming she had been screaming and singing for an hour. The solo performance began shortly into the flight from Los Angeles to New York and her crooning quickly became too much for passengers and staff on the domestic flight. The pilot was forced to change course halfway through the six hour flight and make an unscheduled stop at Kansas City so officers could escort the woman from the plane.

Airport spokesman Joe McBride told a local newschannel: “The woman was being disruptive and was removed from the plane for interfering with the flight crew. There was a federal air marshal on the aircraft, who subdued the woman and put her in cuffs and removed her from the plane.”

The woman was interviewed and later released without charge. While the song she chose to entertain her fellow passengers with is best known for Whitney Houston’s cover in the film The Bodyguard, it was originally released by country singer-songwriter Dolly Parton in 1974.

5 Pakistanis found guilty of child sex abuse in UK

LONDON: A group of seven men including five Pakistanis has been convicted by a jury for subjecting girls to years of rape, torture and sexual violence in Oxford, local media reported.

According to the reports the seven men were found guilty of a total of 43 charges relating to six victims. The accused were identified as Akhtar Dogar, 32, Anjum Dogar, 31, and Bassam Karrar, 33, and Mohammed Karrar, 38.

The other men were Kamar Jamil, 27, Zeeshan Ahmed, 27 and Assad Hussain, 32. All lived in Oxford. The girls were raped, sold as prostitutes and trafficked around the country, media reports said.

Nearly 200 killed in Myanmar boat accident Naypyidaw - Boats carrying about 200 Rohingya Muslims who were evacuating ahead of a storm have capsized off western Myanmar, killing all but one person, UN officials have said. The vessels hit trouble on Monday night after leaving Pauktaw township in Rakhine state, said a spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). "They were travelling to another camp ahead of the cyclone," the spokeswoman added. Kirsten Mildren, who works for the same UN agency, told Al Jazeera there was only one confirmed survivor

from Monday's accident. The victims were trying to escape Cyclone Mahasen which is expected on Thursday and Friday. The UN has warned the storm could lead to "life-threatening conditions". Myanmar state television said on Monday that thousands of people displaced by communal violence last year had been evacuated from makeshift camps to safer ground in the event of the storm. The report said authorities had moved 5,158 people from low-lying camps in the Rakhine state capital, Sittwe, to safer shelter. But human rights groups said that the government has

been too slow to act, and ignored earlier warnings to provide shelter to displaced people.

'Extremely vulnerable': The state television report said displaced people were moved in 10 other townships in western Myanmar where communal violence flared last year between Muslims and Buddhists, taking hundreds of lives and leaving more than 100,000 people homeless. It did not give the number of people evacuated in those locations. Myanmar is a predominantly Buddhist country but about 5 percent of its 60 million people are Muslims.

They face a growing anti-Muslim campaign led by radical Buddhist monks.

Preparations: Cyclone Mahasen is expected to hit neighbouring Bangladesh on Thursday or Friday. Images taken by NASA's Aqua satellite on Monday showed the storm's centre northeast of Sri Lanka with it packing winds of up to 50 knots (92km per hour). Those winds are expected to increase to 130km per hour as the storm moves north. The space agency said it "sees a strengthening" of the storm and forecasts an upgrade to a Cyclone 1 level by Wednesday.

Indian Navy gets first fighter squadron

NEW DELHI - The Indian navy has commissioned its first fighter squadron in three decades with the 303 'Black Panthers' squadron getting formal status but will have to wait till the end of this year for the INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier to arrive from Russia to start sea-borne operations.

The new Indian Navy Air Squadron (INAS), commissioned at a ceremony led

by Defence Minister A K Antony, operates the MiG 29 K fighters that were inducted into service in 2010 and have been going through trials and training missions over the past three years before the arrival of the carrier.

The commissioning marks the beginning of an eventful year for the Navy that is set to see many of its major projects reach critical milestones in the coming month. The first will be the activation of the nuclear reactor on board the INS Arihant nuclear missile submarine later this month, following which the vessel will go for sea trials before a formal com-

missioning by next year. The indigenous aircraft carrier that is being constructed in Kochi will also be 'launched' at a ceremony on August 12, marking a milestone in its developmental cycle, Antony announced.

The naval squadron, which has been nicknamed 'Black Panthers', is the first fighter squadron to be commissioned after the Sea Harrier fighters were inducted in December 1983.

The new fighters will give a major edge due to their modern avionics, range and weapons suite that has been compared to the best in the world. The navy has termed the new squadron 'the game changers' to reflect the increase in capability. The squadron has been christened as the 303 after the .303 cartridge that revolutionised warfare in the mid 19 th century with its now legendary design. With 29 additional fighters on order from Russia as part of a $1.2 billion follow on contract, the navy will induct another fighter squadron within the next two years.

Threat to Sanjay Dutt's life?

Arthur Road Jail has received an anonymous letter about threat to actor Sanjay Dutt's life Inspector-general of police (Prisons) Vinod Lokhande today said that Arthur Road Central Jail authorities in Mumbai had received an anonymous letter alleging threat to actor Sanjay Dutt's life.

However, he did not divulge details. "We have taken cognisance of the letter received three days ago and shall be providing adequate security to Sanjay Dutt," said a top officer of Arthur Road jail.

Sanjay Dutt Earlier today, Dutt told a court that he will surrender before it Thursday to undergo the remaining prison term in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

Dutt had made an oral plea in the same court earlier about surrendering before Yerwada prison authorities but it was turned down by the designated TADA Judge. Thereafter, he moved a written application which he abruptly withdrew today.

It is not clear in which jail Dutt would be lodged but authorities said he might be taken initially to Arthur Road Jail and then shifted to Yerwada prison, police sources said.

Normally, as per the practice,

undertrials are kept at Arthur Road jail while convicts are lodged in Yerwada prison and other jails in Maharashtra, the sources said.

Dutt has been convicted under the Arms Act and sentenced to a five-year jail term. He has already undergone imprisonment for one-and-a-half-years.

The Supreme Court refused to grant more time to him to surrender to undergo the remaining three-and-a- half-year jail term.

On May 10, the apex court had dismissed Dutt's plea seeking review of its judgement on his conviction and five-year jail term.

We must shake hands to raise Asia’s standing: Li Keqiang Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, who will leave for India on Sunday, revealed to a visiting Indian delegation that a trip he made to India some 27 years ago as a Communist Youth League leader left such a “lasting impact” that it had influenced his decision to make New Delhi the destination of his first overseas visit.

“What I saw and felt in that trip, such as the Taj Mahal and prestigious Indian universities and research institutes, and especially, the warmth and hospitality of the Indian people, left a lasting impact on me,” Mr. Li told a 100-member youth delegation from India here on Wednesday evening.

“In a few days’ time,” he said, “I will make India the first stop of my first overseas visit

as the Premier of China. I made this decision not just because India is an important neighbour, and one of the most populous countries in the world, but also because of the seeds of friendship sown during my own youth.”

Mr. Li, who took over as Premier in March and is the second-ranked leader behind President Xi Jinping, hosted the delegation in the central leadership compound, Zhongnanhai.

He told the delegation it was his “great pleasure” to meet young people from India before he embarked on his visit, which will see him spending three days in New Delhi and Mumbai. He will subsequently travel to Pakistan, Germany and Switzerland.

Mr. Li told the students about the special affinity he had with India, because of the time he spent there when he was 30 years old. At that time, he was the Secretary of the Communist Youth League (CYL).

The Chinese side, according to sources, issued regular visas to delegates from Jammu and Kashmir — unlike stapled visas issued to past delegations — while the Indian side decided to not include a representative from Arunachal Pradesh, considering China’s visa policies and sensitivities towards the State.

Immigration Shapes US Parties as Much as Demographics WASHINGTON: The debate in Congress over immigration reform has as much to do with the fate of America’s two main political parties as it does with the demographics of the United States.

Both the Democratic and Republican parties are pushing immigration reform now in part to secure Hispanic votes later, but their parties’ future may be out of their control.

Voters are political currency for whichever party can woo them, and right now, the Democrats are way ahead, not just with Hispanics, but also with Asian-Americans, an increasingly important voting bloc. About 71 percent of Hispanic voters and 73 percent of Asian-American voters cast ballots for Democratic President Barack Obama in the 2012 election.

Of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., about eight million are Hispanic, while

about 1.3 million are Asian and Pacific Islanders, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Members of both groups have indicated in national surveys that they lean more Democratic than Republican – something both parties are considering as they decide whether to put many of the undocumented immigrants on a path to citizenship and, ultimately, voting rights.

Some political analysts attribute those pro-Democratic Party sentiments in part to the anti-immigration rhetoric used last year by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Some say another factor is President Obama’s efforts to help undocumented youths avoid deportation if they were brought to the U.S. illegally by their families.

“Immigration alone is not going to make someone vote Republican or Democratic, but we do

know from all the polling that if either party is seen as blocking immigration reform, that’s going to be an easy way to lose voters,” said Philip Wolgin, senior policy analyst on immigration at the Center for American Progress.

Battlegrounds Wolgin said traditionally Republican states such as Arizona, Texas, North Carolina and Georgia have the potential to move toward the Democrats as “voters of color, particularly Latino voters, are becoming an ever-larger share of the total voting population.”

Those states are considered political battlegrounds that can determine a presidential election, and they’ll add even more “voters of color” if the proposed path to citizenship is approved by Congress.

Asians and Hispanics are the fastest growing demographic groups in the U.S. About 430,000 Asians moved to the U.S. in 2010,

making up about 36 percent of all new legal and illegal immigration.

The same year, 370,000 Hispanics came to the U.S., according to the Washington-based Pew Research Center, a leading source of immigration data.

No turning back For its political survival, the Republican Party may have no choice but to do diversify its white base because the face of the U.S. is becoming irrefutably browner.

William Frey, a demographer with the Brookings Institution, a Washington-based policy research group, said the U.S. population is aging, which means lower reproductive rates among white Americans. Hispanic and Asian immigrant groups traditionally are younger, which means higher reproductive rates.

“Those minorities are growing very rapidly at younger age groups at the same time that the older population is mostly white,”

Frey said. “So move out 20 or 30 years, and the younger population is increasingly Asian and Hispanic, and the older population will be made up of white ‘baby boomers.’”

Next generation Most of the political debate in Washington is focused on what to do with the undocumented immigrants now, and how immigration reform might affect the next election season. But Frey said it’s really the second and third generations of immigrants that should concern politicians.

“Eventually they’re going to get to issues that are important to immigrant populations besides immigration,” Frey said. “The second issue is the education of their children, and I think right now Democrats would get support and would be more likely to do something.”

Coffee with Apple chief: $610,000 SAN FRANCISCO: An anonymous bidder paid $610,000 in a charity auction for coffee date with Apple chief Tim Cook, the organizers said Wednesday.

The Tim Cook auction tied the record for highest winning bid at charity auction site haritybuzz, according to a statement from the group and its partner, The Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights.

Kishore Kumar Early life Kishore Kumar was born into the Bengali Ganguly family in Khandwa, Central Provinces and Berar (now in Madhya Pradesh) as Abhas Kumar Ganguly.[1] His father Kunjalal Ganguly (Gangopadhyay) was a lawyer. His mother Gouri Devi came from a wealthy Bengali family. Kishore was the youngest of four siblings, the other three being Ashok Kumar (the eldest), Sati Devi, and Anoop Kumar.

While Kishore was still a child, Ashok Kumar became a Bollywood actor. (Later, Anoop Kumar also ventured into cinema with the help of Ashok Kumar). Spending time with his brothers, Kishore also started to take a keen interest in movies and music. He became a fan of singer-actor Kundan Lal Saigal, whom he considered his guru, and tried to follow Saigal's singing style.

Personal life Kishore Kumar married four times. His first wife was Bengali singer and actress Ruma Guha Thakurta aka Ruma Ghosh.

Their marriage lasted from 1950 to 1958.

Kishore's second wife was actress Madhubala, who had worked with him on many films including his home production Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958) and Jhumroo (1961). When Kishore Kumar proposed to her, Madhubala was sick and was planning to go to London for treatment. At this time, she didn't know that she had a ventricular septal defect (hole in the heart), and her father wanted her to wait and consult the London doctors first. Furthermore, at the time he was married to Ruma. After his divorce, because Kishore Kumar was Bengali Hindu (Brahmin) and Madhubala Muslim, they had a civil wedding ceremony in 1960.

He is also known as an actor, lyricist, composer, producer, director, screenplay writer and scriptwriter. Kishore Kumar sang in many Indian languages including Bengali, Hindi, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Malayalam and Oriya.

He won 8 Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer and holds the record for most number of Filmfare Awards won in that category. He was awarded the "Lata Mangeshkar Award" by the Madhya Pradesh government and from that year onwards, the Madhya Pradesh Government initiated a new award called the "Kishore Kumar Award" for contributions to Hindi cinema.

Kishore Kumar sired two sons, Amit Kumar (playback singer) with Ruma, and Sumit Kumar with Leena Chandavarkar.

Kumar is said to have been paranoid about not being paid. During recordings, he would sing only after his secretary confirmed that the producer had made the payment. Once, when he discovered that his dues hadn't been fully paid, he landed up for shooting with make-up on only one side of his face. When the director questioned him, he replied "Aadha paisa to aadha make-up." (Half make-up for half payment).

On the sets of Bhai Bhai, Kishore Kumar refused to act because the director M V Raman owed him five thousand rupees.

Ashok Kumar persuaded him to do the scene. But, when the shooting started, he walked across the floor and, each time he walked a few places, he said, Paanch Hazzar Rupaiya (five thousand rupees) and did a somersault. After he reached the end of the floor, he went out of the studio, jumped into his car, and ordered his driver Abdul to drive away.On another occasion, when producer R. C. Talwar did not pay his dues in spite of repeated reminders, Kishore turned up at Talwar's residence one morning and started shouting "Hey Talwar, de de mere

aath hazaar" ("Hey Talwar, give me my eight thousand"). He did this every morning until Talwar paid him.

The film Anand (1971) was originally supposed to star Kishore Kumar and Mehmood Ali in the lead.[18] Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the director of the film, was asked to meet Kishore Kumar to discuss the project. However, when he went to Kishore Kumar's house, he was driven away by the gatekeeper due to a misunderstanding. Kishore Kumar (himself a Bengali) hadn't been paid for a stage show organized by another Bengali man, and had instructed his gatekeeper to drive away this "Bengali", if he ever visited the house. When Hrishikesh Mukherjee (also a Bengali) went to Kishore Kumar's house, the gatekeeper drove him away, mistaking him for the "Bengali" that Kishore Kumar had asked him to drive away. Consequently, Mehmood had to leave the film as well, and new actors (Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan) were signed up for the film.

Many journalists and writers have written about Kishore Kumar's seemingly eccentric behavior. Kishore Kumar had put a "Beware of Kishore" sign at the door of his Warden Road flat, where he stayed for some time while his bungalow was being done up. Once, producer-director H. S. Rawail, who owed him some money, visited his flat to pay the dues. Kishore Kumar took the money, and when Rawail offered to shake hands with him, he reportedly put Rawail's hand in his mouth, bit it, and asked "Didn’t you see the sign?". Rawail laughed off the incident and left quickly.

Kishore Kumar was a loner, and in an interview with Pritish Nandy (1985), he said that he had no friends – he preferred talking to his trees instead.Once, when a reporter made a comment about how lonely he must be, Kishore Kumar took her to his garden. He then named some of the trees in his garden, and introduced them to the reporter as his closest friends.

According to another reported incident, once Kishore Kumar was to record a song for producer-director G. P. Sippy. As Sippy approached his bungalow, he saw Kishore going out in his car. Sippy pleaded him to stop his car, but Kishore only increased the speed of his car. Sippy chased him to Madh Island, where Kishore Kumar finally stopped his car near the ruined Madh Fort.

When Sippy questioned his strange behavior, Kishore Kumar refused to recognize or talk to him and threatened to call police.

Sippy had to return. Next morning, Kishore Kumar reported for the recording. An angry Sippy questioned him about his behavior on the previous day. However, Kishore Kumar insisted that Sippy must have seen a dream, and claimed that he was in Khandwa on the previous day.

Actor Ranbir Kapoor, who is playing the lead with Deepika Padukone in Ayan Mukerji's romantic film 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani', feels that he has miles to go as an actor "I am an ambitious actor and hope would get to work with a lot of actors and directors. I have miles to go as an actor.. I am happy that my parents are proud of me... It feels great, " Ranbir said. He was speaking at an event organised by travel company 'Make My Trip', which has partnered with 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' slated for May 31 release.

Ranbir, who would be sharing the screen space with his parents Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, in an upcoming film 'Besharam', said he admired their work as actors. "It was a good experience for me to shoot with my parents. We used to discuss scenes and rehearse. Both are very good actors.

It was like a family get-together, " the 30-year-old said. Ranbir said he had learnt a lot from his parents, who were termed as one of the best on-screen pairs in their heydays in Bollywood.

"I have learnt a lot by observing them. My dad bullies director and others... and I wish to do that someday, " he quipped. 'Besharam' is an upcoming comedy film directed by Abhinav Kashyap.

The film stars Ranbir Kapoor and Pallavi Sharda and is scheduled to release in October. Responding to a query, Ranbir said he was a loner though comfortable with himself. "I love to travel alone... I am a loner.

I do not need any company... I am comfortable with myself... I visit restaurants, shop etc, " he said. Ranbir revealed that his favourite destination is New York which he would like to visit with or without his girlfriend.

Vidya called up designer Sabyasachi to design her clothes for the several appearences at Cannes. "Sabyasachi is designing my clothes and Jayati Bose will be doing my styling for Cannes," she said.

The newer generations of actors are all very cool. It makes for entertaining news to pit us against each other but there is no such thing.

Everyone is too busy to worry about others and I share a close bond with Arjun. As far as Ranbir is concerned I have a great amount of respect for him and he has set a benchmark for all of us.

Personal life is my personal life, what do I say but I am single.

No, I wasn't dating Anushka but we were very close. She is one of the most amazing people that I have ever met. She is brilliant and extremely talented. I am indebted to her for whatever she has taught me not only in my craft of acting but also in my life. She is a special person.

Not at all. We are cool.

What about Deepika Padukone?

We hang out together like youngsters do.

Just because she is Deepika Padukone and I am an actor doesn't mean anything. I am a hugger and kisser and I do that with everyone.

Go Goa Gone Review Film: Go Goa Gone Bollywood Celebden Rating: 3/5 Cast: Kunal Khemu, Vir Das, Anand Tiwari, Puja Gupta and Saif Ali Khan Music: Sachin-Jigar Direction : Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK Experimenting is good and Bollywood seems to be discovering that. Go Goa Gone falls into the same category of movies as Delhi Belly, with plenty of cuss words and a crazy plot. The laughs come thick and fast and the pace of the movie, especially in the buildup towards the interval is excellent. Post the interval though, the movie loses some steam. The USP of the movie, zombies, is ultimately what holds the movie back. The movie has less scary or gore scenes that you expect in a zombie movie and there are a few moments where you think the writers are dragging us towards the ending. Still, if it is a departure from regular fare that you want, and a fun way to spend a few hours at that, then you won’t go wrong at all with Go Goa Gone!

Palak Paneer Recipe

Ingredients: Butter: 4 tbsp, Oil: 1 tsp, Garlic: 1/2 tsp, Ginger: 1/4 tsp (Paste), Spinach: 2 cups (Boiled), Onion: 1 medium (chopped), Cumin Seeds: 1/4 tsp, All-spice: 1/4 tsp, Black Pepper to taste, Cream: 1/4 cup, Salt to taste, Green Chili: 1, Cottage Cheese: 100 gm, Yogurt: 1/2 cup, Method: Heat butter and oil in a pan then add some cumin seeds and saute for a minute after that Add the garlic and ginger paste, saute for a few minutes. Then add the onions and cook till transparent. Blend the spinach along with the yogurt and green chili.Add the spinach mixture to the onions and cook for 3 to 4 minutes.Now add salt and black pepper and remove from heat.Add cream while stirring continuously until well blended. Now add all-spice. In the end add fried cottage cheese and mix well. Ready to Serve

Kung Pao Chicken with Cashews and Szechuan Pepper 1/2 tbsp cornflour Sauce (combine in a bowl): 1 tbsp soy sauce 1/2 tbsp Chinkiang black vinegar 1 tsp sesame oil 1/2 tsp sugar 1/2 tbsp brown sugar 3 tbsp water Method Combine chicken with marinade and mix well. Refrigerate for 2 hours.

Pour 1/2 tbsp oil in a wok and add the cashews. Turn on the flame on low-medium heat. Slowly stir-fry the cashews until they turn a nutty brown. Dish out and set aside, leaving the oil in the wok.

Add 1/2 tbsp oil to the wok and fry the chicken on high heat until cooked. Dish out and set aside.

Add 1 tbsp oil to the wok and fry the dried chillies until slightly browned, then remove and set aside, leaving the oil in the wok. Add the ginger, followed by garlic and fry for about 1 minute until fragrant. Then, add sauce ingredients, and bring to a boil on high heat.

Add chicken to the wok and toss on high heat until it is well coated with the sauce. Toss in the cashews and chillies and mix through. Finally, turn off the heat and sprinkle with ground szechuan pepper before dishing out onto a serving plate. Serve with steamed jasmine rice.

I would like to share with you my favourite tried-andtested recipe for Kung Pao Chicken (gōng bǎo jī dīng) that is absolutely delicious. This classic Szechuan dish typically comprises marinated chicken cubes tossed in dried red chillies and szechuan peppercorns, along with some cashews or peanuts. Many versions exist for this highly popular dish, and after various attempts, I have finally come up with the perfect recipe that I am quite happy with. It has a nice balance of flavours from the soy, vinegar and brown sugar, and the aromatic szechuan peppers that is characterisic of kung pao chicken really bring out the true and authentic flavours of this dish.

Kung Pao Chicken with Cashews and Szechuan Peppers Ingredients 300g chicken thigh fillets, diced into 3/4 inch cubes 1/4 cup raw cashews 1/3 cup dried red chillies, cut in half (remove seeds to reduce heat if preferred) 2 cloves garlic, sliced thinly 1 inch ginger, shredded thinly 3/4 tsp ground szechuan peppercorns (or to taste) Peanut/vegetable oil for frying Marinade: 1/2 tbsp soy sauce 1/2 tsp sugar 1 tbsp chinese cooking wine
