Of course it has nothing to do with that hateful day of 9/11 and it is just a vocal resemblance between the two dates i.e. 5/11 and 9/11. But still, it does have something to do with the cruel consequences that had an impact over the political and social structure of Pakistan and particularly the safety and security situation of Pakistan in general. Incident of 9/11 killed thousands in America, but unbeknownst to the world, it has adversely affected many more; the aftermath of that bloody date has taken a toll of many thousands in many different ways in Pakistan. The world has responded quite appropriately to the 9/11 incidents but the question is, how far or how effectively has the world responded to the situation created in Pakistan as a direct or indirect consequence of 9/11? No one can deny the fact that internally and externally, Pakistan has suffered and continues to suffer since 9/11. Internally, it is shattered with political and sectarian harsh differences and brutal riots resulting in bloodshed of innocent lives that are lost in thousands. Externally, it has lost its respect and has been left with a tarnished image. Friends of yesterday are foes of today and allies seem to have become enemies. Isolation from the world community it self is one of the hardest punishment that the people of Pakistan have to bear apparently for no fault of their own. Many may find this criticism too harsh to digest but many more who have seen and have closely witnessed the suffering of people of Pakistan will find this criticism too mild in comparison. Survival itself is difficult. A few months back when I was in Pakistan for a short visit, I could sense the gravity of the law and order situation in Karachi and other parts of the country which was at its lowest mark. Each day at least 10 to 15 fatalities occur in Karachi and elsewhere. Such news in the country is a normal news item in local newspapers and TV channels. Reasons may be varied. It could be a case of political rivalry to sectarian differences and from personal enmity to honor killing. I would not
like to go through its painful narration as I have already narrated most of it in one of my earlier articles (refer ‘Once upon a time there was a city named Karachi’ issue no 2 of this newspaper). Economy is yet another sector of grave concern in Pakistan. Cost of living for the common people has sky-rocketed to such an extent that the living or one can say the existence itself has become a day to day problem. People are struggling to find a solution- also on a day to day basis. In other words you can say that common man of Pakistan rises from the bed every

The return of Parwez Musharaf has added much to the existing excitement. Even as I pray for the peaceful transition of power to people I also fear about the possible untoward aftermath. This fear cannot be discarded. Prior to this, people have witnessed elections held under so called free, fair and transparent atmosphere which has only been so on paper whereas the actual situation is totally different on various

Who will lose, who will win, whose efforts will go fruitless and who will hit the bull’s eye are the questions no body can answer right now. All of them have their own manifesto, their own plans for future. Each one has come out with different agenda. All of them are saying, claiming and promising to work for over all benefit of Pakistan and its people. Many of them are habituated of becoming unfaithful to their promises and people have had enough bitter experience of having experienced the

He will bow down to Allah in Sajda-e- Shukrana if all is well and again the next morning he will go through the same concern. I remember a line from a song; ROZ JEETA HUN ROZ MARTA HUN, JAB TEREY SHAHAR SE GUZARTA HUN sadly but truly people of Pakistan are left to plan their living and very existence on day to day basis. Going back to 5/11, since the date has yet to come so I say let’s go back to the prevailing situation and think over the possibilities that may take shape prior to the date – 5/11- the date that is fixed for holding General Elections in Pakistan.

Beyond all that drama, there is the possibility of further extremity of the revengeful reactions! We all have seen that and have suffered grievously from that in the past. We don’t want to go through that agony this time. We only hope and pray that the care taker Government’s machinery will be able to handle the situation effectively. All of us are aware that all expected political parties, their leaders and candidates are and will remain in the fore-front for a long time to come regardless of the ac-

But for now, what the people of Pakistan need to see is that their beloved country is back on track and to see that Pakistan is once again back on the map of the world in its rightful place. Not only with name and fame but also with dignity and true democracy that actually brings peace and prosperity to its people. The need of the hour is that whatever be the outcome of 5/11but it should be effective enough to wipe out all the adversity Pakistan and its people have suffered in the aftermath of bloodshed of 9/11.

People keep hearing and reading about films nowadays competing to reach the 100Cr (Indian Rupees) mark and in how many days has it reached that. Bollywood has been making films for over 100 years and it is also celebrating 100 years of the Indian film industry, so why is it now that the films’ success is now measured by the revenue that it makes? Previously we have had hit films made by established film makers like Mehboob Khan, Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy and Guru Dutt to name just a few. The success of all their films and the films made during that era was measured at the box office by the longevity rather than the collections. I remember special posters being made for films completing 25 weeks – SILVER JUBILEE or 50 weeks – GOLDEN JUBILEE or 75 weeks – PLATINUM JUBILEE or 100 weeks – DIAMOND JUBILEE. There were special parties thrown to celebrate these special moments and it was a great feeling when the films would complete these landmarks. Not only were special posters printed but the entire cast and crew received special trophies to mark the occasion. If we go by the revenue earned then I would like to mention Sholay that made three times the money that Mehboob Khan’s MUGHAL-E-AZAM made and then the film MAINE PYAR KIYA made four times that revenue. What has impacted the longevity of films? The coming in of TV, Internet and other media and the most crippling factor of PIRACY has hit the longevity of films in the theaters. Hence, nowadays the success of the films is limited to the OPENING DAY and the FIRST THREE DAY response to the film and revenue generated during that period. This method of measuring the success of a film has attracted a lot of criticism from various film critics and the senior members of the Film Industry. Since the year 2008 films have been crossing the 1 Billion Rupee mark consistently with the first being GHAJNI and then there has been no looking back. Also in the years that have gone by we have seen a lot of sequels of the films that have been highly successful like DHOOM and GOLMAAL and so far these have made more money than their originals. Not only are they making sequels of the films that have been recently successful but now there is a flood of films that were yesteryear hits like DON, GOLMAAL (Faroque Sheikh), ZANJEER, HIMMATWALA to name a few. There have been about 36 films that have reached the 100 cr mark since the year 2006, however in the recent past; suddenly we have seen a flood of these. Also, there are a host of other reasons that have caused the sudden spurt in the revenue earnings of the films. The number of prints and the number of theaters that the films are released at has increased tremendously. Any new film with a major star cast has about 2500 to 3000 prints released worldwide, so also the release of films in the interior parts of India has increased widely. Marketing the film has reached a new high. Lot of publicity stunts are done by various proms being released from time to time, the Stars make appearances at various TV shows and Award Nites in order to promote the film. So does it mean that the films that do not touch the 100 cr mark are bad films ??? or the public did not like them ??? Let’s not go very far back – lets talk about the films that have been released in the recent past and have not touched the 100 cr mark but have been successful with the audiences and also won quite a number of awards. Among them would be films like – PAAN SINGH TOMAR, KAHANI, GANGS OF WASSEYPUR, BAND BAAJA BAARAT and the latest being JOLLY LLB. All these films have been very successful at the box office but have not touched the 100 cr mark, they have won awards in several departments so would you say that these are not successful films ??? So now comes the question – HOW DOES ONE JUDGE THE SUCCESS OF THE FILM – SHOULD IT BE BY THE MONEY IT COLLECTS?? OR BY NUMBER OF AWARDS IT COLLECTS ?? OR BY THE APPLAUSE OF THE AUDIENCE?? MUSHARRAF returns per promise KARACHI - Former president and army chief Pervez Musharraf on Sunday ended nearly four years of self-exile by flying to Karachi despite death threats, and said he would face all challenges that lay ahead. Musharraf landed at Jinnah International Airport via a chartered Emirates flight from Dubai. Talking to reporters inside the aircraft, a smiling Musharraf said, “It is a very emotional moment. I’m going back after four years.” “There are security challenges, legal challenges and political challenges but I will face them,” said Musharraf, clad in a white shalwar kameez, as he made his way out of the aircraft. “I am feeling concerned about the unknown... there are a lot of unknown factors of terrorism and extremism, unknown factors of legal issues, of how I will be perform (in the elections),” he said. A TV channel reported that military authorities, through the Defence Ministry, had sent a letter to the Interior Ministry to provide security to the former president. Musharraf’s planned press conference at the airport was cancelled and would be held later in the week in Islamabad. Security and party officials confirmed that the former president had,
after consultations with his All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) executive members inside the terminal, decided to hold a press conference in Punjab on Wednesday. “Security officials advised Musharraf after his arrival that he should not hold a press conference, neither try to address a rally because they wanted to take him from the airport to his destination as soon, and as discreetly as possible due to high security risks,” a party member said. He is expected to stay in Karachi for two days before going to Islamabad. Security at the airport was tight in the wake of threats to Musharraf’s life from the Pakistani Taliban. Hundreds of police and paramilitary officials were present inside and outside the airport to provide security cover to the former president. Sniffer dogs and scanners were used to check all incoming and outgoing vehicles and people at the airport. Hours before his return, authorities in Karachi cancelled permission for a meeting that was to be addressed by Musharraf at a ground near the mausoleum of Mohammad Ali Jinnah. Sindh Police spokesman SSP Imran Shaukat said the no-objection certificate for the public meeting
to be addressed by Musharraf had been withdrawn due to “serious security threats” to the former president. The police had officially informed Musharraf’s party, the APML, about the decision, he said. “The APML has agreed to cancel the public meeting,” he added. Addressing the crowd which had gathered to welcome him at the airport, Musharraf said he had come to Pakistan as promised, despite all threats. He said he was not afraid of anyone except the Almighty. He said he was a practicing Muslim, like many others and rejected all judgements over his character. The former president said the Pakistan that he had left four years ago had disappeared, adding that it hurt him to witness poverty, unemployment and lawlessness in the country where the masses were being crushed. He claimed he came back for the masses and will give them the Pakistan he had left behind. He appealed to the people of Karachi to help restore peace to the city of lights. ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardri has welcomed the nomination of Justice Mir Hazar Khan Khoso as the caretaker Prime Minister by the Election Commission of Pakistan today. Senator Farhatullah Babar quoted the President as saying that the nomination of Mir Hazar Khan Khoso by the ECP was a culmination of a part of the constitutional process to ensure free and fair elections and will be welcomed by all across the political divide. The President said that the forthcoming general elections under a caretaker neutral set up selected under the constitutional process and an independent and empowered election Commission duly empowered by the Parliament for the first time in the country’s history was a very significant and welcome development that should help in banishing the specter of manipulate power transfer. KHOSO handed the country’s reins The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Sunday appointed Mir Hazar Khan Khoso, a retired judge, as caretaker prime minister of Pakistan
ISLAMABAD - Khoso belongs to Jaffarabad district of Balochistan and would take oath of his office today (Monday) at 1300 hours from President Asif Ali Zardari. The former judge enjoys good reputation for his honesty as there are no corruption charges against him, though opposition parties consider him loyal to the Pakistan People’s Party and criticised him for taking oath under the PCO during the tenure of former president General Zaiul Haq. “We reviewed profiles of all names forwarded by parliamentary committee in detail and finally picked Justice (r) Khoso for the slot of caretaker prime minister,” Chief Election Commission Fakhruddin G Ebrahim told reporters while announcing the
caretaker PM’s name. Khoso’s name was proposed by the Pakistan People’s Party. The CEC said five-member commission appointed Mir Hazar Khan Khoso as prime minister with majority of votes, as only member from Punjab Justice (r) Riaz Kiyani opposed the same, as he was in favour of opposition nominee Justice (r) Nasir Aslam Zahid. Khoso, 84, graduated from University of Sindh in 1954 and passed LLB in 1956 from Karachi University. Later in 1977, he was appointed additional judge of the Balochistan High Court and was then given a permanent seat in 1987. He served as Balochistan High Court chief justice for two years from December 1989 to September 1991. He also served
as the chief judge of Federal Shariat Court. Khoso undertook his last political assignment back in 1991, when he served as the acting governor of Balochistan for three months. On Sunday, the second day of deliberations of the Election Commission, the commission gave verdict in favour of Justice (r) Khoso. The commission reviewed profiles of all four nominees- two each from the former PPP government and the opposition. The government had proposed the names of former State Bank governor Dr Ishrat Hussain and Mir Hazar Khan Khoso, while the opposition suggested the names of Justice (r) Nasir Aslam Zahid and Sindhi nationalist leader Rasul Bakhsh Palejo for the slot
of caretaker prime minister. The matter of appointment of caretaker prime minister was referred to the ECP on Friday night after the prime minister and leader of the opposition as well as the parliamentary committee failed to achieve consensus. Before his appointment as the country’s chief executive, Khoso was serving as the chairman of Balochistan Zakat Council. Maiden media briefing: In the briefing after his nomination as prime minister, prime minister-elect Khoso said there was no question of delaying the polls. To a question on the possible situation in which election had to be postponed, he said: “Let me make it clear that elections will be held on time, so the question of delaying elections makes no sense,” he said. Khoso said his top priority was to hold free, fair and transparent elections. He said he would extend his full support to the ECP. To a query, he said his cabinet would comprise 10 to 12 ministers. He said, “Holding election, law and order and economic condition are the major challenges before me.” To another question regarding the deteriorating law and order in the country, he said maintaining law and order was a provincial subject, but he would provide full support to provinces in this regard. Khoso added that he would soon hold a meeting with provincial chief executives. Surprising many, the newly-appointed prime minister said that he did not the know names of provincial governors, except that of Balochistan Governor Nawabazada Zulfiqar Magsi. The name of the caretaker prime minister was decided in the second ECP sitting on Sunday, as the previous deliberations on Saturday had ended indecisively owing to the absence of Sindh member Justice (r) Muhammad Roshan. President Asif Ali Zardri welcomed the nomination of Justice (r) Khoso as the caretaker prime minister. PM-headed panel for CAG selection mooted Eminent retired bureaucrats and members of the Forum of Retired Officers of Indian Audit and Accounts Service have demanded the creation of a selection committee headed by Prime Minister to select the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India. The term of current CAG Vinod Rai ends in May. In a memorandum to President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, they have argued that need of the hour was a “transparent, institutionalised selection mechanism” for the appointment of the next CAG. They have contended that when such a committee procedure had been adopted for the selection of the Chief Vigilance Commissioner and the National Human Rights Commission Chairman, the same procedure should be applied for the selection of the CAG. The proposed selection committee should comprise the

Amid a growing clamour for his clemency, the 53-year-old Bollywood actor said, “All I can tell you is I have not applied for pardon.” “There are many other people who deserve pardon. I want to tell with folded hands to the media, the honourable citizens of the country that when I am not going for pardon then there can be no debate about it,” said Mr. Dutt, who broke down during his interaction with the press in Mumbai. The actor, who has been handed down five years imprisonment by the Supreme Court in the 1993
Mumbai serial blasts case, said he had the highest respect for the apex court and will abide by all terms and conditions put forth by it. “The honourable Supreme Court has given me time to surrender and I will surrender in that time,” he said as sister and MP Priya Dutt comforted him. 9 Moderate quake rattles Trinidad & Tobago
A moderate earthquake has rattled Trinidad & Tobago, causing some alarm but no reported damage or injuries. The US Geological Survey says the magnitude-4.8 quake struck early Sunday and was centred some 81 kilometres northeast of Roxborough, an eastern town on the tourism-dependent island of Tobago. It was also felt on the Caribbean country of Barbados. Its epicentre was about 46 kilometres below the surface.
Sectarian clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in Myanmar spread to at least two other towns in the country’s heartland over the weekend, undermining government efforts to quash an eruption of violence that has killed dozens of people and displaced 10,000 more.
Cyprus secures bailout, avoids bankruptcy
Buddhists-Muslims violence spreads in Myanmar President Thein Sein declared a state of emergency in the region on Friday and deployed army troops to the worst hit city, Meikhtila. But even as soldiers were able to impose order there after several days of anarchy that saw armed Buddhists torch the city’s Muslim quarters, unrest was reported in two other towns to the south. Late Sunday, state television said that mobs burned down a mosque and 50 homes on Saturday in Yamethin, about 64 kilometres from Meikhtila, and another mosque and several buildings were also set ablaze in Lewei, further south near the capital, Naypyitaw. The government has put the total death toll at 32, and authorities say they have detained at least 35 people allegedly involved in arson and violence in the region. The spread of violence is posing major challenged to stability as Thein Sein’s administration. Two similar episodes rocked western Rakhine state last year, pitting ethnic Rakhine Buddhists against Rohingya Muslims who are widely denigrated as illegal migrants from Bangladesh and are denied passports as a result. The Muslim population of central Myanmar, by contrast, is mostly of Indian origin and does not face the same questions over nationality. Analysts say the emergence of sectarian conflict here is a worrying development, one that indicates violent anti-Muslim sen-
timent has spread unabated into the country’s heartland. Muslims make up about four per cent of the predominantly Buddhist country’s roughly 60 million people. The bloodshed “shows that inter-communal tensions in Myanmar are not just limited to the Rakhine and Rohingya in northern Rakhine state,” said Jim Della-Giacoma of the International Crisis Group. “Myanmar is a country with dozens of localized fault lines and grievances that were papered over during the authoritarian years that we are just beginning to see and understand. It is a paradox of transitions that greater freedom does allows these local conflicts to resurface.” “If a democratic state is the nation’s goal, they need to find a place for all its people as equal citizens,” Della-Mr. Giacoma said. “Given the country’s history, it won’t be easy.” On Sunday, Vijay Nambiar, the U.N. secretary-general’s special adviser on Myanmar, toured Meikhtila and called on the government to punish those responsible. Mr. Nambiar said he was encouraged to learn that some individuals in both communities had bravely helped each other and that religious leaders were now advocating peace. He said the people he spoke to believe the violence “was the work of outsiders,” but he gave no details. “There is a certain degree of fear and anxiety among the
people, but there is no hatred,” Mr. Nambiar said after visiting both groups on Sunday and promising the United Nations would provide as much help as it can to get the city back on its feet. “They feel a sense of community and that it is a very good thing because they have worked together and lived together.” But he added — “It is important to catch the perpetrators. It is important that they be caught and punished.” In Meikthila, at least five mosques were set ablaze from Wednesday to Friday. The majority of homes and shops burned in the city also belonged to Muslims, and most of the displaced are Muslim. Dozens of corpses were piled in the streets, some of them charred beyond recognition. During his trip, Mr. Nambiar visited some of the thousands of Muslim residents at a city stadium, where they have huddled since fleeing their homes. He later visited around 100 Buddhists at a local monastery who have also been displaced. “The city is calm and some shops have reopened, but many still live in fear. Some still dare not return to their homes,” said Win Htein, an opposition lawmaker from the city. Myanma Ahlin, a state-run newspaper, carried a statement from Buddhist, Muslim, Christian and Hindu leaders expressing sorrow for the loss of life and property
and calling on Buddhist monks to help ease tensions. “We would like to call upon the government to provide sufficient security and to protect the displaced people and to investigate and take legal measures as urgently as possible,” the statement from the Interfaith Friendship Organization said. Muslims, who make up about 30 per cent of Meikhtila’s 100,000 inhabitants, have stayed off the streets since their shops and homes were burned and Buddhist mobs armed with machetes and swords began roaming the city. Little appeared to be left of some palm tree-lined neighbourhoods, where the legs of victims could be seen poking out from smouldering masses of twisted debris and ash. Broken glass, charred cars and motorcycles and overturned tables littered roads beside rows of burned-out homes and shops, evidence of the widespread chaos that swept the town. Chaos began Wednesday after an argument broke out between a Muslim gold shop owner and his Buddhist customers. Once news spread that a Muslim man had killed a Buddhist monk, Buddhist mobs rampaged through a Muslim neighbourhood and the situation quickly spiralled out of control. tral Bank had threatened to cut crucial emergency assistance to the country’s banks by Tuesday without an agreement. The finance ministers of the 17-nation eurozone accepted the plan reached in 10 hours of negotiations, the diplomats said. They spoke on condition of anonymity pending the official announcement. Under the plan, Cyprus’ second-largest bank, Laiki, will be restructured and holders of bank deposits of more than 100,000 euros will have to take losses.

A jigsaw puzzle can be said to be correctly solved only when all the pieces are put into their right places; however when you set out to put the puzzle together, you have no idea where to begin. One usually begins blindly, starting out on assumptions. An EVENT MANAGER would also start out like that, feeling his way around through trial and error, learning all the time. Every event being a lesson in itself. Hats off to Rehan Siddiqi who has the courage to organize events on such a large scale, one after the other. Audiences will not forget the wonderful experience they’ve enjoyed. The main singer, is considered the ‘jewel in the crown, the ‘abhushan’; the analogy was brought to life as one experienced ADNAN SAMI in all his glory at the just concluded concert at the Arena Theatre, Houston. Alone in the lime-light (literally) he kept the crowd of over 20,000 mesmerized. The cheering audience, that couldn’t have enough of him, created a magical evening on Saturday, the 23rd of March. REHAN SID-
DIQI was successful in luring Adnan back to Houston after a long gap of eight years, - it was in 2005 that he was last here. Referring to Rehaan’s cajoling to come perform here, Adnan called it the ‘Big Guy Reference’. It was a good show: entertaining, enthralling, enticing, exciting… Adnan lived up to the promise he made to the audience of singing all requested songs, he filled each one’s heart with a sense of fulfillment. One can hear recordings of their favorite songs as many times as one wishes, however it is a different feeling altogether to hear the original singer sing it LIVE FOR YOU. Performing on stage, Adnan sounds just as he does on his records; the purity of the sound, the energy of his personality, the accompanying music, everything put together, it was an experience, a memory that one would treasure all of one’s life. There’s something extra special that he brings into each show that is completely different, completely original and that’s what makes attending his concerts so special. It’s
like a dance that he and the audience are performing together, keeping step, creating the special intimacy and fully losing themselves into each other. Being his own pianist he can offer that something special. He also enjoys writing his own lyrics and composing his own music, thus he loses himself completely into all aspects of the song. The ongoing interaction that he had with his audience kept both the artists and the audience fully engaged in the moment. Expounding upon his life’s journey, from being fat as fat can be, to a slim, handsome, healthy, vibrant personality that he is now, Adnan joked, “I alone was a group photograph; it was a nightmare, I couldn't find my size clothes that I could buy. My family had to have a tailor come over to measure me, who made fun of me. Though it was in good spirit, it hurt. In fact, Doctors told me that if I did not lose weight, I may lose my life. It was really hard on me, so at one time I said to myself, ‘enough is enough’.” Reiterating his faith in the almighty which then helps one to have faith in one’s own
efforts, Adnan continued, “If you truly want to do something then look up and ask God: he truly gives you answers”. That comment brought tears to many eyes amongst the audience. Adnan gives the credit of losing 300 lbs to the encouragement from his audience. They appreciated his slimmer look and encouraged him to continue to lose weight. In all seriousness, Adnan took a dig at the soda manufacturers, because at one time, he just drank soda all the time (that’s how he added all the empty calories to his ever thickening frame). He said, “Water has zero calories, thank God for WATER.” That’s all he drinks now. Adnan’s love and respect for his band was obvious throughout the show; he knows that their flexibility and adaptability allow him to be responsive to the audience’s moods. He introduced each member of his band and allowed them to demonstrate the music that their particular instrument creates. The audience was in raptures. All in all, a memorable evening.

The Diwali celebration will once again be at an open air stadium in the late evening with a focus on bringing alive the religious fervor of the victory of the good over the evil. Last year during the Diwali celebration at the Skeeter’s stadium in Sugar Land, they had the MahaAarti (the great prayer)., Diyas were handed out to the audience so everybody could engage at a personal level in the strengthening of the intention to fight evil. Sunil and Sandhya feel the satisfaction of contributing to upholding our cultural traditions and passing these on to the forthcoming generations. Sandhya’s message to the readers is to just come out to participate. They are striving to bring all the fun and festivities at a minimal cost to the public, so the least the people can do is to make the effort to come, participate and add to the energy. I felt the power that a couple can bring forward into the world when they are aligned in their vision of life. Rehan Siddiqi of HumTum Radio is all set to offer unforgettable memories to the South Asian community of Greater Houston. Great artists from the musical world of South Asia are being brought across the globe, not only to entertain but to keep alive a piece of our cultural heritage. My first impression on meeting Rehan was the feeling of being enveloped in positive energy; in fact the premises of HumTum Radio seemed to hum with a feeling of excitement and enthusiasm. The momentum that is being built up seems to be enveloping the south Asian community in the city. You tune into the AM radio channels, you may be driving across the city and you view these huge bill boards with the photos of Adnan Sami or Rahat Fatehali Khan, you leaf through the local newspapers, every media platform has been used to promote these upcoming events. Rehan shared that he has discovered the key to organizing successful events – a combination of the right artists, best marketing and the most memorable experience for the people who
come to these shows. The 24/7 contact that the radio has with the local community gives him a good insight about what the community likes and also what it dislikes. He uses this information to his advantage when planning for events. The people of Houston can look forward to great entertainment at these upcoming shows. Alongside enjoying great soul stirring live fusion of traditional and modern music and singing, you will be treated to a royal welcome with roses and then some fireworks. For Rehan, events are about creating happiness, bringing smiles of satisfaction on the face of the artists as well as the audience. “I want to give everybody a TREAT at my events”, says Rehan. “What is the source of your energy?” I asked. He reflected for a while and then shared something very profound. I think even he seemed to be touched by his own reflection. He said, “You may do everything that is required of you for ensuring success in your life, yet it is the family environment that deeply impacts you. The support, encouragement and motivation that I receive from my family members makes me feel confident and keep me happy.” Wise words indeed!
His career in the entertainment industry goes back many years. As a young boy of fourteen, he had hosted an event as a DJ for a gathering of 250 people; slowly and steadily, he has been charting his way. Living in the west, he has an opportunity to learn ‘Best Practices’ from the Western Entertainment Industry. ‘PERFECTION’, that’s his goal in everything he does. He throws himself completely into everything he undertakes in his life and then pulls out all stops and keeps going till he feels completely satisfied within his own heart. It is no small feat to have the great names in the entertainment industry insist on coming back to do shows with the same promoter, Rehan in this case, over and over again. Once an artist comes under Rehan’s banner, they choose to come back exclusively with him, Rehan was the first promoter in the country who brought over 8000 people for Rahat in 2011

Pankaj Udhas said that Rehan is the most amazing promoter he has ever toured with and will only come back with his banner. Rehan also brought the first big South Asian event at Sugarland stadium with its capacity for 8000 people, but actual numbers who attended the show was 10,000. Many more wanted to come but could not get in as tickets were all sold out. Rehan Siddiqi is the most refined promoter, his shows have class and when shows have his name, there is a guarantee that these will be sold out events in Houston even if they are back to back. Rehan believes in supporting the good work being done by other organizations as well. When River Stone, in Fort Bend County, conducted a poll, wherein the residents had to vote for their favorite of the five celebrities living in the
area, Rehaan was the winner. The award of $5000 that he won was given to the Fort Bend Education Foundation. It was indeed a treat to meet somebody who has made his way up in this part of the world, facing the same challenges that all of us have. Rehan is all praise for City360 Houston’s managing partner, Mr. Saqib Rana, for launching this newspaper. He is a great fan of Saqib’s art work and is confident that the people of Houston are in for a visual treat. We wish Rehan all the very best for all his future ventures. ‘A Big Star Show’, most definitely in 2013, that’s what he is working on bringing to the people of Houston. Farah Mahmood Tell us a bit about yourself! Not sure where to start, but here goes! I was born in Pakistan. My father was a doctor, and we moved to Saudi Arabia when I was very young, and stayed there until I was 18, when we moved back to Pakistan. After getting married, I moved to London with my husband, and very soon after that to Dubai. I am blessed with four beautiful children, 2 boys and 2 girls. Despite having had a very privileged upbringing and a pampered life after marriage, this never prevented me from staying very grounded, and being keen to learn and excel, both personally and professionally. In Dubai, I got into health and fitness, nutrition and self-improvement in a big way. I also landed a job as an interior designer, and managed some major hotel design projects for local companies in Dubai. When we decided to focus more on the children’s education, we decided to move to Canada. Here, I have become a certified personal trainer and a qualified image consultant, and become an expert in anti-ageing and nutrition. I am in the planning stages of opening an image and fitness studio for women in Toronto. How did you hear about the Mrs. Pakistan World? Through an internet search. How do you feel about winning the title? I feel it is an honour, and also that it gives me a wonderful opportunity to communicate what I feel defines the mature Pakistani woman of today, whilst trying my best to remove some of the stigma attached to such titles. How does your family feel about the win? My whole family has been extremely supportive. From my husband, who has always encouraged me to follow my dreams, through my kids and my siblings, everyone feels this is something that I should do and do to a high
standard. There is a sense that I was always destined to do something like this, as I have always enjoyed the opportunity to get exposure and communicate myself to the outside world. So what are your plans for the pageant? Well, I have an image in mind that I would like to project, and at the same time, I hope to be a positive role model for other Pakistani women. I want to show that you can be in this kind of business, and yet be a thinking person who is modest, decent and hardworking, behaves in a dignified fashion and does not compromise many of the traditions that makes our country what it is. What is your main advice for Pakistani women? That we can be a collective force to be reckoned with in the outside world. Many Islamic countries have taken the step of empowering women to great effect, and Pakistan loses out while women`s literacy and education rates are so low – in effect, we are only half as successful as we could do if half of the people are not contributing positively to our development. So my advice would be, do not accept the status quo, and, wherever you are and whatever your circumstances, do not give up the fight for improvement. If every woman improves her situation by a little, that is collectively a whole lot of improving! I would also like to convey that age is just a number: it is never too late to have ambitions and work towards achieving them. Never give up! Work is biggest cause of stress Work is the biggest cause of stress in people’s lives with one in three people (34%) saying their work life was either very or quite stressful, research from Mind has found. The survey of over 2,000 people revealed that the main cause for workplace stress was frustration with poor management and that work was regarded as more stressful than debt or financial problems (30%) or health issues (17%). The second most stressful factor of work for one in four (26%) people was excessive workload, followed closely by lack of support from managers (25%) and unrealistic targets (25%). As a result of this, one in five respondents (19%) said they took a day off sick due to stress, but 90% of those people cited a different reason for their absence, suggesting a culture of fear around revealing mental health issues. One in five (19%) people felt they couldn't tell their boss if they were overly stressed. In addition, one in 10 (9%) had resigned from a job due to stress and a quarter had considered resigning due to work pressure. Furthermore, of the 22% of those surveyed who had a diagnosed mental health problem, just under half (10%) had actually told their boss about the diagnosis. Mind chief executive Paul Farmer said: "Work related mental health problems are an issue too important for businesses to ignore. We know that right now, one in six workers are experiencing depression, stress or anxiety and yet our survey tells us that most managers don't feel they have had enough training or guidance to support them. "Improving mental wellbeing in the workplace doesn't have to cost a lot. Our research shows that people whose organisations offered flexible working hours and generous annual leave said such measures supported their mental wellbeing. Florida native Mohawk Gaz uses spray paint to turn his head into a truly unmissable advertising billboards for friends and businesses. 31-year-old Mohawk Gaz - real name Gasmy Joseph from Pompano Beach, Florida, has been a fan of the Mohawk for many years, but it was only a year ago that he discovered the true potential of his outrageous hairdo. A buddy had asked Gaz to spread the word about his birthday party, and suddenly a light bulb went off in his head - why not advertise the event on his hairdo for everyone to see? The idea was a huge success, and he has been spray-painting his Mohawk with all kinds of designs ever since. He has been offering his head as advertising space to friends who needed promotion, and has even been contacted by small businesses. A health-food catering company called Deliver Lean sent Mohawk Gaz to Miami Heat and Florida Panthers games with its logo painted on his hair and was very pleased with the results. ”It’s been tremendous marketing,” the company’s founder said. “It’s great exposure, and it’s never been done before.” To get his unusual business off the ground, Mohawk Gaz set up a website featuring photos of his best works, and created colorful flyers he hands out everywhere he goes. But it isn’t just about the money with this guy. The mind-blowing feats of the group were captured by Mr Rogers, from Utah, US, who risks his own life while photographing the incredible moments of bravery. He said: ‘On a scale of one to ten, highlining is actually pretty safe - but when you do it without a leash, or with only an ankle leash like Andy, the danger level can reach nine or higher. We’re very experienced so like to think the risk is fairly low but we all know the consequences are very high - instant death in the case of a fall freesoloing or with the ankle leash slipping off.’ He said Mr Lewis had to pull himself back onto the line after dangling upside down. He said: ‘To get back up from hanging on the leash Andy had to reach up, grab the leash, and climb up to the line which is pretty difficult and requires a lot of practice and upper body strength. But I have known these guys for years and they are the best out there - they have some amazing skills and the massive Brazilian slacklining community was loving every minute of it. It’s great to travel around the world and quite literally hang out with your friends meeting new people and watching how they react to you. These were some of the most spectacular surroundings we have seen and being so high above the city I doubt people could even see what we were getting up to.’–DM
THAT’S SMASHING A DRIVER is said to be seriously ill after a horrific accident left his sports car hanging out of the ground floor window of a house. The three people inside the suburban home in Lowestoft, Suffolk, escaped uninjured when the red Audi TT slammed into it shortly before 2am this morning. The driver, believed to be in his 20s, was removed from the car and taken to a nearby hospital with serious head injuries. He was later transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. Neighbour Keith Shales told the BBC: “When I got there and saw the car through the hole in the hedge I thought that looks serious. I’ve seen photos of cars going into people’s houses before but from the pavement, through the bushes and the cars behind it - it was like a launch pad - it must have been for him to get that high. I reckon he must be about four feet off the ground, I’ve never seen anything like it.” Engineers were sent to the scene to conduct safety inspections on the house. Sergeant Bob Patterson, of Suffolk Police, said: “Collision investigators will be at the scene today as we try to ascertain exactly what has occurred. –TS

Del Potro out of Miami; Djokovic through MIAMI - Fifth seed Juan Martin Del Potro suffered a surprise early exit at the ATP & WTA Sony Open on Friday night. He lost to Tobias Kamke in a rain-interrupted second-round encounter in Miami. The world number seven, playing in his first match at this year's tournament after being handed a first-round bye, crumbled after failing to convert two set points at 5-2 in the first set. The German dominated the second set when play resumed following the weather delay and ran out a 7-6 (7/5) 6-1 winner to reach round three of a Masters 1000 event for the first time in his career. "I saved two set points at 5 2 and somehow I came back in that set and had the chance

When forced into situations from which they have to respond unconventionally, they struggle - an indication that the evolution into a complete unit is still, as Gary Kirsten would put it, in process. For Pakistan, the picture may not be that big. They are more likely to be focused on the immediate goal of leaving this tour with enough to be able to call it a success. Misbahul-Haq indicated at the very beginning that he expected the Test phase to be difficult but the limited-overs contests to be the area in which Pakistan could push South Africa and even topple them over. So far, they have. They've exposed the hosts' obvious weaknesses and demonstrated some of their own major strengths. They will want one more big effort to underline those and there would be no better place to that than in the decider. Instead of one player, it will be South Africa's collective mental strength under scrutiny as they find themselves in a must-win situation. Understandably, it is not a major tournament knockout game and it may have absolutely no bearing on one, but is still a test of character more than it is one of skill and if South Africa have lacked in either department, it is the first. The team will have to take responsibility as a whole and watching how they
work together in trying to win the series will be more important than any individual brilliance. Similarly, Pakistan's big match temperament will be challenged. Twice, they have needed to come back in the rubber and twice they have. Both times, they've got the bit between their teeth early. If that happens again, they are likely to run away with it. If it doesn't, they will have to be up to clambering their way out of trouble. Shahid Afridi showed how to do it at the Wanderers but it may take more than one firework to light up the contest. JADEJA, PUJARA take India to historic 4-0 The final day of the series, in Delhi, resembled one of those when a crazy colourful storm from Rajasthan visits the capital. While the storm is there, it is all encompassing, and promises apocalypse. Soon, though, it blows over, and you can't tell it had been there. For about the first 200 minutes of the day, it was mayhem: spiteful spin, altercations, posturing, surprises, send-offs and some statesmanship. Twelve wickets fell for 170 runs, Nathan Lyon and Ravindra Jadeja registered their personal bests, Peter Siddle became the first No. 9 to score two fifties in a Test, but India got through the 155-run chase with shockingly consummate ease to win four matches in a series for the first time in their Test history. Cheteshwar Pujara, opening the innings in the absence of Shikhar Dhawan and fighting a finger injury of his own, led the chase with his second fifty - 82 off 92 - which on this pitch must rank alongside one of his double-centuries. It might have been made to look simple, but it wasn't always thus. Lyon, who had removed Ishant
Sharma and Pragyan Ojha with the last two deliveries of India's first innings, nearly had his hattrick. M Vijay charged at him first ball of the innings, but the ball turned way down the leg side, and Matthew Wade missed the half chance. In the next over, Pujara survived a close lbw shout, with a soft outside edge helping him. In the next over, Vijay was bowled while reverse-sweeping. That was the closest Australia came to having a chance. Pujara and Kohli batted as if the events of the past two-anda-half days didn't matter at all, as if the bunsen had lost all its fire. Which it hadn't; it was just clear-minded decisive batting on a spitter, making full use of every loose ball on offer. There were drives, there were ramps, there were sweeps. From Australia there were loose balls, overthrows and misfields. A minor blip interrupted India's progress as three wickets fell for five runs to reduce India to 128 for 4, a period during which Sachin Tendulkar failed in possibly his last Test innings at home. Pujara, though, refused
to acknowledge all this, bringing India level with three successive fours, and let MS Dhoni, whose grey beard bears the traces of two previous whitewashes of India, finish the rest. Enough of this drive on a clear sunny day. Back to the storm. Back to when there were skirmishes even before teams had crossed the rope. Over who should set foot on the field of play first. That resolved, Australia took the last two wickets in no time, restricting India's lead to 10. With an assured and aggressive innings, Ed Cowan showed it was probably not the best move after all to demote him. He capitalised on every loose delivery, and hit five fours in his 24, one of them a superb drive through midwicket after stepping down to Jadeja. All hell broke loose at the other end, though. Jadeja trapped Warner with a dart, and the Indian fielders let rip with a choreographed and a long send-off. Warner has been the sledger-in-chief from Australia, and has been in the ear of the Indian batsmen since the start of the second innings of the match. There is also a previous to this
from the time India toured Australia, so that wicket would have brought Virat Kohli, in particular, and Jadeja natural and massive relief, and they just let it show. The umpires, though, spoke to Tendulkar, who in turn, tapped Jadeja's shoulder a bit. With seemingly an appeal every ball, an explosion off the pitch every second, and a sledge every third, the umpires were under intense pressure. Amid some incredible calls, Aleem Dar erred with the Phillip Hughes lbw, with R Ashwin's offbreak turning past off. It was all Dhoni after that. First through Jadeja, a player he has backed when few did. Jadeja removed Cowan before lunch, and Steven Smith and Mitchell Johnson just after. The latter strikes were crucial as Smith and Wade had added 41 for the sixth wicket. His first ball after the break was a slider that Smith left alone to hit his off stump. The next turned through the gate and knocked Johnson's middle stump over. Australia 94 for 7. Siddle not only survived the hat-trick ball, he - much like Pujara - seemed to have brought his own pitch to bat on. He went
on a sensational counterattack, charging down to the spinners and clearing mid-off, and cover when mid-off was sent back, regularly. He looked as comfortable as any specialist batsman did on this track. Around him, though, Dhoni put on an exhibition too. Wade advanced to Ojha, was beaten by the dip, edged it onto the top part of his pad, and as the ball died to his right, Dhoni changed direction and not only completed a one-handed take, he proceeded to break the stumps just in case the umpire had missed the edge. Siddle was not too bedazzled. His assault continued. Back to Dhoni then. He gambled. He brought Ishant on. The first nine balls Ishant bowled went for 12 runs. With James Pattinson, Siddle had now added 35 for the ninth wicket to take the score to 157. Then Ishant went round the stumps, and got one to reverse through Pattinson's gate. Dhoni had worked again. Fittingly, as with the bat, he ended the innings with a stumping off a ball that could have been called a wide had it been bowled with restrictive intent.
