The theme this year is GREEN HOLI. Not just because Green is the color of 2013, but because Masala Radio would like everyone to focus on an environmentally friendly event, beginning with biodegradable colours, dÊcor, and paper products. Of course, the event will still feature color-powder throwing frenzy, amazing Indian Classical and Bollywood Entertainment, Kids Rides, and ceremonial HOLI Pragitya (HOLI Bonfire Lighting). The festival will be teaming with Indian merchandise and delicious street food booths. New this year will be a chariot porcessions from the stage to the HOLI Pragitya, and characters representing Vishnu, Prahlad, and Hollika, as well as the iconic King Hiranyakashipu on stilts. HOLI is a religious festival from India, celebrating the triumph of Good over Evil. According to the ancient texts, the evil King Hiranyakashipu demanded that all bow to him as God. His own son Prahlad, however, refused, as he was a devotee of Vishnu (the Preserver in the Hindu Divine Trinity). The King demanded his daughter Holika (who had the power to burn anyone she touched) to embrace Prahlad and destroy him in fire. Vishnu intervened and she burned instead, and Prahlad emerged unscathed. Thus, every year on the anniversary of this miracle, Indians celebrate the burning of Holika with the HOLI bonfire. HOLI celebrations include music, dance, food, and the throwing of colored powder. So wear white (something you are not attached to!), and come enjoy HOLI 2013! For details visit houstonholi.com or call 281-277-MUSIC (6874). Everyone is invited, all faiths are welcome to celebrate as one community. Free kids rides, this year the new ride is BUNJEE JUMPING. For the Rain Dance we have rain machine used in films. SO, BLOCK YOUR CALANDERS FOR 24TH MARCH; COME ONE COME ALL AND ENJOY YOURSELVES TO YOUR HEART’S CONTENT.

HOUSTON BASANT

Kites fill the sky! Traditionally Basant is a celebration to bid farewell to winter and to welcome spring. In Houston, Basant is celebrated in the month of March. Houstonians prepare for the big event with a lot of enthusiasm and zeal. Everyone wears yellow outfits and dances along to the beat of Dhole. Beautiful kites of all shapes and sizes rhythmically dance in the sky. At a glance it seems like the sky has been graciously kite painted. Women traditionally wear “Chooridar” pajamas, Saris, Jeans, Trousers, and Ghararars all in various shades of yellow. Children in the Basant are full of smiles; their faces painted with different types of kites in bright colors. Their excitement know no bounds. Children aged 5-10 enjoy dancing on the stage. Almost every inch of George Bush Park is decorated for the Basant. Food is an important part of any celebration; Chicken Tikka, Seikh Kababs, Samosas, and other popular vegetarian dishes are sold and served in the Basant mela. This year the Basant was celebrated on Saturday the 10th of March. Organized by Pakistan American Council of Texas (PACT) Hosted by DJ Samia At George W Bush Park, 16756 Westheimer Pkwy, Houston TX 77082

PAKISTAN

LAHORE ARSON:

Christian leaders say residents had been receiving threats

Even as one considers the possibility of a property issue being the real motive behindthe recent mob attack in Lahore’s Joseph Colony, representatives of the Christian community have not ruled it out — with some saying it was indeed the driving force behind the attack that left over a hundred houses burnt beyond recognition. President of Pakistan Minority Front’s Lahore chapter, Saleem Shakir told Dawn.com that weeks before the incident took place, “a group from the land mafia in the city’s Misri Shah market had started threatening the colony’s residents to vacate the area”. Situated close to Joseph Colony, Misri Shah is famous for being an old steel and scrap market in Lahore, similar to Shershah in Karachi, with a shanty town, for instance, the Henry and Joseph colonies, located nearby. “The issue was to move these people so that the scrap market could be extended,” said Shakir. When asked about Imran Shahid and Sawan Masih’s ‘drunken’ brawl that preceded the attack, Michael Javed, who heads the Pakistan Minority Front in Karachi, said the allegation against Sawan Masih was “used as the perfect excuse to drive residents out of the area”. “The two were friends,” added Javed. “They used to chat and drink together. I know for a fact that after the brawl, there was a lot of instigation to make it seem like a religious issue.” Shakir further noted that the police cleared up the area before the mob marched in. “If the police knew there was going to be an attack, why didn’t they do anything to prevent it?” This is not the first time the Christian community has been attacked in Pakistan. In August 2009, seven Christians were burnt alive in Gojra over the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran. In Saturday’s attack, Javed said two churches and more than a hundred bibles were also set ablaze.

Musharraf to return to Pakistan on March 24 said. Pakistan’s government would provide security for Musharraf, he added. The ex-president had already said he planned to return in March to take part in the election, but had not given an exact date. He had also announced similar plans to return in January last year, but his aides advised him to hold off because of political instability in the country. Pakistan’s assemblies are due to be dissolved on March 16. An election has to be held within 90 days, allowing for a period for campaigning and other preparations.

DUBAI: Pakistan’s former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf will return home on March 24 after nearly four years of self-imposed exile in Dubai, his press aide said on Tuesday, in time to take part in the general election. The former army general faces the possibility of arrest in Pakistan on charges that he failed to provide adequate security to former prime minister Benazir Bhutto before her assassination in 2007. His press aide Khurram Haris told Reuters Musharraf would return to Karachi on a public flight on March 24, and would not be detained on his arrival. “President Musharraf has made it clear that he will present himself to the courts because he believes he hasn’t done anything wrong,” Haris

India demands return of marines, summons Italian ambassador NEW DELHI: The Italian ambassador to India has been summoned by the external affairs ministry on Tuesday in connection with the case involving two naval guards from Italy. Earlier on Tuesday, as Italy's refusal to send back its two naval guards triggered an uproar, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the issue will be taken up with that country so that the accused soldiers could be brought back to face trial for alleged murder of two Indian fishermen here. Left MPs, who met the Prime Minister, said Singh told them that Italy's decision was "unacceptable". However, PMO sources said Singh only told the delegations that the matter would be looked into and he will ask external affairs minister Salman Khurshid to take up the issue with Italy. Delegations of angry Left and Congress-led UDF MPs met Singh separately to express anguish and demand his intervention in the "serious" matter.

"We met the Prime Minister and took up the issue of Italian naval guards. The Prime Minister told us that he came to know about this from newspapers. He assured us that he will ask the external affairs minister to look into this issue to intervene in this issue," CPM MP MB Rajesh said. "He (PM) said this is unacceptable to us," Rajesh added. Another party MP P Karunakaran told a press conference separately that Singh "told us that this is not acceptable to us" and assured the delegation that the matter would be taken up "strongly" with the Italian government. When pointed out that the PMO said Singh did not say that the decision is "unacceptable", Rajesh remarked, "it is a lie. If he did not say it is 'unacceptable', it means it is acceptable to the government of India." Khurshid, meanwhile, said the government is

studying Italy's decision, its reasons as also implications. "We will study and take a rightful position ... We will take informed position," he told reporters on the issue which has sparked an outrage in Kerala. Congress MP PC Chacko, who led UDF-delegation, said, "More than saying whether this is acceptable or not, the Prime Minister has said that he will ask external affairs minister to take up this issue and use all diplomatic channels to bring them back." MPs from Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Kerala Congress (Mani) were also part of the UDF delegation. The agitated MPs met Singh in the wake of Italian foreign ministry statement that the naval guards Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone will not return to India from Italy where they had gone to cast vote in last month's elections after special permission granted by the Supreme Court. MIAMI, (UPI) -- The family of an 82-year-old woman who was forcibly removed from a Florida train for singing said she suffered possible shoulder and hip fractures. Donald Anderson said a passenger on the Miami-Dade Metrorail train captured cellphone video of his mother, Emma Anderson, 82, being removed from the train by a security guard who grabbed her bag and pulled her from her seat, WPLG-TV, Miami, reported Thursday. "He snatched so hard until I fell. I fell backwards," Emma Anderson said. Donald Anderson said X-rays found his mother may have suffered shoulder and hip fractures from the incident. "When I look at them snatching my 82-year-old mother up off that Metrorail, it's disgusting to me," he said. Emma Anderson said the guard told her she was being removed for singing her spiritual hymn. "I was beating my little beads with the bottle and I was singing a song, and he came up to me and said, 'Ma'am, you're making too much noise,'" she said. Miami-Dade Transit spokeswoman Karla Damian said Emma Anderson was violating the rules by singing loudly and refused requests to stop. "Miami-Dade Transit has a responsibility to all its passengers to provide a safe and comfortable travel experience. ... We regret that Ms. Anderson had to eventually be escorted out, but regardless of age, all passengers need to abide by the rules associated with using transit," Damian said. Donald Anderson said the family has hired a lawyer for potential legal action.

THE SPRING BAZAAR Do you want to collaborate to create a Fashion Show then Read on

By Nargis Lakhani

Spring, a time of blossoms and colors, a time for laughter and frolic, a time for outings and feasting, a time for spending and enjoyment. Put all these elements together and that’s what you experienced on Sunday the 10th at ZN Fashion’s The SPRING BAZAAR at the Marriot, town center of Sugar land, Shakkar wadi as it is also called within the abounding desi community living here. For the desi population, clothes and jewelry hold a magnetic pull. A walk down Hillcroft where most of the desi stores are found also has a huge spread of every imaginable item that one would wish for, however, in this bazaar there was a difference and this difference is created by Israr Qureshi and his lovely wife Sahista. Based in Chicago, Illionois, the couple organizes such Bazaars in a few select cities of the USA, usually starting out in Spring. The difference in Sugar Land was that most of the stalls were run by women who usually operate their boutiques from their homes. I met quite a few of these lovely ladies and they all were happy and excited by the encouraging turnout of people. Though Pakistani dresses dominated the show, there were quite a few Indian ones too. There were Payal Talwaar, Sunaina Chandnani, Jyoti Sanghvi, Mitali and Rumki Dasgupta from the Indian origin, their design for dresses, jewelry and purses had a distinct Indianness to it. The Pakistani workmanship is par excellence; the subtle-

ness of their embroidery, color and style is eye-catching. The reasonable rates of these high quality products is the USP(unique selling proposition) of this event. Because these are from home based boutiques they do not have the high operating costs that normal stores would have. Besides, not being stuck in stores, these women entrepreneurs have the freedom to be a part of such touring bazaars. They get to meet and bond with many potential new customers and maintain their contacts with them. Almost all of them said that the networking is the best part. Customers are also very happy because they get to see a whole gamut of designs from all over India and Pakistan under the same roof. Besides, the prices are so reasonable that Mr. Israr, the organizer, making sure every it is an irresistible deal. Alterations are stall holder is satisfied cheap and easily available. Everybody equally hard and I make sure that I also seemed to be happy so it was time for me give my complete support and cooperato have a chat with the event organizer, Mr tion to them. To see the women sucIsrar Qureshi, President of ZN Fashions ceed gives me maximum satisfaction.” Inc.. That comment from Mr. Israr was indeed Mr. Qureshi, a handsome man in his so touching and so insightful. Women middle age had a happy and a satisfied have so much potential and like Mr. Israr smile on his face. He was clearly surprised stated, they have to work doubly hard in by the constant flow of people walking in and then walking out with bags full of shop- this country – they have to take care of the home and children(without the support of ping. When I asked him what was so special about the event, he fondly pointed over the extended family that is ever present back home) and also create businesses to his wife Shaista, and said, “I’ve been of their own, besides, they are always by watching her; she’s been working so hard, the side of their spouses, not letting them I feel proud of her achievement and want fail in a foreign country but helping them to extend my maximum support to her. to stabilize the whole families. Subtle yet However, every woman over here, who committed, Mr. Israr truly is, to the cause of has booked a stall with me, is working

women’s upliftment. Next time around, when The Bazaar is scheduled to come back on 7th of July 2013, he’d love to make this a two day event, and he would like to add more elements to it. A Grand Fashion Show in the evening after the Bazaar hours, from 7pm to 10pm. Also, he wants to bring in allied service providers under the same roof, thus, you may find wedding/event planners, caterers, entertainers, bankers, realtors and interior decorators. If you were a young couple about to be married you could feel confident of finding the best deals under one roof. Women love change; and they love to look beautiful. Mr. Israr uses this insight that he has got from his many interactions with them that he now uses to bring them what they want. Israr futher elaborates, in order to serve the public; the underlying values must always be upheld. Sincerity and integrity arehis hall mark yet, he is humble to accept the fact that only the Almighty’s will prevails, hence, he never lets anything pull him down. He delivers more than he promises. Ershan, the young budding photographer (who we featured in our last issue) came along with me and took some amazing pictures which you can enjoy. Young Educators in Houston Community Changing Students Lives By Nupur Shah & Derek Pham Houston - Teachers are more than great planners and skilled executors; they are transformational leaders who inspire and motivate students beyond what they ever thought was possible. The teachers of Hartman Middle School are on a mission to push beyond the walls of the classroom and give students a memorable experience that will open their minds to hope and a future filled with endless possibilities. The Washington, D.C. exploration trip, from May 29 – June 1, 2013, will give the students of Hartman Middle School a chance to see their nation’s capital and become more aware of the world around them. For Hartman students, many of whom are from low-income backgrounds, they have yet to venture outside of their Houston community, let alone the state of Texas. 22 out of our 30 D.C. Scholars have never been on an airplane. More than 1/3 of our D.C. Scholars have never visited outside of the city of Houston. More than 1/3 of our D.C. Scholars will be the first in their families to graduate from high school and go on to college. This experience will be an opportunity for our students to also explore our nation’s capital, a city rich in national history and rooted in the idea of liberty and justice. The goals of our trip involve three components: exposure, investment, and application. Hartman Middle School is classified as a Title I campus, where over 90% of our

students are considered to be low income, 23 are homeless, and 2 call a shelter “home.” Additionally, 58% of our students are considered “at-risk”. Growing up in the Gulfgate community and surrounding areas, many of our students are unknowingly exposed to the injustices of our country including, poverty, poor health and education, drugs and crime. One goal of this trip is to expose students to a new reality and inspire them to work towards achieving a better standard of living through education. Our second goal is to build investment, a strong positive culture not solely amongst the students who will participate, but the entire school. The opportunity to participate in the trip relies on student academics, teacher recommendations, and good behavior. Moreover, it is our belief that the participating thirty students will rediscover their love for learning and employ a deep commitment to their education and future academic career. The D.C. Scholars will go on to be the leaders

in the Hartman community and will serve as role models for other students on campus. We want our students to add to their knowledge, beyond what they may learn in a classroom atmosphere. Throughout the trip, students will engage in meaningful dialogue with their peers and team leaders about college readiness, achievement, and leadership. Students will attend a morning session to frame the day’s activities and will end each day with a discussion and reflection on their experience. Following their return to Hartman, students will complete a five or six year plan to develop their unique pathway to college beginning with their current grade level. Jorge Sanchez is an honor roll student at Hartman Middle School. “I want to be a DC Scholar and explore Washington’s museums, memorials, and historical sites." His path hasn’t been easy. "The most difficult thing I had to overcome was when I moved to the U.S. from Mexico. It was difficult because I had to adjust to a new society." But he is excited about visiting the memorial buildings in DC. "The memorials represent important persons and parts of the history of the United States," says Jorge. The projected cost per child, including airfare, accommodation, and food, is $850. To donate, contact Nupur Shah at nshah@ houstonisd.org. For more information visit www.HartmanDCScholars.org.

retary for many years to the very popular Rajesh Khanna, later joined his production team, then went on to lead troupes on foreign tours etc etc. Every time, every where he was welcomed with open arms and trusted to deliver. His strength lies in networking, in creating a WIN-WIN situation for everybody involved. Finally, after one of his tours to the USA, he finally decided to settle down here in Houston and for once be a completely devoted family man; all the touring had kept him away from his growing children Surviving in a foreign land threw up its own challenges but he has survived all the ups and downs. His faith in the almighty has grown through his trials and tribulations. He now takes life as it comes, enjoying every moment of it and giving of himself fully and completely without any reservations. He looks forward to manage the affairs of the visiting artists from home countries, specially Southeast Asia. Moving forward, Arif sees a lot of untapped talent in this great city of Houston

which so many desis have chosen to be their permanent home and so many more continue to move into. Desi parents invest so much of time, energy and money into getting their children and themselves into upholding their cultural heritage. Arif wants to facilitate the creation of platforms that will bring big corporates having stakes in the entertainment industry and local talent like dancers, actors, singers, technicians, script writers so on and so forth. These platforms can then create programs that fulfill the needs and appeals to the desi population of the USA. All this needs big money and Arif sees that this can survive and sustain only interested stakeholders, especially the corporate are willing to take the initiative to invest in local talents. A REALITY SHOW like the ones we see on almost all desi channels is what is required for the USA. Any takers??? Any further thoughts, feedback, comment, opinion???? IMRAN KHAN…

SP

…..Far from us yet, You know what?

When he was active in cricket he enjoyed full command over almost all the departments of the game. Fully respected and obeyed by his playmates, he kept uniformity in the Pakistan cricket team as long as he reined as a Captain. Under him the national team was a fighting unitreal fighting unit on many cricket grounds and brought laurels home winning and achieving admirable success after success. Even the coveted World Cup. He bowled with lethal accuracy and batted with all aggression; making the rival teams face defeats-sometimes humiliating defeats. He is on the field once again. Should we say he has been on the field and playing ever since he gave up cricket except that it’s a different kind of play and different field? It is the play of politics being played on political ground. Here, he is captaining and commanding over his team called Tehrik-e-Insaaf for quite a long time now and as we all know, he is doing good enough and we can also say better than others, because he is not facing any sort of problems within the party. But still it’s a different ball game and much more tough than the game of cricket. Like in cricket, Pakistan has staunch rivalry with India. But in politics, Imran khan has to face tough rivalry and of course from many direction. How far he will play solidly is something only time will tell but since the General Elections are soon going to be held in Pakistan, and also because people have started expecting him to become the next Prime Minister of Pakistan, we can appropriately think and express our opinion. As said before only the time will teel how he will fare and effectively and ultimately how successfully he will play this game. Will he be able to bowl out his rivals easily? Will he be able to put a big score and win the game? Well, we can just guess and cannot predict the out come of the game. In the game of cricket he was effective in his different

roles as the bowler and the batsman. But the same thing cannot be said about his role as the captain of the his political team. I will cite here a couple of incidents: It was perhaps India’s last cricket tour to Pakistan before they severed the cricketing relations. A test match was being played in Pindi. It was high

scoring match and it could have resulted only in a draw. Jawed Miandad was in full batting form and was 280 not out when Imran Khan applied unnecessary declaration and allowed India to play second innings for just a few hours. Had he allowed Miandad to play for some more time he would have crossed the figure

of 300 and even could have achieved further milestones to break earlier scoring records. But Imran, for no apparent reason did not give him that life time opportunity. The first ever World cup which Pakistan won under his captainship was a real proud occasion to national spirit but after accept-

ing the cup while addressing the crowed he said something like this: ‘ It is like dream coming true. I always wanted to win this cup. I won it. Now I will be able collect massive support for building Shaukat Khanum Hospital’ Was that occasion a personal achievement or National achievement? Those who were his staunch fans also did not approve his attitude. But still, it’s a part of human nature. To err is human you know! Nevertheless, one has got to admit that Imran Khan does have leadership qualities. The cricket team under him was a star-studded unit but still Imran effectively dominated over them. People acclaimed him and also criticized him, liked him and also disliked him for his roles in cricket but he remained undisturbed and undeterred. In politics too, he is criticized and acclaimed but even then those who know him closely, admit that he does have leadership qualities. Not to say that there isn’t anybody else. Rather there are many other senior politicians in the field equipped with quality leadership but apart from a leader’s quality Imran gets more points personality wise. He is handsome, dashing and good-looking for his age. Also fit and fine, and all these are plus points. Talking about his plus points one can say that he could have become a good actor too! Yes of course, as an actor also Imran Khan would have ruled over many others. It makes me wonder as to why he chose to go from one ground (cricket) to another ground (politics) but you know, Imran is not the only cricketer turned politician. There is another politician who was a player in national cricket team who also toured with the team to West Indies to play test matches. He too was a bowler. Guess who. Readers are invited to indentify him, or wait for our next issue of this News Paper to know who he is!

Annu is all praise for the director of "Jai Ho Democracy" Ranjit Kapoor, who, he says, has brought together both entertainment and

"Usually to keep a film entertaining, a filmmaker forgets about the realism. Similarly realistic filmmakers forget about entertainment. But in this film you will get both," he added. Salman's new girl is

Daisy Shah

Guess where we spotted Salman Khan's next debutante co-star for Sohail Khan's film 'Mental' There has been buzz for a while that Salman Khan has a new leading lady in brother Sohail Khan’s next film. The lucky girl is Daisy Shah. But guess where we last saw her? The newbie was spotted in an item number in last week’s release Bloody Isshq. Insiders say Daisy has earlier been a dancer in choreographer Ganesh Acharya’s troupe. Although Mental is supposed to be her debut film, we caught the leggy lass in her item act in Danger Hai Laila. A source states, “While there are many names floating around in the industry about the identity of Sallu’s new heroine, it could be her. Bhai spotted Daisy at an event and he is known to make a decision on an impulse.” However, Salman, Sohail and the film’s unit have been tightlipped about revealing too much on the matter and are yet to make an announcement on who is actually paired opposite Sallu. Arjun Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra's 'Salaam-e-Ishq' connection It’s been a giant leap for Arjun Kapoor from being an assistant director to a full-fledged actor. Incidentally Arjun, who stars opposite Priyanka Chopra in his next, used to address the actress as Priyanka madam in Salaam-e-Ishq, where he was director Nikhil Advani’s AD. A source from the sets says, “Priyanka was playing the lead in one of the stories in Salaam-e-Ishq. Arjun used to explain her scenes to PC and used to call her madam. And now he is her co-star. Arjun can’t believe he has been signed opposite her and has already started shooting for the film. ncidentally, the Chopra connection refuses to die down for Arjun as he made his big screen debut opposite PC’s cousin Parineeti Chopra. Says Arjun, “I guess it’s destiny that the Chopra surname has been beautifully intertwined with me at such a nascent stage in my career. I hope it continues for years to come.” (MD)

'Himmatwala'

soundtrack revisits 1980s, brings fun, frolic

'Zila Ghazibad' songs in sync with movie-theme Director Anand Kumar is back with some hard-hitting action with masala potboiler "Zila Ghaziabad" and its album has five original tracks composed by the duo of Amjad-Nadeem and a guest composition by Bappa Lahiri. Shabbir Ahmed has penned the lyrics. The soundtrack kicks off with 'Zila Ghaziabad', the title track, which is in sync with the theme of the movie. It is crooned by Sukhvinder Singh, whose powerful vocals do full justice to the composition. Along with some good desi beats, the lyrics also play an important part in providing a good start to the album.

Music Director: Sajid-Wajid; Lyricists: Sachin, Jigar, and Sameer Singers: Sunidhi Chauhan, Amit Kumar, Shreya Ghoshal, Mika Singh, Bappi Lahiri, Mamta Sharma, Shaan Rating: * * * * Want to time travel into the 1980s? Want to try those deadly acrobatic moves? Get your hands on "Himmatwala" remake album and your wishes will be fulfilled. "Naino mein sapna" opens the "Himmatwala" album and how! Amit Kumar does a spectacular job at recreating the vocal brilliance of the original song and Shreya Ghoshal sounds tailormade for the track. Sajid-Wajid do a great job of keeping the original essence, yet making the track a potential hit in today's times. Who could have been better than Mika Singh to recreate the naughty "Taki taki"? Again an original track that has been rejigged. Shreya proves yet again her mettle in the industry. An out and out entertaining track, it will tease and raise a truck load of fun.

The first original track of the album "Dhoka dhoka" is an item song that has an "item" team! Vocal powerhouses Mamta Sharma and Sunidhi Chauhan have teamed up with Bappi Lahiri to create a refreshing dance track. With lyrics ranging from Marathi to Punjabi, this is one track that rides high on oomph and spunk. "Bum pe laat" is up next and it instantly reminds you of the Birdie Song. It's a situational number and Shaan's voice has a butter smooth feel about it. The kids will instantly take a liking to it and enjoy the slapstick comedy feel of it. Even though the track isn't very long, it just might amalgamate well with the movie.

Recreating the magic of the 1980s and the rage that disco was is certainly a mammoth task. The composers, however, do a decent job with "Thank god its Friday" (TGIF). Sunidhi, the expected pick for the track, blends in with the mood and tone of the track, but the video takes the icing on the cake. With Sonakshi Sinha dressed to do disco, TGIF cannot be ignored. Hear it to believe it. With spunk, disco "Himmatwala" revisits and redefines 1980s. An entertaining album that promises a lot of fun and frolic, it does not have even a single dull moment. You may want to revisit your old wardrobe to get into the feel of "Himmatwala". By SantaBanta.com

Minimum tracks get maximum effect in 'Murder 3' album Music Directors: Pritam Chakraborty and Mustafa Zahid Lyricist: Sayeed Quadri Singers: Shafqat Amanat Ali, KK, Mustafa Zahid, and Nikhil D'Souza Rating: * * * * One thing that sets them apart is that they keep churning out good music again and again, always meeting the expectations. With "Murder 3", one gets a bit sceptical initially as there are just four original songs in the film. However, the air is cleared once you put the tracks on loop. Mahesh Bhatt has roped in our own Pritam Chakraborty and Mustafa Zahid from across the border for the serene compositions that have been penned by Sayeed Quadri. The album kicks off with "Teri jhuki nazar" and Shafqat Amanat Ali proves once again why he is one of the most sought after singers from Pakistan. He brings out the romantic flavour with such eloquence that it makes your heart skip a beat. The gentle rendition has some beautiful words. The composition with little bit of guitar sounds and minimal experimentation sets the ball rolling for the album. "Mat aazma le" takes you to an all-together different territory as it delves into the pain and longing of not being together with the special one of your life. The duo of KK and Pritam do justice to the tender wordings of Quadri. The sound of violin alongside the vocals gets the

desired effect, but the song does not click with you in the first go. Listen to it a couple of times and then feel the melody growing on you. It is followed by "Jaata hai tujhe", a peppy track crooned by Nikhil D'Souza, which transforms the mood of the album. It has some effectual electronic sounds by Pritam that sync well with the vocals. The chorus is equally engaging and the beats keep you grooving all the way. It also has a film version that is equally humable like the original. Rounding up the album is "Hum jee lenge" where Mustafa Zahid gets into the act with soft guitar strums to start it off. It's a sad song with a difference as the singer's beautiful voice pacifies the ache rather than escalating it. But it is the composition, which is the true winner here as everything fits in place to make it a delectable soft rock number. Especially enterprising are the drumbeats that blend oh-sowell with the guitar sound and the vocals. The rock version tries to step up the tempo with the guitar riffs and is more fast-paced than the original. However, despite giving it a few tries the original remains to the king of the ring. The final verdict for "Murder-3" is that the soundtrack manages to impress even with few tracks in its kitty. However, the only stroke that ruins the picture here is that it leaves takers like me a bit disappointed, who expected some more music in the bag.

I saw God while I was alone on a mountain top:

JIM CARREY The 51-year-old actor said the Indians left him stranded on a mountain top with only a knife to defend himself against deadly animals. Carrey believes it was God who protected him while he was stranded on the mountain top for 24 hours with just a 7ft blanket and the knife, the Daily Mirror reported. "They left me in a little 7ft circle with a blanket and only a tiny knife to fight off cougars, mountain lions, rattlesnakes, scorpions and whatever else was there." Narrating his 'vision quest' experience, carrey says, "I had 12 ounces of water to last me 24 hours and I watched the mountain all day, wondering what they meant by the visions." "What happens is the shadows change and they talk to you and when you ask questions you get answers and that was happening. Then at night I got tired of standing and I lay down on this little Indian blanket and I was really frightened." Sharing the experience of the fateful night, actor said "The coyotes were howling and the place was full of rattlesnakes, and I actually spoke out loud and said, 'God I'm scared, be with me'." "And at that point the mountain range that was above me became the perfect shape of a man laying on his back beside me. All the fear left my body and I lay there thinking, 'This is really happening. I'm actually seeing God and I can't believe it. I'm so lucky'." The 'Yes Man' star insists he wasn't frightened after seeing God and was in "complete bliss" following the experience.

Steven Spielberg praises Bangalore animator in hand-written note An animated film made by an Indian student as a tribute to his movie idol Steven Spielberg has earned him a personal note from the legendary director. A 19-year old student from Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology (Bangalore), created an animated tribute using Speilberg's most iconic films, including "Jaws", "Jurassic Park," "ET", "Schindler's List" and his most recent movie, "Lincoln" and uploaded it on Youtube a week ago. Spielberg saw a blog by Krishna about himself on Chicago Sun Times and then watched the short clip before reverting with a extremely touching and personally hand-written note. "Dear Krishna, I read the story about you in the Chi Sun Times and then I watched your sweet and short respectful movie. Your image choices and clever transitions gave your tribute films a real narrative. I was impressed to say the least," Spielberg wrote. The director promised Krishna that he will closely follow his career. "I will be

looking at the horizon to see where next you will emerge..... and impress," Spielberg wrote. Shenoi, a second-year college student was thrilled to received the note from his movie idol. "Wow. Steven Spielberg, my favorite filmmaker of all time, wrote, handwrote, a note to me after seeing my animated tribute to him. I'm shaking in knees right now. Wow."

You have an extravagant streak around Friday or Saturday, but check your budget before you indulge it -- and ask yourself whether it'll make you happy in a meaningful way. Simple can be best. Tidy up on Sunday, and catch up with someone you miss, too.

Fostering the good parts and defusing the suboptimal takes a light touch. Sunday begins a great few days for you personally; you can really get things done.

Aquarius 1/20 - 2/18

Your credit card is maxed and you can only find about fifteen cents between the couch cushions. Is this cause for a personal crisis? Of course not. So it's tuna sandwiches for you on Monday and Tuesday -- no big deal. By Wednesday you'll have developed such a taste for tuna sandwiches (you'll have gotten it down to a technique, with capers and everything) that you won't mind. Thursday is full of advanced ideas and altruism, and Friday and Saturday are marked by huge leaps forward in your understanding of your family. Sunday is stuffed with love. Hotsy-totsy!

Week starting from March 17

Gemini 5/21 - 6/21

Monday's custom-made for meeting new people. Whether it's in a work or social setting, you put them right at ease (and may even flirt with them!). Around Tuesday and Wednesday, you're in a more conservative frame of mind than usual, which could be a good thing -- revisit your personal budget and set some realistic financial goals. You're all fun and games between Thursday and Saturday, but you're also whip-smart and action-oriented. Enjoy yourself, but be aware that you're having quite an impact, too. Sunday looks just right for projects and errands. You're a bit of a perfectionist that day.

Virgo

8/23 - 9/22 That brain of yours is moving fast on Monday, so fast that your mouth may not be able to keep up. Slow down or risk saying something a bit off. Being around people -- whether working with a group, hanging out with a friend or getting out and mixing with a crowd -- charges you up between Tuesday and Thursday. Why go it alone when fun and support are there? Friday and Saturday have a lot going on; show how adaptable you can be and you may just end up enjoying yourself. Sunday kicks off a couple of great days for you personally. How will you get the most out of them?

Sagittarius 11/22 - 12/21

What someone's telling you on Monday may sound pretty sweet, but do they intend to follow up? There's no need to be paranoid; just be aware. Around Tuesday and Wednesday, everything's up for questioning, but in a searching, productive way. Advance your personal goals and expand your personal outlook. Then it's lucky you from Thursday through Saturday, when everything is very likely to go your way, and even the detours are a heck of a lot of fun. Maybe it's not luck -maybe it's your optimism, honesty and humor. Plan some time alone on Sunday to look back and regroup.

Pisces 2/19 - 3/20

Monday looks a little nutty, so keep your goals realistic and your inner critic on 'mute.' You're in the spotlight around Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and you look good in the glow. Don't be surprised if you gain some new fans (or if things heat up in the love department!). Be leery of that person who wants your honest opinion on Friday or Saturday -- do you really want to go there? No need to dissemble; just ask them some questions instead. Lend a hand to somebody in need on Sunday -- your karma will thank you, even if they don't.

It has become appallingly obvious that our technology Albert Einstein has exceeded our humanity.

Apple TV, now in India Apple has quietly rolled out its media streaming device, Apple TV, in India at a starting price of Rs. 8,295. With the launch of Apple TV, the company’s full portfolio of Apple products are finally available in India. Not to be confused with the company’s rumoured television set, Apple TV allows consumers to wirelessly stream media content from their iTunes account to their television.

An Apple spokesperson, who confirmed the development, said that the device would be out in retail stores over the next week. “Yes, we have launched the product. It will be out in our authorised resellers in the next seven to ten days,” the spokesperson said. The move comes less than two months after Apple launched its iTunes store in India, selling high-definition movies at prices starting from Rs. 490. Apple TV is widely expected to be part of a bigger rollout of the company’s rumoured television set as it would help smooth out any possible compatibility issues. The device faces competition from Micromax’s Smart Stick and Akai’s Smart Box.

Samsung has Apple in its sights with Galaxy launch With an aura of expectation usually reserved only for shiny new Apple products, Samsung is set to announce its latest smartphone on Thursday in the opening salvo of a new war between the Korean electronics giant and the iconic iPhone manufacturer. A series of titillating leaks have stoked excitement that the new phone, to be called the Galaxy S4, will mark the first time since the introduction of the iPhone in 2007 that another phone could emerge as the market leader. While gadget freaks are poring over every new rumour, Michael Gartenberg, research director of Gartner, is a little more sceptical. “The iPhone 5 is considered to be the gold standard for smartphones, so the bar is very high for Samsung at this point,” he told DPA. If the rumours on numerous gadget websites turn out to be true, Apple will have a fight on its hands. The Galaxy S4 is expected to boast a bigger screen, stretching 5 inches, than the iPhone 5’s 4-inch display. Samsung has indicated that it will eschew the sleek aluminium case favoured by Apple in favour of a plastic case that it says

is cheaper and easier to manufacture. The design is expected to feature squarer edges than both its predecessor, the bestselling Galaxy S3, and the iPhone line. Other leaked images have shown the S4’s screen to stretch from bezel to bezel, with no physical home button. The phone is widely expected to be powered by an eight-core processor — and will be “ridiculously fast,” according to Business Insider. An even bigger attraction could be eye-tracking software that can detect when a user has finished reading to the bottom of the screen and automatically scroll down, according to The New York Times. Called Eye Scroll, the new feature will be paired with something called Eye Pause, which will automatically pause videos if it detects you are no longer looking at them. Put those features together with rumours about wireless charging, a 13MP camera and the continuous improvement of the Google Android operating system, and it’s clear that Samsung has its best chance yet to take the smartphone crown from Apple.

India downs Pakistan A spirited India notched up a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Pakistan in a must-win match to keep its alive its hopes in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament here on Tuesday. A loss today for India, which has lost its first two matches, would have shut the door on Michael Nobbs’ wards. Pakistan’s efforts produced result immediately when Waqas deflected in skipper Muhammad Imran’s flick after it tried a variation from its first penalty corner. But the Indians bounced back quickly as they pumped in two goals in a span of five minutes to stun their neighbours. Rupinder restored parity for India in the fifth minute converting India’s only penalty corner of the match with a fierce drag-flick which beat Pakistan goalkeeper Imran Shah. Four minutes later, an opportunist Akashdeep put India ahead, slamming in a rebound after Nithin Thimmiah’s initial shot was stopped by the Pakistan custodian. The Pakistanis also found it difficult to get the better of an agile P.R. Sreejesh, who was brilliant under the Indian goal. Sreejesh was in ominous form as he came up with as many as six to seven brilliant saves, one of which came just at the stroke of halftime, to deny the Pakistanis any scoring chance. Leading 2-1, the Indians looked more organised after change of ends even as Pakistan desperately searched for the equaliser. Pakistan’s task became even more difficult when Mandeep scored India’s third goal in the 56th minute. Mandeep scored from a rebound after his initial touch was gloved away by Shah. Trailing 1-3, the stunned Pakistanis pressed hard and in the process earned three penalty corners but Sreejesh stood in between them and goal on all the three occasions.

Ingram, Kleinveldt star in huge win South Africa began their journey to the Champions Trophy with a leap - not just a step - as they overcame Pakistan with a polished all-round effort that was set up by their batsmen and finished off in the field. Importantly for them, the contributions came from quarters that have been areas of concern in the past. The middle order, and Colin Ingram in particular, played a meaningful part and a bowling attack without Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel functioned effectively. South Africa's batsmen dealt with Pakistan's quartet of spinners with ease while their seamers, led by Ryan McLaren and Rory Kleinveldt, shut the opposition out of the match. By contrast, Pakistan suffered because they fielded only two seamers and did not use Saeed Ajmal well enough, taking him off after he had made a breakthrough. The fifth and sixth bowlers, Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik, conceded 81 runs in 11 overs runs on a surface that did not aid turn, and against batsmen who were intent on proving their captain's belief that they were capable of smothering the spin threat. Smart stats Rory Kleinveldt finished with 4 for 22 off just 5.2 overs. This is the lowest number of overs bowled by a South African bowler in an innings while finishing with a four-wicket haul or more. The 125-run win is South Africa's sixth by a margin of 100 or more runs against Pakistan. Four of these have come in home ODIs. South Africa's total of 315 is their fourth-highest total against Pakistan and their second 300-plus score against them at home. Colin Ingram's century is his second and the 14th overall by a South African batsman against Pakistan. Ingram's previous century came in Abu Dhabi in 2010. Ingram's hundred is his third in ODIs and second in Bloemfontein. He has scored 626 runs in 19 ODIs at an average of 44.71. The 120-run stand between Ingram and AB de Villiers is the third highest third-wicket stand for South Africa against Pakistan and their highest such stand against them at home. De Villiers has been involved in the top

three stands. Shahid Afridi became the first batsman to pass the 300-sixes mark in ODIs. Afridi has now hit 301 sixes in 324 innings. Sanath Jayasuriya is second with 270 sixes. The number of overs faced by Pakistan (36.2) is the joint fourth lowest for a completed innings against South Africa. The lowest is 25 overs in Mohali in 2006. The Pakistan quicks had started well as both Junaid Khan and Umar Gul found early seam movement. Gul repeatedly beat Graeme Smith's bat with deliveries that moved away. Even Hashim Amla, who opened the boundary count with a gorgeous coax through the covers, did not find the going easy. He inside-edged Junaid for four early on and went on to do it twice more in a somewhat charmed stint, which also included him being dropped on 15. The openers chose to take the Powerplay as soon as it become available. Pakistan used it to introduce spin, which they continued with for 21 overs, but it only restricted South Africa for a while. They scored 29 runs in the Powerplay for the loss of Smith. AB de Villiers promoted himself to No. 3 and was joined by Colin Ingram after Amla had one too many dalliances with chance and was caught on the deep square-leg boundary. De Villiers and Ingram shared in the most important stand of the innings, with Ingram's knock of greater importance as he tries to cement a spot in the starting XI. Ingram swept well and for the most part they accumulated runs quietly but quickly. De Villiers hit his first boundary after he had scored 37 runs but his search for singles was ceaseless. When he did find the rope, he did it a second time for good measure. He made room against Ajmal and lofted over extra cover for four to bring up his half-century and then pulled the next ball to bring up the century stand off 103 balls. It had swelled to 120 when Ajmal had the last laugh as de Villiers lobbed to short cover. Ingram took over and played his part in ending Afridi's participation with the ball. His

eighth and last over cost 21 runs; Ingram hit two out of five boundaries. Faf du Plessis was responsible for the other three. He put on 62 with Ingram before scooping to short fine leg. Although Farhaan Berhardien is not known as a hitter, he was sent in with four overs to go and hit the two sixes of the innings off consecutive balls. He sent Junaid Khan over long-on and midwicket and ensured Ingram, on 96, had strike in the last over. He needed only one delivery to stroke the ball through the covers and bring up a second century in Bloemfontein and a second against Pakistan. He also took South Africa to their third highest total at the ground, giving Pakistan a tough chase. Pakistan's openers were challenged by Lonwabo Tsotsobe, who found swing and induced an edge from Mohammed Hafeez that fell short of slip. He could have had Hafeez a second time when he got a leading edge to du Plessis, which popped out of his hands at gully. Kyle Abbott offered some relief by inviting the drive. Jamshed, however, was just getting into a higher gear when he chased a wide ball off Kleinveldt's second over and was caught at first slip. Kleinveldt also got the timely breakthrough when he ran Hafeez out at the non-strikers' end. Younis Khan had driven back at the bowler, who deflected the ball with the slightest touch of his ring finger. Pakistan needed a big stand but AB de Villiers did not let Younis and Misbah-ul-Haq settle with clever rotations of his bowlers. They posted 49 before Younis became Abbott's first ODI wicket. McLaren ensured Pakistan could not claw their way back. He displayed excellent use of variation and the short ball had Misbah caught behind as he tried to pull one. At 135 for 5 in the 29th over, it was only a matter of time but Afridi lengthened it with some blows at the end. Three huge hits took his sixes tally to 301. He muscled his way to 34 before holing out to deep midwicket to give Kleinveldt career-best figures and South Africa a comprehensive win. Source: Cricinfo
