FATEH ALI KHAN

An Experience to Remember Nargis Lakhani

The night of Saturday, the 20th of April, had to be experienced to be able to understand what I am talking about. For us, a group of five single women, car-pooling, the fun started as we went around picking each one up. We finally decided who was the most capable to drive us to the venue, who would be best to give directions and finally the three in the back were left to sit back and engage in deep conversation (I mean… gossip!). As we neared the venue, every passing car had desis decked to their best, all headed to the same destination – the Rahat Fateh Ali Khan concert. The weather outside as we parked our car and headed towards Reliant Arena was perfect; slightly on the cooler side and windy. It created a further lightness in the environment. The inside was already jampacked. To Go Food boxes were selling like hotcakes and many desis were not averse to partaking of the spirits to further lighten up. Inside the stadium, almost all the seats were taken and Rahat himself entered at 9:20 PM sharp to a round of resounding applause. Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is an unassuming, simple, down to earth and affable person, one who immediately appeals; nothing arrogant about him. In fact his smile, his winks, his eye gestures and his oft repeated phrase, “….manage kar lena” had a child-like appeal to it. The video was completely focused on him, and you could only see his face on the large screen. It was clear that he was the showman lead. The ambience and energy had to be experienced to be believed. It did not matter

what seats one had - ours were way up and we could barely see the artists on stage, so we followed the video on the large screen; all we saw was Rahat’s face all evening. Everybody was in a good mood, many knew each other and there was a lot of hugging and cheek kissing going on. Rehaan Siddiqui, the event manager had kept his promise of distributing roses. Many had a beautiful long stemmed rose in their hands which they were holding carefully and admiring. The women were all decked up in beautiful desi attire and many men were in the traditional kurta pyjama. The South Asian community of Houston was in strong attendance, and within, one could see the large diversity too. Raahat began with the qawali, ‘Allah Hu, Allah Hu…..’, an invocation to the almighty. Went on to his popular songs from the Bollywood films, a popular number by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and ended with the amazing rendition of “dum mast kalandar mast mast…”. There were moments when you hoped for the entire stadium to stay lighted up so that you could see the artists as well as the large crowd. The tradition of music unites the south Asian community. Their devotion to the modern classical fusion was so obvious. Raahat claimed that he loved the live programs in Houston as this city had the best audience one could wish for. Thanks to the many sponsors whose magnanimity helps keep our tradition alive. Kudos once again to Rehaan Siddiqui of Hum Tum Radio for the initiative to organize events on such a large scale.

Bibi Magazine celebrated its 20th Bridal Show Houston: To celebrate 20 of anything marks a big occasion but when it is the celebration of 20 bridal shows for the South Asian community, it is a testament to growing strength of the demographic. Bibi Magazine celebrated its 20th Bridal Show at the Hyatt Regency Downtown with a packed house of upscale vendors, newly engaged couples (many with parents in tow), a grand fashion show featuring the collection preview of Houston’s new Baraat Bridal Studio and of course, a cake commemorating the occasion and bubbly champagne served in colorful, LED-lit glasses. “When we held our first bridal show 10 years ago, we barely had about 30-40 brides and about 100 people in total. Today, we have close to 200 brides who have pre-registered and about 400 attendees. We’ve come along way!” says Ayesha Hakki, founder and publisher of Bibi Magazine, a national bridal publication established in 2000. The room was aglow with washes of blue light along the walls and two mandaps

(elaborate canopies under which Hindus get married) stood as anchors to the all white and gold stage. The stage, designed by The Perfect Touch Linens, looked like the entrance to a harem at an ancient Indian palace. The rest of the room was an assortment of cakes, chocolate fountains, photographers, clothing and jewelry stalls, DJs, dancers and henna artists. Brides walked among the 28 booths clutching Bibi gift bags stuffed with Incipio cell phone cases, makeup samples, the latest issue of Bibi Bridal while sampling food, sipping champagne and gathering information for their upcoming weddings. The highlight of the day was, however, the fashion show that presented the bridal collections of the soon-to-open Baraat Studio by the founders of Houston’s established South Asian boutique, Roop Sari Palace located on Harwin. Models walked out in glittering bridalwear for women featuring colorful saris, flowing anarkalis and rhinestone and zari-encrusted lehngas. For men, fitted sherwanis and suits were shown. Colors ranged from metallics to jewel-toned with hints of neon. The cuts were flowing and

layered. The founders of the Bibi Magazine, Ayesha Hakki and Zooni, presented their Bridal show director Zeb Mamsa and board advisor Munir Ibrahim, each an award for 10-years of service. A mehndi-inspired cake design by Cake Creations by Janeth, was cut to mark the occasion and the fashion show began. The opening was a musical piece played on the dulcimer by Joshua Messick, which culminated into a DJmixed soundtrack by DJ Ramping that accompanied the models. The show ended with the introduction of the lead designer behind Baraat Studio, Saniya Kaanji. “The Bibi Bridal Shows are a bi-annual event held at hotels and venues around Houston that can handle South Asian weddings,” adds Zeb Mamsa. “ South Asian weddings are large, multiday events that require a team of vendors. We hope that the Bibi Bridal Show makes it easier for couples to plan their special days.” Bibi Bridal Shows are held in April and October of each year and are geared towards the luxury market. Each show features about 25 vendors that range from decorators, planners, photographers, invitations, DJs, cake designers, caterers, clothing, jewelry and more. Bibi Magazine, a national bridal magazine that began in Houston in 2000 and is now headquarted in New York City, puts on the shows. More information can be found at Bibi Magazine.com.

Faridoun Hemani’s

efforts to expose human trafficking in Houston, Texas

Nargis Lakhani

Houston in Texas is the hub for human trafficking because of its strategic location’, say Faridoun, an international reporter addressing various organizations across Texas on global issues and human trafficking. Human Trafficking is believed to be one of the fastest growing forms of organized crime in the world, though most people ignore it or are simply unaware. It yields profits of USD 32 billion, with figures showing 27 million men, women and children in slavery. It depicts human trafficking worldwide, in all its forms, with the emphasis on what big business can do to help end this modern form of slavery. Issues that he highlights are: border trafficking at the Mexico-USA border, children sexually exploited in Kenya’s tourist resorts, the underpaid workers in the garment industry in India, child labor in tobacco farms in Malawi and India, child brides in Egypt. What is ‘Human Trafficking?’ ‘Human Trafficking’ denotes under-valuing human capital for use, abuse, misuse, overuse, etc. The genesis of all ‘use’ family of actions starts with the very human and basic characteristic of ‘TRUST”. A child trusts a parent, a cousin, an uncle, an aunt, a friendly neighbor, a teacher, a clergy or religious personnel. If any of those trusted ones has an evil intention, then breaking the covenant of ‘trust’ is no big deal for them. And, what was the other child/person hoping for? The hope of a relationship or a better life! Is that a sin? To trust somebody

who promises them a better life? When we, the public, see or have any suspicion of something shady happening, what do we do? What is it that we can do? Often it seems to be a hopeless situation and we often turn the other way. We, the South Asian community, find many

Fortunately, with the modern communication systems, the world is now flat and everything is under the scanner. The big corporate houses that often leverage their reach to find cheap labor will not take up leadership in eradicating human trafficking. Then, who is it

from our home country in dire plight. We recognize the issue because back home, these were all ‘in our face’. Most of the victims are frequently from the economically marginalized section of the society; in fact they are mostly from the ultra-poor segment. Now that we are in a country where we have made it good, we often feel disconnected with these issues. Cocooned in a different lifestyle we often even tend to forget about the existence of such issues.

that can work to alleviate the many problems of human trafficking? It will have to be the common public who through their awareness and participation can work collectively towards an equitable world. Let us join hands with organizations and people such as Faridoun heads to stop and eradicate human trafficking. All humans are bound to each other and what weallow as the destiny of one human touches the fate of all. Through his work with Linx Pro-

With a forte in covering conflict and post-conflict societies around the world, Faridoun has reported on a variety of stories such as the assassination of President Sadat of Egypt, the civil war in Lebanon, revolutions in Central Europe, the violent breakup of Yugoslavia, and the recent wars in Iraq and Somalia. Faridoun’s continuous global outreach, which spans over 76 countries, has led him towards a newfound desire to cover meaningful and influential stories in social development. In 2011 Faridoun travelled across Pakistan to report on the massive floods which took place in 2010 and put nearly one-fifth of Pakistan underwater, brought forth over $43 billion in damage, and led to over 1,780 fatalities. In his documentary entitled “Road to Recovery: The 2010 Pakistan Floods,” Faridoun not only recounts the effects of such a catastrophic disaster, but also shares the stories and experiences of the victims of one of the worst natural disasters in modern history. Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a celebration held on May 5. It is celebrated in the United States[1] and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla,[note 1][2][3][4] where the holiday is called El Día de la Batalla de Puebla (English: The Day of the Battle of Puebla).[5][6][7] It originated with Mexican-American communities in the American West as a way to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War,[8][9] and today the date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.[10] In the state of Puebla, the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. Collapsed building owner arrested on India border

Mohammed Sohel Rana, the fugitive owner of the illegally-constructed building that collapsed in Bangladesh last week, killing hundreds of people, was arrested yesterday while trying to flee to India, police said. Rana was arrested near the land border at Benapole in western Bangladesh, just as he was about to flee into neighbouring West Bengal, said Jahangir Kabir Nanak, junior minister for the local government. Mohammed Sohel Rana, who has been in hiding since the Rana Plaza collapsed on Wednesday, was arrested near a border crossing while trying to enter West Bengal. pic/AFP Rana was brought back by helicopter to the capital Dhaka where he faced charges of negligence. Rana’s capture by the Rapid Action Battalion brought cheers and applause when it was announced on a loudspeaker at the site of the collapsed building in the suburb of Savar. Reduced to rubble Rana was a local leader of ruling Awami League’s youth front and had been on the run since Wednesday. He last appeared in public in front of his Rana Plaza on Tuesday after

huge cracks appeared in the building. However, he assured tenants, including five garment factories, that the building was safe. Hours later, Rana Plaza was reduced to rubble, crushing most victims under massive blocks of concrete and mortar. A garment manufacturers’ group said the factories in the building employed 3,122 workers, but it was not clear how many were inside it when it collapsed. At least 377 people are confirmed to have died in the collapse of the 8-storey building. Rana had the approval to construct five floors but he added three more illegally. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also the Awami League leader, ordered his arrest. Rana was presented before the media briefly at the commando force’s headquarters in Dhaka. Wearing a printed shirt, an exhausted and dishevelled Rana was sweating as two security officers held him by his arms. A security official helped him to drink water after he gestured he was thirsty. He did not speak to the media during the 10-minute appearance after which he was taken away. He is likely to

be handed over to local police who will have to charge him and produce him in court within 24 hours. On Sunday, rescuers were supposed to start using heavy equipment to drill a central hole from the top to look for survivors and dead bodies. But the operation was delayed after rescuers located a woman inside the building, and were trying to pull her out. The woman was later pulled out alive from the rubble. Hasan Akbari, a rescuer, said, “When we tried to extricate a man next to the rescued woman, his body was being torn apart. So I had to let go. But God willing, we will be able to rescue him with more help very soon.” Fire breaks out at collapsed bldg site A fire broke out in the wreckage of the garment factory yesterday, injuring three rescue workers, officials said. Authorities said the fire broke out because of sparks generated, as rescuers tried to cut through a steel rod to reach a survivor. Officials said smoke pouring from the piles of shattered concrete halted rescue efforts.

I feel sorry for Mumbai: Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal feels sorry for millions of Mumbai residents who travel to work on local trains everyday, often making do with broken seats, missing fans or just enough space to stand. Yet, 10 days after he was shocked by the condition of the rakes that run on Central Railway’s Harbour line, CR officials have admitted that the minister may have been appalled and ordered an immediate improvement in the condition of the rakes, but no such improvement could be expected for at least 12 more months. In spite of Bansal’s reaction, Central Railway officials say it is impractical to expect

improvement in the rakes at least for a year. File photo Bansal who was in Mumbai on April 16 to inaugurate the Dahanu local, then went on an inauguration spree, also declaring open the posh new terminal building at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. After the inauguration, he decided to commute till CST by local train. “He took the local train from Tilak Nagar railway station and travelled till CST, a 16-km stretch. While on the local train, he was dismayed to see torn seat covers, broken fans, and filthy floors,” said a senior official from CR who was accompanying the minister. The shock and surprise of trav-

elling in overcrowded trains with broken fans and torn seat covers is not new for Mumbaikars What upset the minister most however, were the old and rickety rakes. When SUNDAY MiD DAY contacted Central Railway authorities, a senior official who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “Unfortunately the rake that arrived for the minister was an older one.” But why would it take a year to commission new rakes so that the minister can feel less sorry for Mumbaiites? There is no plausible answer. The Harbour Line runs on DC and Central Railway will first complete the conversion

from DC to AC in the mainline. “The conversion from DC to AC on the mainline will take more than a year and only after we have finished that will we be able to touch the harbour line,” VA Malegaonkar, Chief PRO, CR told SMD. The Harbour Line runs 528 services, all of which are old ninecar trains. Passengers not amused Passengers, who travel on this overcrowded line however, are far from amused by the minister’s statements and the railway authorities’ response to it. Nika Shah, who commutes between Kharghar and CST every day, said, “We have been complaining

for many years about the bad services we get on the Harbour Line. It’s not as if we pay less for our tickets and passes because we get terrible rakes with broken fans and torn seats.” Shah says on an average at least twice a week she finds the fan under which she is standing or sitting, is broken. “Luckily for us the minister himself suffered what we go through every day and asked the authorities to replace the rakes immediately. I hope the minister follows up with CR staff and makes sure we get trains that any civilised society deserves,” said Manoj Sanap from Panvel who travels to CST everyday on work.

Galaxy S4 Matches iPhone5 in Display Dazzle If Samsung wants to continue the iPhone bashing in its popular Galaxy smartphone commercials, it just got some valuable ammunition from DisplayMate, which rated the Galaxy S4 display equal to that of the Retina Display-sporting iPhone 5. This bodes well for consumer media consumption and text reading on the device, but also serves as a clarion call to developers who will want to write apps for all that pixel-perfect goodness. The Galaxy S4 offers a full high-definition (HD) display at 1920 x 1080 pixels, which is the same pixel resolution in a 5.5-inch or smaller screen as that of a 50-inch HDTV, DisplayMate said. Displaying HD content at its native resolution saves battery life because there's no need to rescale. However, that quality might just be overkill. The S4 offers 441 pixels per inch (PPI) resolution, but people with 20/20 vision can't resolve

Ranbir-Katrina's 'accidental' ride In his enthusiasm to show off his new car to Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor narrowly misses a collision

He’s a dashing star alright, but looks like Ranbir Kapoor is out to prove that in more ways than one. On Monday night, the Kapoor boy was obviously in a mood to show off his new baby -- a brand new white Mercedes Benz, G class SUV to his favourite girl Katrina Kaif. He offered to take her for a spin too, but what could have been a cosy little ride in a new car, ended up being a near disaster. Ranbir apparently took his new car off to Film City where he was shooting for a commercial. On his way back, he offered to drop Kat, who was also shooting in Film City. Once in Pali Hill, Bandra, the couple apparently were so caught up in conversation that they didn’t realise that in the vicinity, that very night, Imran Khan was hosting a party to celebrate his maamujaan Aamir Khan’s Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak completing 25 years. And there were hordes of cameramen stationed outside Imran’s house! Once Ranbir realised that they might be caught on camera, he apparently panicked and speeded up and almost ended up colliding with a car coming from the opposite direction. According to an eyewitness, thankfully the other car was not being driven fast. “Katrina was sitting in the passenger’s seat and when Ranbir spotted the media outside Imran’s house, he pushed the accelerator to avoid being photographed. He was driving on a steep slope and in panic he almost collided into a car towards his SUV. Ranbir was a bit shaken but he continued driving and then they went to his house.” Looks like Ranbir likes to spend most of his money on cars. A few months back he had taken Sanjay Leela Bhansali for a spin in another new car. And not so long ago, it was his mother Neetu Kapoor who was the lucky one to get driven by him in a new Audi. What is interesting is all of Ranbir’s cars come with number 8 and the new Mercedes SUV that he has bought costs a cool R 1 crore 40 lakh. Ranbir was not available for comment.

Malaika Arora Khan launches her own clothing line

Many celebrities from Bollywood recently, arrived at the launch of Malaika Arora Khan’s new fashion label in Mumbai. Karisma Kapoor, Amrita Arora took time out for the gorgeous Malaika and were present at the event. Malaika Arora Khan geared up to launch her own clothing line called the Closet Label, at Olive in Mumbai. She’s the creative director, stylist and curator of the collection.

Aashiqui 2 fails to recreate 'Aashiqui' magic Yes Ashiqui 2 very much reminds you of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 1973's classic Abhimaan starring Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri (Bachchan). The film also reminds you of Ananth Mahadevan directed long forgotten flick Dil Vil Pya Vyar's track which had R.Madhavan and Namrata Shirodkar (If anyone remembers the film). Rahul Jaykar (Amitabh Bachchan)! Ooops.. (Sorry, I got carried away). Rahul Jaykar (Aditya Roy Kapur) is a singing star. He falls in love with the voice of Aarohi Shirke (Jaya Bhaduri)! (Sorry again).. Aarohi Shirke (Shraddha Kapoor) who aspires to be a singer and sings at small joints. Aarohi sings one of Rahul's song in a different but a unique way (This was new in the script, Of course) and this is what hit's Rahul on his heart. Rahul takes it upon himself and decides to make Aarohi a singing star. He convinces her by building her confidence (Yes! You can do it Types) and even arranges for her audition with the music baron. Rahul proposes Aarohi and they both fall in love. Aarohi's career takes-off with flying colors. And Rahul's career starts dropping. There comes a point where Rahul starts hating his own identity and Aarohi makes a decision to save her Love-Life! Because that is what both the film's poster said.. Love Makes Life Live!!! As far as the performances are concerned, Aditya Roy Kapur has already proved that he is a Brilliant Actor and there are no second thoughts about it. Aashiqui 2 is only worth watching for some breath-taking performances by the leads. Shraddha Kapoor sounds very promising

Iron Man 3' slick and enjoyable

once again. She has done this challenging role at her ease. This actress will go a very long way provided given her good scripts and roles. Other supporting cast including Shaad Randhawa and Mahesh Thakur are good in their respective part. Director Mohit Suri who has directed Thrillers and Chillers earlier, Tries out a Romantic complex story. He is a good director (No doubts), But the poor writing by Shagufta Rafique ruins his entire hard work. There is seriously nothing new in Aashiqui 2 which you haven't witnessed earlier in other films, But still Mohit Suri tried real hard to save this show with his amazing Film- making skills. Music of the film is good. especially the songs 'Tum Hi Ho', 'Sun Raha Hai' and 'Piya Aaye Na'. But unfortunately they won't be remembered in a long listening. The camera work is good. To cut the entire explanation short, don't even think of comparing anything (Including the Music) of this film with 1990's classic Aashiqui. Those who are die-hard Bhatt-camp movie fans, Please don't care about my Review and proceed to the cinema halls.

With characters culled from Marvel Comics, we know for sure that "Iron Man 3" would be packed with spectacular action and nice razor sharp, witty lines. When, the film begins with a voice-over which states - "A famous man once said, we create our own demons. Never mind who the famous man is." - we are all the more confident about the same. The voice-over at the very onset sets the tenor of the film. The first scene ushers in a New Year's party in Bern, Switzerland, heralding the new millennium where a businessman-cum-genius inventor-cum mechanic Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is partying hard. The audience waits with baited breath to understand how he creates his own demons. "Iron Man 3" is the Superhero's journey of finding the demons he created and destroying them. Flash forward to the present day, following the attacks on New York where a new terrorist, Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), is threatening to bring down the US government. Tony is mentally fatigued. He is worn out with confidence and anxiety issues. This causes a strain on his relationship with Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). He is unable to sleep and so he spends all his time developing a super cloak - The metallic shield that can protect him. Created through advance mechanics, it assembles itself around him and works

on mental remote. Thus making him the formidable - Iron Man. Meanwhile, a good looking bio-tech researcher and geneticist Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce), who has a grouse against Tony, teams up with Mandarin. So it is super-villains versus Iron Man. With his back against the wall, Tony has to survive by his own devices, relying on his creativity and instincts to protect himself and those close to him. He has also to juggle a tense relationship with his old buddy James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) and beautiful ex-girlfriend Maya (Rebecca Hall). Along the way, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him - does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? The actions set along with the stunts are breathtakingly spectacular. The mid-air rescue operation as well as the Iron Man's suits either flying or fighting is a visual treat. The cinematography along with the computer generated images merge seamlessly into frames making the entire watching experience amazing. The costumes as well as the production designs are visually remarkable. Jam-packed with humour and gags, there is no emotional connect with the characters. During the course of the narration, director Shane Black and his co-writer Drew Pearce have meandered from

You Can't resist watching 'Lucky Di Unlucky Story' After pampering your funny bone with riotous laughter delights in the past, here comes another cine depiction of Punjwood's tryst with a somewhat an innovative cine idea that is of "joviality blended with suspense." It won't be wrong to say that after proving his mettle in singing arena, Gippy is heading towards new horizons of success in acting aisles too. With movies like "Carry On Jatta", "Singh Vs Kaur" in his bunch of successful movies, this time the budding superstar of Punjwood has come up with a comic thriller "Lucky Di Unlucky Story." Although in current scenario humor is considered as somewhat a mandatory condiment for any and every Punjabi cine delight, but this time director of "Lucky Di Unlucky Story", Smeep Kang (Carry On Jattaa fame) along with Naresh Kathuria have experimented with the prevailing notion and have tried to craft something different around the core of humor and suspense.

the graphic novel into subplots merging the sensibilities of the eighties and early nineties, thus making everything odd in the character's history. This is very evident in the scene where a de-motivated and lonely Tony traces The Mandarin to a small town. Here he is aided by a cute, cocky but troubled kid called Harley (Ty Simpkins), who misses his father. This relationship throws up a lot of witty one-liners, but the whole subplot seems incongruous. Another subplot is that of Tony and his colleague James, where both of them spend time buddy cop style! Every character in "Iron Man 3" is important and the actors deliver credible performances. Downey uses his offbeat persona to good effect, adding blunt honesty to Tony's character to help make the film more approachable. Ben adds a comic dimension to this Chinese looking Osama-bin-Laden-esque villain. While Gwyneth and Rebecca have nothing much to display, Guy nails his character to the T. But it is Ty Simpkins as Harley the smart kid who surpasses expectations with a mature performance as a friend and ally to Tony and lays the foundation for the next sequel. With a captivating finale, "Iron Man 3" is a slick, inspired fantasy-adventure film that almost anyone can enjoy. Let's pray for the next edition to come soon.

I can't shed the 'Harry Potter' tag:

Daniel Radcliffe Actor Daniel Radcliffe thinks he can never get rid of the "Harry Potter" label. The 23-year-old star, who played the character of the teenage wizard for eight movies, said he is hoping that people will eventually start recognising him as an actor in his own right, reported Contactmusic. "I do think it will be another few years before we see an article that won't mention Potter. I'm not sure that will happen. The goal isn't to stop Harry Potter being written about; that's unachievable. "The goal is to make myself an actor rather than just one character. I think that's starting to happen," he said. The actor said he is so self-critical that he can only bring himself to watch the fifth and eighth films in the magical franchise. "I think it's important to be your own toughest critic because that way you'll always be driven to get better. But it's important to temper that with being able to give yourself credit for something you're pleased with. I was very bad at that before. I was unable to see anything good, but now I'm starting to," he added.

Beyonce bans photographers

Beyonce has banned professional photographers from her current world tour, it has been revealed. According to the venue contract obtained by a music photographers' Facebook group, "no photo credentials" are to be granted for concerts on Beyonce's Mrs Carter tour, the Guardian reported. Instead, news outlets have been given a link to a website featuring shots from Amsterdam, Zagreb, Belgrade and Bratislava, all of which were taken by Frank Micelotta. The move to prohibit press photog-

raphers is seen by most observers as a reaction to this year's Super Bowl kerfuffle, when sites such as Gawker and Buzzfeed compiled "unflattering" images of Beyonce's jubilant exertions. After publishing these shots by Getty Images, Buzzfeed received an email from Beyonce's US publicist Yvette Noel-Schure, "respectfully asking" the site to "change" their article. As the blog Fstoppers points out, barring professionals means that newspapers and magazines will have to rely on amateurs.

Aamir Khan pumping iron for his for 'Dhoom 3' circus act

Aamir Khan, who essays a gymnast in Vijay Krishna Acharya's thriller, has been shooting in a circus tent Aamir Khan is reportedly shooting for his introduction song as well as several scenes for Dhoom 3 at Film City. Says a source, `He will be indulging in trapeze and mid-air acts for the shoot. The place has been booked for good long 40 days. European dancers and performers will be performing with him in the song.` The star has also become even more leaner as preparation for the shoot. Bollywood gets Virtual Power The huge hoardings in the city -despite the constant reminder from environmentalists that they come up at the cost of trees - aren't going anywhere. But they aren't the sole source of promotions now. More often than not, the first look of a Hindi film is nowadays seen on the Internet, even before it goes live on television. On April 5, the song Badtameez Dil from Ayan Mukerji's upcoming film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was released online. Within two days, the video garnered more than 1. 2 million hits on YouTube. Similarly, the Laila Teri Le Legi item song - featuring Sunny Leone - from Shootout At Wadala attracted about half a million viewers within a day. Speaking of which, every single day Indians watch about 125 million videos on the aforementioned video-sharing portal. But it's not the only available digital option. Back in 2009, Aamir Khan travelled across India during the launch of 3 Idiots for a campaign titled 'Catch me if you can' with regular updates on his blog. Over the years, this drive to connect and engage with the audiences has grown. Facebook (FB) pages dedicated to movies and their stars along with Twitter handles -even the fake ones - generate curiosity. The battle to grab eyeballs has gradually moved from the real to the virtual world. And nobody is complaining. Besides, the producers pay by the seconds on TV whereas online portals are a lot cheaper and a lot more accommodating. The rising number of web users is a testament to this rather pleasant change. Sanjay Dutt:

Ab bohot ho gaya!

With the rise of social media, online advertising and marketing have become an integral part of Bollywood theless, even the actors are more than willing to contribute time as well as effort to connect with their fans on the Internet. `Interaction with celebrities is something that excites millions of fans living in a world fascinated with stars. They can do so using Google Hangout and get the latest updates from the cast and the crew about the merchandise, ` notes Kesavan Kanchi Kandadai, CEO, Tangerine Digital. Understandably, Ranbir Kapoor had no qualms sharing frank moments-including videos where he's singing out of tune-from the sets of Barfi! Even Akshay Kumar shot an entire day for the digital promotion of his last feature Special 26. Alongside his efforts, the digital campaign for the heist movie was already in place and the trending hashtag results were showing up on timeline. there's so much to explore in terms of innovation and adaptability. We're talking about social networking sites, apps, interactive events, win-a-ticket contests and a lot more. The best part is there is no limitation on the space and time, ` adds Hegde. Even Viacom18 reiterates this particular view. `Social media is the strongest engagement tool that we can use to interact with the youth. We have proven efficiencies of our extensive campaigns, minimalistic posters, trailer mashups and many such innovative tools, ` points out the spokesperson. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, starring Farhan Akhtar, is all set to hit the marquee on July 12. However, the campaign for the biopic commenced way back in October last year. Hegde explains the mechanics behind this marketing strategy. `Today, Hindi movies are about the first three days: Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Nobody bothers what happens next. The FB page we set up for this film features just a teaser and some pictures. Yet fans continue to visit the page and discuss, ` he says. Turns out not only independent cinema but also big banners with small-budget films are making the most of these avenues. For what this trend is worth, content makes all the difference. Word of mouth can work against the films as well. `Content is the absolute king. If your product is good, nobody can stop you from positive publicity. But if it's a bad film, then no matter what you do, it will fail. ` sighs.

A record for the longest painting? Hyderabad based artist Dr Snehalatha Prasad, who created quite a buzz for creating a 64 feet acrylic painting on canvas, is now hoping to make it to the Limca Records. A PHD in professional arts, Dr Snehalatha Prasad's recent work is a 64-feet fusion painting of abstract and realism. The canvas boasts of nature in all its beauty and is touted to be the longest painting on canvas in Andhra Pradesh. "I completed the 64-feet long painting in three days. I slogged close to 19 hours a day and made this," says Dr Sneha, who is also the recipient of the highest award of Rajasthan in art from the prestigious Lalit Kala Academy. Although Hyderabad is home to the artist after she got married, she proudly calls herself the daughter of Rajasthan and her works vividly portray her roots — oasis in the middle of deserts and romance and nature in all compositions. "Through my art, I want to highlight the beauty of Mother Nature and talk about the harm we are doing to it. Global warming, rapid depletion of green cover in urban cities and pollution have all increased significantly. Hence I picked nature as my subject for most canvases," she says. Sneha also loves to explore romance in her works, Radha-Krishna being her favourite theme. The artist has entered her painting in the Limca Book of Records for being the longest painting in India, but informs that the final title will be given to her only after evaluation. "I hope I can create this record. I'm waiting with my fingers crossed," says Snehalatha.

TRAVEL The world’s best sunrises

Mount Fuji, Japan

Climbing Japan’s highest mountain is by no means easy. Unless you’re a hardened walker, you’ll need to do so in the official climbing season which runs from July-August, when Fuji is free of snow. Yes, it’s busy. But witness sunrise here and you’ll struggle to match the experience anywhere else on Earth. If you don’t hit the summit in time, never fear. The popular Yoshida trail has great views of the sun making its way into the sky.

Cancún (Spanish pronunciation: [kaŋ kun]) is a city in southeastern Mexico, located on the northeast coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It is a major world-renowned tourist destination,[2] as well as being the seat of the municipality of Benito Juárez. The city is located on the Caribbean Sea, and is one of the easternmost points in Mexico. Cancún is located just north of Mexico's Caribbean coast resort band known as the Riviera Maya.

Cancún (Mexico) Cancún is served by Cancún International Airport with an added main runway that commenced operation as of October 2010. It has many flights to North America, Central America, South America, Asia, and Europe. It is located on the northeast of the Yucatán Peninsula serving an average of more than ten million passengers per year. The airport is located around 20 km (12 mi) from the hotel zone, approximately 20 minutes trip by car.[12] There is also

a public transit bus system, servicing the hotel zone. The island of Isla Mujeres is located off the coast and is accessible by boat from Puerto Juárez. Cancún has a tropical climate, specifically a tropical wet and dry climate (Köppen Aw), with few temperature differences between seasons, but pronounced rainy seasons. The city is warm year-round, and moderated by onshore trade winds, with an annual mean temperature of 27.1 °C (80.8

°F). Unlike inland areas of the Yucatán Peninsula, sea breezes restrict high temperatures from reaching 35 °C (95 °F) on most afternoons. Annual rainfall is around 1,340 millimetres (52.8 in), falling on 115 days per year. More temperate conditions occur from November to February with occasional refreshing northerly breezes, it is drier and becomes hotter in March and April. It is hottest from May to September, due to proximity to the Caribbean and Gulf

humidity is high the year round, especially so during hurricane season (averages close to 70% on rainfree days). The hotel zone juts into the Caribbean Sea, it is surrounded by ocean therefore daytime temperatures are around 1-2C less and windspeeds are higher than at the airport located some distance inland, which is the official meteorological station for Cancún, averages as shown below.
